Three commercially available silane, titanate and aluminate based coupling agents were used to pretreat nano‐SiO2 for the preparation of nylon‐6/nano–SiO2 composites via in situ polymerization. The interphases formed in different composite systems and their influence on material properties were investigated. Results indicated that the interfacial interactions differed between composite systems, whereas rigidity and toughness of composites were all improved by addition of pretreated silicas at an optimal content of 4.3 wt%. The presence of pretreated silicas did not have a distinct influence in the non‐isothermal crystallization behaviour of the nylon matrix. The composites containing pretreated silicas had slightly higher dynamic viscosities and superior storage moduli at high frequency, compared with neat nylon‐6. The nylon 6‐based composite materials containing untreated and surface‐treated TiO2 particles with 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTEOS), as coupling agent were prepared by in situ anionic polymerization of ε‐caprolactam in the presence TiO2 as a filler using the rotational molding technique. The thermal behavior and mechanical properties of the neat nylon 6 and its composites were investigated using various techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), a tensile and flexural test and impact strength. Experimental results revealed that both untreated and surface‐modified TiO2 had distinct influence on the melting temperature (Tm), crystallization temperature (Tc), and degree of crystallinity (αDSC), thermal stability, storage modulus (E′), and loss factor (tan δ), and mechanical properties of nylon 6 matrix. Dynamical mechanical analysis indicated that addition of TiO2 particles into nylon 6 matrix increased both the storage modulus and the glass transition temperature. The corresponding values of nylon 6 composites with modified filler were higher than that of nylon 6 composite with untreated TiO2 particles. Tensile and flexural characteristics of the nylon 6 composites were found to increase while the elongation at break and impact strength with increase in TiO2 concentration relative to neat nylon 6. A series of MC nylon‐6/ polyethylene oxide (PEO) blends were prepared via in situ polymerization. It was found that addition of PEO delayed the polymerization process of caprolactam. The apparent activation energy and pre‐exponential factor increased, indicating that the polymerization reaction became difficult with increasing PEO content. The stress–strain curves of the blends presented strain hardening behavior and increasing elastic deformation stress plateau at low PEO content. Nonisothermal DSC and XRD tests indicated that addition of PEO led to a decrease of the crystallization ability of the nylon‐6 matrix by reducing crystal grain size and crystallinity, whereas the crystallization ability of the PEO phase was improved. No co‐crystal formed between the two phases. PEO with low content only existed as amorphous state, while with increasing PEO content, PEO can crystallize gradually, forming interfibrillar segregation first, and then forming interspherilute segregation of the blend independently. By addition of PEO, the fracture surface of the blend became rough, displaying character of tough fracture. The interface between nylon‐6 phase and PEO phase was diffused, and the nylon‐6 matrix around the PEO particles presented fibrous structure, indicating the good compatibility between them. The toughening mechanism of the blend corresponded to the crazing‐shear banding mechanism. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 55:589–597, 2015. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Nylon 1010 composites filled with two types of surface‐modified SiO2 nanoparticles (RNS and DNS) were prepared by melt blending. The mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated. The influences of the surface‐modified nano‐SiO2 on the thermal stability, crystallization behavior, and microstructure of nylon 1010 were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. And the interfacial interactions between the fillers and polymer matrix were examined using a Fourier transformation infrared spectrometer. It was found that the addition of the surface‐modified nano‐SiO2 had distinct influences on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and crystallization behavior of nylon 1010. RNS and DNS as the fillers had different effects on the mechanical properties of nylon 1010. The composites filled with RNS at a mass fraction of 1–5% showed increased break elongation, Young's modulus, and impact strength but almost unchanged or even slightly lowered tensile strength than the unfilled matrix. The DNS‐filled nylon 1010 composites had obviously decreased tensile strength, whereas the incorporation of DNS also contributed to the increase in the Young's modulus of nylon 1010, but less effective than RNS. Moreover, the nylon 1010 composites had better thermal stability than the neat polymer matrix, and the composites filled with RNS were more thermally stable than those filled with DNS. The difference in the crystallinity of neat nylon 1010 and its composites filled with RNS and DNS was subtle, although the surface‐modified nano‐SiO2 could induce or/and stabilize the γ‐crystalline formation of nylon 1010. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A kind of hydrophilic nano‐SiO2 was applied to poly(ethylene terephthalate)/polyamide‐6 (PA‐6) blends. Melt‐blended composites were prepared at various component ratios and different nano‐SiO2 levels. Mechanical, morphological, dynamic mechanical, and thermal tests were carried out to characterize the properties, morphology, and compatibilization of the composites. Increased impact strength, tensile strength, and modulus were observed by adding nano‐SiO2 particles in the blends. The nano‐SiO2 particles were found to be preferentially dispersed in PA‐6, resulting in an increase of glass transition temperature and crystallization of PA‐6. The mechanism of morphology and properties changes was discussed based on the selective dispersion of nano‐SiO2 particles in the blends. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ball milling and mixing with strong shear force and strike force were applied to get fine dispersion of nano‐SiOx particles in poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) powder. Nano‐SiOx/PPS composites were manufactured by intensive compounding with 3 wt% nano‐SiOx particles. Effects of the ball milling dispersion on crystal behavior and impact strength of nano‐SiOx/PPS nanocomposites were studied. Physical mechanisms of ball milling dispersion were investigated. Evaluations based on both WAXD and DSC indicates that crystallization behavior of nano‐SiOx/heat‐treated PPS (HT‐PPS) nanocomposites was influenced by the ball milling process. Their crystallinity was 25% less while Izod impact strength was 89% better than those of as‐received neat PPS. Increased kinetic energy via ball milling by external work makes nano‐SiOx able to overcome the attraction from itself to prevent agglomeration. Interfacial bonding of two phases between nano‐SiOx and PPS was enhanced by crosslinking in HT‐PPS and reduction in surface tension of interface during ball milling. The bonds allow SiOx to dissipate energy and thus improve PPS impact strength from the addition of nano‐SiOx. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46:820–825, 2006. © 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

To improve the properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) composites, a series of modified PA6 composites was prepared by reaction extrusion. An amorphous PA6 was first obtained by the complexing reaction of Li+ in lithium chloride with amino groups, and then epoxy resins, nano‐SiO2 as well as POE‐g‐MAH were in turn added into the PA6/LiCl system. The effect of different additives on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of PA6 composites was well‐studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical properties tests. The results demonstrated that PA6 was amorphous at 6 phr lithium chloride and a network structure was formed in PA6 matrix in the presence of epoxy resins, thus the mechanical properties of composites greatly were enhanced. However too many nano‐SiO2 particles might impair the tensile strength of PA6 composites. Additionally, a PA6 composite with excellent properties was obtained in the presence of POE‐g‐MAH due to the crystal form change in PA6 matrix and the strong interaction between PA6 and POE‐g‐MAH. The crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and polypropylene copolymer (co‐PP) containing silicon dioxide (SiO2) were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). SiO2 had a heterogenous nucleating effect on iPP, leading to a moderate increase in the crystallization temperature and a decrease in the half crystallization time. However, SiO2 decreased the crystallization temperature and prolonged the half crystallization time of co‐PP. A modified Avrami theory was successfully used to well describe the early stages of nonisothermal crystallization of iPP, co‐PP, and their composites. SiO2 exhibited high nucleation activity for iPP, but showed little nucleation activity for co‐PP and even restrained nucleation. The iPP/SiO2 composite had higher activation energy of crystal growth than iPP, indicating the difficulty of crystal growth of the composite. The co‐PP/SiO2 composite had lower activation energy than co‐PP, indicating the ease of crystal growth of the composite. Crystallization rates of iPP, co‐PP, and their composites depended on the nucleation. Because of its high rate of nucleation, the iPP/SiO2 composite had higher crystallization rate than iPP. Because of its low rate of nucleation, the co‐PP/SiO2 composite had lower crystallization rate than co‐PP. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 1889–1898, 2006  相似文献

Nylon 6/carboxylic acid‐functionalized silica nanoparticles (SiO2‐COOH) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization of caprolactam in the presence of SiO2‐COOH. The aim of this work was to study the effect of carboxylic silica on the properties of the nylon 6 through the interfacial interactions between the SiO2‐COOH nanoparticles and the nylon 6 matrix. For comparison, pure nylon 6, nylon 6/SiO2 (unmodified) and nylon 6/amino‐functionalized SiO2 (SiO2‐NH2) were also prepared via the same method. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to evaluate the structure of SiO2‐COOH and nylon 6/SiO2‐COOH. The results from thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that decomposition temperatures of nylon 6/SiO2‐COOH nanocomposites at the 5 wt % of the total weight loss were higher than the pure nylon 6. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) studies showed that the melting point (Tm) and degree of crystallinity (Xc) of nylon 6/SiO2‐COOH were lower than the pure nylon 6. Mechanical properties results of the nanocomposites showed that nylon 6 with incorporation of SiO2‐COOH had better mechanical properties than that of pure nylon 6, nylon 6/SiO2, and nylon 6/SiO2‐NH2. The morphology of SiO2, SiO2‐NH2, and SiO2‐COOH nanoparticles in nylon 6 matrix was observed using SEM measurements. The results revealed that the dispersion of SiO2‐COOH nanoparticles in nylon 6 matrix was better than SiO2 and SiO2‐NH2 nanoparticles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Poly(lactide)/poly(methyl methacrylate)/silica (PLA/PMMA/SiO2) composites were fabricated using a twin‐screw extruder. Nanosilica particles were incorporated to improve the toughness of the brittle PLA, and a chain extender reagent (Joncryl ADR 4368S) was used to reduce the hydrolysis of the PLA during fabrication. Highly transparent PLA and PMMA were designated to blend to obtain the miscible and transparent blends. To estimate the performance of the PLA/PMMA/SiO2 composites, a series of measurements was conducted, including tensile and Izod impact tests, light transmission and haze measurements, thermomechanical analysis, and isothermal crystallization behavior determination. A chain extender increases the ultimate tensile strength of the PLA/PMMA/SiO2 composites by ~43%, and both a chain extender and nanosilica particles increase Young's modulus and Izod impact strength of the composites. Including 0.5 wt % nanosilica particles increase the elongation at break and Izod impact strength by ~287 and 163%, respectively, compared with those of the neat PLA. On account of the mechanical performances, the optimal blending ratio may be between PLA/PMMA/SiO2 (90/10) and PLA/PMMA/SiO2 (80/20). The total light transmittance of the PLA/PMMA/SiO2 composites reaches as high as 91%, indicating a high miscible PLA/PMMA blend. The haze value of the PLA/PMMA/SiO2 composites is less than 35%. Incorporating nanosilica particles can increase the crystallization sites and crystallinities of the PLA/PMMA/SiO2 composites with a simultaneous decrease of the spherulite dimension. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To improve the crystallization rate and melt strength of polylactide (PLLA), nano‐size amino silica grafted by four‐arm PLLA (4A‐PLLA) with different molecular weight was synthesized. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance proved that 4A‐PLLA had been grafted onto the surface of SiO2 successfully, and the grafting ratios and the degradation behaviors of the grafted SiO2 nanoparticles (g‐SiO2) were studied. When the grafted silica was introduced into PLLA matrix, the crystallization rate and melt strength of composites were found to be improved and the length of grafted chain played an important role. The extension rheology indicated that long grafted 4A‐PLLA on the surface of SiO2 was more efficient in enhancing the elongational viscosity of PLLA, owing to the stronger interactions between the grafted chains and the matrix. The crystallization behavior of ungrafted silica filled composite was similar to that of neat PLA, while g‐SiO2 played a role of nucleating agent. The crystallinities and the crystallization rates of the composites depended on the content of g‐SiO2 and the grafted chain length of 4A‐PLLA, especially the latter. Longer grafted chain acted as nucleation site in the matrix and significantly improved the crystallization behaviors of PLLA. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. This work is focused on a facile route to prepare a new type of nylon 6‐based nanocomposites with both high fracture toughness and high strength. A series of nylon 6‐matrix blends were prepared via melting extrusion by compounding with poly (methyl methacrylate‐co‐butadiene‐co‐styrene) (MBS) or poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methylphenyl siloxane‐co‐styrene) (MSIS) latices as impact modifier and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) as compatibilizer. Layered organic clay was also incorporated into above nylon 6 blends for the reinforcement of materials. Morphology study suggests that the MBS or MSIS latex particles could achieve a mono‐dispersion in nylon 6 matrix with the aid of DGEBA, which improves the compatibilization and an interfacial adhesion between the matrix and the shell of MBS or MSIS. High impact toughness was also obtained but with a corresponding reduction in tensile strength and stiffness. A moderate amount of organic clay as reinforcing agent could gain a desirable balance between the strength, stiffness and toughness of the materials, and tensile strength and stiffness could achieve an improvement. This suggests that the combination of organic clay and core‐shell latex particles is a useful strategy to optimize and enhance the properties of nylon 6. Morphology observation indicates that the layered organic clay was completely exfoliated within nylon 6 matrix. It is found that the core‐shell latex particles and the clay platelets were dispersed individually in nylon 6 matrix, and no clay platelets were present in MBS or MSIS latex particles. So the presence of the clay in nylon 6 matrix does not disturb the latex particles to promote high fracture toughness via particle cavitation and subsequent matrix shear yielding, and therefore, provides maximum reinforcement to the polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The distribution of maleated styrene‐hydrogenated butadiene‐styrene (mSEBS) elastomer and nano‐SiO2 in nylon 6 matrix was controlled by varying the blending procedure. Nano‐SiO2 particles with different surface properties (hydrophilic versus hydrophobic) were adopted to adjust their interactions with other components. Two different structures, separate dispersion of nano‐SiO2 and elastomer particles as well as encapsulation of nano‐SiO2 fillers by the elastomer, were obtained. The structures were confirmed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation. The mechanical measurement results showed that the microstructure and the interactions among the components had dramatic influences on the final mechanical properties, especially Izod fracture toughness, for the ternary nanocomposites. The nanocomposites containing hydrophilic nano‐SiO2 had better mechanical performances compared with the composites filled with hydrophobic SiO2 when they were in the same microstructure. The nanocomposites with separate dispersion structure showed higher stiffness compared with those of encapsulation type. However, the separately dispersed nano‐SiO2 particles restricted the cavitation of elastomer phases that led to low toughening effectiveness. The difference of cavitation intensity for elastomer phase was revealed by SEM investigation on the facture surfaces for the nanocomposites with the two different microstructures. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MC nylon‐6‐b‐polyether amine(PEA)copolymers were synthesized with macroinitiator based on amino‐terminated PEA functionalized with isocyanate via in situ polymerization. It was found that introduction of PEA delayed the polymerization process of caprolactam, resulting in the decrease of molecular weight of the copolymer. With increasing content of PEA, the melting peak started declining and widening, while the crystallinity and crystal grain size decreased, indicating weakening of the crystallization ability of nylon‐6 matrix. The fracture surfaces of the copolymer changed from irregular mosaic to the striation, presenting tough fracture characteristic, and the notched impact strength of the copolymers were improved dramatically. The electrical resistivity of the copolymers was increased by three orders of magnitude, and kept stable with prolonging storage time, indicating a permanently antistatic ability. The improved antistatic mechanism was deduced by the increase of concentration of oxygen atom and C? O group on the surface of the copolymers with increasing PEA content. The water contact angle decreased and surface tension increased, and finally the hydrophilicity of the copolymers was enhanced, resulting in the fairly good antistatic behavior of the copolymers by absorbing moisture from air. Ternary composites of polypropylene (PP), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, and nano‐SiO2, prepared with three different mixing sequences, were studied for dispersion morphology and its effect on the crystallization of PP and the mechanical properties. The mixing sequence produced a significant effect on the dispersion morphology and, thereby, on the mechanical properties of the composites. A two‐step mixing sequence, in which nano‐SiO2 was added in the second step to the PP/PDMS binary system, produced a significant encapsulation of nano‐SiO2 by PDMS, and this, in turn, resulted in the poor modulus and impact strength of the composite. A one‐step mixing sequence of all three components produced a separated dispersion of PDMS and nano‐SiO2 phases in the PP matrix with the occurrence of a fine band of nano‐SiO2 particles at the boundaries of the PDMS domains and the presence of some nano‐SiO2 filler particles inside the PDMS domains. This one‐step mixing sequence produced an improvement in the tensile modulus but a decrease in the impact strength with increasing nano‐SiO2 content. In the third sequence of mixing, which involved a two‐step mixing sequence through the addition of PDMS in the second step to the previously prepared PP/nano‐SiO2 binary system, the morphology of the dispersion showed separately dispersed PDMS and nano‐SiO2 phases with a loose network of nano‐SiO2 particles surrounding the PDMS domains. This latter series of ternary composites had the highest impact strength and exhibited high shear deformation under tensile and impact conditions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization and melting behavior of neat nylon‐6 (PA6) and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)/PA6 composites prepared by simple melt‐compounding was comparatively studied. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results show two crystallization exotherms (TCC, 1 and TCC, 2) for PA6/MWNTs composites instead of a single exotherm (TCC, 1) for the neat matrix. The formation of the higher‐temperature exotherm TCC, 2 is closely related to the addition of MWNTs. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that only the α‐phase crystalline structure is formed upon incorporating MWNTs into PA6 matrix, independently of the cooling rate and annealing conditions. These observations are significantly different from those for PA6 matrix, where the increase in cooling rate or decrease in annealing temperature results in the crystal transformation from α‐phase to γ‐phase. The crystallization behavior of PA6/MWNTs composites is also significantly different from those reported in PA6/nanoclay systems, probably due to the difference in nanofiller geometry between one‐dimensional MWNTs and two‐dimensional nanoclay platelets. The nucleation sites provided by carbon nanotubes seem to be favorable to the formation of thermodynamically stable α‐phase crystals of PA6. The dominant α‐phase crystals in PA6/MWNTs composites may play an important role in the remarkable enhancement of mechanical properties. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The effects of heat treatment on the crystal structure and impact strength of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and nano‐SiOx/ PPS nanocomposites were studied. The molecular weight of heat‐treated neat PPS was increased by 28% due to the crosslinking reaction that changed its crystal morphology. Also, the crystallinity was reduced by 18%, leading to an improvement of the Izod impact strength by 66%. Nano‐SiOx/PPS composites were manufactured by intensive compounding with 3 wt.‐% nano‐SiOx particles treated by an epoxy functional group. Test results showed that the Izod impact strength of nano‐SiOx/heat‐treated PPS composites was 91% better and the crystallinity 27% less compared to the same properties of “as received” neat PPS. Nano‐SiOx has a high specific surface area and a high surface energy; its grafted epoxy group promotes interfacial adhesion with the PPS matrix, hence increasing the Izod impact strength of the nanocomposites.

BACKGROUND: A new processing method for polypropylene–untreated precipitated silica (PP/SiO2) composites based on the incorporation of a second polymer phase of polyamide 6 (PA6) is presented and compared with a more classic one making use of compatibilizers: glycerol monostearate (GMS), ethylene acrylic acid ionomer (IAAZE) and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐graft‐PP). The effects of processing methods and conditions on the microstructure and properties of PP/SiO2 composites prepared by melt compounding are investigated with a view to reduce the size of aggregates of silica from the micrometre to the nanometre scale and to improve the link between filler and matrix. RESULTS: On the one hand, the presence of GMS and IAAZE compatibilizers significantly improves the dispersion of the silica particles. On the other hand, when using a PA6 second phase, the SiO2 particles are dispersed in PA6 nodules. Within these nodules, SiO2 appears dispersed at the nanoscale but with larger particles (‘aggregates’) of about 200 nm. Significant improvements in tensile strength and modulus are obtained using MA‐graft‐PP compatibilizer. An increase in impact strength is observed in the case of GMS compatibilizer. Thermal parameters indicate also that silica plays the role of nucleation agent for PP matrix. All improvements (tensile strength, modulus and impact strength) increase with the addition of compatibilized PA6 second phase. CONCLUSION: By the incorporation of masterbatch of silica in PA6 as a second polymer polar phase, a successful new production method for PP/SiO2 nanocomposites has been developed. Interestingly, this method does not require any (expensive) pre‐treatment of the silica. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Nonisothermal crystallization behavior and crystal morphology of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) composites filled with modified nano‐calcium carbonate (CaCO3) had been investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The modified Avrami equation and Ozawa theory were used to investigate the nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. The particles of nano‐CaCO3, acting as a nucleation agent in composites, accelerated the crystallization rate by decreasing the half‐time of crystallization or increasing the parameters of Zc and K(T). Moreover, the nano‐composite with 2 wt% nano‐CaCO3 exhibited the highest crystallization rate. The Avrami and the Ozawa exponents, n and m of the nano‐composites, were higher than those of neat PTT, suggesting more complicated interaction between molecular chains and the nanoparticles that cause the changes of the nucleation mode and the crystal growth dimension. The effective activation energy calculated from the Friedman formula was reduced as nano‐CaCO3 content increased, suggesting that the nano‐CaCO3 made the molecular chains of PTT easier to crystallize during the nonisothermal crystallization process. The optical micrographs showed that much smaller or less perfect crystals were formed in composites because of the presence of the nano‐CaCO3 particles. POLYM. Microstructural characterization of nylon 6/short glass fiber (SGF) and nylon 6/polyacrolonitrile based carbon fibers (PAN‐CFs) of 10 to 40 wt% has been performed by positron lifetime technique (PLT). The positron lifetime parameters viz., o‐Ps lifetime (τ3), o‐Ps intensity (I3), and fractional free volume (Fv) of nylon 6/SGF and nylon 6/PAN‐CF composites are correlated with the mechanical properties viz., tensile strength and Young's modulus. The Fv shows negative deviation with the reinforcement of 10 to 40 wt% of PAN‐CF and show positive deviation in nylon 6/SGF from the linear additivity relation. The negative deviation in nylon 6/PAN‐CF composite suggests the induced molecular packing due to the chemical interaction between the polymeric chains of nylon 6 and PAN‐CF. The positive deviation in nylon 6/SGF composite indicates the formation of interface between the polymeric chains of nylon 6 and SGF. The increased crystallinity of nylon 6/SGF and nylon 6/PAN‐CF composites shows the improved mechanical properties of the composites. The hydrodynamic interaction parameter (h), which shows more negative values in nylon 6/SGF than nylon 6/PAN‐CF composites. However, the extent of chemical interaction in nylon 6/SGF is less compare to nylon 6/PAN‐CF composites. This is evident from Fourier transform infrared spectrometry studies. POLYM. ENG.
