Military psychology can diverge significantly from traditional psychological practice. Mixed-agency conflicts--those arising when a military psychologist's obligations to individual patients compete with obligations to the Department of Defense or federal regulations--can generate challenging ethical dilemmas. This article explores the notion of mixed agency within the military setting and addresses the most pertinent aspects of the American Psychological Association's (2002) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct related to this ethical challenge. Case vignettes are presented as a means of illustrating key mixed-agency dilemmas and the effective navigation of these conflicts. The article concludes with several recommendations for military psychologists as they work to anticipate and effectively manage ethical dilemmas bearing on their dual identities as officer and health care provider. To assist in setting priorities for long-range planning for the American Psychological Association (APA), the Policy and Planning Board conducted a survey in 1993 that included the general membership, persons involved in APA governance activities, and experts identified by the Education, Practice, Public Interest, and Science Directorates. The survey results identified 32 issues that were considered important by at least 50% of the respondents. These results underscore the commonality of purpose and priorities shared by the many constituencies that comprise the association and point to the need for formal, data-based, long-range planning by the APA as well as by its component parts and other groups associated with organized psychology. The Peace Corps was one of the first to employ psychological tests in choosing volunteers for overseas duty. The Peace Corps feels that the success of its selection system is largely due to the use of these tests along with other procedures. The American Psychological Association played a significant role in helping the Peace Corps man its Selection Division. Perhaps the best evidence of the success of psychological tests for selection is the low rate of Peace Corps volunteers who return before completing their service. But quite obviously this success has been only relative. Whatever the number of volunteers who do not complete their service, it is too high. The author urges the American Psychological to continue with new research in order to improve selection procedures. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

A list is presented of agencies approved for doctoral internship training in clinical psychology by the Education and Training Board with the concurrence of the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association on the recommendation of the Committee on Evaluation. 3 types of internships are indicated: G (relatively broad training and experience with a wide variety of patients), S (intensive and varied experience, but with relatively restricted clinical material), and U (has 2 subclasses—the captive agency limiting its resources to students from a single university, and a group of agencies offering an organized pattern of rotations coordinated with a university training program). 78 agencies are listed in 28 states and the District of Columbia. Subjected data on overlapping affiliation within the 29 divisions of the American Psychological Association for Associates, Members, and Fellows in 1970 to factor analysis. Both phi coefficients and Winer coefficients (i.e., cosines of the angles between 2 group vectors) were used. An interpretation based on a 7-factor solution for Members and Fellows led to the following factors: (a) clinical or psychotherapy, (b) developmental, (c) physiological-experimental, (d) general, (e) consumer-industrial, (f) engineering-military, and (g) educational. A 3-factor solution (combining clinical and developmental; physiological-experimental and general; and engineering-military, consumer-industrial, and educational) suggested 3 superdivisions: general, applied, and developmental. Notes that historians of psychology have found a place within the pages of the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (American Psychological Association, 2009), which includes many of the items recommended to the publications board by the History of Psychology Oversight Committee. The most obvious change includes section 7.10 on Archival Documents and Collections, which describes archival materials and provides a general format for archival/historical references. The Publication Manual also includes a short but essential section on Historical and Interpretive Inaccuracies. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Institutions whose members were leading contributors of articles in the 13 journals published by the American Psychological Association over the last 10 years are identified. Composite productivity scores over the 13 journals are then compared with previous reputational ratings of institutions in psychology (Jones, Lindzey, & Coggeshall, 1982; Roose & Andersen, 1970) and also with previous productivity data (Cox & Catt, 1977; Jones et al., 1982). The overall relationship between reputation and productivity is fairly strong. However, school reputation is differentially related to productivity in specific journals. A relatively strong overall relationship is also noted between past and current productivity, but the degree of stability varies greatly from journal to journal. Schools that showed remarkable shifts over time in productivity and/or reputation are identified. Finally, overall productivity scores are adjusted by faculty size. Small but productive schools tend to emerge in this analysis. These results highlight schools in which a large proportion of the faculty publish in APA journals. Results of the entire study are discussed with regard to advising students in their selection of psychology graduate programs. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) celebrates its 150th anniversary in 1998. The American Psychological Association and the AAAS have been linked institutionally since the early part of this century, and 3 psychologists in particular have been prominent figures in the AAAS at critical times in its history. James McKeen Cattell revived the journal Science, orchestrated its link to the AAAS, and helped strengthen the AAAS's ties to its affiliated organizations; Dael Wolfle was instrumental in transforming the AAAS into a professional organization with a variety of public programs; and William Bevan helped the AAAS to weather the turbulent years of the early 1970s, stressing the importance of scientists' responsibility to society.
