Previous research on developing parallel triangulation algorithms concentrated on triangulating planar point sets.O(log3 n) running time algorithms usingO(n) processors have been developed in Refs. 1 and 2. Atallah and Goodrich(3) presented a data structure that can be viewed as a parallel analogue of the sequential plane-sweeping paradigm, which can be used to triangulate a planar point set inO(logn loglogn) time usingO(n) processors. Recently Merks(4) described an algorithm for triangulating point sets which runs inO(logn) time usingO(n) processors, and is thus optimal. In this paper we develop a parallel algorithm for triangulating simplicial point sets in arbitrary dimensions based on the idea of the sequential algorithm presented in Ref. 5. The algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time usingO(n/logn) processors. The algorithm hasO(n logn) as the product of the running time and the number of processors; i.e., an optimal speed-up.  相似文献

We give the first efficient parallel algorithms for solving the arrangement problem. We give a deterministic algorithm for the CREW PRAM which runs in nearly optimal bounds ofO (logn log* n) time andn 2/logn processors. We generalize this to obtain anO (logn log* n)-time algorithm usingn d /logn processors for solving the problem ind dimensions. We also give a randomized algorithm for the EREW PRAM that constructs an arrangement ofn lines on-line, in which each insertion is done in optimalO (logn) time usingn/logn processors. Our algorithms develop new parallel data structures and new methods for traversing an arrangement. This work was supported by the National Science Foundation, under Grants CCR-8657562 and CCR-8858799, NSF/DARPA under Grant CCR-8907960, and Digital Equipment Corporation. The main results of this paper are efficient parallel algorithms, MSP and LOCATE, for computing minimal spanning trees and locating minimal paths in directed graphs, respectively. Algorithm MSP has time complexityO(log3 n) usingO(n 3/logn) processors, while LOCATE has time complexityO(logn) usingO(n 2) processors. Algorithm MSP is derived from sequential algorithms, when the unbounded parallelism model is used.  相似文献

By restricting weight functions to satisfy the quadrangle inequality or the inverse quadrangle inequality, significant progress has been made in developing efficient sequential algorithms for the least-weight subsequence problem [10], [9], [12], [16]. However, not much is known on the improvement of the naive parallel algorithm for the problem, which is fast but demands too many processors (i.e., it takesO(log2 n) time on a CREW PRAM with n3/logn processors). In this paper we show that if the weight function satisfies the inverse quadrangle inequality, the problem can be solved on a CREW PRAM in O(log2 n log logn) time withn/log logn processors, or in O(log2 n) time withn logn processors. Notice that the processor-time complexity of our algorithm is much closer to the almost linear-time complexity of the best-known sequential algorithm [12].  相似文献

Given ann-vertex simple polygon we address the following problems: (i) find the shortest path between two pointss andd insideP, and (ii) compute the shortestpath tree between a single points and each vertex ofP (which implicitly represents all the shortest paths). We show how to solve the first problem inO(logn) time usingO(n) processors, and the more general second problem inO(log2 n) time usingO(n) processors, and the more general second problem inO(log2 n) time usingO(n) processors for any simple polygonP. We assume the CREW RAM shared memory model of computation in which concurrent reads are allowed, but no two processors should attempt to simultaneously write in the same memory location. The algorithms are based on the divide-and-conquer paradigm and are quite different from the known sequential algorithmsResearch supported by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (McGill University) grant 276-07  相似文献

We give anO(log4 n)-timeO(n 2)-processor CRCW PRAM algorithm to find a hamiltonian cycle in a strong semicomplete bipartite digraph,B, provided that a factor ofB (i.e., a collection of vertex disjoint cycles covering the vertex set ofB) is computed in a preprocessing step. The factor is found (if it exists) using a bipartite matching algorithm, hence placing the whole algorithm in the class Random-NC. We show that any parallel algorithm which can check the existence of a hamiltonian cycle in a strong semicomplete bipartite digraph in timeO(r(n)) usingp(n) processors can be used to check the existence of a perfect matching in a bipartite graph in timeO(r(n)+n 2 /p(n)) usingp(n) processors. Hence, our problem belongs to the class NC if and only if perfect matching in bipartite graphs belongs to NC. We also consider the problem of finding a hamiltonian path in a semicomplete bipartite digraph.  相似文献

A cycleC passing through two specific verticess andt of a biconnected graph is said to be anst-ambitus if its bridges do not interlace in some special way. We present algorithms forst-ambitus for planar biconnected graphs, which are much simpler than the one known for general graphs [MT]. Our algorithm runs inO(n) time on a sequential machine and (logn) parallel time usingO(n/logn) processors on an EREW PRAM.  相似文献

The problem of finding a sublogarithmic time optimal parallel algorithm for 3 -colouring rooted forests has been open for long. We settle this problem by obtaining an O(( log log n) log * ( log * n)) time optimal parallel algorithm on a TOLERANT Concurrent Read Concurrent Write (CRCW) Parallel Random Access Machine (PRAM). Furthermore, we show that if f(n) is the running time of the best known algorithm for 3 -colouring a rooted forest on a COMMON or TOLERANT CRCW PRAM, a fractional independent set of the rooted forest can be found in O(f(n)) time with the same number of processors, on the same model. Using these results, it is shown that decomposable top-down algebraic computation and, hence, depth computation (ranking), 2 -colouring and prefix summation on rooted forests can be done in O( log n) optimal time on a TOLERANT CRCW PRAM. These algorithms have been obtained by proving a result of independent interest, one concerning the self-simulation property of TOLERANT: an N -processor TOLERANT CRCW PRAM that uses an address space of size O(N) only, can be simulated on an n -processor TOLERANT PRAM in O(N/n) time, with no asymptotic increase in space or cost, when n=O(N/ log log N) . Given a set of n intervals representing an interval graph, the problem of finding a maximum matching between pairs of disjoint (nonintersecting) intervals has been considered in the sequential model. In this paper we present parallel algorithms for computing maximum cardinality matchings among pairs of disjoint intervals in interval graphs in the EREW PRAM and hypercube models. For the general case of the problem, our algorithms compute a maximum matching in O( log 3 n) time using O(n/ log 2 n) processors on the EREW PRAM and using n processors on the hypercubes. For the case of proper interval graphs, our algorithm runs in O( log n ) time using O(n) processors if the input intervals are not given already sorted and using O(n/ log n ) processors otherwise, on the EREW PRAM. On n -processor hypercubes, our algorithm for the proper interval case takes O( log n log log n ) time for unsorted input and O( log n ) time for sorted input. Our parallel results also lead to optimal sequential algorithms for computing maximum matchings among disjoint intervals. In addition, we present an improved parallel algorithm for maximum matching between overlapping intervals in proper interval graphs. Received November 20, 1995; revised September 3, 1998.  相似文献

We consider the problem of generating random permutations with uniform distribution. That is, we require that for an arbitrary permutation π of n elements, with probability 1/n! the machine halts with the i th output cell containing π(i) , for 1 ≤ i ≤ n . We study this problem on two models of parallel computations: the CREW PRAM and the EREW PRAM. The main result of the paper is an algorithm for generating random permutations that runs in O(log log n) time and uses O(n 1+o(1) ) processors on the CREW PRAM. This is the first o(log n) -time CREW PRAM algorithm for this problem. On the EREW PRAM we present a simple algorithm that generates a random permutation in time O(log n) using n processors and O(n) space. This algorithm outperforms each of the previously known algorithms for the exclusive write PRAMs. The common and novel feature of both our algorithms is first to design a suitable random switching network generating a permutation and then to simulate this network on the PRAM model in a fast way. A parallel algorithm to generate the dominance graph on a collection of nonoverlapping iso-oriented rectangles is presented. This graph arises from the constraint graph commonly used in compaction algorithms for VLSI circuits. The dominance graph expresses the notion of aboveness on a collection of nonoverlapping rectangles: it is the directed graph which contains an edge from a rectangleb to rectanglec iffc is immediately aboveb. The algorithm is based on the divide and conquer paradigm; in the EREW PRAM model, it has time complexityO(log2 n), usingn/logn processors. Its processor-time product isO(nlogn), which is optimal.  相似文献

This paper presents an optimal parallel algorithm for triangulating an arbitrary set ofn points in the plane. The algorithm runs inO(logn) time usingO(n) space andO(n) processors on a Concurrent-Read, Exclusive-Write Parallel RAM model (CREW PRAM). The parallel lower bound on triangulation is (logn) time so the best possible linear speedup has been achieved. A parallel divide-and-conquer technique of subdividing a problem into subproblems is employed.  相似文献

Thedistance transform(DT) is an image computation tool which can be used to extract the information about the shape and the position of the foreground pixels relative to each other. It converts a binary image into a grey-level image, where each pixel has a value corresponding to the distance to the nearest foreground pixel. The time complexity for computing the distance transform is fully dependent on the different distance metrics. Especially, the more exact the distance transform is, the worse execution time reached will be. Nowadays, quite often thousands of images are processed in a limited time. It seems quite impossible for a sequential computer to do such a computation for the distance transform in real time. In order to provide efficient distance transform computation, it is considerably desirable to develop a parallel algorithm for this operation. In this paper, based on the diagonal propagation approach, we first provide anO(N2) time sequential algorithm to compute thechessboard distance transform(CDT) of anN×Nimage, which is a DT using the chessboard distance metrics. Based on the proposed sequential algorithm, the CDT of a 2D binary image array of sizeN×Ncan be computed inO(logN) time on the EREW PRAM model usingO(N2/logN) processors,O(log logN) time on the CRCW PRAM model usingO(N2/log logN) processors, andO(logN) time on the hypercube computer usingO(N2/logN) processors. Following the mapping as proposed by Lee and Horng, the algorithm for the medial axis transform is also efficiently derived. The medial axis transform of a 2D binary image array of sizeN×Ncan be computed inO(logN) time on the EREW PRAM model usingO(N2/logN) processors,O(log logN) time on the CRCW PRAM model usingO(N2/log logN) processors, andO(logN) time on the hypercube computer usingO(N2/logN) processors. The proposed parallel algorithms are composed of a set of prefix operations. In each prefix operation phase, only increase (add-one) operation and minimum operation are employed. So, the algorithms are especially efficient in practical applications.  相似文献

We present an efficient parallel algorithm for constructing rectangular duals of plane triangular graphs. This problem finds applications in VLSI design and floor-planning problems. No NC algorithm for solving this problem was previously known. A new, parallel approach for generating Bresenham-type lines is developed. Coordinate pairs which approximate straight lines on a square grid are derived from line equations. These pairs serve as a basis for the development of four new parallel algorithms. One of the algorithms uses the fact that straight time generation is equivalent to a vector prefix sums calculation. The algorithms execute on a binary tree of processors. Each node in the tree performs a simple calculation that involves only additions and shifts. All four algorithms have time complexityO(log2 n) wheren in the form 2 m denotes the number of points generated andn-1 is the number of processors in the tree. This compares toO(n) for Bresenham's algorithm executed on a sequential processor. Pipelining can be used to achieve a constant time per line generation as long as line length is less thann.  相似文献

A new scheme for the deterministic simulation of PRAMs in VLSI   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A deterministic scheme for the simulation of (n, m)-PRAM computation is devised. Each PRAM step is simulated on a bounded degree network consisting of a mesh-of-trees (MT) of siden. The memory is subdivided inn modules, each local to a PRAM processor. The roots of the MT contain these processors and the memory modules, while the otherO(n 2) nodes have the mere capabilities of packet switchers and one-bit comparators. The simulation algorithm makes a crucial use of pipelining on the MT, and attains a time complexity ofO(log2 n/log logn). The best previous time bound wasO(log2 n) on a different interconnection network withn processors. While the previous simulation schemes use an intermediate MPC model, which is in turn simulated on a bounded degree network, our method performs the simulation directly with a simple algorithm. This work has been supported in part by Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione of Italy under a research grant.  相似文献

Parallel algorithms for the problems of selection and searching on sorted matrices are formulated. The selection algorithm takesO(lognlog lognlog*n) time withO(n/lognlog*n) processors on an EREW PRAM. This algorithm can be generalized to solve the selection problem on a set of sorted matrices. The searching algorithm takesO(log logn) time withO(n/log logn) processors on a Common CRCW PRAM, which is optimal. We show that no algorithm using at mostnlogcnprocessors,c≥ 1, can solve the matrix search problem in time faster than Ω(log logn) and that Ω(logn) steps are needed to solve this problem on any model that does not allow concurrent writes.  相似文献
