Understanding the behavior of concrete and mortar at very high strain rates is of critical importance in a range of applications. Under highly dynamic conditions, the strain-rate dependence of material response and high levels of hydrostatic pressure cause the material behavior to be significantly different from what is observed under quasistatic conditions. The behavior of concrete and mortar at strain rates of the order of 104 s−1 and pressures up to 1.5 GPa are studied experimentally. The mortar analyzed has the same composition and processing conditions as the matrix phase in the concrete, allowing the effect of concrete microstructure to be delineated. The focus is on the effects of loading rate, hydrostatic pressure and microstructural heterogeneity on the load-carrying capacities of the materials. This experimental investigation uses split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and plate impact to achieve a range of loading rate and hydrostatic pressure. The SHPB experiments involve strain rates between 250 and 1700 s−1 without lateral confinement and the plate impact experiments subject the materials to deformation at strain rates of the order of 104 s−1 with confining pressures of 1–1.5 GPa. Experiments indicate that the load-carrying capacities of the concrete and mortar increase significantly with strain rate and hydrostatic pressure. The compressive flow stress of mortar at a strain rate of 1700 s−1 is approximately four times its quasistatic strength. Under the conditions of plate impact involving impact velocities of approximately 330 ms−1, the average flow stress is 1.7 GPa for the concrete and 1.3 GPa for the mortar. In contrast, the corresponding unconfined quasistatic compressive strengths are only 30 and 46 MPa, respectively. Due to the composite microstructure of concrete, deformation and stresses are nonuniform in the specimens. The effects of material inhomogeneity on the measurements during the impact experiments are analyzed using a four-beam VISAR laser interferometer system.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to characterize the structure of the beak of Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) and to investigate means for arresting fractures in the rhinotheca using acrylic resin. The structure of the rhamphastid bill has been described as a sandwich structured composite having a thin exterior comprised of keratin and a thick foam core constructed of mineralized collagenous rods (trabeculae). The keratinous rhamphotheca consists of superposed polygonal scales (approximately 50 µm in diameter and 1 µm in thickness). In order to simulate the orientation of loading to which the beak is subjected during exertion of bite force, for example, we conducted flexure tests on the dorso-ventral axis of the maxilla. The initially intact (without induced fracture) beak fractured in the central portion when subjected to a force of 270 N, at a displacement of 23 mm. The location of this fracture served as a reference for the fractures induced in other beaks tested. The second beak was fractured and repaired by applying resin on both lateral surfaces. The repaired maxilla sustained a force of 70 N with 6.5 mm deflection. The third maxilla was repaired similarly except that it was conditioned in acid for 60 s prior to fixation with resin. It resisted a force of up to 63 N at 6 mm of deflection. The experimental results were compared with finite element calculations for unfractured beak in bending configuration. The repaired specimens were found to have strength equal to only one third of the intact beak. Finite element simulations allow visualization of how the beak system (sandwich shell and cellular core) sustains high flexural strength.  相似文献

Nanostructured cobalt powders with an average particle size of 50 nm were synthesized using a polyol method and subsequently consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). SPS experiments performed at 650 °C with sintering times ranging from 5 to 45 min under a pressure of 100 MPa, yielded to dense bulk nanostructured cobalt (relative density greater than 97%). X-ray diffraction patterns of the as-prepared powders showed only a face centered cubic (fcc) crystalline phase, whereas the consolidated samples exhibited a mixture of both fcc and hexagonal close packed (hcp) phases. Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed a lamellar substructure with a high density of nanotwins and stacking faults in every grain of the sintered samples. Room temperature compression tests, carried out at a strain rate of 10 3 s 1, yielded to highest strain to fracture values of up to 5% for sample of holding time of 15 min, which exhibited a yield strength of 1440 MPa, an ultimate strength as high as 1740 MPa and a Young's modulus of 205 GPa. The modulus of elasticity obtained from the nanoindentation tests, ranges from 181 to 218 GPa. The lowest modulus value of 181 GPa was obtained for the sample with the highest sintering time (45 min), which could be related to mass density loss as a consequence of trapped gases releasing.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of open-cell Ni–20Cr foams were studied by uniaxial compression tests, which were performed at a strain rate of 10 3 s 1 at ambient temperature, 250 °C, 400 °C and 550 °C respectively. Then, the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of these foams was analyzed. It was found that both the compressive strength and energy absorbed by Ni–20Cr foam at elevated temperatures became lower than those at room temperature. The compressive strength changed with temperatures in a form of parabola, which satisfied the model derived from Gibson–Ashby model combined with Kocks' kinetic model. A multi-parameter phenomenological elasto-plastic constitutive model was modified to take the temperature effect into consideration. The relationships between model parameters and temperature were determined. The fitting stress–strain curves of the model were in good agreement with the experimental results.  相似文献

An analytical method is presented for the prediction of compressive strength at high strain rate loading for composites. The method is based on variable rate power law. Using this analytical method, high strain rate compressive stress–strain behavior is presented up to strain rate of 5000 s−1 starting with the experimentally determined compressive strength values at relatively lower strain rates. Experimental results were generated in the strain rate range of 472–1957 s−1 for a typical woven fabric E-glass/epoxy laminated composite along all the three principal directions. The laminated composite was made using resin film infusion technique. The experimental studies were carried out using compressive split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus. It was generally observed that the compressive strength is enhanced at high strain rate loading compared with that at quasi-static loading. Also, compressive strength increased with increasing strain rate in the range of parameters considered. Analytically predicted results are compared with the experimental results up to strain rate of 1957 s−1.  相似文献

Compression behaviour and micro-structure evaluation of Zr57Nb5Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10 bulk metallic glass is investigated at room temperature up to 32.8 GPa using in-situ high pressure energy dispersive X-ray diffraction with a synchrotron radiation source. The equation of state of the bulk metallic glass is − ΔV / V = 0.012P  2.49 × 10 4P2  9.5 × 10 7P3 + 5.02 × 10 8P4. The result shows that the nearest atom pair of the as-quenched bulk metallic glass corresponds to Zr–Zr correlations. And with pressure increasing, the nearest atom pair changes to a new one at 32.8 GPa.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the flow stress and the dynamic softening characteristics of casting 42CrMo steel, isothermal upsetting experiments with height reduction 60% were performed at the temperatures of 1123 K, 1198 K, 1273 K and 1348 K, and the strain rates of 0.01 s−1, 0.1 s−1, 1 s−1 and 10 s−1 on thermal physics simulator Gleeble 1500. The flow behavior of the applied stress as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature exhibits a more pronounced effect of temperature than strain rate, and a typical characteristic of dynamic recrystallization softening. To characterize the flow behavior more factually and accurately, the traditional Fields–Backofen equation was amended, and an innovative mathematical model containing a softening item s, n-value and m-value variable functions was brought forth. The stress–strain curves calculated by the derived flow stress equation are fit with the experimental results well not only at the hardening stage but also at softening stage.  相似文献

Quasi-static (1 × 10−3–1 × 10−2 s−1) and high strain rate (∼1000 s−1) compressive mechanical response and fracture/failure of a (±45) symmetric E-glass/polyester composite along three perpendicular directions were determined experimentally and numerically. A numerical model in LS-DYNA 971 using material model MAT_162 was developed to investigate the compression deformation and fracture of the composite at quasi-static and high strain rates. The compressive stress–strain behaviors of the composite along three directions were found strain rate sensitive. The modulus and maximum stress of the composite increased with increasing strain rate, while the strain rate sensitivity in in-plane direction was higher than that in through-thickness direction. The damage progression determined by high speed camera in the specimens well agreed with that of numerical model. The numerical model successfully predicted the damage initiation and progression as well as the failure modes of the composite.  相似文献

The high temperature flow behavior of as-extruded Ti–47.5Al–Cr–V alloy has been investigated at the temperature between 1100 °C and 1250 °C and the strain rate range from 0.001 s 1 to 1 s 1 by hot compression tests. The results showed that the flow stress of this alloy had a positive dependence on strain rate and a negative dependence on deformation temperature. The activation energy Q was calculated to be 409 kJ/mol and the constitutive model of this material was established. By combining the power dissipation map with instability map, the processing map was established to optimize the deformation parameters. The optimum deformation parameter was at 1150 °C–1200 °C and 0.001 s 1–0.03 s 1 for this alloy. The microstructure of specimens deformed at different conditions was analyzed and connected with the processing map. The material underwent instability deformation at the strain rate of 1 s 1, which was predicted by the instability map. The surface fracture was observed to be the identification of the instability.  相似文献

In this study, the constitutive equation and DRX(Dynamic recrystallization) model of Nuclear Pressure Vessel Material 20MnNiMo steel were established to study the work hardening and dynamic softening behavior based on the flow behavior, which was investigated by hot compression experiment at temperature of 950 °C, 1050 °C, 1150 °C and 1250 °C with strain rate of 0.01 s−1, 0.1 s−1 and 10 s−1 on a thermo-mechanical simulator THE RMECMASTOR-Z. The critical conditions for the occurence of dynamic recrystallization were determined based on the strain hardening rate curves of 20MnNiMo steel. Then the model of volume fraction of DRX was established to analyze the DRX behavior based on flow curves. At last, the strain rate sensitivity and activation volume V* of 20MnNiMo steel were calculated to discuss the mechanisms of work hardening and dynamic softening during the hot forming process. The results show that the volume fraction of DRX is lower with the higher value of Z (Zener–Hollomon parameter), which indicated that the DRX fraction curves can accurately predicte the DRX behavior of 20MnNiMo steel. The storage and annihilation of dislocation at off-equilibrium saturation situation is the main reason that the strain has significant effects on SRS(Strain rate sensitivity) at the low strain rate of 0.01 s−1 and 0.1 s−1. While, the effects of temperature on the SRS are caused by the uniformity of microstructure distribution. And the cross-slip caused by dislocation piled up which beyond the grain boundaries or obstacles is related to the low activation volume under the high Z deformation conditions. Otherwise, the coarsening of DRX grains is the main reason for the high activation volume at low Z under the same strain conditions.  相似文献

Three-dimensional braided carbon fiber-reinforced ZrC matrix composite, 3-D Cf/ZrC, were prepared by liquid metal infiltration process at 1200 °C using a Zr2Cu intermetallic compound as infiltrator. The microstructure and properties of the composites were investigated. The results indicated that ZrC with a yield of 35.2 ± 1.8 vol.% was certified as the major phase of the composites. The formation of ZrC was controlled by a solution-precipitation mechanism. The obtained composites exhibited good mechanical properties, with a flexural strength of 293.0 ± 12.1 MPa, a flexural modulus of 82.7 ± 6.4 GPa and a fracture toughness of 9.8 ± 0.9 MPa m1/2. The mass and linear ablation rates of the composites exposed to oxyacetylene torch were 0.0013 ± 0.0005 g s−1 and −0.0009 ± 0.0003 mm s−1, respectively. The formation of a dense ZrO2 protective layer and the evaporation of residual Cu contributed mainly to the excellent ablation resistance.  相似文献

A new technique for measuring dynamic tensile behavior of metallic materials at elevated temperatures was developed. This technique employs a rapid contact heating method to obtain a stable and nearly homogenous high temperature field in the testing gage of the specimen. As an application of this new technique, a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was tested in the strain rate range of 300 s−1–1400 s−1 and in a temperature range of 298 K–973 K. Quasi-static experiments (10−3 s−1, 10−2 s−1) were also performed in the same temperature range for comparison. The testing results indicated that both temperature and strain rate have pronounced influence on the mechanical behavior of CP-Ti.  相似文献

This paper reported a strain rate dependent plasticity in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) under axial compression over a strain rate range (1.6 × 10−5–1.6 × 10−1 s−1). The fracture strain decreased with increasing strain rate up to 1.6 × 10−3 s−1. A “brittle-to-malleable” mutation occurred at strain rate of 1.6 × 10−2 s−1, subsequently, the macro plasticity vanished at 1.6 × 10−1 s−1. It is proposed that the result is strongly related to the combined action of the applied strain rate, the compression speed, and the propagating speed of the shear band. When the three factors coordinated in the optimal condition, multiple mature shear bands were initiated simultaneously to accommodate the applied strain, which propagated through the specimen and distributed homogeneously in space, dominating the overall plastic deformation by consuming the entire specimen effectively.  相似文献

Superplastic behavior of fine and ultra fine-grained AA5083 Al alloy was examined using the shear punch test. To achieve fine- and ultra fine-grained microstructures, a relatively new severe plastic deformation (SPD) process, namely Double Equal Channel Lateral Extrusion (DECLE) was employed. The strain rate sensitivity indices (m) of samples were evaluated after 1, 2, 4, and 6 passes for shear strain rates in the range of 3 × 10 3 to 3 × 10 1 s 1 and temperatures in the range of 573 to 673 K. For microstructural observations, TEM images together with the corresponding SAED patterns were prepared and utilized. A considerable increase in the m-value was observed after the first pass of the operation for all testing temperatures. The best condition for achieving a good superplasticity for the alloy was found to be a single pass DECLE at 673 K in the strain rate range of 10 2 to 10 1 s 1. This process condition resulted in an m-value of 0.43, indicative of a high strain rate superplastic deformation behavior. Further passes of the SPD process did not show any sign of superplasticity until the last pass of the operation, during which the m-value slightly increased, compared with the previous pass.  相似文献

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is an important insulator, frequently used in VLSI technology and for encapsulation. Conventionally it is prepared by low pressure and plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition, but may also be successfully deposited by RF sputtering. In the present work the sputtering process was characterised, together with some measurements on the high-field DC electrical properties in sandwich samples with Au electrodes. Films were Ar-sputtered using a Si3N4 sputtering target at gas pressures up to 2.12 Pa and RF discharge powers of 60–200 W. The deposition rate R was in the range 0.03–0.19 nm s 1 and was directly proportional to the discharge power and varied linearly with the pressure. Au electrodes formed sandwich structures with thicknesses of 50 nm–1 μm. Conductivity was essentially ohmic below 300 nm, while for the thicker films space-charge limited conductivity, dominated by an exponential distribution of traps, was observed. A mobility value of μ = 2.89 × 10 6 m2 V 1 s 1 was derived from temperature measurements, and further analysis of the JV data indicated a thermally generated electron concentration of 3.23 × 1019 m 3 and a trap concentration of 1.57 × 1024 m 3. It was concluded that this method is suitable for the deposition of thin films, which have similar electrical properties to those prepared by chemical vapour deposition methods.  相似文献

This paper describes the use of a material testing system (MTS) and a compressive split-Hopkinson bar to investigate the impact behaviour of sintered 316L stainless steel at strain rates ranging from 10 3 s 1 to 7.5 × 103 s 1. It is found that the flow stress–strain response of the sintered 316L stainless steel depends strongly on the applied strain rate. The rate of work hardening and the strain rate sensitivity change significantly as the strain rate increases. The flow behaviour of the sintered 316L stainless steel can be accurately predicted using a constitutive law based on Gurson's yield criterion and the flow rule of Khan, Huang and Liang (KHL). Microstructural observations reveal that the degree of localized grain deformation increases at higher strain rates. However, the pore density and the grain size vary as a reversible function of the strain rate. Impacts at strain rates higher than 5.6 × 103 s 1 are found to induce adiabatic shear bands in the specimens. These specimens subsequently fail as a result of crack propagation along the dominant band. The fracture surfaces of the failed specimens are characterized by dimple-like structures, which are indicative of ductile failure. The depth and the density of these dimples are found to decrease with increasing strain rate. This observation indicates a reduction in the fracture resistance and is consistent with the observed macroscopic flow stress–strain response.  相似文献

The influence of hot top design on feeder channel segregates (F-CS) and centerline shrinkage porosities (C-SP) were investigated both experimentally and numerically. Two 100-ton 30Cr2Ni4MoV steel ingots with different insulating hot tops were longitudinally sectioned. The experimental results showed few channel segregates but severe shrinkage porosities appeared in the ingot with poorly insulated hot top, while it was the opposite case after the improved hot topping practice. By employing the finite element numerical simulation, the critical condition for the formation of F-CS in 30Cr2Ni4MoV steel was verified to be R2.1G  1.0 × 10 5 °C mm1.1 s 2.1. Through coupling with the published C-SP criterion (GR 0.5  2.5 °C mm 1.5 s0.5), it was found out that the increase of hot-top height and preheating temperature would aggravate F-CS while alleviate C-SP contrarily. Hence, to comprehensively control those two defects, the optimum hot-top height and preheating temperature for 100-ton ingot were suggested to be 700 mm and 600 °C, respectively. Ultimately, the ratio of the solidification time for the whole ingot to the ingot body (tf/tb) was proposed as a novel criterion for hot top design. This practical criterion has been successfully utilized to optimize the hot top of a 5-ton steel ingot.  相似文献

The hot shear deformation behavior of an extruded Mg–12Li–1Zn alloy was studied by shear punch test (SPT) in the temperature range 200–300 °C, and in the shear strain rate range 1.2 × 10−3–6.0 × 10−2 s−1. Based on the constitutive analysis of the SPT data, it was found that a sine hyperbolic function could properly describe the hot shear deformation behavior of the material. The activation energy of 108 kJ mol−1 calculated from sine hyperbolic function together with the power-law stress exponents of 3.6–4.7 is indicative of lattice-diffusion-controlled dislocation climb mechanism as an operative deformation mechanism. As a new approach, the shear processing map was developed in order to determine the optimum processing condition, which was found to be 300 °C and 1.2 × 10−3 s−1. Domains of the processing map are also interpreted on the basis of the associated microstructural observations. It was found that the post-deformation microstructure is sensitive to the Zener–Hollomon parameter, so that DRX was encouraged with decreasing Z-value.  相似文献

Isothermal forging was a critical step process to fabricate the high-performance nickel-based superalloy. The temperature and strain rate served the most critical role in determining its microstructure and mechanical properties. In this article, we employed the hot compression to simulate the isothermal forging process upon the temperature ranging from 1000 °C to 1100 °C in combination with a strain rate of 0.001–1.0 s 1 for a new P/M nickel-based alloy. The activation energy was determined as 903.58 kJ/mol and the processing maps at a strain range of 0.4–0.7 were developed. The instability domains were more inclined to occur at strain rates higher than 0.1 s 1 and manifested in the form of adiabatic shear bands. The map further demonstrated that the regions with peak efficiency of 55% were located at 1080 °C/0.0015 s 1 and 1095 °C/0.014 s 1, respectively. Obvious dynamic recrystallization could be detected at the strain rate 0.01 s 1 leading to a significant flow stress drop and the grain growth was remarkably triggered under 1100 °C. The findings can shed light on the forging processing optimization of the new nickel-based superalloy.  相似文献

High temperature compressive deformation behaviors of as-cast Ti–43Al–4Nb–1.4W–0.6B alloy were investigated at temperatures ranging from 1050 °C to 1200 °C, and strain rates from 0.001 s 1 to 1 s 1. Electron back scattered diffraction technique, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were employed to investigate the microstructural evolutions and nucleation mechanisms of the dynamic recrystallization. The results indicated that the true stress–true strain curves show a dynamic flow softening behavior. The dependence of the peak stress on the deformation temperature and the strain rate can well be expressed by a hyperbolic-sine type equation. The activation energy decreases with increasing the strain. The size of the dynamically recrystallized β grains decreases with increasing the value of the Zener–Hollomon parameter (Z). When the flow stress reaches a steady state, the size of β grains almost remains constant with increasing the deformation strain. The continuous dynamic recrystallization plays a dominant role in the deformation. In order to characterize the evolution of dynamic recrystallization volume fraction, the dynamic recrystallization kinetics was studied by Avrami-type equation. Besides, the role of β phase and the softening mechanism during the hot deformation was also discussed in details.  相似文献
