Acid mine drainage (AMD) sludge, a waste product from coal mine water treatment, was used in this study as an adsorbent to develop a cost-effective treatment approach to phosphorus removal from municipal secondary effluents. Batch tests were carried out to study the effects of pH, temperature, concentration, and contact time for phosphorus removal from wastewater. Batch tests were followed by continuous flow tests using a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Adsorption of orthophosphate onto AMD sludge particles followed the Freundlich isotherm model with an adsorption capacity ranging from 9.89 to 31.97 mg/g when the final effluent concentration increased from 0.21 to 13.61 mg P/L. P adsorption was found to be a rather rapid process and neutral or acidic pH enhanced phosphorus removal. Based on a thermodynamic assessment, P adsorption by AMD sludge was found to be endothermic; consequently, an increase in temperature could also favor phosphorus adsorption. Results from batch tests showed that leaching of metals common to AMD sludges was not likely to be a major issue of concern over the typical pH range (6-8) of secondary wastewater effluents. CSTR tests with three types of water (synthetic wastewater, river water, and municipal secondary effluent) illustrated that P adsorption by AMD sludge was relatively independent of the presence of other ionic species. In treating municipal secondary effluent, a phosphorus removal efficiency in excess of 98% was obtained. Results of this study indicated that it was very promising to utilize AMD sludge for phosphorus removal from secondary effluents and may be relevant to future efforts focused on the control of eutrophication in surface waters.  相似文献

We measured six acidic analgesics or anti-inflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen, fenoprofen, mefenamic acid), two phenolic antiseptics (thymol, triclosan), four amide pharmaceuticals (propyphenazone, crotamiton, carbamazepine, diethyltoluamide), three phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals (nonylphenol, octylphenol, bisphenol A), and three natural estrogens (17beta-estradiol, estrone, estriol) in 24-h composite samples of influents and secondary effluents collected seasonally from five municipal sewage treatment plants in Tokyo. Aspirin was most abundant in the influent, with an average concentration of 7300 ng/L (n = 16), followed by crotamiton (921 ng/L), ibuprofen (669 ng/L), triclosan (511 ng/L), and diethyltoluamide (503 ng/L). These concentrations were 1 order of magnitude lower than those reported in the USA and Europe. This can be ascribed to lower consumption of the pharmaceuticals in Japan. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and thymol were removed efficiently during primary + secondary treatment (> 90% efficiency). On the other hand, amide-type pharmaceuticals, ketoprofen, and naproxen showed poor removal (< 50% efficiency), which is probably due to their lower hydrophobicity (logKow < 3). Because of the persistence of crotamiton during secondary treatment, crotamiton was most abundant among the target pharmaceuticals in the effluent. This is the first paper to report ubiquitous occurrence of crotamiton, a scabicide, in sewage. Because crotamiton is used worldwide and it is persistent during secondary treatment, it is a promising molecular marker of sewage and secondary effluent.  相似文献

Zeolites have been widely used in water treatment and especially clinoptilolite, due to its low cost and high abundance. It has large cation-exchange capacity and is capable of removing large quantities of heavy metals from contaminated water samples. By loading the surface of clinoptilolite with amorphous Fe-oxide species, a total improvement in adsorption capacity could be achieved. Thus, the Clin–Fe oxide system is capable of adsorbing significantly higher heavy metal concentrations than untreated clinoptilolite with simultaneous noticeable decrease in water hardness. Batch adsorption experiments have shown that Clin–Fe system has very large Cu, Zn and Mn adsorption capacity and for most of the cases the treated water samples were suitable for human consumption or agricultural use. New experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of clinoptilolite and of the Clin–Fe system in removal of Cu, Mn, Zn, present simultaneously in water samples, so that the study of metal–sorbent chemical behavior and of the adsorption selectivity would be feasible. Desorption of metals was also examined and an integrated approach of the effectiveness of such materials in drinking water treatment is presented.  相似文献

Analytical methods of speciation for the control of water treatment processes, particularly for the removal of fluoride by aluminium hydroxide polymers as precipitant, have been discussed. It has been shown that combination of ultrafiltration with spectroscopic methods and fluoride ion-selective electrode offers a powerful means for the control of both the precipitant and pollutant, e.g. fluoride. 27Al n.m.r. has been used for the identification of hydrolytic products of aluminium(III) and the ultrafiltration technique has been applied for the separation of the active polymer. The hydrolytic products were also characterized by timed spectrometric method. The interaction between aluminium hydroxide polymer and fluoride was studied by means of fluoride ion-selective electrode, ultrafiltration and atomic absorption spectrometry. The usefulness of these speciation methods for choosing the best conditions for water treatment process is discussed. By applying them for the removal of fluoride, it was found that the fluoride levels can be brought down to less than 10 mg l?1, the limit set by Swiss regulatory body for discharge of waste water. The importance of using such speciation methods for evaluating the possible impact of the “products” of the water treatment (dissolved species in treated water, discharged solid) is also emphasized.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in decentralization of wastewater collection and treatment systems. However, there have been no systematic studies of the performance of small treatment facilities compared with larger plants. A statistical analysis of 4 years of discharge monthly report (DMR) data from 210 operating wastewater treatment facilities was conducted to determine the effect of average flow rate and capacity utilization on effluent biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia, and fecal coliforms relative to permitted values. Relationships were quantified using generalized linear models (GLMs). Small facilities (40 m3/d) had violation rates greater than 10 times that of the largest facilities (400,000 m3/d) for BOD, TSS, and ammonia. For facilities with average flows less than 40,000 m3/d, increasing capacity utilization was correlated with increased effluent levels of BOD and TSS. Larger facilities tended to operate at flows closer to their design capacity while maintaining treatment suggesting greater efficiency.  相似文献

The potential of activated sludge to catalyse bio-oxidation of arsenite [As(III)] to arsenate [As(V)] and bio-reduction of As(V) to As(III) was investigated. In batch experiments (pH 7, 25 degrees C) using activated sludge taken from a treatment plant receiving municipal wastewater non-contaminated with As, As(III) and As(V) were rapidly biotransformed to As(V) under aerobic condition and As(III) under anaerobic one without acclimatisation, respectively. Sub-culture of the activated sludge using a minimal liquid medium containing 100mg As(III)/L and no organic carbon source showed that aerobic arsenic-resistant bacteria were present in the activated sludge and one of the isolated bacteria was able to chemoautotrophically oxidise As(III) to As(V). Analysis of arsenic species in a full-scale oxidation ditch plant receiving As-contaminated wastewater revealed that both As(III) and As(V) were present in the influent, As(III) was almost completely oxidised to As(V) after supply of oxygen by the aerator in the oxidation ditch, As(V) oxidised was reduced to As(III) in the anaerobic zone in the ditch and in the return sludge pipe, and As(V) was the dominant species in the effluent. Furthermore, co-precipitation of As(V) bio-oxidised by activated sludge in the plant with ferric hydroxide was assessed by jar tests. It was shown that the addition of ferric chloride to mixed liquor as well as effluent achieved high removal efficiencies (>95%) of As and could decrease the residual total As concentrations in the supernatant from about 200 microg/L to less than 5 microg/L. It was concluded that a treatment process combining bio-oxidation with activated sludge and coagulation with ferric chloride could be applied as an alternative technology to treat As-contaminated wastewater.  相似文献

During 8 sampling campaigns carried out over a period of two years, 72 samples, including influent and effluent wastewater, and sludge samples from three conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), were analyzed to assess the occurrence and fate of 43 pharmaceutical compounds. The selected pharmaceuticals belong to different therapeutic classes, i.e. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, lipid modifying agents (fibrates and statins), psychiatric drugs (benzodiazepine derivative drugs and antiepileptics), histamine H2-receptor antagonists, antibacterials for systemic use, beta blocking agents, beta-agonists, diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and anti-diabetics. The obtained results showed the presence of 32 target compounds in wastewater influent and 29 in effluent, in concentrations ranging from low ng/L to a few μg/L (e.g. NSAIDs). The analysis of sludge samples showed that 21 pharmaceuticals accumulated in sewage sludge from all three WWTPs in concentrations up to 100 ng/g. This indicates that even good removal rates obtained in aqueous phase (i.e. comparison of influent and effluent wastewater concentrations) do not imply degradation to the same extent. For this reason, the overall removal was estimated as a sum of all the losses of a parent compound produces by different mechanisms of chemical and physical transformation, biodegradation and sorption to solid matter. The target compounds showed very different removal rates and no logical pattern in behaviour even if they belong to the same therapeutic groups. What is clear is that the elimination of most of the substances is incomplete and improvements of the wastewater treatment and subsequent treatments of the produced sludge are required to prevent the introduction of these micro-pollutants in the environment.  相似文献

Two identical bench scale inclined plate membrane bioreactors (ip‐MBRs) were operated for the treatment of real municipal wastewater for 1 year. Sludge retention time (SRT) was varied over the course of operation to investigate the effects on inclined plate function, treatment performance and sludge characteristic. Removal rates of chemical oxygen demand and ammonia over 90% and of total nitrogen (TN) more than 70% were achieved when ip‐MBRs were operated under SRTs between infinite and 40 days while short SRT (20 days) negatively affected TN removal. When the sludge concentration in anoxic tank exceeded 15 g/L, the failure of the inclined plate function was observed, resulting in no difference in sludge concentrations between aerobic and anoxic tanks. To avoid severe effects on inclined plate function and treatment performance, an SRT range of 40–80 days was recommended for ip‐MBRs. Moreover, sludge floc size under prolonged SRT became smaller than that under short SRT due to increased attrition among the sludge floc particles caused by strong aeration needed for keeping a sufficient dissolved oxygen level.  相似文献

The occurrence and removal rate of seven pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, fluoxetine, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin), two metabolites (norfluoxetine, clofibric acid), one degradation product (4-isobutylacetophenone) and 3 estrogens (17α-ethinylestradiol, 17β-estradiol, estrone) were studied in the inlet and outlet of a tertiary sewage treatment plant (STP) in Sweden as well as between different treatment steps in the STP which includes a conventional activated sludge step. Pharmaceuticals in raw household and raw hospital sewage streams leading to the STP were as well investigated. Hydraulic retention times (HRT) of each treatment step was considered for sampling and for the calculation of the removal rates. These rates were above 90%, except for diclofenac, clofibric acid, estrone and ofloxacin. However, only diclofenac and naproxen showed significant effluent loads (> 145 mg/d/1000 inh). Diclofenac was not eliminated during the treatment and in fact even higher concentrations were found at the effluent than in the inlet of the STP. 17α-Ethinylestradiol was not detected in any of the samples. Results indicate that a STP such as the one in Kristianstad, Sweden, with a tertiary treatment is sufficient to remove significantly most of the investigated pharmaceuticals. The chemical treatment improved the removal of several pharmaceuticals especially the antibiotics, which showed step removal rates between 55 and 70%. The expected concentration levels of the pharmaceuticals in the surface water (dilution 1 to 10) close to the outlet of the STP are below the no-observed effect-concentration (NOEC). However, despite that this would imply no important effects in the aquatic environment one cannot rule out negative consequences nearby the STP because most of the NOEC values are derived from acute toxicity data. This may underestimate the real impact of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

Construction costs of 55 municipal wastewater treatment plants in Israel (secondary, advanced secondary, and advanced treatment) were analysed in order to derive cost functions expressing the effects of design flow and treatment level on construction costs. Three equations were derived (statistically significant, p<0.01), one for each treatment level. These indicate that economy of scale may become weaker as treatment level rises. Analysis of the distribution of construction costs revealed negative correlation (p<0.05) between the proportional cost of civil engineering and design flow, positive correlation (p<0.05) between the proportional cost of elecromechanical equipment and design flow, and no correlation between the proportional cost of electricity and control and design flow. Operation costs were found to be 20–70% more sensitive than construction costs to treatment level. The share of operation costs as part of the total annual costs was found to increase both with design flow and treatment level, whereas the share of construction costs concurrently decreased. The implication of the findings on policy, and consequently on treatment plants performance is discussed in the last part of the paper.  相似文献

Six different wastewater treatment plants were monitored in order to identify the main bioaerosol sources and to evaluate the effect of the aeration system used in the biological treatment (air diffusion, horizontal rotors and surface turbine aerators) on the airborne microorganism levels to which workers may be exposed. Air samples were collected by using a single stage impactor. Total count of mesophilic bacteria was used as the monitoring parameter to compare the impact of the aeration system on generic bacterial bioaerosols rather than a quantitative estimation for pathogens or fecal indicator microbes. In this study, pre-treatment, biological treatment and sludge thickening were the processes that generated the highest amount of bioaerosols. Aeration systems involving mechanical agitation of the wastewater, such as horizontal rotors and surface turbines, generated a larger amount of bioaerosols (between 450 and 4580CFU/m(3)) than air diffuser aerators (between 22 and 57CFU/m(3)). The levels of airborne bacteria generated by air diffusers were very similar to those registered at the background locations (lower than 50CFU/m(3)), unaffected by the activities taking place in the wastewater treatment plant. The use of air diffusers as an aeration system for the biological treatment would significantly minimise the potential biological hazard that wastewater treatment plant workers may be exposed to.  相似文献

In this study, flat sheet submerged MBR (FS-SMBR) was investigated under 6 and 4 h hydraulic retention times (HRT) and 40 days solid retention time with real municipal wastewater. The implementation of the treatment system was evaluated in terms of physico-chemical and microbial analysis as well as sludge characterization. The permeate of FS-SMBR complied with the standards for reuse and non-detectable levels of faecal coliform was achieved at 6 and 4 h HRTs, with pore-blocking resistances (Rt) of 28 × 1011 and 40 × 1011/m, respectively. Examining another dominant factor, that is, sludge viscosity, the best results were acquired using HRT 4 h for domestic wastewater. Furthermore, the results obtained were validated and calibrated using the GPS-X software simulator, and the results of modelled data were completely matched with the experimental data under the same conditions.  相似文献

The effect of in situ photodeposited ferric ion onto TiO2 surface on the degradation of alachlor was investigated in the presence of the UV radiation. The photodegradation rate of alachlor could be described as an apparent first order. The rate constant (K(a)) of alachlor increased from 0.021 to 0.060 h(-1) as the number of coating times increased from 1- to 5-times in the absence of ferric ion, where the corresponding thicknesses of the TiO2 film were 67 and 174 nm. The rate constant (K(a)) increased from 0.030 to 0.060 h(-1) as pH value decreasd from pH 9 to 5 in the presence of only TiO2 immobilised with 5-times of coating. The rate constant increased slightly from 0.031 to 0.050 h(-1) as the concentration of ferric ion increased from 0.75 to 7.5 mg Fe3+ l(-1) in the absence of TiO2. However, those increased from 0.051 to 0.110 h(-1) in the presence of both TiO2 and ferric ion. In situ photodeposition of ferric ion onto the TiO2 surface enhanced the rate constant of photodegradation of alachlor by about 80% with an adding 7.5 mgFe3+ l(-1). During the alachlor photodegradation, three kinds of non-toxic organic compounds derived from alachlor were detected in 1 h.  相似文献

The removal efficiency of several pharmaceutically active compounds from two different surface water types was investigated. Two different nanofiltration (NF) membranes (Trisep TS-80 and Desal HL) were first studied at low feed water recoveries (10%). In a second phase, the combination of an NF unit at higher feed water recovery (80%) with subsequent granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration of the permeate was investigated. Results indicate that removal of the selected pharmaceuticals with NF is mainly influenced by charge effects: negatively charged solutes are better removed, compared with uncharged solutes, which are, in turn, better removed compared with positively charged solutes. This latter trend is mainly due to charge attractions between the negatively charged membrane surface and positively charged solutes. Increasing feed concentrations of positively charged pharmaceuticals lead to increasing rejection values, due to membrane charge-shielding effects. The removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals with the combination NF/GAC is extremely high. This is mainly due to an increased adsorption capacity of the activated carbon since the largest part of the natural organic matter (NOM) is removed in the NF step. This NOM normally competes with pharmaceuticals for adsorption sites on the carbon.  相似文献

Chelating agents are thought to be useful for the remediation of metal-polluted soils with adequate organic matter, but the effects of these substances on the plants or seed bank of plant communities that occur in the soils are relatively unknown. In this work, the effects of two chelating substances (EDTA and DTPA) on a wet grassland plant community affected by the presence of the abandoned copper mine "Fernandito" (Garganta de los Montes, Madrid) were compared. A microcosm bioassay (6 months) was designed using the soil's top layer containing the grassland's seed bank. This soil showed a high Cu pollution level, significant contents of Zn and Cd (1120, 190, and 15 ppm, respectively), a pH of 5 and an OM content of 6.2%. The soil was subjected to three different treatments: a) untreated soil (control), b) the addition of 1 g/kg EDTA, or of c) 1 g/kg DTPA. The results presented here are those related to the plant cover, species richness, aboveground and subterranean biomass and chemical composition of the most abundant plants. Neither EDTA nor DTPA caused intense negative effects on the plants rather they significantly increased the amount of copper accumulated in aboveground parts and roots. In particular, Agrostis castellana and Corrigiola telephiifolia extracted high amounts of copper when grown in the soil with added EDTA, although they showed some nutritional imbalances (lower P contents). In contrast, lower metal concentrations were detected in plants grown in the DTPA amended soil.  相似文献

To better understand granule growth and breakage processes in aerobic granular sludge systems, the particle size of aerobic granules was tracked over 50 days of wastewater treatment within four sequencing batch reactors fed with abattoir wastewater. These experiments tested a novel hypothesis stating that granules equilibrate to a certain stable granule size (the critical size) which is determined by the influence of process conditions on the relative rates of granule growth and granule breakage or attrition. For granules that are larger than the critical size, granule breakage and attrition outweighs granule growth, and causes an overall reduction in granule size. For granules at the critical size, the overall growth and size reduction processes are balanced, and granule size is stable. For granules that are smaller than the critical size, granule growth outweighs granule breakage and attrition, and causes an overall increase in granule size. The experimental reactors were seeded with mature granules that were either small, medium, or large sized, these having respective median granule sizes of 425 μm, 900 μm and 1125 μm. An additional reactor was seeded with a mixture of the sized granules to represent the original source of the granular sludge. The experimental results were analysed together with results of a previous granule formation study that used mixed seeding of granules and floccular sludge. The analysis supported the critical size hypothesis and showed that granules in the reactors did equilibrate towards a common critical size of around 600–800 μm. Accordingly, it is expected that aerobic granular reactors at steady-state operation are likely to have granule size distributions around a characteristic critical size. Additionally, the results support that maintaining a quantity of granules above a particular size is important for granule formation during start-up and for process stability of aerobic granule systems. Hence, biomass washout needs to be carefully managed to optimize granule formation during the reactor start-up.  相似文献
