The Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest presents two awards annually to persons who, in the estimation of the Committee on Psychology in the Public Interest Awards, have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary contribution or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. One award is presented to a senior psychologist, and the other recognizes a psychologist who has made a significant contribution to the public interest less than 15 years after the receipt of his or her degree. The citation, biography, and selected bibliography of one of the 1993 recipients of this award, Parick H. DeLeon, are presented here. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

The Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by distinguished contributions in the public interest. For 1984, Patrick H. DeLeon is cited for his leadership role in empowering the field of psychology with a strength of public purpose and public responsibility. Through his efforts as psychology's most dedicated colleague on Capitol Hill, DeLeon has contributed his professional effectiveness to improved federal support for research, education and training, and service delivery. Within psychology, he has contributed to its involvement with the legal system, to its public image and message, to its growth as a scientific and professional discipline, and to its professional status. Through his own example, he has charted psychology's course as a discipline and profession in making important contributions to human welfare, social justice, and economic growth. Along with the citation, a biography and bibliography of DeLeon's works are presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1972 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award by Patrick Suppes. The award citation reads: "For his wide-ranging contributions to theory, experiment, and application in psychology. His theories, which combine logical precision, mathematical power, and testability, include fundamental probabilistic analyses of learning, algebraic studies of utility, geometric representations of perceptual processes, and penetrating work on the logic of measurement. His experiments concern utility and game situations, discrete and continuous learning, and the attainment of logical, arithmetic, and linguistic concepts. His applications to computer-assisted instruction grow out of explicit theory and pertinent experiments and exploit the nationwide computer facility he has developed. Outside of psychology, he is widely respected for his work in logic and the philosophy of science, especially physics." A biography and a listing of the recipient's scientific writings are included. At the Chicago meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA) Council, Howard Kendler read from a letter of Arthur Melton inviting a group of the members of the Division of Experimental Psychology to meet with him to give careful thought to the APA. In his letter Melton stated that, "the character of APA has taken a sharp turn toward the AMA-type professional society or guild and away from the scientific and professional society that is concerned with the advancement of a body of knowledge and its technological applications." McKeachie responded to the Melton statement on the floor of Council. Because the issues raised are so crucial to the future of APA, Melton expanded his remarks into an open letter to Melton. In the letter Melton discussed APA's contributions to the science of psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Sheldon "Shep" Harold White, one of developmental psychology's most distinguished scholars, died on March 17, 2005, at the age of 76. He is perhaps best remembered for his sharp intellect, generous spirit, good humor, and warm compassion. Shep's principal work lay in three intermeshed areas: children's learning and cognitive development, social programs and policies, and the history of developmental psychology. Shep White is sorely missed by his family and friends, and countless children have unknowingly benefited from his research, scholarship, and contributions to public policy. In a recent article, Howard H. Kendler (2002) criticized Kenneth B. Clark and the other social scientists who worked in Brown v. Board of Education for polluting their science with value judgments. This article argues that Kendler's critique is misguided because it conflates a policy judgment with a value judgment. In addition, Kendler inconsistently applied his own standard of objectivity when he examined the social science used in Brown. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

David C. McClelland is recognized for his achievements in psychology. This article provides a citation explaining his accomplishments, a biography and a selected bibliography. The citation is as follows: "For leading the vanguard of a new motivational psychology bridging the study of personality and society, beginning forty years ago with methodological innovations and empirical discoveries of lasting significance in pioneering studies of the Achievement Motive and the Achieving Society. By experimental arousal of achievement motivation, he established the validity of using a particular kind of imaginative thought content as its measure. Combining bold vision and practicality, he turned traditional arguments into testable hypotheses. His broad and indelible impact on the social sciences is amplified by seminal writings on personality, the power motive, motivation training—and by the productivity he inspired in his students." At his death in 1988, Frank A. Beach left unpublished a textbook in comparative psychology that he had written in the late 1950s. In it, Beach contrasted comparative behavioral science, as he viewed it, with both ethology and classical human-oriented psychology. He provided a solid background of zoological principles and focused on orienting attitudes. Beach emphasized a functionalist approach to behavior, stressing the role of behavior in the natural lives of animals. It is argued that much of comparative psychology has developed along the lines that Beach advocated at that time but that that development may have been much smoother had the textbook been published. Presents an obituary for Herbert H. Meyer, one of psychology's most distinguished scientist-practitioners. Meyer became interested in industrial psychology after his discharge from the service in 1946. He obtained a part-time position with Detroit Edison, where his work led to his dissertation, which resulted in a new projective and valid test of supervisory judgment. He also worked at the Psychological Corporation in New York City, primarily on executive appraisals, and later joined GE as the founder of a new corporate personnel research function. After 20 years, he sought an academic position, a became the director of the University of South Florida's new doctoral program in industrial and organizational psychology. Meyer continued to teach and lend his wisdom to the program and department even after retirement and election to emeritus status in 1988. During his career, Meyer authored more than 60 publications and was a frequent speaker at professional gatherings worldwide. He was also in high demand as a consultant. He taught for the University of South Florida's program through the spring semester of 2006. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

While maintaining an active career as a scholar, teacher, and administrator, Ronald E. Fox has made important contributions to the field of education in professional psychology. Key among his contributions have been his work in establishing the Association of Psychology Internship Centers, organizing the National Council of Schools of Professional Psychology, and establishing a university-based school of professional psychology as a viable alternative to the graduate education models based in traditional departments of psychology. Fox is, perhaps, most noted for the various educational initiatives for which he has been responsible here at the American Psychological Association (APA). While he was recording secretary and member of the Board of Directors of APA, he was the key, central figure in the creation of the Education Directorate. This new directorate is now firmly established and will shape APA's actions regarding education and training for many years to come. For his commitment and dedication to the field of education in psychology, we honor Ronald E. Fox. He is this year's recipient of the award for Distinguished Education and Training Contributions. Reviews the book, A way of looking at things: Selected papers of Erik H. Erickson 1930-1980 edited by Stephen Schlein (1987). Schlein has done a commendable job of bringing together into one volume a rich body of Erik Erikson's less-known writings. The result is a very lengthy book that lends itself more to leisurely perusal than critical review. Schlein has arranged 47 papers, 12 of which appear in print for the first time, many more of which have been hidden away in obscure publications, into the eight thematic sections of which the book comprises. Everyone broadly interested in the history of psychoanalysis, the evolution of ego psychology, and the role played by Erik H. Erikson in each should enjoy reading this book.
