N.-G. Kim, R. Growney, and M. T. Turvey (see record 1997-02774-001) demonstrated the nonnecessity of the DMP strategy, the cornerstone of the wayfinding theory proposed by J. E. Cutting, K. Springer, P. A. Braren, and S. H. Johnson (see record 1992-22181-001). Based on the reanalyses of the results of N.-G. Kim et al.'s Experiment 2, J. E. Cutting (see record 1997-02766-001) proposes another retinal variable DDLO as a substitute for DMP. The evidence for this new variable, however, is only circumstantial. A preferential strategy, we argue, follows from recognizing that different fields of view are samplings of optical flow that enhance the detection of invariants, such as that which is hypothesized to specify direction of heading. The flow of activation from concepts to phonological forms within the word production system was examined in 3 experiments. In Experiment 1, participants named pictures while ignoring superimposed distractor pictures that were semantically related, phonologically related, or unrelated. Eye movements and naming latencies were recorded. The distractor pictures affected the latencies of gaze shifting and vocal naming. The magnitude of the phonological effects increased linearly with latency, excluding lapses of attention as the cause of the effects. In Experiment 2, no distractor effects were obtained when both pictures were named. When pictures with superimposed distractor words were named or the words were read in Experiment 3, the words influenced the latencies of gaze shifting and picture naming, but the pictures yielded no such latency effects in word reading. The picture-word asymmetry was obtained even with equivalent reading and naming latencies. The picture-picture effects suggest that activation spreads continuously from concepts to phonological forms, whereas the picture-word asymmetry indicates that the amount of activation is limited and task dependent. Adrenoleukodystrophy is an X-chromosome-linked recessive disease characterized by primary atrophy of the adrenal glands with or without Addison's disease and low plasma cortisol levels, and a degeneration of white matter of the central nervous system with blindness. In suspected cases of adrenoleukodystrophy an impaired rise in plasma cortisol levels after adrenocorticotrophin stimulation may be diagnostic. With the electron microscope, pathognomonic intracytoplasmic lamellar inclusions have been seen in adrenal cortical cells, peripheral nerve Schwann's cells, testicular interstitial cells, and in macrophages of the brain. Adrenoleukodystrophy appears to be a genetically determined lipid storage disease with an error in membrane sterol metabolism. A 10-year-old boy with adrenoleukodystrophy had visual loss, a prominent early symptom. The ocular abnormality consisted of a disproportionate loss of nerve fibers from the macular region. No intracytoplasmic lamellar inclusions were identified in cells representing macrophages within the optic nerve. They contained myelin debris suggestive of end-stage disease.  相似文献

A case of Macrozamia riedlei seed poisoning is described in a young Dachshund. Vomiting and depression commenced within 6 h of ingestion; other signs that developed included severe hepatopathy, jaundice, abdominal pain that was unresponsive to analgesics, severe gastro-intestinal haemorrhage and thrombocytopenia as well as crystalluria and marrow dyserythropoiesis. The dog was euthanased 6 days after ingestion of the seeds.  相似文献

Rapid eye movements during rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep are associated with rapid, shallow breathing. We wanted to know whether this effect persisted during increased respiratory drive by CO2. In eight healthy subjects, we recorded electroencephalographic, electrooculographic, and electromyographic signals, ventilation, and end-tidal PCO2 during the night. Inspiratory PCO2 was changed to increase end-tidal PCO2 by 3 and 6 Torr. During normocapnia, rapid eye movements were associated with a decrease in total breath time by -0.71 +/- 0.19 (SE) s (P < 0.05) because of shortened expiratory time (-0.52 +/- 0.08 s, P < 0.001) and with a reduced tidal volume (-89 +/- 27 ml, P < 0.05) because of decreased rib cage contribution (-75 +/- 18 ml, P < 0.05). Abdominal (-11 +/- 16 ml, P = 0.52) and minute ventilation (-0.09 +/- 0.21 ml/min, P = 0.66) did not change. In hypercapnia, however, rapid eye movements were associated with a further shortening of total breath time. Abdominal breathing was also inhibited (-79 +/- 23 ml, P < 0.05), leading to a stronger inhibition of tidal volume and minute ventilation (-1.84 +/- 0.54 l/min, P < 0.05). We conclude that REM-associated respiratory changes are even more pronounced during hypercapnia because of additional inhibition of abdominal breathing. This may contribute to the reduction of the hypercapnic ventilatory response during REM sleep.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Family studies have shown that abnormalities of smooth pursuit eye movement are increased in the adult relatives of schizophrenic probands as well as in the probands themselves. More recently, an inability of schizophrenic subjects to inhibit reflexive saccades reliably has been shown. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the latter dysfunction is part of the extended schizophrenia phenotype. METHOD: With the use of infrared oculography, measurements of reflexive saccades and antisaccades were undertaken in 29 probands with schizophrenia, 50 of their nonpsychotic first-degree relatives, and 38 unrelated healthy volunteers. RESULTS: Probands, relatives, and healthy subjects showed no overall differences in the generation of reflexive saccades. However, in the antisaccade task, probands showed more saccadic distractibility when they were required to inhibit reflexive saccades. Analysis of corrective saccades showed that this was not due to failed comprehension or motivation. Relatives of the probands with high saccadic distractibility showed a higher distractibility rate than relatives of the probands with normal distractibility. Across all subjects, females showed a higher rate of distractibility errors than males. CONCLUSIONS: The ability to suppress reflexive saccades is an objective neurocognitive measure that is impaired in schizophrenic patients and in a proportion of their biological relatives. This antisaccade abnormality may be a vulnerability marker in a subset of schizophrenic patients and their families.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although mounting evidence supports the idea that smooth pursuit abnormality marks the genetic liability to schizophrenia, the precise ocular motor mechanism underlying the abnormality remains unknown. Based on recent findings in schizophrenia, we hypothesize that subtle deficits in the ability to hold online and/or use extraretinal motion information underlie the pursuit abnormality in vulnerable individuals. METHODS: The hypothesis was tested in 69 first-degree, biological relatives of probands with schizophrenia; 26 relatives had schizophrenia spectrum personalities (SSP). Subjects recruited from the community (n=71; 29 with SSP), without a known family history of psychosis, constituted the comparison groups. The traditional smooth pursuit gain measure, which is a ratio of smooth pursuit eye velocity in response to both retinal and extraretinal motion signals and the target velocity, was obtained. In addition, newly developed measures of predictive smooth pursuit (ie, in the presence of only extraretinal motion signals) were obtained. The latter measures were evaluated after the current retinal motion signals were made unavailable by briefly making the target invisible. RESULTS: Relatives, particularly those with SSP, showed significantly poorer predictive pursuit response to extraretinal motion signals (F(2,136)=6.51, P<.005), compared with the community subjects. However, the traditional smooth pursuit gain in response to both retinal and extraretinal motion signals was not different between groups. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that relatives of patients with schizophrenia, particularly those with SSP, have specific deficits in predictive pursuit based on only extraretinal motion signals. Normal smooth pursuit gain in response to both retinal and extraretinal motion signals is likely due to compensation based on retinal motion information. The latter suggests normal retinal motion processing and smooth pursuit motor output.  相似文献

Two patients with unilateral abducens palsy used their paretic-but visually superior-eye for fixation. When participants read a text while searching for a target letter, they are more likely to miss the target letter embedded in frequent function words than in less frequent content words. This effect is usually observed with a text displayed normally, for which it has been found that frequent function words are fixated for a smaller amount of time than less frequent content words. However, similar pattern of omissions have been observed with a rapid serial visual presentation procedure in which words appear one at a time. These parallel results would demonstrate that fixation duration per se is not the proximal cause of the missing-letter effect only if eye movements are not made during the rapid serial visual presentation procedure. Therefore, the authors performed eye monitoring during the rapid serial visual presentation procedure. Results revealed that, with a rapid serial visual presentation procedure, participants fixated function and content words for almost the entire presentation duration. We evaluated a means of training special education teachers in supervisory strategies for improving specific teaching-related performances of their paraprofessional, teacher assistants. Using classroom-based instruction and on-the-job monitoring and feedback, seven teachers were trained to systematically observe the data collection and teaching performances of their assistants as well as to provide contingent feedback. The supervisory training for teachers, evaluated using a multiple-probe design across groups of assistants, was accompanied by improvements in data collection performances among seven of eight assistants. Improvement in other teaching skill applications also occurred. The improved performance among the assistants was maintained across a 17-month follow-up period. The supervisory training seemed to have multiple benefits in that the teachers' own teaching-related performances improved once teachers were trained to systematically observe and provide feedback to their assistants. The need for continued research is discussed to evaluate the benefits of supervisory training to improve and maintain other important areas of staff performance.  相似文献
