Image quality degradation caused by harmonic leakage was studied for finite amplitude distortion-based harmonic imaging. Various sources of harmonic leakage, including transmit waveform, signal bandwidth, and system nonlinearity, were investigated using both simulations and hydrophone measurements. Effects of harmonic leakage in the presence of sound velocity inhomogeneities were also considered. Results indicated that sidelobe levels of the harmonic beam pattern were directly affected by harmonic leakage when the harmonic signal was obtained by filtering out the fundamental signal. Because sidelobe levels also increase with the bandwidth of the transmitted signal, a trade-off exists between axial resolution and contrast resolution. It is concluded that accurate control of the frequency content of the waveform prior to propagation is necessary to optimize imaging performance of tissue harmonic imaging. The filtering technique was also compared with the pulse inversion technique. It was shown that the pulse inversion technique effectively suppresses harmonic leakage at the cost of imaging frame rate and potential motion artifacts  相似文献

Dry-contact technique for high-resolution ultrasonic imaging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To accomplish a high-resolution ultrasonic imaging without wetting a sample, the efficiency of the dry-contact ultrasonic transmission is discussed. In this study, a dry-contact interface is formed on a sample by inserting a thin film between water and a sample, and the pressure is working on the interface by evacuating the air between the film and the sample. A model of dry-contact ultrasonic transmission is presented to assess the signal loss accompanied with the transmission. From the determination of the signal loss caused by the transmission using various films, it was found that the higher frequency ultrasound is transmitted effectively into the sample by selecting an optimum film, which can keep the displacement continuity between the film and the sample during ultrasonic transmission. Finally, ultrasonic imaging with the sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high lateral resolution was performed on the delamination in a package and the jointing interface of the ball-grid-array package without wetting the packages.  相似文献

Motion artifacts of pulse inversion-based tissue harmonic imaging   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Motion artifacts of the pulse inversion technique were studied for finite amplitude distortion-based harmonic imaging. Motion in both the axial and the lateral directions was considered. Two performance issues were investigated. One is the harmonic signal intensity relative to the fundamental intensity and the other is the potential image quality degradation resulting from spectral leakage. A one-dimensional (1-D) correlation-based correction scheme also was used to compensate for motion artifacts. Results indicated that the tissue harmonic signal is significantly affected by tissue motion. For axial motion, the tissue harmonic intensity decreases much more rapidly than with lateral motion. The fundamental signal increases for both axial and lateral motion. Thus, filtering is still required to remove the fundamental signal, even if the pulse inversion technique is applied. The motion also potentially decreases contrast resolution because of the uncancelled spectral leakage. Also, it was indicated that 1-D motion correction is not adequate if nonaxial motion is present.  相似文献

In synthetic transmit aperture imaging only a few transducer elements are used in every transmission, which limits the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The penetration depth can be increased by using all transmitters in every transmission. In this paper, a method for exciting all transmitters in every transmission and separating them at the receiver is proposed. The coding is done by designing narrow-band linearly frequency modulated signals, which are approximately disjointed in the frequency domain and assigning one waveform to each transmitter. By designing a filterbank consisting of the matched filters corresponding to the excitation waveforms, the different transmitters can be decoded at the receiver. The matched filter of a specific waveform will allow information only from this waveform to pass through, thereby separating it from the other waveforms. This means that all transmitters can be used in every transmission, and the information from the different transmitters can be separated instantaneously. Compared to traditional synthetic transmit aperture (STA) imaging, in which the different transmitters are excited sequentially, more energy is transmitted in every transmission, and a better signal-to-noise-ratio is attained. The method has been tested in simulation, in which the resolution and contrast was compared to a standard synthetic transmit aperture system with a single sinusoid excitation. The resolution and contrast was comparable for the two systems. The method also has been tested using the experimental ultrasound scanner RASMUS. The resolution was evaluated using a string phantom. The method was compared to a conventional STA using both sinusoidal excitation and linear frequency modulated (FM) signals as excitation. The system using the FM signals and the frequency division approach yielded the same performance concerning both axial (of approximately equal to 3 wavelengths) and lateral resolution (of approximately equal to 4.5 wavelengths). A SNR measurement showed an increase in SNR of 6.5 dB compared to the system using the conventional STA method and FM signal excitation.  相似文献

Extended dynamic range (EDR) imaging is a postprocessing technique commonly associated with photography. Multiple images of a scene are recorded by the camera using different shutter settings and are merged into a single higher dynamic range image. Speckle interferometry and holography techniques require a well-modulated intensity signal to extract the phase information, and of these techniques shearography is most sensitive to different object surface reflectivities as it uses self-referencing from a sheared image. In this paper the authors demonstrate real-time EDR imaging in shearography and present experimental results from a difficult surface reflectivity sample: a wooden panel painting containing gold and dark earth color paint.  相似文献

Multiresolution imaging in elastography   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The range of strains that can be imaged by any practical elastographic imaging system is inherently limited, and a performance measure is valuable to evaluate these systems from the signal and noise properties of their output images. Such a measure was previously formulated for systems employing cross-correlation based time-delay estimators through the strain filter. While the strain filter predicts the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR(e)) for each tissue strain in the elastogram and provides valuable insights into the nature of image noise, it understated the effects of image resolution (axial resolution, as determined by the cross-correlation window length) on the noise. In this work, the strain filter is modified to study the strain noise at multiple resolutions. The effects of finite window length on signal decorrelation and on the variance of the strain estimator are investigated. Long-duration windows are preferred for improved sensitivity, dynamic range, and SNR(e). However, in this limit the elastogram is degraded due to poor resolution. The results indicate that for nonzero strain, a window length exists at which the variance of strain estimator attains its minima, and consequently the elastographic sensitivity, dynamic range and SNR(e) are strongly affected by the selected window length. Simulation results corroborate the theoretical results, illustrating the presence of a window length where the strain estimation variance is minimized for a given strain value. Multiresolution elastography, where the strain estimate with the highest SNR(e) obtained by processing the pre- and post-compression waveforms at different window lengths is used to generate a composite elastogram and is proposed to improve elastograms. All the objective elastogram parameters (namely: SNR(e), dynamic range, sensitivity and the average elastographic resolution-defined as the cross-correlation window length) are improved with multiresolution elastography when compared to the traditional method of utilizing a single window length to generate the elastogram. Experimental results using a phantom with a hard inclusion illustrates the improvement in elastogram obtained using multiresolution analysis.  相似文献

Bias and variance errors in motion estimation result from electronic noise, decorrelation, aliasing, and inherent algorithm limitations. Unlike most error sources, decorrelation is coherent over time and has the same power spectrum as the signal. Thus, reducing decorrelation is impossible through frequency domain filtering or simple averaging and must be achieved through other methods. In this paper, we present a novel motion estimator, termed the principal component displacement estimator (PCDE), which takes advantage of the signal separation capabilities of principal component analysis (PCA) to reject decorrelation and noise. Furthermore, PCDE only requires the computation of a single principal component, enabling computational speed that is on the same order of magnitude or faster than the commonly used Loupas algorithm. Unlike prior PCA strategies, PCDE uses complex data to generate motion estimates using only a single principal component. The use of complex echo data is critical because it allows for separation of signal components based on motion, which is revealed through phase changes of the complex principal components. PCDE operates on the assumption that the signal component of interest is also the most energetic component in an ensemble of echo data. This assumption holds in most clinical ultrasound environments. However, in environments where electronic noise SNR is less than 0 dB or in blood flow data for which the wall signal dominates the signal from blood flow, the calculation of more than one PC is required to obtain the signal of interest. We simulated synthetic ultrasound data to assess the performance of PCDE over a wide range of imaging conditions and in the presence of decorrelation and additive noise. Under typical ultrasonic elasticity imaging conditions (0.98 signal correlation, 25 dB SNR, 1 sample shift), PCDE decreased estimation bias by more than 10% and standard deviation by more than 30% compared with the Loupas method and normalized cross-correlation with cosine fitting (NC CF). More modest gains were observed relative to spline-based time delay estimation (sTDE). PCDE was also tested on experimental elastography data. Compressions of approximately 1.5% were applied to a CIRS elastography phantom with embedded 10.4-mm-diameter lesions that had moduli contrasts of -9.2, -5.9, and 12.0 dB. The standard deviation of displacement estimates was reduced by at least 67% in homogeneous regions at 35 to 40 mm in depth with respect to estimates produced by Loupas, NC CF, and sTDE. Greater improvements in CNR and displacement standard deviation were observed at larger depths where speckle decorrelation and other noise sources were more significant.  相似文献

Media thermal stability is characterized by using spin-stand tests for both signal and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) decay. Agreement is shown between vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and spin-stand evaluations of the thermal decay rate dependence on linear density. For an equalized system, there is linear correlation between measured SNR and signal decay rates. Equalization to targets with DC content will result in higher decay  相似文献

This paper describes a method for spatial encoding in synthetic transmit aperture ultrasound imaging. This allows several ultrasonic sources to be active simultaneously. The method is based on transmitting pseudorandom sequences to spatially encode the transmitters. The data can be decoded after only one transmission using the knowledge of the transmitted code sequences as opposed to other spatial encoding techniques, such as Hadamard or Golay encoding. This makes the method less sensitive to motion, and data can be acquired using fewer transmissions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the underlying theory and to test the feasibility in a physical system. The method has been evaluated in simulations using Field II in which the point-spread functions were simulated for different depths for a 7 MHz linear array transducer. A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) simulation also was included in the study in which an improvement in SNR of approximately 1.5 dB was attained compared to the standard synthetic transmit aperture (STA) firing scheme. Considering the amount of energy transmitted, this value is low. A plausible explanation is given that is verified in simulation. The method also was tested in an experimental ultrasound scanner and compared to a synthetic transmit aperture ultrasound imaging scheme using a sinusoidal excitation. The performance of the proposed method was comparable to the reference with respect to axial and lateral resolution, but it displayed poorer contrast with sidelobe levels at approximately - 40 dB compared to the mainlobe.  相似文献

Theoretical studies made in the early 1980's suggest that ultrasonic imaging using correlation technique can overcome some of the drawbacks of classical pulse echography. Indeed by transmitting a continuous coded signal and then compressing it into a short, high resolution pulse at the receiver the total signal to noise ratio (SNR) is improved. The target location is determined by cross correlation of the emitted and the received signal. The band compression allows, by increasing SNR, the retrieval of echo signals buried in the receiver noise. Thus in medical-type echography, where the signal attenuation at fixed depth is proportional to the frequency, the SNR improvement allows the use of higher frequency signals and leads to improved resolution. We report here the results of comparative experimental studies of simple echo B type images as obtained by the classical pulse echo and correlation techniques. Because the optimisation of the coded signal plays a crucial role in the performance of the correlation technique we will also present a comparative study of the performances of the most common codes (m-sequences and complementary series). In particular we shall emphasise the following points: the relative importance of the central lobe as compared to the side lobes of the correlation function, which is directly related to the dynamic of the imaging system, the width of the correlation peak which is directly related to the axial resolution of the system, the facility of the realisation. The merit of B-mode images obtained with the coded signals will be discussed showing that as far as signal modulation is used the best results are obtained with periodic m-sequences  相似文献

The basic principles and theory of phased subarray (PSA) imaging imaging provides the flexibility of reducing the number of front-end hardware channels between that of classical synthetic aperture (CSA) imaging--which uses only one element per firing event--and full-phased array (FPA) imaging-which uses all elements for each firing. The performance of PSA generally ranges between that obtained by CSA and FPA using the same array, and depends on the amount of hardware complexity reduction. For the work described in this paper, we performed FPA, CSA, and PSA imaging of a resolution phantom using both simulated and experimental data from a 3-MHz, 3.2-cm, 128-element capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducer (CMUT) array. The simulated system point responses in the spatial and frequency domains are presented as a means of studying the effects of signal bandwidth, reconstruction filter size, and subsampling rate on the PSA system performance. The PSA and FPA sector-scanned images were reconstructed using the wideband experimental data with 80% fractional bandwidth, with seven 32-element subarrays used for PSA imaging. The measurements on the experimental sector images indicate that, at the transmit focal zone, the PSA method provides a 10% improvement in the 6-dB lateral resolution, and the axial point resolution of PSA imaging is identical to that of FPA imaging. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of PSA image was 58.3 dB, 4.9 dB below that of the FPA image, and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) is reduced by 10%. The simulated and experimental test results presented in this paper validate theoretical expectations and illustrate the flexibility of PSA imaging as a way to exchange SNR and frame rate for simplified front-end hardware.  相似文献

High-frame rate ultrasound imaging is necessary to track fast deformation in ultrasound elasticity imaging, but the image quality may be degraded. Previously, we investigated the performance of strain imaging using numerical models of conventional and ultrafast ultrasound imaging techniques. In this paper, we performed experimental studies to quantitatively evaluate the strain images and elasticity maps obtained using conventional and high frame rate ultrasound imaging methods. The experiments were carried out using point target and tissue mimicking phantoms. The experimental results were compared with the results of numerical simulation. Our experimental studies confirm that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and axial/lateral resolution of the displacement and strain images acquired using high-frame rate ultrasound imaging are slightly lower but comparable with those obtained using conventional imaging. Furthermore, the quality of elasticity images also exhibits similar trends. Thus, high-frame rate ultrasound imaging can be used reliably for static elasticity imaging to capture the internal tissue motion if the frame rate is critical.  相似文献

Tissue motion and elasticity imaging techniques commonly use time delay estimation (TDE) for the assessment of tissue displacement. The performance of these techniques is limited because the signals are corrupted by various factors including electronic noise, quantization, and speckle decorrelation. Speckle decorrelation is caused by changes in the coherent interference among scatterers when the tissue moves relative to the ultrasound beam. In time delay estimation, the effect of noise is usually addressed through the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) term. Decorrelation, often a significant source of error in medical ultrasound, is commonly described in terms of the correlation coefficient. A relationship between the correlation coefficient and the SNR was previously derived in the literature, for identical signals corrupted by uncorrelated random noise. In this paper, we derive the relationship between the peak of the correlation coefficient function and the SNR for two jointly stationary signals when a delay is present between the signals. Recently, an expression for the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) has been derived in the literature for partially decorrelated signals in terms of the SNR and the correlation coefficient. Since the applicability of the CRLB is determined not only by the SNR, but also by the correlation coefficient, it is important to unify the expression for the CRLB for partially correlated signals. In this paper, we derive an expression for the CRLB in term of an equivalent SNR converted from the correlation coefficient using an SNR-p relationship, and show this expression to be equivalent to the expression for CRLB. We also corroborate the validity of the SNR-p expression with a simulation. Using this formulation, correlation measurements can be converted to SNR to obtain a composite SNR. The use of this composite SNR in lieu of those in the CRLB expression in the literature allows the extension of the literature results to the solution of the common TDE problems that involve signal decorrelation.  相似文献

Peak acoustic power limits the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of real-time ultrasound images. For most conventional scan formats, however, the average power is well below heating limits. This means the SNR can be significantly increased using coded excitation. A coded system transmits a broadband, temporally elongated excitation pulse with a finite time-bandwidth product. The received signal must be decoded to produce an imaging pulse with improved SNR resulting from the higher average power in the elongated excitation. Decoding can produce significant range side lobes, however, greatly reducing image quality. All practical coding designs, therefore, represent a trade-off between SNR gain and range side lobes. A specific coding scheme appropriate for synthetic aperture imaging is presented. A 14.5 dB SNR improvement with acceptable range side lobes is demonstrated on a forward-looking imaging system appropriate for intravascular applications.  相似文献

The effect of a 50 per cent efficient between-the-lens shutter which may be considered as one of the typical low efficient shutters is studied from the viewpoint of balanced aberrations. A low efficient between-the-lens shutter which operates circularly produces an effect similar to a shaded aperture in which the amplitude transmittance decreases from the centre of the aperture to its rim. The results of balanced aberrations calculated from the Strehl definition of an exposure image of the point source are compared with both the clear aperture and the shaded aperture. It is shown that the balanced aberrations are affected by a 50 per cent efficient shutter. When the aberration has only primary spherical aberration or primary coma, the shift of best focal setting caused by the aberration is reduced by using a 50 per cent efficient shutter.  相似文献

In this paper, a white-light full-field optical coherence tomography is developed to provide three-dimensional imaging of the development of a mouse embryo with ultrahigh-resolution. Spatial resolution of 1.8 μm×1.12 μm (transverse×axial) is achieved owing to the extremely short coherence length of the light source and optimized compensation of dispersion mismatch. A shot-noise limited detection sensitivity of 80 dB is obtained at an acquisition time of 5 seconds per image. To enable in vivo imaging of the mouse embryo development, a homemade incubator is applied to provide appropriate CO2 concentration, temperature, and humidity. An electronic light shutter is used to control the light source in order to avoid unnecessary exposure to the embryo development when the sample is not being scanned. To demonstrate our method, in vivo time series two-dimensional images of the in vitro fertilization process of mouse oocytes at the germinal vesicles stage are presented.  相似文献

We propose an all point transmit and receive focusing method based on transmit synthetic focusing combined with receive dynamic focusing in a linear array transducer. In the method, on transmit, a virtual source element is assumed to be located at the transmit focal depth of conventional B-mode imaging systems, and transmit synthetic focusing is used in two half planes, one before and the other after the transmit focal depth, using the RF data of each scanline, together with all other relevant RF scanline data previously stored. The proposed new method uses the same data acquisition scheme as the conventional focusing method while maintaining the same frame rate via high-speed signal processing, but it is not suitable for imaging moving objects. It improves upon the lateral resolution and sidelobe level at all imaging depths. Also, it increases the transmit power and image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), due to transmit field synthesis, and extends the image penetration depth as well. Evaluations with simulation and experimental data show much improvement in resolution and SNR at all imaging depths.  相似文献

Adaptive clutter rejection filtering in ultrasonic strain-flow imaging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper introduces strain-flow imaging as a potential new technique for investigating vascular dynamics and tumor biology. The deformation of tissues surrounding pulsatile vessels and the velocity of fluid in the vessel are estimated from the same data set. The success of the approach depends on the performance of a digital filter that must separate echo signal components caused by flow from tissue motion components that vary spatially and temporally. Eigenfilters, which are an important tool for naturally separating signal components adaptively throughout the image, perform very well for this task. The method is examined using two tissue-mimicking flow phantoms that provide stationary and moving clutter associated with pulsatile flow.  相似文献

Motion artifact reduction for IVUS-based thermal strain imaging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thermal strain imaging (TSI) using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) has the potential to identify lipid pools within rupture-prone arterial plaques and serve as a valuable supplement to current IVUS systems in diagnosing acute coronary syndromes. The major challenge for in vivo application of TSI will be cardiac motion, including bulk motion and tissue deformation. Simulations based on an artery model, including a lipid-filled plaque, demonstrate that effective bulk motion compensation can be achieved within a certain motion range using spatial interpolation. We also propose a practical imaging scheme to minimize mechanical strains caused by tissue deformation based on a linear least squares fitting strategy. This scheme was tested on clinical data by artificially superimposing thermal displacements corresponding to different temperature rises. Results suggest a 1-2 degrees C temperature rise is required to detect lipids in an atherosclerotic plaque in vivo.  相似文献
