Low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)/polyethylene–octylene elastomer (POE) foams with different composition ratios (POE, cross‐linking agent, and blowing agent) were produced by using the continuous cross‐linking and foaming process to improve the rebound resilience of chemical cross‐linked LDPE foams. The effects of POE, cross‐linking agent, and foaming agent on rebound resilience of LDPE/POE foams were investigated by using a rebound test, cross‐linking degree experiment, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that the rebound resilience of LDPE was improved by increasing the flexibility of cell walls and the cell density and decreasing the foam density. Compared with the rebound resilience of pure LDPE (33%), the proposed LDPE/POE foams could meet the requirements of gymnastics mats for high rebound resilience (55%). POLYM. ENG. A reduction in the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) was found for polyolefins chemically crosslinked by peroxide. This tendency, which was observed for low‐density and high‐density polyethylenes, was also validated for their blends with Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymer. It is proposed that the constrained crystallization process, as a result of a restriction imposed on the chain packing by the chemical crosslinks, results in an increasing net free volume in the amorphous phase and hence reduces Tg. The Tg depression becomes greater with increasing crosslink density, whereas at the same time, the degree of crystallinity and consequently the density of the system decreases with an increase in the peroxide content. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the heat‐shrinkage property in polymer was induced by first compounding low‐density polyethylene/poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) (LDPE/EVA) blends with various amounts of peroxide in a twin‐screw extruder at about 130°C. The resulting granules were molded to shape and chemically crosslinked by compression molding. A process of heating–stretching–cooling was then performed on the samples while on a tensile machine. Shrinkability and effective parameters were also investigated using thermal mechanical analysis. The results showed that the gel fraction was higher for the sample of higher EVA content with the same amount of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). A decrease in the melting point and heat of fusion (ΔHf), as determined from DSC, was observed with an increase in the DCP content. Studies on the heat shrinkability of the samples showed that samples stretched above the melting point had a higher shrinkage temperature than those stretched around the crystal transition temperature. The results showed that by increasing the peroxide content, the shrinkage temperature was decreased. These could be attributed to the formation of new spherulites as well as changes in the amount and the size of crystals. Furthermore, in samples elongated at 120°C (above the melting point), the rate of stretching had no effect on the shrinkage temperature. The results showed that the extent of strain had no effect on the temperature of shrinkage, but rather on the ultimate shrinkage value. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer alloys and blends, whose major advantage is the potential of achieving a range of physical and mechanical properties, have continued to be a subject of interest over recent years. Addition of a block or graft copolymer, with chemically similar segments to those involved in the polymer blend considered, led to a variety of desirable properties. The copolymer added to the blend functioned to promote a homogeneous dispersion of the constituent phases and to enhance their mutual adhesion. Such agents that enable better dispersion in polymer blends are known as compatibilizers. In this study an attempt has been made to improve the compatibility in a polymer blend composed of two normally incompatible constituents, LDPE and PA6, by addition of a compatibilizer. The compatibilizer agent, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), was added to the polymer blend in ratios of 1, 5, and 10% by using a twin‐screw extruder. The effect of EVA on the crystallization of the polymer constituents was observed through DSC examinations. Furthermore, the control sample and all three blends of LDPE/PA6/EVA were subjected to examinations to obtain their yield and tensile strengths, elasticity modulus, percentage elongation, izod impact strength, hardness, and melt flow index. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Five fungi including Aspergillus niger, Penicilium pinophilum, Chaetoomium globsum, Gliocladium virens and Aureobasium pullulans were used to investigate the biodegradation of starch‐based elastomers: polyethylene‐octene elastomer (POE)/starch and grafted POE‐g‐MAH/starch copolymer blends. The viability of the composite spore suspensions were measured before estimating the fungal growth on the surface of specimens. The weight loss, morphology and mechanical properties of the blended specimens were measured using scanning electron microscopy and a mechanical properties tester after 28 days of culturing. The spore suspension in the experiment showed good viability. Pure POE and POE‐g‐MAH did not allow significant fungal growth. Pure POE did not lose weight or have a change in tensile strength, but pure POE‐g‐MAH lost about 0.07% of its weight with a slight reduction in tensile strength during culture period. There was heavy growth on the surface of POE/starch and POE‐g‐MAH/starch blends after 28 days of culturing. The weight loss of POE/starch and POE‐g‐MAH/starch blends increased with increasing starch content. POE‐g‐MAH/starch blends tended to lose more weight than POE/starch blends. After biodegradation, the surface of POE/starch and POE‐g‐MAH/starch blends became rough with many holes and cracks, indicating that the films were eroded by the fungi. Tensile strength of POE/starch and POE‐g‐MAH/starch blends decreased after culturing because of microbial attack. On the contrary, elongation at break of POE‐g‐MAH/starch blends increased after biodegradation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 114:3574–3584, 2009  相似文献

The crystallization of a series of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)‐ and linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)‐rich blends was examined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC analysis after continuous slow cooling showed a broadening of the LLDPE melt peak and subsequent increase in the area of a second lower‐temperature peak with increasing concentration of LDPE. Melt endotherms following stepwise crystallization (thermal fractionation) detailed the effect of the addition of LDPE to LLDPE, showing a nonlinear broadening in the melting distribution of lamellae, across the temperature range 80–140°C, with increasing concentration of LDPE. An increase in the population of crystallites melting in the region between 110 and 120°C, a region where as a pure component LDPE does not melt, was observed. A decrease in the crystallite population over the temperature range where LDPE exhibits its primary melting peaks (90–110°C) was noted, indicating that a proportion of the lamellae in this temperature range (attributed to either LDPE or LLDPE) were shifted to a higher melt temperature. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Melt blending of polylactide and linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) was performed in an effort to toughen polylactide. In addition, two model polylactide‐polyethylene (PLLA‐PE) block copolymers were investigated as compatibilizers. The LLDPE particle size and the impact resistance of binary and ternary blends were measured to determine the extent of compatibilization. For the amorphous polylactide (PLA), toughening was achieved only when a PLLA‐PE block copolymer was used as a compatibilizer. For the semicrystalline polylactide (PLLA), toughening was achieved in the absence of block copolymer. To decrease the variability in the impact resistance of the PLLA/LLDPE binary blend, as little as 0.5 wt % of a PLLA–;PE block copolymer was effective. The differences that were seen between the PLA and PLLA binary blends were investigated with adhesion testing. The semicrystalline PLLA did show significantly better adhesion to the LLDPE. We propose that tacticty effects on the entanglement molecular weight or miscibility of polylactide allow for the improved adhesion between the PLLA and LLDPE. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Adhesion of a Ziegler–Natta catalyzed ethylene copolymer (ZNPE) to polypropylene (PP) was studied by measuring the delamination toughness G of coextruded microlayers by using the T‐peel test. Low values of G compared to a homogeneous copolymer with approximately the same short chain branch (SCB) content were attributed to an amorphous interfacial layer of low molecular weight, highly branched ZNPE fractions. Blending ZNPE with a homogeneous metallocene catalyzed copolymer (mPE) increased G. In this regard, mPE with higher SCB content was more effective than mPE with slightly lower SCB content. The ZNPE interface was mimicked by microlayering ZNPE and ZNPE blends with polystyrene from which the ZNPE layers were easily separated without damage to the surface. Examination with atomic force microscopy revealed a soft coating about 8 nm thick on the surface of the ZNPE layer. Blending with mPE reduced or eliminated the amorphous interfacial layer. It was proposed that mPE increased miscibility of low molecular weight, highly branched fractions of ZNPE and prevented their segregation at the interface. After blending with mPE eliminated the interfacial layer, G increased to a value comparable to that of a homogeneous copolymer with about the same SCB content as ZNPE bulk chains. The increase in G was attributed to epitaxial crystallization of the ethylene copolymer in the absence of an amorphous interfacial layer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Formulations of chemically crosslinked and radiation‐crosslinked low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) containing an intumescent flame retardant such as ammonium polyphosphate were prepared. The influence of blending LDPE with a poly(ethylene vinyl acetate) copolymer (EVA) and the effects of various coadditives, including polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PEgMA), vinyl silane with boric acid, and talc, on the mechanical and thermal properties were investigated. Chemical crosslinking by dicumyl peroxide and crosslinking by ionizing radiation from an electron‐beam accelerator were both used and compared. Improved mechanical properties were observed by the partial replacement of LDPE with EVA. Similar mechanical or thermal properties were observed with coadditives such as PEgMA and vinyl silane with boric acid. The addition of a small amount of talc improved the tensile strength of the formulations. All crosslinked formulations showed good thermal stability on the basis of the retention of mechanical properties after thermal aging for 168 h at 135°C and a hot‐set test. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of chlorinated polyethylene rubber (CM)/ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) blends were prepared at different blending ratio. The blends were foamed by compression molding and azodicarbonamide (AZDC) was used as chemical blowing agent. Cure characteristics were researched first, and then the morphology and physical properties were investigated. It was found that neat CM foams presented a series of problems such as low hardness and high shrinkage ratio. To solve the above problems, some EVA was added into CM matrix. And the results indicated that these aforementioned defects were improved after the addition of EVA component. Tensile strength increased first and then fell, and morphology properties of CM/EVA blends were also investigated. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2012. © 2011 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

This paper studies the morphology and tensile properties of nanocomposite foams of blends of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA). Preparations of LDPE/EVA nanocomposites were conducted in an internal mixer, and then samples were foamed via a batch foaming method. Morphology of the nanocomposite blends and nanocomposite foams was studied by X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Morphological observations showed that nanoparticle dispersion in the polymeric matrix was affected by the blend ratio in a way such that EVA‐rich samples had a better dispersion of nanoclay than LDPE‐rich ones. In addition, the tensile properties of the nanocomposite foams were related to different variables such as blend ratio, clay content, and foam density. J. VINYL ADDIT. Polyethylene‐octene elastomer (POE)/organoclay nanocomposite was prepared by melt mixing of the POE with an organoclay (Cloisite 20A) in an internal mixer, using poly[ethylene‐co‐(methyl acrylate)‐co‐(glycidyl methacrylate)] copolymer (E‐MG‐GMA) as a compatibilizer. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that an intercalated nanocomposite was formed and the silicate layers of the clay were uniformly dispersed at a nanometre scale in the POE matrix. The nanocomposite exhibited greatly enhanced tensile and dynamic mechanical properties compared with the POE/clay composite without the compatibilizer. The POE/E‐MA‐GMA/clay nanocomposite was used to produce foams by a batch process in an autoclave, with supercritical carbon dioxide as a foaming agent. The nanocomposite produced a microcellular foam with average cell size as small as 3.4 µm and cell density as high as 2 × 1011 cells cm?3. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

It is well known that the addition of a small amount of high‐pressure low‐density polyethylene (HP‐LDPE) to linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) can improve the optical properties of LLDPE, and LLDPE/HP‐LDPE blend is widely applied to various uses in the field of film. The optical haziness of polyethylene blown films, as a result of surface irregularities, is thought to be as a consequence of the different crystallization mechanisms. However, not much effort has been directed toward understanding the effect of HP‐LDPE blending on the overall crystallization kinetics (k) of LLDPE including nucleation rate (n) and crystal lateral growth rate (v). In this study, we investigated the effect of blending 20% HP‐LDPE on the crystallization kinetics of LLDPE polymerized by Ziegler‐Natta catalyst with comonomer of 1‐butene. Furthermore, by combining depolarized light intensity measurement (DLIM) and small‐angle laser light scattering (SALLS), we have established a methodology to estimate the lateral growth rate at lower crystallization temperatures, in which direct measurement of lateral growth by polarized optical microscopy (POM) is impossible due to the formation of extremely small spherulites. This investigation revealed that HP‐LDPE blending leads to enhanced nucleation rate, reduced crystal lateral growth rate, and a slight increase in the overall crystallization kinetics of pure LLDPE. From the estimated crystal lateral growth rate, it was found that the suppression in v from HP‐LDPE blending is larger at lower temperatures than at higher temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinked polyethylene foam is widely used in packaging and as an insulation material. Finely ground waste of such crosslinked foam mesh size 7 or particle size less than 2815 μm is used as a filler in high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) of two different grades (7.5 and 21 MFI). Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of filled composites is studied experimentally. Waste foam powder concentration was varied up to 40% by weight basis. Impact strength of base HDPE increased by a factor of six. The overall changes in mechanical properties are similar to the crosslinking effect. It is believed that waste foam particles act as a point of entanglement with different chains of polyethylene. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 110–114, 2004  相似文献

To produce polyethylene–octene elastomer foams with compression molding, the influences of various activators on the thermal decomposition temperature of the chemical blowing agent azodicarbonamide were investigated with thermogravimetric analysis, which showed that the decomposition temperature of azodicarbonamide could be effectively reduced by the addition of zinc oxide/zinc stearate. The results of a moving die rheometer suggested that the vulcanization and blowing curves were influenced by the content of azodicarbonamide and temperature, and the optimum temperature was about 170°C. The morphology and physical properties of the microcellular polyethylene–octene elastomer were studied. The results indicated that the amount of azodicarbonamide and the processing temperature played important roles in the cell morphology and physical properties of polyethylene–octene elastomer foams. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared with different weight compositions with a plasticorder at 240°C at a rotor speed of 64 rpm for 10 min. The physicomechanical properties of the prepared blends were investigated with special reference to the effects of the blend ratio. Graft copolymers, that is, LDPE‐grafted acrylic acid and LDPE‐grafted acrylonitrile, were prepared with γ‐irradiation. The copolymers were melt‐mixed in various contents (i.e., 3, 5, 7, and 9 phr) with a LDPE/PET blend with a weight ratio of 75/25 and used as compatibilizers. The effect of the compatibilizer contents on the physicomechanical properties and equilibrium swelling of the binary blend was investigated. With an increase in the compatibilizer content up to 7 phr, the blend showed an improvement in the physicomechanical properties and reduced equilibrium swelling in comparison with the uncompatibilized one. The addition of a compatibilizer beyond 7 phr did not improve the blend properties any further. The efficiency of the compatibilizers (7 phr) was also evaluated by studies of the phase morphology (scanning electron microscopy) and thermal properties (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, grafting of acrylic acid (AA) onto metallocene‐based polyethylene‐octene elastomer (POE) was investigated by using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. Grafted product was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Both the grafting percentage and the gel yield, at equilibrium, were higher for POE containing lower degree of comonomer content. In all cases, the crosslinking reaction was accompanied by the predominant graft reaction due to the competition of POE macroradical and excited AA. From the result of DSC and X‐ray characterizations, it was found that the change of crystallinity is slight when the gel is removed from POE‐g‐AA copolymers. It was also proven that the effect of gel formation on the properties of the copolymer could be neglected because of the low gel yield. So, the graft method proposed in this article can produce low gel yield copolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 2905–2912, 2002  相似文献

In this work, polymer films of low density polyethylene and ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymers containing two types of antifog additives (nonionic surfactants) were exposed to two simulated horticultural greenhouse environments, reproducing hot and cold climate conditions. The evolution of the antifog effect was visually observed and that of the additive concentration measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). All the films studied showed good antifog properties, but in all cases, the duration of the antifog effect was longer in the hot‐climate test. From the FTIR, we can conclude that the additives studied showed a low migration rate and, therefore, when the antifog effect is lost, important quantities of the additive remain in the bulk. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dickite particles were exfoliated by the thermal decomposition of molecular urea in the interlayer of dickite. The exfoliated dickite (ED) was composed with linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) to prepare a novel LLDPE/dickite nanocomposite (LDN‐5). X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to evaluate the exfoliation effect. FTIR spectra showed that the inner‐surface hydroxyls of dickite decreased because of the sufficient exfoliation of the dickite layers. The 001 diffraction of dickite in the XRD pattern almost disappeared after exfoliation; this indicated the random orientation of dickite platelets. SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed the effective thermal decomposition of the interlamellar molecular urea ED layers, which resulted in smaller particle sizes and better dispersions of dickite in the resulting LLDPE/dickite composite. The microstructure of LDN‐5 showed that most of the dickite platelets were exfoliated and homogeneously dispersed in the LLDPE; this led to increases in the anticorrosion properties and thermal stabilities of LDN‐5. The results of salt‐spray tests illustrated that the corrosion rate of the iron coupon decreased from 23% (LLDPE packing) to 0.4% (LDN‐5 packing). Moreover, the thermal degradation temperature corresponding to a mass loss of 10% increased from 330°C (pure LLDPE) to 379°C (LDN‐5). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

In this study, nylon 12 (5–25 wt %) was melt blended with a supramolecular thermally repairable thermoplastic elastomer (ATA‐POE), which was generated by crosslinking of maleated polyethylene‐octene elastomer (mPOE) with 3‐amino‐1,2,4‐triazole (ATA), in an internal mixer. The effect of nylon 12 content on the phase morphology, thermomechanical properties, and thermally triggered scratch repairing effects of the ATA‐POE/nylon 12 blends was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that nylon 12 formed a dispersed phase with submicron scale in a continuous ATA‐POE phase. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed that there are extensive hydrogen bonding interactions between the ATA‐POE and nylon 12 in the blends, which was manifested by a decrease in the melting temperature of each polymer component. Tensile and dynamic mechanical test showed that tensile modulus increased with increasing nylon 12 contents in the blend with maintaining fairly high elastic recoverability. Furthermore, the blends containing up to 20 wt % of nylon 12 showed good scratch repairing effects when they are heated above melting temperature of the ATA‐POE phase in the blend. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
