Abstract— Field‐sequential‐color technology eliminates the need for color filters in liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs) and results in significant power savings and higher resolution. But the LCD suffers from color breakup, which degrades image quality and limits practical applications. By controlling the backlight temporally and spatially, a so‐called local‐primary‐desaturation (LPD) backlight scheme was developed and implemented in a 180‐Hz optically compensated bend (OCB) mode LCD equipped with a backlight consisting of a matrix of light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). It restores image quality by suppressing color breakup and saves power because it has no color filter and uses local dimming. A perceptual experiment was implemented for verification, and the results showed that a field‐sequential‐color display with a local‐primary‐desaturation backlight reduced the color breakup from very annoying to not annoying and even invisible.  相似文献

Abstract— Thin‐film‐transistor liquid‐crystal displays (TFT‐LCDs) have the largest market share of all digital flat‐panel displays. An LCD backlighting system employing a three‐color red‐green‐blue light‐emitting diode (RGB‐LED) array is very attractive, considering its wide color gamut, tunable white point, high dimming ratio, long lifetime, and environmental compatibility. But the high‐intensity LED has problems with thermal stability and degradation of brightness over time. Color and white luminance levels are not stable over a wide range of temperature due to inherent long‐term aging characteristics. In order to minimize color point and brightness differences over time, optical feedback control is the key technology for any LED‐backlight system. In this paper, the feasibility of an optical color‐sensing feedback system for an LED backlight by integrating the amorphous‐silicon (a‐Si) color sensor onto the LCD panel will be presented. To minimize the photoconductivity degradation of a‐Si, a new laser exposure treatment has been applied. The integrated color‐sensor optical‐feedback‐controlled LED‐backlight system minimized the color variation to less than 0.008 Δu'v' (CIE1976) compared to 0.025 for an open‐loop system over the temperature range of 42–76°C.  相似文献

A new technology which enables a local brightness control according to the displayed images has been expected in the thin and lightweight backlight systems to improve a contrast ratio and power consumption of the liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In this paper, we have proposed a novel local‐dimming backlight system using alignment‐controlled polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals as a light‐guiding plate and investigated the forming conditions of polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals to achieve both a high‐luminance ratio and a fast response speed. As a result, we found that a luminance ratio and response speed of the backlight system can be improved by using bifunctional LC monomer materials and forming fine and rigid polymer network in the LCs, and achieved high luminance ratio of 16:1 and fast response time less than 0.5 ms. In addition, we fabricated the twisted nematic‐mode LCD using the local dimming light‐guiding plate‐type backlight based on this design, and successfully realized eight times higher contrast ratio than that of the traditional twisted nematic‐mode LCD.  相似文献

Abstract— A spatially and temporally scanning backlight consisting of ten isolated micro‐structured light guides has been developed to be combined with a fast‐response optically‐compensated‐bend‐mode field‐sequential‐color LCD in which the liquid‐crystal cell does not contain color filters. The sequential fields of three primary colors are generated by illumination of the red‐, green‐, and blue‐light‐emitting diodes, each illuminating for one‐half of the field, resulting in a luminance of 200 cd/m2 for the LCD. The effect of light leakage between the blocks in the scanning backlight in field‐sequential‐color applications was measured and will be described.  相似文献

Abstract— It is expected that 3‐D will be the next step in the enhanced viewing experience. At present, there are two competing 3‐D technologies for glasses‐based consumer TVs: active shutter glasses and passive polarized glasses. With the ongoing reduction in response time of liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs), this article will focus on shutter‐glass‐based stereoscopic LCDs. In this paper, the properties of such a display system is described and it is demonstrated that by adding a line‐scanning backlight, the cross‐talk can be reduced to less than 1.4%, allowing for excellent 3‐D portrayal. For images of extreme contrast, this is perceivable, but not judged annoying by a panel of expert viewers. Which characteristics of the display and shutter glasses that should be optimized to create an inexpensive, cross‐talk‐free, 3‐D LCD are discussed.  相似文献

Plastic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) termed sheet LCDs with transparent polyimide (PI) substrates were constructed. There is a lot of potential to expand the use of these LCDs in LCD applications. Herein, we investigated a structure for sheet LCDs such as high‐density main post spacers (PSs) and PI substrates with the aid of a barrier layer to control the residual stress and protect the liquid crystal from moisture. Drawing on this, we propose an ultra‐narrow border LCD that makes of the developed sheet LCDs. The most significant improvement is that the four borders of the LCD can be folded to wrap the backlight unit. This LCD was based on various new techniques, including the use of plastic substrates, processing of polarizer films, control of the neutral surface of a bending component based on the sealant width, and the use of a cover glass with a lens effect. We believe that these novel LCDs will be useful in numerous new applications.  相似文献

Abstract— This article addresses spontaneously polarized light emission from GaN‐based light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) fabricated on electrically non‐polar crystallographic orientations and application of spontaneously polarized emission for backlighting of liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs). The first half of the article describes polarized light emission from GaN‐based LEDs and its role in solid‐state lighting technology. The second half reports on our experimental work to explore the potential of non‐polar LEDs for LCD backlighting applications. Optical transmission of non‐polar LED emission was characterized through a liquid‐crystal layer. Extinction ratios of 0.21 were measured between zero and an applied bias voltage to the liquid‐crystal cells. These extinction ratios are not particularly high yet; nevertheless, the experiment has demonstrated the potential of such non‐polar LEDs for LCD backlighting.  相似文献

Abstract— A high‐performance reflective polarization converter which could be used in a backlight recycling system for liquid‐crystal‐display (LCD) devices is proposed. The device consists of a twisted‐nematic (TN) liquid‐crystal film, a uniaxial A‐plate, and a reflector. The configuration parameters, such as thickness and orientation of the films, are optimized using a genetic algorithm. As a result, the design can convert light from TM to TE polarization (or TE to TM) at a maximum 99.7%, minimum 91.3%, and average 96.7% conversion efficiency for the entire visible spectrum and incident angle from 0 to 60°. Such a broadband reflective polarization converter is particularly useful for enhancing the light efficiency and reducing the power consumption of LCDs.  相似文献

Abstract— Field‐sequential color (FSC) is a potential technique for low‐power liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs). However, it still experiences a serious visual artifact, color break‐up (CBU), which degrades image quality. Consequently, the “Stencil Field‐Sequential‐Color (Stencil‐FSC)” method, which applies local color‐backlight‐dimming technology at a 240‐Hz field rate to FSC‐LCDs, is proposed. Using the Stencil‐FSC method not only suppressed CBU efficiently but also enhanced the image contrast ratio by using low average power consumption. After backlight signal optimization, the Stencil‐FSC method was demonstrated on a 32‐in. FSC‐LCD and effectively suppressed the CBU, which resulted in more than a 27,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and less than 40‐W average power consumption.  相似文献

Abstract— Liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs) have become increasingly popular due to their lower price and larger sizes. In particular, backlights having an RGB LED source have recently attracted attention, because they have a wider color gamut, higher luminance, and lower power consumption. However, even when the backlight area is uniformly covered with light modules based on arrays of individual LEDs, this does not ensure a uniform chromaticity and luminance over the backlight panel, thereby stressing the need for lighting simulation of the backlight. Accordingly, this paper proposes an effective lighting simulator to predict the chromaticity and luminance distribution of an LED backlight panel for an LCD. First, the spectrum‐based photons are all initially generated using a random function with a constraint satisfying the spectral power distribution of the actual LED light sources, while their emitting directions are determined based on a pre‐calculated probability using a random variable angle. The optical characteristics of the inner sheets in the LCD backlight structure are then modeled using the wavelength and incident angle to predict the next direction of each photon based on the reflection and transmittance at an intersection. All the photons that reach the unit area of the outward panel are gathered to shape their spectral power distribution, then converted to CIEXYZ values and multiplied with a color‐matching function. Finally, a realistic image visualization of these CIEXYZ values is achieved through standardized device characterization using the sRGB mode. Experiments confirm that the proposed spectrum‐based photon mapping can effectively predict the chromaticity and luminance distribution of an LED backlight panel, providing a good lighting simulation of an LED backlight before manufacturing the LCD.  相似文献

Abstract— A novel illumination system for a liquid‐crystal‐display (LCD) module used in a dual‐display cellular phone has been developed. A double‐surface light‐emitting backlight uses a single light‐guide plate to illuminate both LCDs. A single lightguide, two prism sheets, and four light‐emitting diodes (LED) were used in the new structure, compared with ten components and two sets of light sources with six LEDs in the current backlight. The thickness and power consumption of the new backlight were reduced by a factor of 0.59 and 0.67, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract— A thin‐crystalline‐film (TCF) polarizer has been developed which can be used internally in liquid‐crystal‐display cells. Based on this material, a manufacturing process has been developed for the fabrication of monochrome LCDs with internal polarizers. A new TCF polarizer material and coating equipment, developed to realize a high‐performance color TFT‐LCD, are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— Two configurations, (i) a double‐cell‐gap twisted nematic (DTN) liquid‐crystal display (LCD) and (ii) a single‐cell‐gap twisted‐nematic (TN) liquid‐crystal display (LCD) using a twisted LC retarder, were optimized for transflective liquid‐crystal displays. For the DTN configuration, both the single‐cell‐gap approach and the double‐cell‐gap approach were considered. The optimized configurations exhibit a high contrast ratio, wide viewing angles, and achromatic (black/white) switching in both the transmissive and reflective modes. They are easy to fabricate and also possess a perfect dark state. Both are suitable for high‐quality transflective TFT‐LCDs.  相似文献

Abstract— Two types of low‐temperature poly‐Si TFT LCDs, which integrate a multi‐bit memory circuit and a liquid‐crystal driver within a pixel, have been developed using two different TFT process technologies. Both a 1.3‐in. 116‐ppi LCD having a 2‐bit pixel memory and a 1.5‐in. 130‐ppi LCD having a 5‐bit pixel memory consume very little power, less than 100 μW, which indicates that this technology is promising for mobile displays.  相似文献

Abstract— Liquid‐crystal (LC) photoalignment using azo dyes is described. It will be shown that this photoaligning method can provide a highly uniform alignment with a controllable pretilt angle and strong anchoring energy of the LC cell, as well as a high thermal and UV stability. The application of LC photoalignment to the fabrication of various types of liquid‐crystal displays, such as VAN‐LCDs, FLCDs, TN‐LCDs, and microdisplays, on glass and plastic substrates is also discussed. Azo‐dye photoaligned super‐thin polarizers and phase retarders are considered as new optical elements in LCD production, in particular for transflective displays.  相似文献

Abstract— Small‐form‐factor liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs) are mainly used in mobile applications (e.g., mobile phones, PDAs, and portable game consoles) but also in digital still cameras, video cameras, automotive applications, etc. Like all active‐matrix LCDs, mobile displays suffer from motion blur caused by the sample‐and‐hold effect. One option for improving the motion portrayal on active‐matrix LCDs is the use of a scanning backlight, which results in an imaging behavior similar to the one present in impulsive displays. In this paper, the realization of a scanning backlight for mobile displays is reported. This employs a backlight with seven individually lit segments for reducing the motion blur. Results of perception experiments performed with two identical displays confirm the benefit of using this technology. Optimal driving conditions result in a major improvement in motion portrayal on mobile LCDs.  相似文献

Novel liquid‐crystal (LC) mixtures featuring high optical anisotropy Δn) and small rotational viscosity (γ1) were developed for field‐sequential‐color TN‐LCD applications. The dynamic behavior of the TN cells in a narrow‐gap range was studied and new tolane LC substances were introduced. The newly developed LC mixtures, having a narrow‐gap cell, enable a TN‐LCD to switch fast enough to be applied to field‐sequential‐color displays not only at a room temperature but also at low temperatures. It was also confirmed that the voltage‐holding ratio (VHR) is sufficiently high in field‐sequential addressing conditions and, therefore, the LC mixtures can be used in active‐matrix LCDs. For practical use, a storage test of the TN cells under light irradiation was performed to evaluate their voltage‐holding property. It was also confirmed that their high VHR can be maintained for over 10,000 hours under practical conditions.  相似文献

Nowadays, thin‐film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT‐LCDs) have realized high reliability of display characteristics by improving liquid crystal (LC) materials and cell fabrication processes. In order to improve display reliability, measurement methodologies are important to see the progress of improvement of materials and processes; thus, our group has proposed voltage holding ratio (VHR), ion impurity, residual direct current (DC) and elastic constants for LC cells, and the optical anisotropy of an alignment layer on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate for LCD industry. In case of an ion impurity, we have succeeded in measuring the ion impurity amount in TFT‐LCD. Furthermore, we have recently proposed ion impurity measurement methodology for beyond LCD applications that are organic light emitting diode (OLED) and organic photovoltaics (OPV). In this review, I introduce each measurement methodology for LCDs and beyond LCDs in detail.  相似文献

We have developed a new microstructure film for wide viewing liquid crystal displays (LCDs). By attaching it to the surface of a conventional LCD, the viewing angle characteristics of LCD has drastically improved without causing a blur of the frontal image and a decrease in the contrast ratio under bright ambient light conditions. This film can be applied to various LC modes including twisted nematic and multidomain vertical alignment by changing its internal micrometer‐size 3D structure. Further, this film can be mass‐produced efficiently by self alignment roll‐to‐roll process.  相似文献

We examined the use of quantum rods (QRs) in two configurations for display applications, including the backlight and emissive color pixels for liquid crystal and organic light‐emitting diode displays, respectively. For the backlight, we used an electrospun nanofiber sheet embedded with QRs, and found the nanofiber‐aligned sheet showed polarized emission with a very high outcoupling efficiency. We then fabricated emissive color pixels with QRs using an inkjet printer, and evaluated their optical properties. The color gamut area size was 82% of the BT2020 standard and the overlap with it was 69%.  相似文献
