A medical cast CoCrMo alloy was coated by plasma nitriding process to enhance the wear resistance. The microstructures, phases and micro-hardness of nitrided layers were investigated by atomic force microscopy(AFM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and micro-hardness.Tribological properties were investigated on a pin-on-disc wear tester under 25% bovine serum solutions. The experimental results showed that plasma nitriding was a promising process to produce thick, hard and wear resistant layers on the surface of CoCrMo alloy. The harder CrN and Cr2N phases formed on the plasma nitrided layer with the compact nano-crystalline structure.Compared with the untreated sample, all nitrided samples showed the lower wear rates and higher wear resistance at different applied loads and nitriding temperatures. It was concluded that the improvement of wear resistance could be ascribed to the formation of thicker and harder nitrided layers with the specific microstructures on nitrided surfaces.

The quenched M50NiL steel was plasma nitrided at 460°C for different time to investigate the effects of the duration time on the microstructure, microhardness and wear resistance of the nitrided layers. The results show that the plasma nitrided layer depth increases with increasing nitriding time. The plasma nitrided layer includes only the diffusion layer without compound layer. The main phases in the nitrided surface layer are nitrogen expended α′-Fe and γ′-Fe4N. The microstructure of the nitrided layer is refined. The wear resistance of the nitrided samples can be improved significantly by plasma nitriding. The sample nitrided for 4?h possesses the highest wear resistance, due to its relatively smooth surface and ultra-fine grains in the nitrided layer.

A series of experiments have been conducted on AISI 304 stainless steel using a hollow cathode discharge assisted plasma nitriding apparatus. Specimens were nitrided at high temperatures (520–560 °C) in order to produce nitrogen expanded austenite phase within a short time. The nitrided specimen was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and microhardness tester. The corrosion properties of nitrided samples were evaluated using anodic polarization tests in 3.5% NaCl solution. The nitrided layer was shown to consist of nitrogen expanded austenite and possibly a small amount of CrN precipitates and iron nitrides. The results indicated that rapid nitriding assisted hollow cathode discharge not only increased the surface hardness but also improved the corrosion resistance of the untreated substrate.

Plasma nitriding behavior of Fe-Cr alloys has been studied at temperatures in the range of 773–873 K in order to provide basic knowledge for microstructure design of nitrided layers and to improve the wear resistance. In the nitriding temperature of 773 K, typical microstructure of nitrided layers was observed as reported elsewhere. However, anormal microstructure of nitrided layers was observed under a nitriding condition, at 873 K for 176.4 ks (49 h). In Fe-13Cr alloy, nitrided layer showed stripe-pattern, each sub-layer of which has different chromium content. Nitrided layer hardness increased gradually from the specimen surface to the nitriding front before dropping drastically to the same level as matrix hardness. The stripe-pattern was also observed for Fe-3Cr alloy at the vicinity of nitriding front for the same nitriding conditions. On the other hand, nitrided layers in Fe-8Cr and Fe-19Cr alloys are composed from different sub-layers, containing different concentration of chromium. These phenomena cannot be explained only by nitrogen diffusion process during the nitriding.

Ti and its alloys (Ti-6Al-4V) have been used in different engineering applications due to their several outstanding properties. Nevertheless, their use in practical applications is limited in many cases due to their poor tribological property. Researches are ongoing on surface modification of Ti based materials by different plasma and ion based techniques to overcome this problem. However, the conventional plasma nitriding techniques have several problems such as formation of an arc, increased possibility of surface contamination due to a comparatively higher operating pressure, production of a very thin nitrided layer after a long processing time, etc. In this present work, the possibility of a new low-pressure plasma nitriding process using a Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) based saddle field fast atom beam source on a Ti-6Al-4V alloy sample is investigated. Plasma nitriding was carried out at 900 °C and at a pressure 0.1 Pa for 8 h by using a beam current 0.5 A. Optical Microscopy investigation of the cross-section of the nitrided sample revealed a compound nitrided layer (thickness approximately 16 μm) followed by a diffusion layer. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of a TiN phase in the nitrided layers. A roughly three fold higher hardness value (1578 HV0.015) in the top nitriding layer was observed by Vickers microhardness testing compared to hardness value of untreated sample (568 HV0.015),with a gradually decreasing hardness in the core material. The results show that this is a promising method for low pressure plasma nitriding of Ti alloy within a short processing time compared to the conventional nitriding process.

Active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN) is a novel surface modification technique that has many capabilities over the conventional DC plasma nitriding (CPN). In this study, 30CrNiMo8 low-alloy steel was active screen plasma-nitrided under various nitriding parameters such as active screen set-up parameters (different screen hole sizes, mesh sheet and plate top lids) and treatment temperature (520, 550 and 580 °C), in the gas mixture of 75% N2+25% H2 and chamber pressure of 500 Pa for 5 h. The properties of the nitrided specimens have been assessed by evaluating composition of phases, surface hardness, compound layer thickness and case depth using X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the screen hole size and top lid type (mesh or plate) play an important role in transition of active species (nitrogen ions and neutrals) toward the sample surface, which in turn can affect the nitrided layer hardness and thickness. Treatment at higher temperature with bigger screen hole size resulted in a thicker compound layer and higher layer hardness. The compound layers developed on the samples treated under different conditions were dual phase consisting of γ′-Fe4N and ε-Fe2-3N phases.

Cyclic plasma oxynitriding and cyclic plasma nitriding catalyzed by rare earth La of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel were performed and compared with conventional plasma nitriding. The nitrided layers were investigated by means of an optical microscope, microhardness tester, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), wear machine, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the wear resistance of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel is improved significantly by the two new rapid and deep plasma nitriding techniques. The new techniques increase the surface hardness of the nitrided layers and make the microhardness profiles gentler, which are consistent with the nitrogen concentration depth profiles. Meanwhile, the nitrided effect improves with increasing cycles. It was also found that the optimum phase compositions of nitrided layers with more γ′ phases and less ? phases for long-term service conditions can be obtained by the two new techniques, which is in agreement with the microstructure. In addition, traces of Fe3O4 were found in the cyclic plasma oxynitrided sample. Combining the SEM and EDS analysis indicated the existence of La in the nitrided layer of the sample under cyclic plasma nitriding catalyzed by rare earth La.

Surface states and wear behavior of drills of ground, sandblasted and plasmanitrided samples and drills made of AISI M2 high speed steel In the present work the effect of different surface conditions on plasma nitriding response of AISI M2 high speed steel was investigated. The plasma nitriding of ground and sandblasted samples and drills was performed at temperatures of 400°C and 500°C for two gas mixtures: 5 vol.% N2 and 76 vol.% N2 in hydrogen. Surface layers were characterized before and after plasma nitriding concerning the microstructure, roughness, microhardness, chemical composition, phase composition and residual stress states. Machining tests were carried out with drills during which drilling forces and flank wear have been measured. A significant effect of the surface state prior to nitriding on residual stress states and the properties of the nitrided layer and untreated core has been observed. Thinner nitrided layers on ground and sandblasted samples were attributed to high compressive residual stress states and a stress affected diffusion of nitrogen and carbon. In the machining tests, sandblasted drills exhibited the best performance. Lower nitrogen concentrations in the gas atmosphere without the formation of a compound layer gave the lowest drill flank wear for sandblasted surfaces while higher nitrogen concentrations led to a reduction of drilling forces and torque.

This article presents a new study of the mechanisms of plasma nitriding and nitrocarburizing processes, with particular emphasis on plasma diagnostics and light element detection at the treated sample surface. The results indicate that in the nitriding process neutrals, such as Fe, N and ions (such as N+), are abundantly present near the cathode region, suggesting that the formation of iron nitrides occurs through the combination of these species. Light element detection by elastic recoil analysis (ERA) shows that hydrogen is not present on the nitrided surface, but it is abundant on the nitrocarburized surface. The latter result is discussed in view of existing nitriding models. The role of CHn radicals in plasma nitrocarburizing is also discussed.

Plasma- and gas-nitrided 2Cr13 samples were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microhardness testing techniques. Nitrogen concentration profiles in the cross-sections of the nitrided samples were obtained by glow discharge optical spectroscopy (GDOS). Residual stress profiles along depth of the nitrided samples were measured using an X-ray stress tester. The tribological behaviour of the plasma- and the gas-nitrided samples in vacuum was investigated in order to analyse the effect of nitriding on wear resistance of the 2Cr13 steel. The results show the tribological properties of the 2Cr13 steel in vacuum are improved considerably by plasma nitriding and gas nitriding resulted from microstructure modification and surface hardening during nitriding. The plasma-nitrided samples have better wear resistance than the gas-nitrided samples under 30 N, while the gas-nitrided samples have higher wear resistance under 90 N. With increasing normal load from 30 N to 90 N, the wear mechanism shows a transition from mild adhesive and abrasive wear to severe adhesive or even delamination wear. The plasma-nitrided sample has thicker compound layer than the gas-nitrided sample, resulting that it exhibits more intensive delamination under high load of 90 N.

In this paper an effort has been made to plasma nitride the ball bearing steel AISI 52100. The difficulty with this specific steel is that its tempering temperature (~170–200°C) is much lower than the standard processing temperature (~460–580°C) needed for the plasma nitriding treatment. To understand the mechanism, effect of heat treatment on the nitrided layer steel is investigated. Experiments are performed on three different types of ball bearing races i.e. annealed, quenched and quench-tempered samples. Different gas compositions and process temperatures are maintained while nitriding these samples. In the quenched and quench-tempered samples, the surface hardness has decreased after plasma nitriding process. Plasma nitriding of annealed sample with argon and nitrogen gas mixture gives higher hardness in comparison to the hydrogen–nitrogen gas mixture. It is reported that the later heat treatment of the plasma nitrided annealed sample has shown improvement in the hardness of this steel. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the dominant phases in the plasma nitrided annealed sample are ε (Fe2 − 3N) and γ (Fe4N), whereas in the plasma nitrided annealed sample with later heat treatment only α-Fe peak occurs.

Surface engineering approach to increase surface properties such as wear resistance performed by pulsed magnetic treatment of nitrided steels was studied. Selected steel surfaces were treated by pulsed magnetic treatment and plasma ion nitriding with different optimized process parameters. The obtained microstructures were examined to study the influence of magnetic treatment on ion nitriding. SEM, AES, microhardness measurements, and image analyser were used to characterize the surface and interface. The results of this study show that pulsed magnetic treatment reduces residual stresses on the surface, improves the bonding of deposited nitride layers to substrate, influences the nitride layers, case depth, and surface hardness formation and increases the wear resistance.

Surface of 304 AISI austenitic stainless steel has been modified using duplex treatment technique of nitriding and carbonitriding. A thick modified nitrided layer, of approximately 20 µm, has been achieved when rf inductively coupled plasma was adjusted at 450 W for processing time of only 10 min. After performing the nitrided layer, the nitrided samples were carbonitrided using the same technique at different acetylene partial pressure ratios ranges from 10% to 70%, the balance was pure nitrogen. Different amount of nitrogen and carbon species are diffused underneath the surface through the nitrided layer during carbonitriding process and are found to be gas composition dependent. The treated samples were characterized by glow discharge optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy and Vickers microhardness tester. The microstructure of the duplex treated layer indicates the formation of γ?-Fe4N, Fe3C, CrN and nitrogen-expanded austenite (γN). The thickness of the duplex treated layer increases with increasing the acetylene partial pressure ratio. The surface microhardness of duplex treated samples has been found to be gas composition dependent and increased by 1.29 fold in comparison to the nitrided sample.

Recent research carried out in laboratories showed that Saddle field neutral fast atom beam source is a promising method for nitriding of stainless steel. In the present work, the effect of treatment time on the microstructural and mechanical properties of plasma-nitrided stainless steel sample was investigated by this new method. Plasma nitriding was carried out at 420 °C and at a pressure of 0.1 Pa for a time range of 1 to 12 h. SEM-EDX, microhardness tests, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to evaluate the mechanical and structural properties of the nitrided layer. It was found that nitriding time has a pronounced effect on the structural and mechanical properties of low-temperature plasma-nitrided samples and produced a precipitation-free thin hard nitrided layer within a short processing time.

Structure and properties of stainless steels after plasma immersion ion implantation and plasma nitriding Stainless steels can be nitrided at temperatures ≤ 400 °C to increase their hardness and wear resistance without a decreasing of their excellent corrosion resistance. Structure and properties of the surface layers produced by plasma nitriding and plasma immersion ion implantation in this temperature range were tested. There are negligible differences in the structure of the produced surface layers in spite of different interaction principles of the used technologies. However there are clear differences between the case of different steels. The case of ferritic chromium steels mainly consists of ε-nitride. Whereas the cases of austenitic and ferritic austenitic steels are characterized by expanded austenite. The corrosion resistance of the steels is reduced by nitriding only, if evident CrN-formation occurs.

In this study, plasma nitriding was carried out on pure titanium film coated 2024 Al alloy to improve its surface mechanical property. Ti film with the thickness of 3.0 mm was firstly fabricated by means of magnetron sputtering method. Then, the Ti coated specimen was subjected to plasma atmosphere comprising 40% N2e60% H2 at 430 C for 8 h. The microstructures of the nitrided specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Microhardness tester and pin-on-disc tribometer were used to test the mechanical properties of the untreated and nitrided specimen. The results showed that the surface of the nitrided specimen was composed of three layers(i.e. the outside nitride Ti N0.3layer, the middle Al3 Ti layer and the inside Al18Ti2Mg3 layer). The surface hardness and wear resistance of 2024 Al alloy were increased simultaneously by duplex treatment. The untreated specimen exhibited severe adhesive wear while the nitrided one behaved in middle abrasive wear.

A cathodic plasma electrolytic nitriding(CPEN) treatment with a urea aqueous solution was performed on 316L stainless steel to rapidly improve its surface properties in this work.Test results show that the PEG2000 macromolecules increased the nitriding energy via enhancing the ability to bond the produced gas film to the metal/electrolyte interface. The cross-sectional morphologies indicate that a thick nitrided layer was obtained when the urea concentration was 543 g I~(-1),corresponding to a Vickers hardness 450 HV_(0.1),which was 3.5 times larger than that of the substrate. The nitrided layer mainly contained expanded austenite(γ_N),oxides and iron nitrides(e.g.,Fe_3O_4 and FeN_(0.076)).In terms of its performance, coefficient of friction(COF) of the nitride layer decreased to nearly two-thirds that of the untreated layer, and the passivation current densities of the nitrided sample in a 3.5% NaCl solution decreased by an order of magnitude compared to that of the substrate. Therefore, the approach presented herein provides an attractive way to modify the effect of CPEN in a urea aqueous solution.
