Since 1906 the company Kärntner Montanindustrie GmbH (KMI) is operating an underground mine for specular hematite in Waldenstein, Carinthia (Austria). The produced high quality ore is used for anticorrosion and in the ceramics and plastics industries. Because of the complex geological settings of the deposit Waldenstein, core drilling was already executed in the 1970s for exploration of new potential reserves. During prearrangements for the 2009 planned drilling program called "Waldenstein 2020" it became obvious that the existing records are not appropriate for a modern and cost-optimized planning of exploration and mining operations. A quick and easy access to specific geological information for further investigations and proper decision making was impossible. Within the framework of a master thesis at the University of Leoben (Austria) all available geological information (core and chip sampling data, structural data) was collected and moreover complemented by undertaking well-directed geological investigations. The results were stored in a new developed database application called GEOrganizer (based on Microsoft Access). Furthermore, all available geological maps were digitized, geo-referenced and visualized three dimensionally using the professional mine planning software Surpac Vision. Drilling and structural data can also be displayed three dimensionally by directly linking the GEOrganizer (database) to Surpac Vision. The total of all that digitally retrievable geological data provides a powerful tool for ongoing mining and exploration activities. It results in a dramatically improved and modern type of visualization compared to conventional mine maps of each level. 相似文献
