Removal of toxic heavy metal ions from environmental and biological systems is important, but the use of commercially available heavy metal adsorbents is complicated by the need for specific pretreatment steps. We chose to study human hair treated with perm lotion as a heavy metal adsorbent because it is readily available and contains a large number of sulfur atoms for strong coordination to heavy metal ions. The optimal pH of adsorption by perm lotion-treated human hair was 4.16, which was slightly higher than the isoelectric point (pI) of the hair. The maximum removal ratio at pH 4.16 was 88.5% for a 50 ppm Cu2+ solution, and 96.79% for a 50 ppm Pb2+ solution. Almost 90% of the Pb2+ was removed from a 120 ppm Pb2+ solution. The perm-lotion-treated human hair was a cation-selective adsorbent.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Several researchers have investigated the use of chitosan as an adsorbent for removal of heavy metals from aqueous streams. Chitosan flake or powder swells and crumbles making it unsuitable for use in an adsorption column. Chitosan also has a tendency to agglomerate or form a gel in aqueous media. The adsorption capacity can be enhanced by spreading chitosan on physical supports that can increase the accessibility of the metal binding sites. Although several attempts have been made to enhance the adsorption capacity of chitosan, using various chemicals, the sorption capacity for metal ions decreased after cross‐linking of chitosan. RESULTS: Bentonite was coated with chitosan (Chi) and its derivative, 3,4‐dimethoxy‐benzaldehyde (Chi/DMB). The product was then used as adsorbent for the removal of Cd2+ from aqueous solutions. The presence of imine groups resulting from chemical modification was confirmed using IR, DRS and SEM. The adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm and could be described by pseudo‐second order kinetics. CONCLUSION: Chi/DMB coated on bentonite increased the accessibility of metal binding sites. The Chi/DMB/bentonite showed no significant pH dependence in the pH range 2–9, but bentonite coated with chitosan revealed very intensive pH dependence, which had a considerable effect on cadmium removal. As expected adsorption of Cd2+ by Chi/bentonite and Chi/DMB/bentonite is dependent on contact time and adsorbent dose. In addition, an EDTA solution is suitable for desorption of cadmium ions, and the reusability of Chi/DMB/bentonite is quite good. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Mn2O3 microspheres are prepared and used as adsorbent for removal of heavy metal ions. Morphology and structure of Mn2O3 microspheres are analyzed by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and N2 sorption technique. Effects of adsorbent concentration, ion concentration and agitation time on adsorption behavior are investigated. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics are also studied. The results show Mn2O3 microspheres have well-developed porous and hollow structure, demonstrating good potential on removal of heavy metal ions. Adsorption data fit better with Freundlich isotherms than Langmuir isotherms. Kinetic studies indicate adsorption behavior is described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and intra-particle diffusion plays a significant role.  相似文献

The present study deals with the adsorption of arsenic ions from aqueous solution on polyaniline/rice husk (PAn/RH) nanocomposite. Batch studies were performed to evaluate the influence of various experimental parameters like pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and the effect of temperature. Optimum conditions for arsenic removal were found to be pH 10, adsorbent dosage of 10 g/L and equilibrium time 30 minutes. Adsorption of arsenic followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm was better described by Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. The adsorption capacity (q max ) of PAn/RH for arsenic ions in terms of monolayer adsorption was 34.48 mg/g. The change of entropy (ΔS0) and enthalpy (ΔH0) was estimated at −0.066 kJ/(mol K) and −22.49 kJ/mol, respectively. The negative value of the Gibbs free energy (ΔG0) indicates feasible and spontaneous adsorption of arsenic on PAn/RH.  相似文献

A novel Valine coated magnetic nano-particles (MNPs-Val) has been synthesized for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution. The MNPs-Val were developed by electrostatic attraction of valine (C5H11NO2) on the bare surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and characterized by using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and TEM analysis. The morphology and average particles size 15-27 nm of MNPs-Val were analyzed by SEM and TEM. The coated MNPs were applied for adsorptive removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Factors affecting the adsorption of Cd(II) ions on the MNPs-Val surface such as the pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and contact time were investigated which have significant effect on the metal ion removal. The Cd(II) ions adsorption equilibrium on the MNPs-Val could be achieved in 35 min at the optimized pH 5 and follow the pseudo-second order kinetics model. The experimental data for the adsorption of Cd(II) was followed by the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at 0.2 g L?1 adsorbent dose at 308 K.  相似文献

The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of a new adsorbent prepared from coconut coir pith (CP), a coir industry‐based lignocellulosic residue in removing metal ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent (PGCP‐COOH) having a carboxylate functional group at the chain end was prepared by grafting polyacrylamide onto CP using potassium peroxydisulphate as an initiator and in the presence of N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent. The adsorbent was characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and potentiometric titration. The adsorbent exhibits very high adsorption potential for the removal of Pb(II), Hg(II), and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The optimum pH range for metal ion removal was found to be 6.0–8.0. The adsorption process follows a pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model. The adsorption capacities for Hg(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) calculated using the Langmuir isotherm equation were 254.52, 189.49, and 63.72 mg g?1, respectively. Adsorption isotherm experiments were also conducted for comparison with a commercial carboxylate form cation exchanger. Different industry wastewater samples were treated by the PGCP‐COOH to demonstrate its efficiency in removing heavy metals from wastewater. The reusability of the PGCP‐COOH was also demonstrated using 0.2M HCl. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 104: 3670–3681, 2007  相似文献

Abstract

An electron beam grafted adsorbent was synthesized by post irradiation grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) on to a non‐woven thermally bonded polypropylene (PP) sheet using 2 MeV electron beam accelerator. The grafted poly(acrylonitrile) chains were chemically modified to convert a nitrile group to an amidoxime (AMO) group, a chelating group responsible for metal ion uptake from an aqueous solution. The effect of various experimental variables viz. dose, dose rate, temperature, and solvent composition on the grafting extent was investigated. PP grafted with the amidoxime group (AMO‐g‐PP) was tested for its suitability as an adsorbent for removal of heavy metal ions such as Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and Cd2+ from aqueous solution. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were used to investigate the type of adsorption of these ions. The adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for the metal ions were found to follow the order Cd2+>Co2+>Ni2+>Mn2+. The kinetics of adsorption of these ions indicated that the rate of adsorption of Cd2+ was faster than that of other ions studied.  相似文献

Arsenic and nitrate are ill-famed environmental pollutants that are responsible for various lethal diseases. Their removal from drinking water is very essential. In present study, newly synthesized alumina supported nano zerovalent zinc (Alumina-nZvZ) has been tested to remove arsenic and nitrate. Quantitative analyses of arsenic have been performed spectrophotometrically and while that of nitrates ions colorimetrically. After optimization of time and amount of adsorbent, Langmuir, Freundlich and D-R isotherms were applied to determine different parameters for the assessment of adsorption. Synthesized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate porosity and void size. Alumina coated with reduced ZnCl 2 showed better efficiency for removal of arsenic and nitrate ions. Kinetics of adsorption was evaluated by using pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order rate equations.  相似文献

The indigenous materials such as tea waste were exploited as antimicrobial adsorbent for removing heavy metal ions. It was well known that tea waste was characterized with biodegradability and environmental-friendly product. Grafting copolymerization of acrylic acid onto tea waste was carried out using gamma radiation. The effects of solvent, dose and feeding concentration of acrylic acid have been investigated to achieve the optimum conditions. Grating (%) ranged from 30 to 70 for DMSO and H2O, respectively. The grafted tea waste was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, swelling study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry X-rays (EDS). The grafted samples were used in waste water treatment to remove heavy metal ions (Cr3+, Pb2+ and Hg2+). The highest adsorption capacity was 35 and 200 mg/g of Hg+2 ions for ungrafted and grafted samples, respectively. The results showed that the selectivity among these metal ions is different onto tea waste-graft-polyacrylic acid. The grafted tea waste samples, which complexed with Cr3+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ ions, were found to have antimicrobial features. Therefore, they could be used as adsorbent in removing heavy metal ions with antimicrobial features as well.

The adsorption properties of chitin adsorbent from mycelium of fermentation industries for the removal of heavy metal ions were studied. The result shows that the chitin adsorbent has high adsorption capacity for many heavy metal ions and Ni^2 in citric acid. The influence of pH was significant:When pH is higher than 4.0,the high adsorption capacity is obtained.otherwise H^ ion inhibits the adsorption of heavy metal ions. The comparison of the chitin adsorbent with some other commercial adsorbents was made,in which that the adsorption behavior of chitin adsorbent is close to that of commercial cation exchange adsorbents, and its cost is much lower than those commercial adsorbents.  相似文献

Arsenic poisoning is a major problem in today's life. To reduce its concentration in drinking water, different metal based compounds were explored as arsenic adsorbents. In the present study, copper (II) oxide nanoparticles were prepared by thermal refluxing technique and used as an adsorbent for arsenic removal from water. Characterization of the adsorbent using TEM, BET, XRD and FTIR implied that the prepared adsorbent was in nano size and had excellent adsorption behavior with surface area of 52.11 m2/g. Systematic adsorption experiments were carried out with different process parameters such as contact time, adsorbent mass, pH, temperature and stirring speed and found that copper (II) oxide had very good efficiency towards arsenic adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters and adsorption kinetics were studied in detailed to know the nature and mechanism of adsorption. Results showed that the adsorption process followed pseudo second order kinetic and endothermic behavior. Adsorption equilibrium was studied with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption process followed Langmuir isotherm with an adsorption capacity of 1086.2 μg/g. A regeneration study was proposed in order to reuse the adsorbent for better economy of the process. Finally, a process design calculation is reported to know the amount of adsorbent required for efficient removal of arsenic from aqueous medium.  相似文献

Arsenic is a critical contaminant for aqueous environments as it poses harmful health risks. To meet the stringent regulations regarding the presence of arsenic in aqueous solutions, the feasibility of montmorillonite clay modified with hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride as the adsorbent was tested for the removal of arsenic ions from aqueous solutions. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study confirmed that the organically modified nanoclay (ONC) adsorbent had a porous structure with a vast adsorbent surface. The x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis proved the presence of carbon in the structure of the modified nanoclay that can be evidence for the creation of ONC. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results confirm the existence of four main groups of minerals, carbonate (Calcite), clay (Askmtyt and Kandyt), silicate (Quartz), and phyllosilicate (Kaolinite), in the ONC structure. The influence of various parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, initial arsenite concentration, and contact time on arsenic adsorption onto ONC was investigated. A 25 full factorial central composite experimental design was applied. A central composite design under response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of independent variables on arsenite removal and to determine the optimum condition. The experimental values were in a good fit with the ones predicted by the model. The optimal operating points (adsorbent dosage: 3.7 g L?1, surfactant dosage: 3 g L?1 and the contact time: 37.2min) giving maximum arsenite removal (95.95%) were found using Solver “Add-ins” in Microsoft Excel 2010.  相似文献

A heterocyclic modification of chitosan has been attempted for development of an effective adsorbent material for removal of metal ions. The modified polymer was characterized using infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The adsorption capacity exhibited for Cu (II) and Cr (VI) were 83.75 and 85.0 mgg?1, respectively, which is a significant improvement over chitosan. The adsorption on the modified polymer was a second-order kinetic process and followed Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated exothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption. About 80% of the adsorbed metal ions were desorbed in appropriate stripping solutions indicating reusability.  相似文献

Growing amount of waste plastics has become an environmental problem on a global scale. This study presents an investigation of the conditions of cleaning water from heavy metal ions using chemically recycled polystyrene. To get effective ion exchangers, the sulfonation of virgin polystyrene and expanded polystyrene wastes were obtained using silica sulfuric acid. As it turned out, the use of this solid sulfonating agent simplifies the separation of the polymeric product from the acid and the solvent in comparison to conventional sulfonation methods. The ion exchange behavior of copper and zinc cations in the yielded sulfonated derivatives of polystyrene was studied. Batch shaking adsorption experiments depending on contact time, pH, temperature, and dosage of adsorbate were carried out. The stability of resin to cyclical adsorption and regeneration (column experiment) was also investigated. We report that resins have a high adsorption efficiency with total ion exchange capacity (IEC) about 2.6 meq g?1, which drops with decreasing pH owing to competition between protons H+ and metal cations, whereas with the increasing resin doses the removal of cations rises for a constant initial metal concentration. The speed of cation exchange for yielded adsorbents was even better than for commercial resins. After 360 cyclical adsorption and regeneration in column, resin had working IEC of about 2.3 meq g?1. The study shows that cation exchange resin from polystyrene wastes can be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from water. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Waste coffee-grounds (CG) with micro- and macropores are a potential biosorbent for the removal of organics or heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In several studies, CG was used as adsorbent for removal of heavy metal ions and organics (phenolic compounds). We investigated the potential application of CG as biosorbents for the removal of acid dye (Acid Red 44). To evaluate objectively the adsorption performance of the CG, conventional adsorbent (DA, Degussa alumina) was also tested and our previous reported data for mesoporous materials compared. In adsorption kinetics, experimental data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and intraparticle diffusion was rate-controlled. The maximum uptake (Qm) capacity of CG proved half of DA, but its adsorption rate was fast (less than 1 h). Namely, Qm of CG is 27.8mg/g, and smaller than that of mesoporous adsorbents. However, coffee-ground biosorbent still possesses economical advantages compared to inorganic adsorbents.  相似文献

In order to realize the value-added resource utilization of solid waste, geopolymer particle adsorbents were prepared at low temperatures using silica-aluminum-rich fly ash and steel slag powders as raw materials. In order to investigate the mechanism of their adsorption of dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater, the effects of steel slag/fly ash ratio, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of methylene blue (MB) and Cu2+ solution, adsorption time and temperature on the adsorption performance of the fly ash/steel slag-based geopolymer adsorbents were investigated, systematically. Results presented that the adsorption capacities of MB and Cu2+ were 33.30 and 24.15 mg/g, and the removal efficiencies were 99.90% and 96.59% with the dosages of 3 and 4 g/L geopolymer adsorbents (steel slag/fly ash ratio of 20 wt.%), respectively. The adsorption processes of MB and Cu2+ on the adsorbents were in accordance with the proposed pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, which mainly included physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. The fly ash/steel slag-based geopolymer had good removal ability for dyes and heavy metal ions, and it could maintain good adsorption performance after three cycles of regeneration. It had potential application in wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Recently a new form of activated carbon has appeared: carbon aerogel (CA). Its use for the removal of inorganic (and especially metal ions) has not been studied. In the present study, the adsorption of three metal ions, Hg(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II), onto carbon aerogel has been investigated. Batch experiments were carried out to assess adsorption equilibria and kinetic behaviour of heavy metal ions by varying parameters such as agitation time, metal ions' concentration, adsorbent dose and pH. They facilitated the computation of kinetic parameters and maximum metal ion adsorption capacities. Increasing the initial solution pH (2–10) and carbon concentration (50–500 mg per 50 cm3) increases the removal of all three metal ions. A decrease of equilibrium pH with an increase of metal ion concentration led us to propose an adsorption mechanism by ion exchange between metal cations and H+ at the carbon aerogel surface. Carboxylic groups are especially involved in this adsorption mechanism. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to analyse the experimental data of carbon aerogel. The thermodynamics of the metal adsorption was also investigated for the practical implementation of the adsorbent. The sorption showed significant increase with increase of temperature. Kinetics models describing the adsorption of Hg(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions onto carbon aerogel have been compared. Kinetics models evaluated include the pseudo‐first order and second order model. The parameters of the adsorption rate constants have been determined and the effectiveness of each model assessed. The result obtained showed that the pseudo‐second order kinetic model correlated well with the experimental data and better than the pseudo‐first order model examined in the study. Mass transfer coefficients obtained can be useful in designing wastewater treatment systems or in the development of environmental technologies. Heavy metals pollutants are nonbiodegradable and their bioaccumulation results in detrimental environmental consequences. Therefore, it is important to effectively remove toxic heavy metal waste from industrial sewage. Thus, the main goal of this research is to synthesize an ideal cellulose-based adsorbent from palm-based waste materials (agro waste) in order to be utilized in real-life practical applications with low cost as such removing common toxic heavy metals from industrial effluents. A poly(methyl acrylate) grafted palm cellulose was synthesized via a free-radical initiation process, followed by an oximation reaction to yield poly(hydroxamic acid) ligands. The adsorption capacity (qe) of poly(hydroxamic acid) ligands for metal ions such as copper (Cu2+), iron (Fe3+), and lead (Pb2+) were 325, 220, and 300 mg g−1, respectively at pH 6. In addition, the X-ray photoelectron spectrometry results are to be proved the binding of metal ions, for instance, Cu(II) ions showed typically significant BEs of 932.7 and 952.0 eV corresponding to the Cu2p3/2 and Cu2p1/2 species. The heavy metal ions adsorption followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model pathway. The adsorption capacity (qm) is also derived from the Langmuir isotherm linear plot, which does not showed good correction coefficients. However, the results were correlated to the Freundlich isotherm model, where the R2 value showed significance (>0.98), indicating that multiple layer adsorption occurs on the synthesized ligand. The synthesized polymeric ligand is an excellent adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals from the industrial wastewater. In addition, the metal analysis results showed that about 98% removal of copper and iron ions from electroplating wastewater including lead, nickel, and chromium can be removed up to 85–97%.  相似文献
