In this paper main optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics are presented of a newly synthesised material MgO doped with terbium (Tb) developed at the Institute of Nuclear Science, Vinca. A thermally stimulated emission spectrum showed the characteristic lines of Tb3+ in a wide range of wavelengths. The TL sensitivity of the main TL glow peak at 315 degrees C is 1.7 times higher than the TL of Al2O3:C. The highest OSL sensitivity was obtained under green lamp (500-570 nm) stimulation. The fast component in the OSL decay curve is 2.4 times faster than Al2O3:C. The OSL signal is linear with dose up to 10 Gy. The lower limit of detection was found to be 100 microGy. These first results show that the newly synthesised material has some promising properties for the application in radiation dosimetry.  相似文献

Diamond is a material with extreme physical properties. Its radiation hardness, chemical inertness and tissue equivalence qualify it as an ideal material for radiation dosimetry. In the present work, the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of a 10 microm thick CVD diamond (polycrystalline diamond films prepared by chemical vapor deposition) film were studied in order to test its performance as a beta radiation dosemeter. The TL response is composed of four main TL glow peaks; two of these are in the range of 150-200 degrees C and two additional peaks in the 250-400 degrees C temperature range. The integrated TL as a function of radiation dose is linear up to 100 Gy and increases with increasing dose exposure. The dose dependence of the integrated OSL exhibits a similar behavior. The observed OSL/TL behavior for the CVD diamond film clearly demonstrate its capability for applications in radiation dosimetry with special relevance in medical dosimetry owing to the diamond's intrinsic material properties.  相似文献

The dose ranges typical for radiation oncology and nuclear accident dosimetry are on the order of 2-70 Gy and 0.1-5 Gy, respectively. In terms of solid-state passive dosimetry, thermoluminescent (TL) materials historically have been used extensively for these two applications, with silver-halide, leuco-dye and BaFBr:Eu-based films being used on a more limited basis than TL for radiation oncology. This present work provides results on the performance of a film based on an aluminum oxide, Al(2)O(3):C, for these dosimetry applications, using the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) readout method. There have been few investigations of Al(2)O(3):C performance at radiation oncology and nuclear accident dose levels, and these have included minimal dosimetric and environmental effects information. Based on investigations already published, the authors of this present study determined that overall improvements over film and TLDs for this Al(2)O(3):C OSL technology at radiation oncology and nuclear accident dose levels may include (1) a more tissue-equivalent response to photons compared to X-ray film, (2) higher sensitivity, (3) ability to reread dosemeters and (4) diagnostic capability using small-area imaging. The results of the present investigation indicate that additional favourable performance characteristics for the Al(2)O(3):C dosemeter are a wide dynamic range (0.001-100 Gy), a response insensitive to temperature and moisture over a wide range, negligible dose rate dependence, and minimal change in post-irradiation response. As a radiation detection medium, this OSL phosphor offers an assortment of dosimetry properties that will permit it to compete with current radiation detection technologies such as silver-halide, leuco-dye and photostimulable-phosphor-based films, as well as TLDs.  相似文献

The potentialities of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) for personal dosimetry of ionising radiation have stimulated the search for new synthetic materials with good dosimetric properties. The sensitivity of two new OSL materials KMgF3 and NaMgF3 doped with Ce3+ ions has been evaluated and found to be of the same order of magnitude as that of Al2O3:C. Several other characteristics have also been investigated. Promising results for KMgF3:Ce are the high sensitivity and the low fading. However, this material suffers from a high self-dose due to the presence of 40K. NaMgF5:Ce is sensitive as well but shows strong fading. Interesting information on the mechanism has been obtained by correlating the signals of OSL and TL. Furthermore, the different bleachabilities under blue LED illumination of the strongly overlapping glow peaks allowed the extraction of one single peak for KMgF3:Ce3+. The results demonstrate new possibilities offered by the combination of TL and OSL.  相似文献

The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) following irradiation by beta and alpha particles was investigated by the measurement of the excitation and emission spectra of OSL and comparison with thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics. Measurements were also carried out on nominally pure LiF monocrystals. The preferential excitation of OSL compared to TL following high-ionisation density (HID) alpha irradiation is naturally explained via the identification of OSL with the 'two-hit' F2 or F3+ centre, whereas the major component of composite TL glow peak 5 is believed to arise from a 'one-hit' complex defect. This discovery allows near-total discrimination between HID radiation and low-ionisation density radiation and may have significant potential in mixed-field radiation dosimetry.  相似文献

Strong optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), stimulated by blue light, has been observed, for the first time, in natural calcium fluoride (CaF(2)) phosphor, used as thermoluminescence dosemeters. Traps responsible for all three thermoluminescence (TL) peaks appearing upto 300 degrees C, i.e. 126, 196 and 264 degrees C, were observed to contribute to the blue light stimulated luminescence (BLSL) in CaF(2). When the areas under the respective curves (BLSL and TL) were measured, the BLSL measured at room temperature was found to be approximately 1.8 times the TL output of the dosimetry peak that appeared at approximately 264 degrees C. However, when measured after thermally annealing the first two TL peaks, the BLSL signal was found to be 0.26 times the TL output of the dosimetry peak at 264 degrees C. This paper describes the characteristics of the BLSL signal using linearly modulated OSL after subjecting the phosphor to different annealing treatments. Feasibility studies to assess the usefulness of BLSL in CaF(2) for environmental radiation monitoring are also discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents an overview of recent results on ionisation density dependence of the thermally stimulated luminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signals from Al2O3:C, with emphasis on the sensitivity, efficiency, shape of the TL/OSL curves and the emission spectrum. High-ionisation densities are created uniformly by accumulated high doses of low-linear energy transfer radiation (gamma, beta, X rays) or non-uniformly in heavy charged particle tracks, even at low fluences, as in the case of space radiation fields. Significant deep trap filling, which occurs at these high-ionisation densities, ultimately results in changes in the concentration of recombination centres (F+-centres) and, consequently, in sensitivity changes and other effects. An OSL emission band at 335 nm has been observed in addition to the main F-centre luminescence band, and the relative intensities of these bands have been observed to be dependent on the ionisation density. The implications of these results and open issues are discussed.  相似文献

This paper analyses the influence of the Cerenkov radiation and other noise sources, the so-called stem effect, on radioluminescence (RL) signals generated in optical fibre Al2O3:C dosemeters used in medical dosimetry. The optical fibre dosemeter consists of a sensitive Al2O3:C crystal coupled to an optical fibre cable that carries the RL and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signals generated in the Al2O3:C crystal. During irradiation of the dosemeter, the real-time dose rate can be determined from the RL signal and after irradiation the total dose absorbed is determined from the OSL signal stimulated using a focused green solid-state laser. In particular, the components of the stem effect generated in the fibres were analysed to determine their impact on the RL signal.  相似文献

The thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of SrSO4:Eu (0.1 mol%) powder sample were studied. The TL and OSL emission spectrum are measured after irradiation (absorbed dose 100 Gy) of 90Sr source; both of them showed that the emission wavelength is at approximately 375 nm, which indicates that TL and OSL have the same luminescence centres, and the luminescence comes from transitions between the energy levels of Eu2+. The TL glow curves and OSL decay curves illustrate that there is only one main TL peak but two main components in OSL curves. By a comparative study of TL and OSL it is concluded that OSL traps are different from TL traps. The TL and OSL dose responses of SrSO4:Eu phosphor were measured, and it showed that phosphor has similar dose responses for OSL and TL.  相似文献

The characteristics of thermoluminescence (TL) and optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) in undoped alpha-Al2O3 single crystals were studied. The TL glow curves of the crystal samples irradiated at various dose levels were measured by Ris? TL/OSL-DA-15B/C reader with U-340 or 7-59 filters at different heating rates. The glow peaks measured with U-340 at approximately 210 degrees C of the undoped alpha-Al2O3 can be well fitted by first-order kinetic equation whereas the glow peaks measured with 7-59 filters are a composite of two first-order glow peaks. It indicates that the TL glow curves are dependent upon the filter used in the reader that is related to the emission spectra of luminescence materials. The OSL were also measured and fitted by two exponential functions to get the luminescence intensities. The TL and OSL dose responses of the undoped alpha-Al2O3 crystal were obtained in the dose range of 0.12-248 Gy and fitted by the composite action dose-response function to get nonlinear characteristic parameters. The TL and OSL dose responses are linear-sublinear.  相似文献

This paper presents an overview of some very recent developments in optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry using aluminium oxide (Al(2)O(3):C), with special emphasis given to the work of the research group at Oklahoma State University. Some of the advances are: (i) the development of a real-time optical fibre system for in vivo dosimetry applied to radiotherapy; (ii) the development of a fibre dosimetry system for remote detection of radiological contaminants in soil; (iii) the characterisation of Al(2)O(3):C in heavy charged particle fields and the study of ionisation density dependence of the OSL from Al(2)O(3):C; and (iv) fast and separate assessment of beta and gamma components of the natural dose rate in natural sediments. These achievements highlight the versatility of the OSL technique associated with the high-sensitivity of Al(2)O(3):C for the development of new dosimetry applications.  相似文献

The main problem in selecting suitable thermoluminescent (TL) materials for fast-neutron dosimetry is finding a material that is both tissue-equivalent and not damaged upon heating. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) avoids the need to heat the materials and allows the use of materials with a high content of hydrogen (responsible for 90% of the absorbed dose of fast-neutrons). The choice of studying the ammonium salts for their OSL properties was based on the calculation of their neutron kerma factor. A constant ratio of an ammonium salt's kerma coefficients to the tissue's kerma coefficients (in the fast-neutron range) is a prerequisite for a similar energy response to neutrons, i.e. tissue equivalency. The salts studied are NH4Br and (NH4)2SiF6 both doped with Tl+. This paper describes the OSL properties of Tl(+)-doped NH4Br and (NH4)2SiF6 after exposure to 14.5 MeV neutrons to explore their potential for developing new, tissue-equivalent OSL materials suitable for fast-neutron dosimetry. The relative neutron sensitivity, k, defined as the ratio of the sensitivity of the material to neutrons to its sensitivity to gamma rays, has been determined for 14.5 MeV neutrons and varies between k = 0.15 and k = 0.5. The latter value is a factor 2.5 higher than that found for known TL materials (k < or = 0.2). A drawback of these materials is the fast fading of the OSL signal.  相似文献

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) has become the technique of choice in many areas of dosimetry. Natural materials like topaz are available in large quantities in Brazil and other countries. They have been studied to investigate the possibility of use its thermoluminescence (TL) properties for dosimetric applications. In this work, we investigate the possibility of utilising the OSL properties of natural Brazilian topaz in dosimetry. Bulk topaz samples were exposed to doses up to 100 Gy of beta radiation and the integrated OSL as a function of the dose showed linear behaviour. The fading occurs in the first 20 min after irradiation but it is <6% of the integrated OSL measured shortly after exposure. We conclude that natural colourless topaz is a very suitable phosphor for OSL dosimetry.  相似文献

Thermal treatment before optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurement is an important step in all widely accepted OSL dating procedures used with quartz. This is a major constraint on the design of a portable luminescence instrument for estimating ages in the field. Preliminary experiments show that using a standard dating protocol without heating caused a 30-50% underestimation of equivalent dose. This underestimate arises mainly from OSL derived from the 110 degrees C thermoluminescence (TL) trap; because of the thermal instability of this trap, this OSL contribution is only present in unheated laboratory-regenerated signals, but not in the natural signal. An alternative to thermal pre-treatment is investigated, based on the mathematical separation of the stable dosimetry OSL signal from the total OSL; the latter is the sum of signals from several traps, including the 110 degrees C TL trap. Our results show consistency with dose estimates obtained using a standard measurement protocol including pre-heating.  相似文献

Results of a study of optically and thermally stimulated luminescence (OSL and TL) of thin nanostructured aluminum oxide coatings obtained with evaporation of the target by a pulsed electron beam and deposited on quartz glass, Al, steel, Cu, Ta, and graphite wafers are presented. It follows from data of X-ray phase analysis that the obtained Al2O3 layers have an amorphous nanocrystal structure with different contents of the γ phase depending on the geometry of the wafer location on evaporation and annealing temperature of the samples. It is established that the material of the wafer and the ratio of the amorphous and γ phase in Al2O3 layers affect the yields of OSL and TL. Annealing at up to 970 K results in an increase of γ-phase concentration and OSL and TL responses. It was found that the yields of OSL and TL for the most emission-effective coating samples are comparable with those for the detectors on the basis of anion-defective corundum. The dose-dependence for β radiation, which was linear in the range 20–5000 mGy, was investigated.  相似文献

Luminescence and optical features of chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond have been studied in view of the potential application of this material in ionising radiation dosimetry field. For this purpose, thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques have been used. A large amount of work has emphasised the excellent dosimetric properties of CVD diamond. Nevertheless, TSL measurements showed that after irradiation, this material is extremely sensitive to ambient light and the stored dose information is drastically affected by optical bleaching. From OSL analysis, it follows that both types of processes (TSL and OSL) were characterised by the same excitation and emission spectra and that optical bleaching originated from a broad stimulation band lying from visible to near infrared with a continuous character.  相似文献

Al2O3:C optical fibres were examined for potential use as real-time luminescence dosemeters for use in radiotherapy applications. The dosimetric properties of the fibres were studied in order to determine their usefulness as luminescence dosemeters. The measurements were performed by connecting the Al2O3:C fibres to a standard fused silica optical fibre and the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radioluminescence (RL) were measured through the fibre. The OSL and RL responses of the Al2O3 fibre probes were measured during irradiation to determine the potential of the Al2O3:C fibres in a real-time fibre optic dosimetry system.  相似文献

Ceramic materials that are widely employed in dental prosthetics and repairs exhibit luminescent properties. Because of their use in the body, these materials are potentially of interest in situations where retrospective dosimetry for individuals is required but where monitoring was not planned. The luminescent properties of dental ceramics obtained from Germany, Spain and the UK were examined. Linear dose-response characteristics were obtained in the range < 100 mGy to 10 Gy using thermoluminescence (TL), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and infrared-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) measurement techniques. Measurements of time-resolved luminescence were also performed to examine the nature of the luminescence recombination under visible (470 nm) and IR (855 nm) stimulation. The results obtained by TL and optically stimulated techniques suggest that there may be deeper traps than previously observed in certain types of dental ceramic. Such traps may be less susceptible to optical and athermal fading than was reported in earlier studies.  相似文献

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) from Al2O3:C (ALOC) irradiated with selected heavy ions (4He, 12C, 40Ar, and 56Fe) was examined for discussion on the effectiveness of ALOC for space radiation protection dosimetry. The OSL efficiency on the absorbed dose basis was almost unity for He (LETinfinity x H2O: 2.2 keV x microm(-1)) and decreased with increasing LET for C (14 keV x microm(-1)), Ar (91 keV x microm(-1)), and Fe (198 keV x microm(-1)); a notable reduction greater than 60%, was observed for Fe ions. The linearity in dose response and the angular independence for the heavy ions were fairly good (+/- <15%) Although further experimental studies are clearly necessary, these results suggest that small ALOC chips can be a part of an integrating dosimetry system in future space missions.  相似文献

Carbon-doped, anion-defective aluminium oxide has become a widely used and effective medium for personnel dosimetry applications using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. Though the commercial products currently using this material employ light-tight packaging to prevent light-induced effects on the OSL signal, the material could be employed in environments where package integrity cannot be assured. This paper reports on the results of an experiment performed to quantify the effects of sunlight exposure on alpha-Al2O3:C. Samples of commercially available Luxel material were exposed to carefully recorded levels of sunlight both before and after irradiations to determine the nature and magnitude of both activation and fading phenomena in this material. The results confirm that both fading and activation processes are seen in this material and indicate that the material reaches an equilibrium dose level in response to prolonged sunlight exposure equivalent to a dose of approximately 15 mGy under the experimental test conditions.  相似文献
