Introduction

Various research sites are pursuing 14 T MRI systems. However, both local SAR and RF transmit field inhomogeneity will increase. The aim of this simulation study is to investigate the trade-offs between peak local SAR and flip angle uniformity for five transmit coil array designs at 14 T in comparison to 7 T.

Methods

Investigated coil array designs are: 8 dipole antennas (8D), 16 dipole antennas (16D), 8 loop coils (8D), 16 loop coils (16L), 8 dipoles/8 loop coils (8D8L) and for reference 8 dipoles at 7 T. Both RF shimming and kT-points were investigated by plotting L-curves of peak SAR levels vs flip angle homogeneity.

Results

For RF shimming, the 16L array performs best. For kT-points, superior flip angle homogeneity is achieved at the expense of more power deposition, and the dipole arrays outperform the loop coil arrays.

Discussion and conclusion

For most arrays and regular imaging, the constraint on head SAR is reached before constraints on peak local SAR are violated. Furthermore, the different drive vectors in kT-points alleviate strong peaks in local SAR. Flip angle inhomogeneity can be alleviated by kT-points at the expense of larger power deposition. For kT-points, the dipole arrays seem to outperform loop coil arrays.

Objective

To determine whether a multi-feed, loop-dipole combined approach can be used to improve performance of rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) arrays human brain for MRI at 7 T.

Materials and methods

Electromagnetic field simulations in a spherical phantom and human voxel model “Duke” were conducted for different rectangular DRA geometries and dielectric constants εr. Three types of RF feed were investigated: loop-only, dipole-only and loop-dipole. Additionally, multi-channel array configurations up to 24-channels were simulated.

Results

The loop-only coupling scheme provided the highest B1+ and SAR efficiency, while the loop-dipole showed the highest SNR in the center of a spherical phantom for both single- and multi-channel configurations. For Duke, 16-channel arrays outperformed an 8-channel bow-tie array with greater B1+ efficiency (1.48- to 1.54-fold), SAR efficiency (1.03- to 1.23-fold) and SNR (1.63- to 1.78). The multi-feed, loop-dipole combined approach enabled the number of channels increase to 24 with 3 channels per block.

Discussion

This work provides novel insights into the rectangular DRA design for high field MRI and shows that the loop-only feed should be used instead of the dipole-only in transmit mode to achieve the highest B1+ and SAR efficiency, while the loop-dipole should be the best suited in receive mode to obtain the highest SNR in spherical samples of similar size and electrical properties as the human head.

Objective To evaluate a transverse electromagnetic (TEM), a circularly polarized (CP) (birdcage), and a 12-channel phased array head coil at the clinical field strength of B 0 = 3T in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), signal homogeneity, and maps of the effective flip angle α. Materials and methods SNR measurements were performed on low flip angle gradient echo images. In addition, flip angle maps were generated for αnominal = 30° using the double angle method. These evaluation steps were performed on phantom and human brain data acquired with each coil. Moreover, the signal intensity variation was computed for phantom data using five different regions of interest. Results In terms of SNR, the TEM coil performs slightly better than the CP coil, but is second to the smaller 12-channel coil for human data. As expected, both the TEM and the CP coils show superior image intensity homogeneity than the 12-channel coil, and achieve larger mean effective flip angles than the combination of body and 12-channel coil with reduced radio frequency power deposition. Conclusion At 3T the benefits of TEM coil design over conventional lumped element(s) coil design start to emerge, though the phased array coil retains an advantage with respect to SNR performance.  相似文献

Objective

To simulate the magnetic and electric fields produced by RF coil geometries commonly used at low field. Based on these simulations, the specific absorption rate (SAR) efficiency can be derived to ensure safe operation even when using short RF pulses and high duty cycles.

Methods

Electromagnetic simulations were performed at four different field strengths between 0.05 and 0.1 T, corresponding to the lower and upper limits of current point-of-care (POC) neuroimaging systems. Transmit magnetic and electric fields, as well as transmit efficiency and SAR efficiency were simulated. The effects of a close-fitting shield on the EM fields were also assessed. SAR calculations were performed as a function of RF pulse length in turbo-spin echo (TSE) sequences.

Results

Simulations of RF coil characteristics and B1+ transmit efficiencies agreed well with corresponding experimentally determined parameters. Overall, the SAR efficiency was, as expected, higher at the lower frequencies studied, and many orders of magnitude greater than at conventional clinical field strengths. The tight-fitting transmit coil results in the highest SAR in the nose and skull, which are not thermally sensitive tissues. The calculated SAR efficiencies showed that only when 180° refocusing pulses of duration ~ 10 ms are used for TSE sequences does SAR need to be carefully considered.

Conclusion

This work presents a comprehensive overview of the transmit and SAR efficiencies for RF coils used for POC MRI neuroimaging. While SAR is not a problem for conventional sequences, the values derived here should be useful for RF intensive sequences such as T, and also demonstrate that if very short RF pulses are required then SAR calculations should be performed.

Improve shimming capabilities of ultra-high field systems, with addition of an accessible low-complexity B0 shim array for head MRI at 7 T.

Materials and methods

An eight channel B0 shim coil array was designed as a tradeoff between shimming improvement and construction complexity, to provide an easy to use shim array that can be employed with the standard 7 T head coil. The array was interfaced using an open-source eight-channel shim amplifier rack. Improvements in field homogeneity for whole-brain and slice-based shimming were compared to standard second-order shimming, and to more complex higher order dynamic shimming and shim arrays with 32 and 48 channels.

Results

The eight-channel shim array provided 12% improvement in whole brain static shimming and provided 33% improvement when using slice-based shimming. With this, the eight-channel array performed similar to third-order dynamic shimming (without the need for higher order eddy current compensation). More complex shim arrays with 32 and 48 channels performed better, but require a dedicated RF coil.

Discussion

The designed eight-channel shim array provides a low-complexity and low-cost approach for improving B0 field shimming on an ultra-high field system. In both static and dynamic shimming, it provides improved B0 homogeneity over standard shimming.

Objective

To examine the feasibility of human cardiac MR (CMR) at 14.0 T using high-density radiofrequency (RF) dipole transceiver arrays in conjunction with static and dynamic parallel transmission (pTx).

Materials and methods

RF arrays comprised of self-grounded bow-tie (SGBT) antennas, bow-tie (BT) antennas, or fractionated dipole (FD) antennas were used in this simulation study. Static and dynamic pTx were applied to enhance transmission field (B1+) uniformity and efficiency in the heart of the human voxel model. B1+ distribution and maximum specific absorption rate averaged over 10 g tissue (SAR10g) were examined at 7.0 T and 14.0 T.

Results

At 14.0 T static pTx revealed a minimum B1+ROI efficiency of 0.91 μT/√kW (SGBT), 0.73 μT/√kW (BT), and 0.56 μT/√kW (FD) and maximum SAR10g of 4.24 W/kg, 1.45 W/kg, and 2.04 W/kg. Dynamic pTx with 8 kT points indicate a balance between B1+ROI homogeneity (coefficient of variation < 14%) and efficiency (minimum B1+ROI > 1.11 µT/√kW) at 14.0 T with a maximum SAR10g < 5.25 W/kg.

Discussion

MRI of the human heart at 14.0 T is feasible from an electrodynamic and theoretical standpoint, provided that multi-channel high-density antennas are arranged accordingly. These findings provide a technical foundation for further explorations into CMR at 14.0 T.

Introduction

MRI of excised hearts at ultra-high field strengths (\({\mathrm{B}}_{0}\)≥7 T) can provide high-resolution, high-fidelity ground truth data for biomedical studies, imaging science, and artificial intelligence. In this study, we demonstrate the capabilities of a custom-built, multiple-element transceiver array customized for high-resolution imaging of excised hearts.

Method

A dedicated 16-element transceiver loop array was implemented for operation in parallel transmit (pTx) mode (8Tx/16Rx) of a clinical whole-body 7 T MRI system. The initial adjustment of the array was performed using full-wave 3D-electromagnetic simulation with subsequent final fine-tuning on the bench.

Results

We report the results of testing the implemented array in tissue-mimicking liquid phantoms and excised porcine hearts. The array demonstrated high efficiency of parallel transmits characteristics enabling efficient pTX-based B1+-shimming.

Conclusion

The receive sensitivity and parallel imaging capability of the dedicated coil were superior to that of a commercial 1Tx/32Rx head coil in both SNR and T2*-mapping. The array was successfully tested to acquire ultra-high-resolution (0.1 × 0.1 × 0.8 mm voxel) images of post-infarction scar tissue. High-resolution (isotropic 1.6 mm3 voxel) diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography provided high-resolution information about normal myocardial fiber orientation.

Objective

To provide a numerical and experimental investigation of the static RF shimming capabilities in the human brain at 9.4 T using a dual-row transmit array.

Materials and methods

A detailed numerical model of an existing 16-channel, inductively decoupled dual-row array was constructed using time-domain software together with circuit co-simulation. Experiments were conducted on a 9.4 T scanner. Investigation of RF shimming focused on B1 + homogeneity, efficiency and local specific absorption rate (SAR) when applied to large brain volumes and on a slice-by-slice basis.

Results

Numerical results were consistent with experiments regarding component values, S-parameters and B1 + pattern, though the B1 + field was about 25 % weaker in measurements than simulations. Global shim settings were able to prevent B1 + field voids across the entire brain but the capability to simultaneously reduce inhomogeneities was limited. On a slice-by-slice basis, B1 + standard deviations of below 10 % without field dropouts could be achieved in axial, sagittal and coronal orientations across the brain, even with phase-only shimming, but decreased B1 + efficiency and SAR limitations must be considered.

Conclusion

Dual-row transmit arrays facilitate flexible 3D RF management across the entire brain at 9.4 T in order to trade off B1 + homogeneity against power-efficiency and local SAR.  相似文献

Object

The specific absorption rate (SAR) can be determined from radiofrequency transmit fields measured via magnetic resonance imaging.

Materials and methods

The proposed method estimates the SAR solely from the complex transmit field (B 1 + ) by taking into account the particular properties of the electromagnetic field generated by an 8-channel transmit array. It is further based on an iterative consistency check between the measured B 1 + magnitude and an appropriate field estimate fulfilling Maxwell’s equations. For testing the method, simulations and phantom experiments were performed for a multi-transmit array at 3T using a cylindrical phantom.

Results

The method’s robustness with respect to the assumptions made about electric tissue properties as well as its stability under different initial conditions regarding the signal phase was shown. A high sensitivity to signal noise was found. Robust reconstruction results were achieved including information from more than two transmit elements. The validity of the experimental results was confirmed by a qualitative comparison to simulated electromagnetic fields.

Conclusions

The method allows the determination of the SAR as well as the transmit phase of the individual channels of a multi-transmit array. With additional B0 inhomogeneity measurements, a reconstruction of the receive phase is feasible independent of the receive coil type in use.  相似文献

Objective

Low-field MRI systems are expected to cause less RF heating in conventional interventional devices due to lower Larmor frequency. We systematically evaluate RF-induced heating of commonly used intravascular devices at the Larmor frequency of a 0.55 T system (23.66 MHz) with a focus on the effect of patient size, target organ, and device position on maximum temperature rise.

Materials and methods

To assess RF-induced heating, high-resolution measurements of the electric field, temperature, and transfer function were combined. Realistic device trajectories were derived from vascular models to evaluate the variation of the temperature increase as a function of the device trajectory. At a low-field RF test bench, the effects of patient size and positioning, target organ (liver and heart) and body coil type were measured for six commonly used interventional devices (two guidewires, two catheters, an applicator and a biopsy needle).

Results

Electric field mapping shows that the hotspots are not necessarily localized at the device tip. Of all procedures, the liver catheterizations showed the lowest heating, and a modification of the transmit body coil could further reduce the temperature increase. For common commercial needles no significant heating was measured at the needle tip. Comparable local SAR values were found in the temperature measurements and the TF-based calculations.

Conclusion

At low fields, interventions with shorter insertion lengths such as hepatic catheterizations result in less RF-induced heating than coronary interventions. The maximum temperature increase depends on body coil design.

Objective

To demonstrate imaging performance for cardiac MR imaging at 7 T using a coil array of 8 transmit/receive dipole antennas and 16 receive loops.

Materials and methods

An 8-channel dipole array was extended by adding 16 receive-only loops. Average power constraints were determined by electromagnetic simulations. Cine imaging was performed on eight healthy subjects. Geometrical factor (g-factor) maps were calculated to assess acceleration performance. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-scaled images were reconstructed for different combinations of receive channels, to demonstrate the SNR benefits of combining loops and dipoles.

Results

The overall image quality of the cardiac functional images was rated a 2.6 on a 4-point scale by two experienced radiologists. Imaging results at different acceleration factors demonstrate that acceleration factors up to 6 could be obtained while keeping the average g-factor below 1.27. SNR maps demonstrate that combining loops and dipoles provides a more than 50% enhancement of the SNR in the heart, compared to a situation where only loops or dipoles are used.

Conclusion

This work demonstrates the performance of a combined loop/dipole array for cardiac imaging at 7 T. With this array, acceleration factors of 6 are possible without increasing the average g-factor in the heart beyond 1.27. Combining loops and dipoles in receive mode enhances the SNR compared to receiving with loops or dipoles only.

Object

Ultra-high field (UHF) neuroimaging is usually conducted with volume transmit (Tx) and phased array receive (Rx) coils, both tightly enclosing the object. The travelling-wave (TW) concept allows a remote excitation offering more flexible experimental setups. To investigate the feasibility of primate MRI in horizontal UHF MRI, we first compared the distribution of the electromagnetic fields in an oil phantom and then verified the concept with an in vivo experiment.

Materials and methods

In the phantom experiments an in-house circularly polarized hybrid birdcage coil and a self-developed patch antenna were used for Tx and an eight-element phased array antenna for Rx. B 1 + fields were calculated and measured for both approaches. For in vivo experiments the Rx part was replaced with an optimized three-element phased array head coil. The SAR was calculated using field simulation.

Results

In the phantom the field distribution was homogenous in a central volume of interest of about 10 cm diameter. The TW concept showed a slightly better homogeneity. Examination of a female crab-eating macaque led to homogeneous high-contrast images with a good delineation of anatomical details.

Conclusion

The TW concept opens up a new approach for MRI of medium-sized animals in horizontal UHF scanners.  相似文献

Objectives

The Iseult MRI is an actively shielded whole-body magnet providing a homogeneous and stable magnetic field of 11.7 T. After nearly 20 years of research and development, the magnet successfully reached its target field strength for the first time in 2019. This article reviews its commissioning status, the gradient–magnet interaction test results and first imaging experience.

Materials and methods

Vibration, acoustics, power deposition in the He bath, and field monitoring measurements were carried out. Magnet safety system was tested against outer magnetic perturbations, and calibrated to define a safe operation of the gradient coil. First measurements using parallel transmission were also performed on an ex-vivo brain to mitigate the RF field inhomogeneity effect.

Results

Acoustics measurements show promising results with sound pressure levels slightly above the enforced limits only at certain frequency intervals. Vibrations of the gradient coil revealed a linear trend with the B0 field only in the worst case. Field monitoring revealed some resonances at some frequencies that are still under investigation.

Discussion

Gradient-magnet interaction tests at up to 11.7 T are concluded. The scanner is now kept permanently at field and the final calibrations are on-going to pave the road towards the first acquisitions on volunteers.

The Transmission-Line Modelling (TLM) method is applied to the electromagnetic characterisation of RF coils and samples for magnetic resonance imaging ()MRI. Theoretical verification was performed using a simple surface coil. Experimental verification was performed using Alderman-Grant and birdcage coils constructed for use on a 7 T micro-imaging system. The modelling method enabled electromagnetic characteristics of frequency response, electromagnetic field generation, energy stored and power loss to be determined. From these parameters, coil resonant modes.B 1 field profiles, voltages, currents, quality factor (Q),π/2 pulse length, and the equivalent lumped-element circuit components of resistance, inductance and capacitance were calculated. Equations are presented that enable a comprehensive electromagnetic characterisation of the RF coil and sample to be achieved based on the results of the TLM simulations. The use of the TLM method is extended to include the design of safe arbitrary multi-nuclear pulse sequences such that the specific absorption rate (SAR) of tissue, and RF coil component safety limits are not exceeded.  相似文献

At high-field strengths (≥3T) inhomogeneity of the radio frequency (RF) field and RF power deposition become increasingly problematic. Parallel Transmission (PTx)—the use of segmented transmission arrays with independently driven elements—affords the ability to combat both of these issues. There are a variety of existing designs for PTx coils, ranging from systems with two channels to systems with eight or more. In this work, we have investigated the impact of the number of independent channels on the achievable results for both homogeneity improvement and power reduction in vivo.

Materials and methods

A 3T Philips Achieva MRI system fitted with an 8-channel PTx body coil was driven so as to emulate configurations with 1, 2 4 and 8 independent channels. RF shimming was used in two different anatomies in order to assess improvements in RF homogeneity.

Results

Significant homogeneity improvements were observed when increasing from 1 to 2, 2 to 4, and 4 to 8 channel configurations. Reductions in RF power requirements and local SAR were predicted for increasing numbers of channels.

Conclusion

Increasing the number of RF transmit channels adds extra degrees of freedom which can be used to benefit homogeneity improvement or power reduction for body imaging at 3T.  相似文献

Objective

To develop and assess a short-duration JPRESS protocol for detection of overlapping metabolite biomarkers and its application to paediatric brain tumours at 3 Tesla.

Materials and methods

The short-duration protocol (6 min) was optimised and compared for spectral quality to a high-resolution (38 min) JPRESS protocol in a phantom and five healthy volunteers. The 6-min JPRESS was acquired from four paediatric brain tumours and compared with short-TE PRESS.

Results

Metabolite identification between the 6- and 38-min protocols was comparable in phantom and volunteer data. For metabolites with Cramer–Rao lower bounds > 50%, interpretation of JPRESS increased confidence in assignment of lactate, myo-Inositol and scyllo-Inositol. JPRESS also showed promise for the detection of glycine and taurine in paediatric brain tumours when compared to short-TE MRS.

Conclusion

A 6-min JPRESS protocol is well tolerated in paediatric brain tumour patients. Visual inspection of a 6-min JPRESS spectrum enables identification of a range of metabolite biomarkers of clinical interest.

Purpose

To improve the precision of a free-breathing 3D saturation-recovery-based myocardial T1 mapping sequence using a post-processing 3D denoising technique.

Methods

A T1 phantom and 15 healthy subjects were scanned on a 1.5 T MRI scanner using 3D saturation-recovery single-shot acquisition (SASHA) for myocardial T1 mapping. A 3D denoising technique was applied to the native T1-weighted images before pixel-wise T1 fitting. The denoising technique imposes edge-preserving regularity and exploits the co-occurrence of 3D spatial gradients in the native T1-weighted images by incorporating a multi-contrast Beltrami regularization. Additionally, 2D modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI) acquisitions were performed for comparison purposes. Accuracy and precision were measured in the myocardial septum of 2D MOLLI and 3D SASHA T1 maps and then compared. Furthermore, the accuracy and precision of the proposed approach were evaluated in a standardized phantom in comparison to an inversion-recovery spin-echo sequence (IRSE).

Results

For the phantom study, Bland–Altman plots showed good agreement in terms of accuracy between IRSE and 3D SASHA, both on non-denoised and denoised T1 maps (mean difference −1.4 ± 18.9 ms and −4.4 ± 21.2 ms, respectively), while 2D MOLLI generally underestimated the T1 values (69.4 ± 48.4 ms). For the in vivo study, there was a statistical difference between the precision measured on 2D MOLLI and on non-denoised 3D SASHA T1 maps (P = 0.005), while there was no statistical difference after denoising (P = 0.95).

Conclusion

The precision of 3D SASHA myocardial T1 mapping was substantially improved using a 3D Beltrami regularization based denoising technique and was similar to that of 2D MOLLI T1 mapping, while preserving the higher accuracy and whole-heart coverage of 3D SASHA.

Objective

To review the major hardware components of low-field point-of-care MRI systems which affect the overall sensitivity.

Methods

Designs for the following components are reviewed and analyzed: magnet, RF coils, transmit/receive switches, preamplifiers, data acquisition system, and methods for grounding and mitigating electromagnetic interference.

Results

High homogeneity magnets can be produced in a variety of different designs including C- and H-shaped as well as Halbach arrays. Using Litz wire for RF coil designs enables unloaded Q values of ~ 400 to be reached, with body loss representing about 35% of the total system resistance. There are a number of different schemes to tackle issues arising from the low coil bandwidth with respect to the imaging bandwidth. Finally, the effects of good RF shielding, proper electrical grounding, and effective electromagnetic interference reduction can lead to substantial increases in image signal-to-noise ratio.

Discussion

There are many different magnet and RF coil designs in the literature, and to enable meaningful comparisons and optimizations to be performed it would be very helpful to determine a standardized set of sensitivity measures, irrespective of design.

Objective

To use high-permittivity materials (HPM) positioned near radiofrequency (RF) surface coils to manipulate transmit/receive field patterns.

Materials and methods

A large HPM pad was placed below the RF coil to extend the field of view (FOV). The resulting signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was compared with that of other coil configurations covering the same FOV in simulations and experiments at 7 T. Transmit/receive efficiency was evaluated when HPM discs with or without a partial shield were positioned at a distance from the coil. Finally, we evaluated the increase in transmit homogeneity for a four-channel array with HPM discs interposed between adjacent coil elements.

Results

Various configurations of HPM increased SNR, transmit/receive efficiency, excitation/reception sensitivity overlap, and FOV when positioned near a surface coil. For a four-channel array driven in quadrature, shielded HPM discs enhanced the field below the discs as well as at the center of the sample as compared with other configurations with or without unshielded HPM discs.

Conclusion

Strategically positioning HPM at a distance from a surface coil or array can increase the overlap between excitation/reception sensitivities, and extend the FOV of a single coil for reduction of the number of channels in an array while minimally affecting the SNR.

Objective

Temperature controlled T1 and T2 relaxation times are measured on NiCl2 and MnCl2 solutions from the ISMRM/NIST system phantom at low magnetic field strengths of 6.5 mT, 64 mT and 550 mT.

Materials and methods

The T1 and T2 were measured of five samples with increasing concentrations of NiCl2 and five samples with increasing concentrations of MnCl2. All samples were scanned at 6.5 mT, 64 mT and 550 mT, at sample temperatures ranging from 10 °C to 37 °C.

Results

The NiCl2 solutions showed little change in T1 and T2 with magnetic field strength, and both relaxation times decreased with increasing temperature. The MnCl2 solutions showed an increase in T1 and a decrease in T2 with increasing magnetic field strength, and both T1 and T2 increased with increasing temperature.

Discussion

The low field relaxation rates of the NiCl2 and MnCl2 arrays in the ISMRM/NIST system phantom are investigated and compared to results from clinical field strengths of 1.5 T and 3.0 T. The measurements can be used as a benchmark for MRI system functionality and stability, especially when MRI systems are taken out of the radiology suite or laboratory and into less traditional environments.
