This article reports on the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest, which is given by the Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest annually to two individuals who have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. This year's recipients are Maria P. P. Root and James G. Kelly. Root received the citation for her outstanding research, writing, and overall contribution to the public policy discourse on the topic of race, with particular emphasis on racially mixed people, relationships, and identities. Kelly was cited for important contributions to the public interest as a rigorous scholar, an examiner of values, and a respecter and protector of the rights and needs of public consumers of psychology. Leonard Krasner was a psychologist with a degree in experimental psychology. He was known for his influential review of verbal conditioning studies that were published in Psychological Bulletin. After collaborating with a student, Leonard Ullmann, the two Lens began a collaboration that lasted more than 20 years. Their early work on verbal conditioning was followed, in 1965, by two landmark books: Case studies in behavior modification and Research in behavior modification. The books announced the term "behavior modification" and featured the work of many friends Len Krasner had made and invited to the Palo Alto VA to give presentations. In 1969 they published A psychological approach to abnormal behavior, which was the first, and is still the best, behavioral book on the topic. They followed that in 1973 with Behavior influence and personality, which remains one of the best integrative textbooks, combining sociological and behavioral perspectives. Leonard Krasner died November 28, 2007, in Reno, Nevada. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Psychology has recently identified itself as a health care profession and codified this change in the bylaws of the American Psychological Association. Although psychologists make a number of contributions to the nation's health-and mental health-the most identifiable activity focuses on treating physical or psychological pathology with psychological interventions. Recently, health care policymakers have established that evidence supporting the efficacy of these interventions is more than sufficient for their inclusion in health care systems around the world. To promote faster and more widespread dissemination of these interventions specifically targeting problems severe enough to be included in health care systems and to solidify the identification of psychology as a health care profession, perhaps it is time for a change in terminology. It is proposed that psychologists label these procedures psychological treatments so as to differentiate them from more generic psychotherapy, which is often used outside of the scope of health care systems. Remembers the life of Eugene Leonard Hartley, who was born in New York City on January 16, 1912, and died of heart disease in Paradise, California, on September 9, 2002. Hartley, born Eugene Leonard Horowitz, changed his surname in 1942. The author recalls his life and career, highlighting his important work concerning fundamental social issues such as intergroup relations, peace, prejudice, and other minority issues. Hartley also coedited (with Ted Newcombe) what the author deems to be one of the most important books in increasing the salience of social psychology, Readings in Social Psychology (1947). The Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. The 1988 winner is Leonard Berkowitz. Berkowitz is cited for his integrative work in combining experimental and social psychology theoretically and methodologically. His systematic research on aggression both with respect to its causes and its targets has been comprehensive in its scope, precise in its specification, and cumulative in its impact upon theory and practice. In addition to the citation, a biography and selected bibliography of Berkowitz's published works are presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Presents an obituary of Leonard D. Eron (1920-2007). Eron conducted one of the longest running (spanning over 40 years) longitudinal studies on aggression in children to date: the Columbia County Longitudinal Study. Eron's conclusion that media violence causes aggression in children lead to a storm of controversy. Eron's conclusions were supported by a second longitudinal study he and Rowell Huesmann conducted between 1977 and 1995, the Cross-National Television Study. Eron was a prodigious author of books and articles, and a frequent public policy advocate on Capitol Hill. He was also a Fulbright scholar twice and received APA's Award for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Media Psychology. Len is survived by his wife Madeline of Lindenhurst, Illinois, his daughter Barbara and two grandchildren, and his son Don. His daughter Joan died in 1990. Society is in need of and has demanded psychological services; there is an increase in concern with the professional problems inherent in offering services to the public. A 6-point program is offered: (a) Experienced clinicians are needed to teach university courses in psychotherapy or diagnostic testing. (b) Full professional responsibility must await postdoctoral experience. (c) Psychology must take active steps to encourage high school students and undergraduates to seek psychology as a vocation. (d) New measures must be taken to develop a genuine "research attitude," if productivity in the clinical as well as other areas of psychology is to be increased. (e) A new journal is needed that will provide space for airing clinical professional problems, clinical case studies, clinical theoretical articles, and similar material. (f) Psychological organizations should take heed of the needs and demands of the service-oriented psychologists, "to place high on the agenda problems of professionalization." Foreword.
This special issue serves as a benchmark of psychotherapy, on the occasion of the Centennial of the American Psychological Association. It reflects current theoretical insights, attitudes and approaches to research, and research findings. Further, it deals with the training of psychotherapists and how therapists practice today. The journal itself was created in 1964, and has become a major contributor to the discipline of psychology. The articles are inviting and challenging and give us the opportunity to reflect on the wondrous process of psychotherapy. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In this column, I wish to make a few observations on what I believe to be a rather serious problem in relation to diagnostic psychological testing. I cannot guarantee the generality of these observations, but I am led to believe, by my own experience and by that of others to whom I have talked, that the practices to which I shall refer are rather widespread. Apparently many staff psychologists regard diagnostic testing as a necessary, but at best tedious and relatively unimportant, responsibility. As a result, a disproportionate amount of the diagnostic testing is assigned to interns or trainees, thus reinforcing the notion among other professional people, and among the trainees themselves, that this is a second-rate, low level skill. I believe that, unless a fundamental change of attitude toward diagnostic testing is effected in many of our training centers, clinical psychology as a profession must eventually suffer. Psychotherapy has utility for a wide variety of circumstances that have significant economic, personal, and social consequences. This special issue is a small attempt to address some of these problems. There are important omissions, such as the frequent use of psychotropic medications in psychotherapy, psychological rehabilitation of patients and families with chronic health problems, and hospice care. The need for establishment of a national policy on how psychotherapy can be used to create more effective and humane solutions to societal problems has been identified. The challenge is how to fund the study of health and other social problems responsive to psychotherapy. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Emory L. Cowen.
Presents an overview of the career contributions of Emory L. Cowen. For his remarkable contributions to conceptual, empirical and human service advances in the fields of community and clinical psychology, community mental health and education. He has been instrumental in the creation of a field for an entire generation of psychologists. His work has changed public schools throughout the United States. His ideas, research, model programs, program evaluations, and workshops have inspired others to generate new programs that provide affordable human services to thousands of children who are otherwise unlikely to receive help. He pioneered early detection and secondary prevention research. His clear thinking and conceptual challenges have fostered the study of primary prevention and wellness in mental health, both as a field for research and as a social policy. His tireless efforts as President of APA's Division of Community Psychology, a member of the Prevention Task Panel of the President's Commission on Mental Health, and the APA Task Force on Promotion, Prevention and Intervention Alternatives in Psychology are examples of his energetic contributions to psychology in the public interest. Comments on Robert Carson's article titled The status of diagnostic testing (see record 2005-07925-004). The article focuses on the importance of psychodiagnostic testing states very clearly and consistently a position shared by many in our profession, but one which is predicated on a number of assumptions which--as value judgments--lack empirical validity and, in fact, serve to engender and perpetuate interprofessional rivalry, professional mediocrity, and scientific stagnation. This writer does not deny the right to hold to and express value judgments per se; rather, he wishes to suggest alternatives to those underlying Carson's argument. Three assumptions are implied in the latter: (a) the "tripartite organization" of professions, i.e., psychiatry, clinical psychology, and psychiatric social work, constitutes a satisfactory state of affairs and should endure; (b) unique contributions to the service endeavor must arise from each profession and will obtain in the case of psychology via the psychodiagnostic enterprise; and (c) the service function (treatment?) is implemented, facilitated, or benefited as a result of the psychodiagnostic activity (testing) of psychologists. The commenter responds to the assumptions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
