This paper introduces a mobility tracking mechanism that combines a movement-based location update policy with a selective paging scheme. Movement-based location update is selected for its simplicity. It does not require each mobile terminal to store information about the arrangement and the distance relationship of all cells. In fact, each mobile terminal only keeps a counter of the number of cells visited. A location update is performed when this counter exceeds a predefined threshold value. This scheme allows the dynamic selection of the movement threshold on a per-user basis. This is desirable as different users may have very different mobility patterns. Selective paging reduces the cost for locating a mobile terminal in the expense of an increase in the paging delay. We propose a selective paging scheme which significantly decreases the location tracking cost under a small increase in the allowable paging delay. We introduce an analytical model for the proposed location tracking mechanism which captures the mobility and the incoming call arrival patterns of each mobile terminal. Analytical results are provided to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of the proposed scheme under various parameters  相似文献

In personal communications applications, users communicate via wireless with a wireline network. The wireline network tracks the current location of the user, and can therefore route messages to a user regardless of the user's location. In addition to its impact on signaling within the wireline network, mobility tracking requires the expenditure of wireless resources as well, including the power consumption of the portable units carried by the users and the radio bandwidth used for registration and paging. Ideally, the mobility tracking scheme used for each user should depend on the user's call and mobility pattern, so the standard approach, in which all cells in a registration area are paged when a call arrives, may be wasteful of wireless resources. In order to conserve these resources, the network must have the capability to page selectively within a registration area, and the user must announce his or her location more frequently. We propose and analyze a simple model that captures this additional flexibility. Dynamic programming is used to determine an optimal announcing strategy for each user. Numerical results for a simple one-dimensional mobility model show that the optimal scheme may provide significant savings when compared to the standard approach even when the latter is optimized by suitably choosing the registration area size on a per-user basis. Ongoing research includes computing numerical results for more complicated mobility models and determining how existing system designs might be modified to incorporate our approach  相似文献

The next-generation mobile network will support terminal mobility, personal mobility, and service provider portability, making global roaming seamless. A location-independent personal telecommunication number (PTN) scheme is conducive to implementing such a global mobile system. However, the nongeographic PTNs coupled with the anticipated large number of mobile users in future mobile networks may introduce very large centralized databases. This necessitates research into the design and performance of high-throughput database technologies used in mobile systems to ensure that future systems will be able to carry efficiently the anticipated loads. This paper proposes a scalable, robust, efficient location database architecture based on the location-independent PTNs. The proposed multitree database architecture consists of a number of database subsystems, each of which is a three-level tree structure and is connected to the others only through its root. By exploiting the localized nature of calling and mobility patterns, the proposed architecture effectively reduces the database loads as well as the signaling traffic incurred by the location registration and call delivery procedures. In addition, two memory-resident database indices, memory-resident direct file and T-tree, are proposed for the location databases to further improve their throughput. Analysis model and numerical results are presented to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed database architecture. Results have revealed that the proposed database architecture for location management can effectively support the anticipated high user density in the future mobile networks.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an extension to the personal communication services (PCS) location management protocol which uses dynamically overlapped registration areas. The scheme is based on monitoring the aggregate mobility and call pattern of the users during each reconfiguration period and adapting to the mobility and call patterns by either expanding or shrinking registration areas at the end of each reconfiguration period. We analytically characterize the trade-off resulting from the inclusion or exclusion of a cell in a registration area in terms of expected change in aggregate database access cost and signaling overhead. This characterization is used to guide the registration area adaption in a manner in which the signaling and database access load on any given location register (LR) does not exceed a specified limit. Our simulation results show that it is useful to dynamically adapt the registration areas to the aggregate mobility and call patterns of the mobile units when the mobility pattern exhibits locality. For such mobility and call patterns, the proposed scheme can greatly reduce the average signaling and database access load on LRs. Further, the cost of adapting the registration areas is shown to be low in terms of memory and communication requirements.  相似文献

For a IPCS network to effectively deliver services to its mobile users, it must have an efficient way to keep track of the mobile users. The location management fulfills this task through location registration and paging. To reduce the signaling traffic, many schemes such as a local anchor (LA) scheme, per-user caching scheme and pointer forwarding scheme have been proposed in the past. In this paper, we present a new location management scheme which intends to mitigate the signaling traffic as well as reduce the tracking delay in the PCS systems. In this strategy, we choose a set of visitor location registers (VLRs) traversed by users as the mobility agents (MA), which form another level of management in order to make some registration signaling traffic localized. The idea is as follows: instead of always updating to the home location register (HLR), which would become the bottleneck otherwise, many location updates are carried out in the mobility agents. Thus, the two-level pointer forwarding scheme is designed to reduce the signaling traffic: pointers can be set up between VLRs as the traditional pointer forwarding scheme and can also be set up between MAs. The numerical results show that this strategy can significantly reduce the network signaling traffic for users with low CMR without increasing much of the call setup delay.  相似文献

This paper presents a mobile tracking scheme that exploits the predictability of user mobility patterns in wireless PCS networks. In this scheme, a mobile's future location is predicted by the network, based on the information gathered from the mobile's recent report of location and velocity. When a call is made, the network pages the destination mobile around the predicted location. A mobile makes the same location prediction as the network does; it inspects its own location periodically and reports the new location when the distance between the predicted and the actual locations exceeds a threshold. To more realistically represent the various degrees of velocity correlation in time, a Gauss-Markov mobility model is used. For practical systems where the mobility pattern varies over time, we propose a dynamic Gauss-Markov parameter estimator that provides the mobility parameters to the prediction algorithm. Based on the Gauss-Markov model, we describe an analytical framework to evaluate the cost of mobility management for the proposed scheme. We also present an approximation method that reduces the computational complexity of the cost evaluation for multidimensional systems. We then compare the cost of predictive mobility management against that of the regular, nonpredictive distance-based scheme, for both the case with ideal Gauss-Markov mobility pattern and the case with time-varying mobility pattern.  相似文献

Ad hoc mobility management with uniform quorum systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A distributed mobility management scheme using a class of uniform quorum systems (UQS) is proposed for ad hoc networks. In the proposed scheme, location databases are stored in the network nodes themselves, which form a self-organizing virtual backbone within the flat network structure. The databases are dynamically organized into quorums, every two of which intersect at a constant number of databases. Upon location update or call arrival, a mobile's location information is written to or read from all the databases of a quorum, chosen in a nondeterministic manner. Compared with a conventional scheme [such as the use of home location register (HLR)] with fixed associations, this scheme is more suitable for ad hoc networks, where the connectivity of the nodes with the rest of the network can be intermittent and sporadic and the databases are relatively unstable. We introduce UQS, where the size of the quorum intersection is a design parameter that can be tuned to adapt to the traffic and mobility patterns of the network nodes. We propose the construction of UQS through the balanced incomplete block designs. The average cost, due to call loss and location updates using such systems, is analyzed in the presence of database disconnections. Based on the average cost, we investigate the tradeoff between the system reliability and the cost of location updates in the UQS scheme. The problem of optimizing the quorum size under different network traffic and mobility patterns is treated numerically. A dynamic and distributed HLR scheme, as a limiting case of the UQS, is also analyzed and shown to be suboptimal in general. It is also shown that partitioning of the network is sometimes necessary to reduce the cost of mobility management  相似文献

With the proliferation of wireless network technologies, mobile users are expected to demand the same quality of service (QoS) available to fixed users. This paper presents a predictive and adaptive scheme to support timed-QoS guarantees in pico- and micro-cellular environments. The proposed scheme integrates the mobility model into the service model to achieve efficient network resource utilization and avoid severe network congestion. The mobility model uses a probabilistic approach to determine the most likely cluster to be visited by the mobile unit. The admission control is invoked when a new call arrives or an existing call performs a handoff to verify the feasibility of supporting the call. The performance of the proposed schemes is compared to the shadow cluster scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme under different traffic patterns is also presented  相似文献

This paper proposes a restoration scheme based on mobility learning and prediction in the presence of the failure of mobility databases in personal communication systems (PCSs). In PCSs, mobility databases must maintain the current location information of users to provide a fast connection for them. However, the malfunction of mobility databases may cause some location information to be lost. As a result, without an explicit restoration procedure, incoming calls to users may be rejected. Therefore, an explicit restoration scheme against the malfunction of mobility databases is needed to guarantee continuous service availability to users. Introducing mobility learning and prediction into the restoration process allows systems to locate users after a failure of mobility databases. In failure-free operations, the movement patterns of users are learned by a neuro-fuzzy inference system (NFIS). After a failure, an inference process of the NFIS is initiated and the users' future location is predicted. This is used to locate lost users after a failure. This proposal differs from previous approaches using a checkpoint because it does not need a backup process nor additional storage space to store checkpoint information. In addition, simulations show that our proposal can reduce the cost needed to restore the location records of lost users after a failure when compared to the checkpointing scheme  相似文献

The challenge of supporting rapidly growing numbers of mobile users, while constrained by limited radio spectrum, is being faced by cellular network operators worldwide. Several location management schemes have been proposed to improve the performance of such networks, but a fair assessment and comparison of their performance is difficult without an accurate mobility model. The performance of location management schemes depends considerably on subscriber mobility patterns. Some of the recent methods proposed in the literature are reviewed and selected that concentrate on the location updating and paging overhead. To analyze the performance of the selected proposals, two mobility models, namely activity-based mobility model and random mobility model, were used. From the results it is clear that the mobility model has a significant impact and the results described in various proposals using a random mobility model may not reflect the relative performance when deploying schemes in actual systems.  相似文献

This paper introduces a dynamic hierarchical database architecture for location management in personal communications service (PCS) networks. The proposed scheme allows the dynamic adjustments of user location information distribution based on the mobility and calling patterns of the mobile terminals (MTs). A unique distribution strategy is determined for each MT, and location pointers are set up at selected remote locations which indicate the current location of the MTs. This method effectively reduces the signaling and database access overhead for location registration and call delivery. Besides, the required processing is handled by a distributed network of directory registers and centralized coordination is not necessary. The functions of the other network elements, such as the home location register (HLR) and the visitor location registers (VLRs), remain primarily unchanged. This greatly facilitates the deployment of this scheme in current PCS networks  相似文献

We investigate the notion of per-user integrated location and service management in personal communication service (PCS) networks by which a per-user service proxy is created to serve as a gateway between the mobile user and all client-server applications engaged by the mobile user. The service proxy is always colocated with the mobile user's location database such that whenever the MU's location database moves during a location handoff, a service handoff also ensues to colocate the service proxy with the location database. This allows the proxy to know the location of the mobile user all the time to reduce the network communication cost for service delivery. We investigate four integrated location and service management schemes. Our results show that the centralized scheme performs the best when the mobile user's SMR (service to mobility ratio) is low and CMR (call to mobility ratio) is high, while the fully distributed scheme performs the best when both SMR and CMR are high. In all other conditions, the dynamic anchor scheme is the best except when the service context transfer cost is high, under which the static anchor scheme performs the best. Through analytical and simulation results, we demonstrate that different users with vastly different mobility and service patterns should adopt different integrated location and service management methods to optimize system performance. Further, the best integrated scheme always performs better than the best decoupled scheme that considers location and service managements separately and management schemes that do not use any service proxy.  相似文献

A new location update strategy for personal communication services (PCS) networks and its implementation using a genetic algorithm are proposed. Most of the practical cellular mobile systems partition a geographical region into location areas (LAs) and users are made to update on entering a new LA. The main drawback of this scheme is that it does not consider the individual user mobility and call arrival patterns. Combining these factors with the LAbased approach, we propose an optimal update strategy which determines whether or not a user should update in each LA, and minimizes the average location management cost derived from a userspecific mobility model and call generation pattern. The location management cost optimization problem is also elegantly solved using a genetic algorithm. Detailed simulation experiments are conducted to capture the effects of mobility and callarrival patterns on the location update strategy. The conclusion from this work is that skipping location updates in certain LAs leads to the minimization of the overall location management cost for a user with a specific mobility pattern and even with moderately high call arrival rate.  相似文献

This paper considers the support of real-time services to mobile users in an Integrated Services Packet Network. In the currently existing architectures, the service guarantees provided to the mobile hosts are mobility dependent, i.e., mobile hosts experience wide variation in the quality of service and often service disruption when hosts move from one location to another. The network performance degrades significantly when mobile hosts are provided with mobility independent service guarantees. In this paper we have proposed a service model for mobile hosts that can support adaptive applications which can withstand service degradation and disruption, as well as applications which require mobility independent service guarantees. We describe an admission control scheme for implementing this service model and evaluate its performance by simulation experiments. Simulation results show that, if sufficient degree of multiplexing of the mobility dependent and independent services are allowed, the network does not suffer any significant performance degradation and in particular our admission control scheme achieves high utilization of network resources.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a general mobility model suitable for wireless multimedia networks. Our model is based on splitting a region into subregions. Furthermore, we make an analogy between subregions as well as their inter-connections with a multi-class Jackson queueing network comprising of infinite-server nodes. The main attribute of such a network is due to its product-form stationary distribution. Using this model, we are able to obtain a closed analytical form for the spatial traffic distribution corresponding to a specific number of network-connected users with different classes of service and mobility in a typical region. Also, we show the flexibility obtained by the proposed mobility model in representing some general distributions such as sum-of-hyper-exponentials (SOHYP), hyper-Erlang and Cox which were previously suggested to model mobility-related statistical parameters, e.g., cell dwell time and channel holding time. Finally, we apply the proposed model to a few mobility scenarios and obtain the resultant active user's location density.  相似文献

In future mobile telecommunications, due to the huge number of users and the specific functions that support mobility, a significant amount of signaling load will have to be carried by the finite capacity of the radio link. Hence, methods aiming at radio link signaling load reduction are welcome. In this paper we propose and analyze a method that saves paging signaling load by exploiting information related to the terminal location during the most recent interaction between the terminal and the network. The penalty paid is extra processing power and extra paging delays. An analytical model is developed so as to describe the performance versus traffic intensity and mobility conditions. The performance of the proposed paging scheme is investigated, and it is shown that the method operates well even in the worst case, which is the high user mobility conditions. Possible extensions of the method, which exploit information related to the mobility degree of each individual user or information characterizing the mobility conditions in a certain location area, are also proposed. This paper has been partially funded by CEC through the RACE 2066 Mobile Network (MONET) project. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks are deployed as an enhancement to terrestrial wireless networks in order to provide broadband services to users regardless of their location. In addition to global coverage, these satellite systems support communications with hand-held devices and offer low cost-per-minute access cost, making them promising platform for Personal Communication Services (PCS). LEO satellites are expected to support multimedia traffic and to provide their users with the negotiated Quality of Service (QoS). However, the limited bandwidth of the satellite channel, satellite rotation around the Earth and mobility of end-users makes QoS provisioning and mobility management a challenging task. One important mobility problem is the intra-satellite handoff management. The main contribution of this work is to propose Q-Win, a novel call admission and handoff management scheme for LEO satellite networks. A key ingredient in our scheme is a companion predictive bandwidth allocation strategy that exploits the topology of the network and contributes to maintaining high bandwidth utilization. Our bandwidth allocation scheme is specifically tailored to meet the QoS needs of multimedia connections. The performance of Q-Win is compared to that of two recent schemes proposed in the literature. Simulation results show that our scheme offers low call dropping probability, providing for reliable handoff of on-going calls, good call blocking probability for new call requests, while maintaining bandwidth utilization high.  相似文献

Mobile users are increasingly demanding full access to networked communications while they are on the move. Several studies have shown that the overhead incurred by the network to keep track of the current location of mobile users is considerably high. The methods currently used for location tracking incur heavy unnecessary costs by requiring that users update locations in their home networks after each move regardless of the distance at which the move occurs, and that all search attempts for a mobile user are first routed to that user's home network. The Awerbuch–Peleg scheme presents a formal model for location tracking which attempts to minimize the cost of local operations—both move and find operations—through the construction of a regional hierarchy. In this paper we present a performance evaluation of the Awerbuch–Peleg scheme. We also compare its performance to that of the GSM‐based location tracking scheme. It is found that the Awerbuch–Peleg scheme in general results in higher costs than the GSM scheme. The reason for this is found to be some unexpected properties of the read and write sets which are key components of the Awerbuch–Peleg scheme. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Mobile IP is a simple and scalable global mobility solution. However, it may cause excessive signaling traffic and long signaling delay. Mobile IP regional registration is proposed to reduce the number of location updates to the home network and to reduce the signaling delay. This paper introduces a novel distributed and dynamic regional location management for Mobile IP where the signaling burden is evenly distributed and the regional network boundary is dynamically adjusted according to the up-to-date mobility and traffic load for each terminal. In our distributed system, each user has its own optimized system configuration which results in the minimal signaling traffic. In order to determine the signaling cost function, a new discrete analytical model is developed which captures the mobility and packet arrival pattern of a mobile terminal. This model does not impose any restrictions on the shape and the geographic location of subnets in the Internet. Given the average total location update and packet delivery cost, an iterative algorithm is then used to determine the optimal regional network size. Analytical results show that our distributed dynamic scheme outperforms the IETF Mobile IP regional registration scheme for various scenarios in terms of reducing the overall signaling cost.  相似文献
