The modeled recycled aggregate concrete (MRAC) which is an idealized model for the real recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) was used in this study. The MRCAs prepared with two types of old mortars were modified by an accelerated carbonation process. The effects of carbonation of MRCA on the micro-hardness of MRCA and the mechanical properties of MRAC were investigated. The results indicated that the micro-hardness of the old interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and the old mortar in the carbonated MRCAs was higher than that in the uncarbonated MRCAs, and the enhancement of the old ITZ was more significant than that of the old mortar. The compressive strength and modulus of MRACs increased when the carbonated MRCAs were utilized, and the improvement was more significant for MRAC prepared with a higher w/c. In addition, a numerical study was carried out and it showed that the improvement in strength by carbonation treatment was less obvious when the difference between the new and old mortar was larger.

In this paper, a detailed investigation is conducted to analyze the relationships between the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Based on a large number of experimental results published worldwide in literature from 1985 to 2004, an experimental database is developed with regard to the main mechanical properties of RAC. In particular, the relations between the compressive strength, the density, the splitting tensile strength, the flexural strength, and the elastic modulus are investigated and discussed in detail. It is found that the interrelationships between the mechanical properties of RAC could be quite different from those of normal concrete. Some improved new equations are proposed for the prediction of the relations between the mechanical properties of RAC based on the statistical regression analysis with the least squares method.

Results of a comprehensive investigation about the durability of structural-grade concrete made with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) are presented. The RCA-concrete mixes were proportioned using a new concrete mix design method, termed the equivalent mortar volume (EMV) method. The EMV method is based on the hypothesis that RCA is a composite material comprising mortar and natural aggregate; therefore, when proportioning a concrete mixture containing RCA, one must account for the relative amount and properties of each the two components and adjust both the fresh coarse aggregate and fresh paste content of the mix accordingly. Tests were conducted to study the freeze–thaw, chloride penetration and carbonation resistances of the mixes proportioned by the EMV method and by the conventional method. Results of the test showed that RCA-concrete mixes proportioned by the EMV method have higher resistance to freeze–thaw action, chloride penetration and carbonation than those designed with the conventional method, and they satisfy the current requirements for concrete exposed to severe environments.

Recycled demolished concrete (DC) as recycled aggregate (RA) and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is generally suitable for most construction applications. Low-grade applications, including sub-base and roadwork, have been implemented in many countries; however, higher-grade activities are rarely considered. This paper examines relationships among DC characteristics, properties of their RA and strength of their RAC using regression analysis. Ten samples collected from demolition sites are examined. The results show strong correlation among the DC samples, properties of RA and RAC. It should be highlighted that inferior quality of DC will lower the quality of RA and thus their RAC. Prediction of RAC strength is also formulated from the DC characteristics and the RA properties. From that, the RAC performance from DC and RA can be estimated. In addition, RAC design requirements can also be developed at the initial stage of concrete demolition. Recommendations are also given to improve the future concreting practice.

Many environmental problems caused by the large volumes of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), the lack of adequate deposition sites and the shortage of natural resources have led to the use of C&DW as replacement of natural aggregates in the production of new concrete. As in the case of natural aggregates, when recycled aggregates are used to manufacture structural concrete, the assessment of their physical, mechanical and durable characteristics is a key issue. The different physical and mechanical properties of the recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) are evaluated. RCA was obtained by crushing conventional concretes with different strength levels (different w/c ratios) containing four different types of natural coarse aggregates (three crushed stones and a siliceous gravel), which differ in shape, composition and surface texture. There is a significant influence of the natural coarse aggregate (NCA) on the properties of RCA, which in many cases is greater than that of the w/c ratio of the source concrete.

The water permeability, air permeability and surface permeability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) are compared with those of a control concrete made with natural aggregate. The study shows that the permeation properties of RAC depend on mix-design, conditions of curing and drying of samples. Relationships between permeability and other physical characteristics of concrete such as water absorption capacity and diffusivity are discussed. According to the criteria existing for ordinary concrete made with natural aggregate, RAC could be classified as being of moderate quality rather than poor quality. The testing methodology shows that some of the techniques used to measure the permeability of RAC need to be modified in order with the distinctive characteristics of this material.

The fracture properties of four types of concrete prepared using natural coarse aggregate and recycled coarse aggregate and conventional and particle packing method (PPM) of mix design approaches are studied. The three‐point bending (TPB) test is performed using three different sizes of single edge notched beam. The fracture energy is calculated from the load‐CMOD curve obtained in the TPB test, and in this process the load‐CMOD curve is curtailed at 2% of the depth of the beam. Based on CTODc and w1 relationship, appropriate softening function is used to estimate the double‐K fracture parameters. The fracture energy and fracture toughness parameters of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is inferior to the natural aggregate concrete (NAC). The PPM mix design improves the fracture properties of concrete in comparison to the conventional mix design approach. The fracture properties of PPM mix designed RAC are comparable to that of NAC prepared using conventional method.

One of the most promising strategies to manage the large volume of construction and demolition (C&D) waste is recycling and utilizing it for the production of new concrete. However, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) derived from C&D waste possesses relatively higher porosity and water absorption capability, which often limits its wild utilization. In this study, pozzolan slurry (includes silica fume, nano-SiO2, and fly ash slurries) and CO2 treatments as enhancement methods for RCA were investigated. Test results showed that CO2 treatment was more effective in reducing water absorption and enhancing fluidity, whereas pozzolan slurry treatment could decrease fluidity. Mortars prepared with treated RCA exhibited better mechanical strength and higher resistance towards carbonation and chloride-ion diffusion than those with untreated RCA. Both pozzolan slurry and CO2 treatments enhanced not only the properties of RCA, but also the old and new interfacial transition zones (ITZs) as demonstrated in the measured micro-hardness and SEM observation.

Use of recycled concrete aggregate in high-strength concrete
The results of a test programme to study the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in high-strength, 50 N/mm2 or greater, concrete are described. The effects of coarse RCA content on the ceiling strength, bulk engineering and durability properties of such concretes have been established. The results showed that up to 30% coarse RCA had no effect on concrete strength, but therafter there was a gradual reduction as the RCA content increased. A method of accommodating the effects of high RCA content, involving simple adjustment to water/cement ratio of the mix is given. It is shown that high-strength RCA concrete will have equivalent engineering and durability performance to concrete made with natural aggregates, for corresponding 28-day design strengths. The practical implications of the study for concrete construction are discussed.

Influence of field recycled coarse aggregate on properties of concrete
This paper investigates the influence of different amounts of recycled coarse aggregates obtained from a demolished RCC culvert 15 years old on the properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). A new term called “coarse aggregate replacement ratio (CRR)” is introduced and is defined as the ratio of weight of recycled coarse aggregate to the total weight of coarse aggregate in a concrete mix. To analyze the behaviour of concrete in both the fresh and hardened state, a coarse aggregate replacement ratio of 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0 are adopted in the concrete mixes. The properties namely compressive and indirect tensile strengths, modulus of elasticity, water absorption, volume of voids, density of hardened concrete and depth of chloride penetration are studied. From the experimental results it is observed that the concrete cured in air after 7 days of wet curing shows better strength than concrete cured completely under water for 28 days for all coarse aggregate replacement ratios. The volume of voids and water absorption of recycled aggregate concrete are 2.61 and 1.82% higher than those of normal concrete due to the high absorption capacity of old mortar adhered to recycled aggregates. The relationships among compressive strength, tensile strengths and modulus of elasticity are developed and verified with the models reported in the literature for both normal and recycled aggregate concrete. In addition, the non-destructive testing parameters such as rebound number and UPV (Ultrasonic pulse velocity) are reported. The study demonstrates the potential use of field recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) in concrete.

The effects of the use of Class F fly ash as a cement addition on the hardened properties of recycled aggregate concrete were determined. In this study, four series of concrete mixtures were prepared with water-to-cement (w/c) ratios of 0.55, 0.50, 0.45 and 0.40. The recycled aggregate was used as 0%, 20%, 50% and 100% replacements of coarse natural aggregate. Furthermore, fly ash was employed as 0% and 25% addition of cement. Although the use of recycled aggregate had a negative effect on the mechanical properties of concrete, it was found that the addition of fly ash was able to mitigate this detrimental effect. Also, the addition of fly ash reduced the drying shrinkage and enhanced the resistance to chloride ion penetration of concrete prepared with recycled aggregate. Moreover, it was found that the drying shrinkage and chloride ion penetration decreased as the compressive strength increased. Compared with the results of our previous study, the present study has quantified the advantages of using fly ash as an additional cementitious material in recycled aggregate concrete over the use of fly use as a replacement of cement.

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental investigation into the bond behavior between recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and deformed steel rebars, with the main variables being the recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratio (RCAr) and water-to-cement ratio of the concrete mixture. The investigation into splitting cracking strength indicates that the degradation of the bond splitting tensile stress of the cover concrete was affected by not only the roundness of the coarse aggregate particles but also the weak interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the cement paste and the RCA that has a more porous structure in the ITZ than normal concrete. In this study, a linear relationship between the bond strength and the density of the RCA was found, but the high compressive strength reduced the effects of the parameters. To predict the bond strength of RAC using the main parameters, a multivariable model was developed using nonlinear regression analysis. It can be inferred from this study that the degradation characteristic of the bond strength of RAC can be predicted well, whereas other empirical equations and code provisions are very conservative.

An accelerated carbonation technique was employed to strengthen the quality of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) in this study. The properties of the carbonated RCAs and their influence on the mechanical properties of new concrete were then evaluated. Two types of RCAs, an old type of RCAs sourced from demolished old buildings and a new type of RCAs derived from a designed concrete mixture, were used. The chosen RCAs were firstly carbonated for 24 h in a carbonation chamber with a 100% CO2 concentration at a pressure level of 0.1 Bar and 5.0 Bar, respectively. The experimental results showed that the properties of RCAs were improved after the carbonation treatment. This resulted in performance enhancement of the new concrete prepared with the carbonated RCAs, especially an obvious increase of the mechanical strengths for the concrete prepared with the 100% carbonated new RCAs. Moreover, the replacement percentage of natural aggregates by the carbonated RCAs can be increased to 60% with an insignificant reduction in the mechanical properties of the new concrete.

This paper analyzes the possibility of applying the Compressible Packing Model (CPM) for the proportion of concrete mixtures produced with Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCAs). As a matter of fact, the RCAs are composed of natural aggregates and attached mortar and, as a consequence, they generally present a higher porosity in comparison with ordinary natural aggregates. The higher porosity of RCAs can affect the resulting Recycled Aggregate Concretes (RACs) properties and, for this reason, the mix design procedure available in literature for ordinary concrete mixture cannot be applied as such in the case of RACs. In this context, the present work first presents a preliminary study in which the optimal mixing procedure for RACs is investigated and then, a possible extension of the CPM in the case of RACs is analyzed. Several structural RAC mixtures were designed for three strength classes (25, 45 and 65 MPa) by considering the variation of the aggregate replacement from 0 to 100%. Finally, the proposed procedure is experimentally validated by performing mechanical and durability tests on selected mixtures for the three strength classes with a RCAs content up to 60%. The results reported herein demonstrate the applicability of the CPM for recycled concrete mixtures and highlight as the rational use of RCAs lead to produce structural RAC without affecting its mechanical and the durability performance.
