The purpose of this study was to assess sleep quality and comfort of participants diagnosed with low back pain and stiffness following sleep on individually prescribed mattresses based on dominant sleeping positions. Subjects consisted of 27 patients (females, n = 14; males, n = 13; age 44.8 yrs ± SD 14.6, weight 174 lb. ±SD 39.6, height 68.3 in. ± SD 3.7) referred by chiropractic physicians for the study. For the baseline (pretest) data subjects recorded back and shoulder discomfort, sleep quality and comfort by visual analog scales (VAS) for 21 days while sleeping in their own beds. Subsequently, participants’ beds were replaced by medium-firm mattresses specifically layered with foam and latex based on the participants’ reported prominent sleeping position and they again rated their sleep comfort and quality daily for the following 12 weeks. Analysis yielded significant differences between pre- and post means for all variables and for back pain, we found significant (p < 0.01) differences between the first posttest mean and weeks 4 and weeks 8-12, thus indicating progressive improvement in both back pain and stiffness while sleeping on the new mattresses. Additionally, the number of days per week of experiencing poor sleep and physical discomfort decreased significantly. It was concluded that sleep surfaces are related to sleep discomfort and that is indeed possible to reduce pain and discomfort and to increase sleep quality in those with chronic back pain by replacing mattresses based on sleeping position.  相似文献

The amount of sleep obtained between shifts is influenced by numerous factors including the length of work and rest periods, the timing of the rest period relative to the endogenous circadian cycle and personal choices about the use of non-work time. The current study utilised a real-world live-in mining environment to examine the amount of sleep obtained when access to normal domestic, family and social activities was restricted. Participants were 29 mining operators (26 male, average age 37.4 ± 6.8 years) who recorded sleep, work and fatigue information and wore an activity monitor for a cycle of seven day shifts and seven night shifts (both 12 h) followed by either seven or fourteen days off. During the two weeks of work participants lived on-site. Total sleep time was significantly less (p < 0.01) while on-site on both day (6.1 ± 1.0 h) and night shifts (5.7 ± 1.5 h) than days off (7.4 ± 1.4 h). Further, night shift sleep was significantly shorter than day-shift sleep (p < 0.01). Assessment of subjective fatigue ratings showed that the sleep associated with both days off and night shifts had a greater recovery value than sleep associated with day shifts (p < 0.01). While on-site, participants obtained only 6 h of sleep indicating that the absence of competing domestic, family and social activities did not convert to more sleep. Factors including shift start times and circadian influences appear to have been more important.  相似文献

Ratings of perceived discomfort (0 to 10 scale) have been used to estimate relative maximum holding times (%MHT), particularly for static tasks. A linear 1:10% ratio has been described, where a rating of 5 corresponds to 50%MHT. It is unknown whether this linear ratio is valid for dynamic tasks. Additionally, whether pain or exertion are the primary predictors of discomfort is not clear. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate both pain and exertion ratings during static (50% maximum; N = 42) and dynamic (75% maximum; N = 34) elbow flexion tasks until failure. Gender, self-reported physical activity, and peak torque were also assessed. Pain and exertion ratings reasonably matched the 1:10% ratio during the static task but not during the dynamic task. Exertion related more strongly to MHT than pain in both tasks. Neither gender nor activity level appeared to influence perceptual ratings, but peak torque explained approximately 20% of the variance in MHT.  相似文献

Grouped comparisons of sleep quality for new and personal bedding systems   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The purpose of this study was to compare sleep comfort and quality between personal and new bedding systems. A convenience sample (women, n=33; men, n=29) with no clinical history of disturbed sleep participated in the study. Subjects recorded back and shoulder pain, sleep quality, comfort, and efficiency for 28 days each in their personal beds (pre) and in new medium-firm bedding systems (post). Repeated measures ANOVAs revealed significant improvement between pre- and post-test means for all dependent variables. Furthermore, reduction of pain and stiffness and improvement of sleep comfort and quality became more prominent over time. No significant differences were found for the groupings of age, weight, height, or body mass index. It was found that for the cheapest category of beds, lower back pain was significantly (p<0.01) more prominent than for the medium and higher priced beds. Average bed age was 9.5yrs. It was concluded that new bedding systems can significantly improve selected sleep variables and that continuous sleep quality may be dependent on timely replacement of bedding systems.  相似文献

Misalignment in stereo images leads to 3D discomfort, but the visual tolerance for disparities varies with viewing environment and stimulus. The aim of the study was twofold: first, to assess if vertical disparity tolerance (VDT) could be a reliable indicator of 3D visual comfort under certain restrained condition when vertical disparity is induced; second, to be able to predict how viewing conditions can affect visual comfort using an analytical model. Two viewing condition parameters were considered: luminance and stimulus angular size. The study was carried out in two experiments involving 17 subjects. In Experiment 1, visual comfort and vertical disparity tolerance were measured by a series of psychophysical tests for different stimulus angular sizes and luminance. Based on a regression analysis of this data, a model was proposed to estimate VDT as a function of luminance and stimulus angular size. In Experiment 2, a validation test was carried out to assess the quality of the model. Results confirm that for given viewing conditions (luminance, angular size, induced vertical disparity), the visual comfort measured is in agreement with the one predicted (ρ = 1.0008, p = 0.0026). VDT is a recognized reliable indicator of visual comfort due to vertical disparity and the model can be used to predict visual comfort for given viewing conditions.  相似文献

For the purpose of developing an event-related potential (ERP) method to study the differences in the capacity for pain empathy between urban Internet-addicted left-behind children and urban left-behind children with no such addiction, thirty participants (14 years of age) were selected from two middle schools in Chongqing, China to participate in the ERP experiment carried out over ten successive days in normal status. The study used the experimental paradigm of pain empathy experiment by Jackson, and 2 × 2 two-factor mixed experimental design. The results showed that for the N1 component (autonomic processing), the effect of pain was induced in both the Internet-addicted group and non-addicted group; this supports that the two groups of participants did not have differences during autonomic processing. The interaction between Internet addiction, non-addiction and pain was significant (for P2 and N2), i.e., the effect of pain was not significant in the Internet-addicted group but was significant in the non-addicted group. This finding supports that Internet addiction influenced the cognitive processing of empathy for pain in the urban left-behind children; P2 and N2 might reflect the cognitive processing and assessment of empathy for pain. During the last 550–850 ms, a larger LPC was induced in the two groups of participants for both pain and non-pain related images. This finding suggests that Internet addiction did not influence the processing since LPC reflected the reasonable judgment of participants, based on common sense, during the last experimental period. The final conclusion from the study was that Internet addiction influenced the capacity for pain empathy among urban left-behind children; in particular, it affected cognitive processing and assessment.  相似文献

PurposeTo compare the diagnostic performances of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and multivariable logistic regression (LR) analyses for differentiating between malignant and benign lung nodules on computed tomography (CT) scans.MethodsThis study evaluated 135 malignant nodules and 65 benign nodules. For each nodule, morphologic features (size, margins, contour, internal characteristics) on CT images and the patient’s age, sex and history of bloody sputum were recorded. Based on 200 bootstrap samples generated from the initial dataset, 200 pairs of ANN and LR models were built and tested. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, Hosmer–Lemeshow statistic and overall accuracy rate were used for the performance comparison.ResultsANNs had a higher discriminative performance than LR models (area under the ROC curve: 0.955 ± 0.015 (mean ± standard error) and 0.929 ± 0.017, respectively, p < 0.05). The overall accuracy rate for ANNs (90.0 ± 2.0%) was greater than that for LR models (86.9 ± 1.6%, p < 0.05). The Hosmer–Lemeshow statistic for the ANNs was 8.76 ± 6.59 vs. 6.62 ± 4.03 (p > 0.05) for the LR models.ConclusionsWhen used to differentiate between malignant and benign lung nodules on CT scans based on both objective and subjective features, ANNs outperformed LR models in both discrimination and clinical usefulness, but did not outperform for the calibration.  相似文献

Relationship research and theory recognizes that individuals continue to monitor the availability of their romantic/sexual prospects whether or not they are already in a committed relationship. We use the term back burner to describe a desired potential or continuing romantic/sexual partner with whom one communicates, but to whom one is not exclusively committed. Although communication with back burners is not new, modern technology affords novel channels (e.g., social networking applications and text messaging) that individuals are using to connect with back burners. A survey study (N = 374) explored whether people used technology to communicate with back burners, as well as relationships between back burner contacts and investment model variables (Rusbult, 1980). Results indicated that back burner activity through electronic channels was common, men reported more back burners than women, and that number of back burners associated positively with quality of alternatives. For those in committed relationships, no relationships were observed between back burner activity and commitment to or investment in the relationship. Implications and limitations are discussed.  相似文献

Staphylococcus aureus sortase A is an attractive target of Gram-positive bacteria that plays a crucial role in anchoring of surface proteins to peptidoglycan present in bacterial cell wall. Inhibiting sortase A is an elementary and essential effort in preventing the pathogenesis. In this context, in silico virtual screening of in-house database was performed using ligand based pharmacophore model as a filter. The developed pharmacophore model AAHR 11 consists of two acceptors, one hydrophobic and one ring aromatic feature. Top ranked molecule KKR1 was docked into the active site of the target. After profound analysis, it was analyzed and optimized based on the observations from its binding pose orientation. Upgraded version of KKR1 was KKR2 and has improved docking score, binding interactions and best fit in the binding pocket. KKR1 along with KKR2 were further validated using 100 ns molecular dynamic studies. Both KKR1 and KKR2 contain Indole-thiazolidine moiety and were synthesized. The disk diffusion assay has good initial results (ZI of KKR1, KKR2 were 24, 38 mm at 10 μg/mL and ZI of Ampicillin was 22 at 10 μg/mL) and calculated MICs of the molecules (KKR1 5.56 ± 0.28 μg/mL, KKR2 1.32 ± 0.12 μg/mL, Ampicillin 8 ± 1.1 μg/mL) were in good agreement with standard drug Ampicillin. KKR1 has shown IC50 of 1.23 ± 0.14 μM whereas the optimized lead molecule KKR2 show IC50 of 0.008 ± 0.07 μM. Results from in silico were validated by in vitro studies and proved that indole-thiazolidine molecules would be useful for future development as lead molecules against S. aureus sortase A.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a novel hexagon-based mesh generation method which creates all-quadrilateral (all-quad) meshes with guaranteed angle bounds and feature preservation for arbitrary planar domains. Given any planar curves, an adaptive hexagon-tree structure is constructed by using the curvature of the boundaries and narrow regions. Then a buffer zone and a hexagonal core mesh are created by removing elements outside or around the boundary. To guarantee the mesh quality, boundary edges of the core mesh are adjusted to improve their formed angles facing the boundary, and two layers of quad elements are inserted in the buffer zone. For any curve with sharp features, a corresponding smooth curve is firstly constructed and meshed, and then another layer of elements is inserted to match the smooth curve with the original one. It is proved that for any planar smooth curve all the element angles are within [60° ? ε, 120° + ε] (ε ? 5°). We also prove that the scaled Jacobians defined by two edge vectors are in the range of [sin (60° ? ε),  sin 90°], or [0.82, 1.0]. The same angle range can be guaranteed for curves with sharp features, with the exception of small angles in the input curve. Furthermore, an approach is introduced to match the generated interior and exterior meshes with a relaxed angle range, [30°, 150°]. We have applied our algorithm to a set of complicated geometries, including the China map, the Lake Superior map, and a three-component air foil with sharp features. In addition, all the elements in the final mesh are grouped into five types, and most elements only need a few flops to construct the stiffness matrix for finite element analysis. This will significantly reduce the computational time and the required memory during the stiffness matrix construction.  相似文献

This study utilized an external logger system for onsite measurements of computer activities of two professional groups—twelve university administrators and twelve computer-aided design (CAD) draftsmen. Computer use of each participant was recorded for 10 consecutive days—an average of 7.9 ± 1.8 workdays and 7.8 ± 1.5 workdays for administrators and draftsmen, respectively. Quantitative parameters computed using recorded data were daily dynamic duration (DD) and static duration, daily keystrokes, mouse clicks, wheel scrolling counts, mouse movement and dragged distance, average typing and clicking rates, and average time holding down keys and mouse buttons. Significant group differences existed in the number of daily keystrokes (p < 0.0005) and mouse clicks (p < 0.0005), mouse distance moved (p < 0.0005), typing rate (p < 0.0001), daily mouse DD (p < 0.0001), and keyboard DD (p < 0.005). Both groups had significantly longer mouse DD than keyboard DD (p < 0.0001). Statistical analysis indicates that the duration of computer use for different computer tasks cannot be represented by a single formula with same set of quantitative parameters as those associated with mouse and keyboard activities. Results of this study demonstrate that computer exposure during different tasks cannot be estimated solely by computer use duration. Quantification of onsite computer activities is necessary when determining computer-associated risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Other significant findings are discussed.  相似文献

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease, caused by several species of Leishmania. Being an opportunistic lipid-scavenging pathogen, Leishmania relies extensively on lipid metabolism especially for host–pathogen interaction, utilizing host lipids for energy and virulence. The rational approach is to target lipid metabolism of the pathogen focusing lipid-catabolizing lipases. The LdLip3 lipase is considered as drug target as it is constitutively expressed in both promastigote and amastigote forms. Since the LdLip3 structure is not known, we modeled its three-dimensional structure to implement structure-based drug discovery approach. Similarity-based virtual screening was carried out to identify potential inhibitors utilizing NCI diversity set on ZINC database including natural products. Implementing computational and experimental approaches, four anti-leishmanial agents were discovered. The screened molecules ZINC01821375, ZINC04008765, ZINC06117316 and ZINC12653571 had anti-leishmanial activity with IC50 (% viable promastigotes vs. concentration) of 5.2 ± 1.8 μM, 13.1 ± 2.6 μM, 9.4 ± 2.6 μM and 17.3 ± 3.1 μM, respectively. The molecules showed negligible toxicity toward mouse macrophages. Based on the contact footprinting analysis, new molecules were designed with better predicted free energy of binding than discovered anti-leishmanial agents. Further validation for the therapeutic utility of discovered molecules can be carried out by the research community to combat leishmaniasis.  相似文献

In this paper, a quadtree-based mesh generation method is described to create guaranteed-quality, geometry-adapted all-quadrilateral (all-quad) meshes with feature preservation for arbitrary planar domains. Given point cloud, our method generates all-quad meshes with these points as vertices and all the angles are within [45°, 135°]. For given planar curves, quadtree-based spatial decomposition is governed by the curvature of the boundaries and narrow regions. 2-refinement templates are chosen for local mesh refinement without creating any hanging nodes. A buffer zone is created by removing elements around the boundary. To guarantee the mesh quality, the angles facing the boundary are improved via template implementation, and two buffer layers are inserted in the buffer zone. It is proved that all the elements of the final mesh are quads with angles between 45° ± ε and 135° ± ε (ε  5°) with the exception of badly shaped elements that may be required by the sharp angles in the input geometry. We also prove that the scaled Jacobians defined by two edge vectors are in the range of [sin(45° ? ε), sin90°], or [0.64, 1.0]. Furthermore, sharp features and narrow regions are detected and preserved automatically. Boundary layer meshes are generated by splitting elements of the second buffer layer. We have applied our algorithm to a set of complicated geometries, including the Lake Superior map and the air foil with multiple components.  相似文献

The development of a thermal switch based on arrays of liquid–metal micro-droplets is presented. Prototype thermal switches are assembled from a silicon substrate on which is deposited an array of 1600 30-μm liquid–metal micro-droplets. The liquid–metal micro-droplet array makes and breaks contact with a second bare silicon substrate. A gap between the two silicon substrates is filled with either air at 760 Torr, air at of 0.5 Torr or xenon at 760 Torr. Heat transfer and thermal resistance across the thermal switches are measured for “on” (make contact) and “off” (break contact) conditions using guard-heated calorimetry. The figure of merit for a thermal switch, the ratio of “off” state thermal resistance over “on” state thermal resistance, Roff/Ron, is 129 ± 43 for a xenon-filled thermal switch that opens 100 μm and 60 ± 17 for an 0.5 Torr air-filled thermal switch that opens 25 μm. These thermal resistance ratios are shown to be markedly higher than values of Roff/Ron for a thermal switch based on contact between polished silicon surfaces. Transient temperature measurements for the liquid–metal micro-droplet switches indicate thermal switching times of less than 100 ms. Switch lifetimes are found to exceed one-million cycles.  相似文献

Purpose. To develop an automated classifier based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to differentiate between normal and glaucomatous eyes from the quantitative assessment of summary data reports of the Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT) in Taiwan Chinese population.Methods. This observational non-interventional, cross-sectional, case–control study included one randomly selected eye from each of the 341 study participants (135 patients with glaucoma and 206 healthy controls). Measurements of glaucoma variables (retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and optic nerve head topography) were obtained by Stratus OCT. Decision making was performed in two stages: feature extraction using the orthogonal array and the selected variables were treated as the feeder to adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), which was trained with the back-propagation gradient descent method in combination with the least squares method. With the Stratus OCT parameters used as input, receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curves were generated by ANFIS to classify eyes as either glaucomatous or normal.Results. The mean deviation was −0.67 ± 0.62 dB in the normal group and −5.87 ± 6.48 dB in the glaucoma group (P < 0.0001). The inferior quadrant thickness was the best individual parameter for differentiating between normal and glaucomatous eyes (ROC area, 0.887). With ANFIS technique, the ROC area was increased to 0.925.Conclusions. With Stratus OCT parameters used as input, the results from ANFIS showed promise for discriminating between glaucomatous and normal eyes. ANFIS may be preferable since the output concludes the if–then rules and membership functions, which enhances the readability of the output.  相似文献

Cognitive decline is an early feature of neurodegenerative conditions. CogState has developed a game-like computerized test battery with demonstrated acceptability, validity, reliability, stability, efficiency and sensitivity to detecting cognitive decline in older people under supervised conditions. This study aimed to evaluate an internet-based version of this test when used remotely and self-administered in a cohort of healthy, community-dwelling older adults aged 55 and above over a 12 month period at 1–3 monthly intervals. Test usability and reliability was examined in terms of acceptability, stability and reliability. Of 150 participants (age: 63.6 ± 5.6, range 55–83 years), 143 (95%) successfully completed a valid baseline test. Of these, 67% completed 3 month and 43% 12 months of testing. Technical difficulties were reported by 9% of participants. For those participants who completed 12 months tests, all tasks showed moderate to high stability and test–retest reliability.This brief computerized test battery was shown to have high acceptability for baseline self-administered testing and moderate to high stability for repeated assessments over 12 months. Attrition was high between baseline and 3 months. These data suggest that this tool may be useful for high frequency monitoring of cognitive function over 6–12 months, and deserves further evaluation.  相似文献

This research investigated the influence of parent–adolescent communication quality, as perceived by the adolescents, on the relationship between adolescents’ Internet use and verbal aggression. Adolescents (N = 363, age range 10–16, MT1 = 12.84, SD = 1.93) were examined twice with a six-month delay. Controlling for social support in general terms, moderated regression analyses showed that Internet-related communication quality with parents determined whether Internet use is associated with an increase or a decrease in adolescents’ verbal aggression scores over time. A three way interaction indicated that high Internet-related communication quality with peers can have disadvantageous effects if the communication quality with parents is low. Implications on resources and risk factors related to the effects of Internet use are discussed.  相似文献

In manufacturing industries, it is well known that process variation is a major source of poor quality products. As such, monitoring and diagnosis of variation is essential towards continuous quality improvement. This becomes more challenging when involving two correlated variables (bivariate), whereby selection of statistical process control (SPC) scheme becomes more critical. Nevertheless, the existing traditional SPC schemes for bivariate quality control (BQC) were mainly designed for rapid detection of unnatural variation with limited capability in avoiding false alarm, that is, imbalanced monitoring performance. Another issue is the difficulty in identifying the source of unnatural variation, that is, lack of diagnosis, especially when dealing with small shifts. In this research, a scheme to address balanced monitoring and accurate diagnosis was investigated. Design consideration involved extensive simulation experiments to select input representation based on raw data and statistical features, artificial neural network recognizer design based on synergistic model, and monitoring–diagnosis approach based on two-stage technique. The study focused on bivariate process for cross correlation function, ρ = 0.1–0.9 and mean shifts, μ = ±0.75–3.00 standard deviations. The proposed two-stage intelligent monitoring scheme (2S-IMS) gave superior performance, namely, average run length, ARL1 = 3.18–16.75 (for out-of-control process), ARL0 = 335.01–543.93 (for in-control process) and recognition accuracy, RA = 89.5–98.5%. This scheme was validated in manufacturing of audio video device component. This research has provided a new perspective in realizing balanced monitoring and accurate diagnosis in BQC.  相似文献

This study seeks to promote learning in computer-based learning environments utilizing students’ self-directed metacognitive prompts. Such prompts are based on the idea of instructing students to design their own metacognitive scaffolds and learn with them afterward. In a pre-post experimental design, students in the experimental group (n = 35) were instructed to configure their own metacognitive prompts before learning whereas students in the control group (n = 35) learned without prompts. Log file analysis of navigation behavior indicates that students who learned with their individually designed, self-directed prompts visited relevant webpages significantly more often and spent a longer time on them compared with students in the control group. Moreover, participants in the experimental group attained better transfer performance immediately after learning. The long-term effect in transfer performance was even greater in a follow-up learning session conducted after three weeks without any instructional support in either group. These results are consistent with theories of metacognition and self-regulated learning and indicate that self-directed prompts can lead to sustainable effects.  相似文献
