Curricula in Schools of Architecture: A Directory

The compiler of this curricular directory of schools of architecture outside the United States was Chairman of the ACSA Committee on Relations with Foreign Schools of Architecture in 1961–63. The data was obtained by him in Europe in 1958 and supplemented by data in charts prepared by Professors Muschenheim and Gardner-Medwin in 1962. Professor Muschenheim was assisted in the compilation by Professor Edward Olencki, also of the University of Michigan.

Upper Midwest Regional Conference of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture

This paper examines some of the circumstances and the ways in which the instrumentality of vision has come to dominate our discourse since the Renaissance. Furthermore, it addresses our recent attempts at subjecting architecture to post-structuralist and textual theories only possible in the domain of pure ideality as the result of which the architectural object is read independently of its worldly situation. My intention however, is not only to advocate the experiential aspects of architecture but to argue that the world itself remains always implicated in our discourse. In other words, our readings cannot be abstracted from the world anymore than our experiences can be.

Minutes of the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture

Alberto Pérez-Gómez's 1983 Architecture and the Crisis of Modern Science is used here as a vehicle for exploring the behavior of disciplinary boundaries in the context of crisis both historically and theoretically. Responding to his contemporaneous architectural crisis of the 1970s instigated by the rise of positivism, Pérez-Gómez uses Alexandre Koyré's history of the scientific revolution as a mirror to reflect the historical developments of architectural theory upon it. Although effectively circumscribed, his deliberate exposure to an interdisciplinary history nonetheless contributes to the opening up of a much richer constellation of perspectives that illuminate the nature of the disciplinary crisis he was trying to negotiate. These in turn open up new lines of interdisciplinary inquiry for the present condition and the new wave of positivism that haunts contemporary theories of parametricism in a novel moment of crisis.

In his identification of national characteristics, he recognises the part that a consolidated approach to Modernism has played. Looking backwards as well as forwards, Modernism in Italy, in all its manifestations, has been simultaneously concerned with ‘the exaltation of the new’ and ‘the obsession with memory’. Diffusive Thermal Architecture: New Work from the Hylozoic Series

Could the use of high-resolution image equipment and the thermodynamic patterns that they produce have a significant application in architectural design? Architect Philip Beesley , a professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Canada, describes the explorations revealed by the Hylozoic Series, a collaborative series of immersive architectural environments directed by a team from the university. He explains how the subtle effects of the works are achieved by integrating active filters into canopies and screens that create immersive, forest-like installations.

Italian Architecture from the Outside In

Hans Ibelings, the Dutch editor of A10: new European architecture, provides a reticent but entirely perceptive account of the Italian architecture scene from a wider European perspective. Architectural culture in Italy may be nascent in comparison to some of its continental neighbours, but it is ‘richer and more versatile’ than it has been for many years. 2012中国风景园林教育大会暨风景园林院系负责人联席会议在东南大学召开

2012年5月18—19日,由中国风景园林学会、高等学校风景园林学科专业指导小组主办,东南大学承办的"2012年中国风景园林教育大会暨风景园林院系负责人联席会议"在东南大学召开,会议主题为"一级学科背景下的风景园林教育研究与实践"。来自全国建筑、农林等系统的近百所高校的风景园林院系教师、杂志媒体等共400余位代表参加了会议。此次会议为风景园林学科升格为一级学科之后第一次正式和完整的教育大会,对中国风景园林学科发展意义深远。
