Flow boiling in micro channels is attracting large attention since it leads to large heat transfer area per unit volume. Generated vapor bubbles in micro channels are elongated due to the restriction of channel wall, and thus slug flow becomes one of the main flow regimes. In slug flow, sequential bubbles are confined by the liquid slugs, and thin liquid film is formed between tube wall and bubble. Liquid film evaporation is one of the main heat transfer mechanisms in micro channels and liquid film thickness is a very important parameter which determines heat transfer coefficient. In the present study, liquid film thickness is measured by laser focus displacement meter under flow boiling condition and compared with the correlation proposed for an adiabatic flow. The relationship between liquid film thickness and heat transfer coefficient is also investigated. Initial liquid film thickness under flow boiling condition can be predicted well by the correlation proposed under adiabatic condition. Under flow boiling condition, liquid film surface fluctuates due to high vapor velocity and shows periodic pattern against time. Frequency of periodic pattern increases with heat flux. At low quality, heat transfer coefficients calculated from measured liquid film thickness show good accordance with heat transfer coefficients obtained directly from wall temperature measurements.  相似文献

A numerical study of an oil–water Taylor flow is presented in this paper to explore its flow and heat transfer characteristics. Due to the large surface area to volume ratio in narrow channels, using slug flows, high heat and mass transfer rates could be achieved. Sound knowledge of the underlying physics of slug flow is required for the practical design of microfluidic devices. In this study, hydrodynamics and heat transfer characteristics of dispersed oil droplets flowing inside a vertically upward circular microchannel (D = 0.1 mm) with water being the carrier phase have been explored numerically. ANSYS Fluent was employed to capture the liquid–liquid interface using volume of fluid method. Two different boundary conditions were considered in the present study. First, an isothermal wall of 373 K and later a constant wall heat flux (420 kW/m2) were, respectively, prescribed over the wall of the microchannel. The numerical code was validated against the results available in the literature, and the significant results in the form of pressure drop and heat transfer rates have been discussed. A considerable increase in Nusselt number, up to 180% and 210%, was observed with the oil–water slug flow in contrast to the liquid‐only single‐phase flow inside the microchannel for isothermal and constant wall heat flux conditions, respectively.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this study, subcooled flow boiling was investigated in horizontal microtubes. Experiments were conducted using deionized water as the working fluid over a mass flux range of 4000–7000 kg m?2s?1 in microtubes with inner and outer diameters of ~600 and ~900 μm, respectively. Microtubes with lengths of 3, 6, and 12 cm were tested to clarify the effect of heated length on flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. A force analysis related to two-phase flow was conducted to understand the effect of forces on bubble dynamics. Pressure drop and heat transfer data in flow boiling were acquired. Experimental heat flux data were compared with partial boiling heat flux correlations, and good agreements were obtained. Pressure drop was larger in longer microtubes in comparison to shorter ones, while higher heat fluxes were obtained in shorter microtubes at the same wall superheat. Two-phase heat transfer coefficient increased with the microtube length due to lower temperature difference between wall temperature and bulk fluid temperature in longer microtubes. Higher heat fluxes achieved in shorter microtubes at the same wall superheat imply higher critical heat fluxes in shorter microtubes.  相似文献

A fundamental study of heat transfer characteristics of two-phase slug flow in microchannels is carried out employing the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method. Despite of the fact that numerical simulations of two-phase flows in microchannels have been attempted by many investigators, most efforts seem to have failed in correctly capturing the flow physics, especially those pertaining to the slug flow regime characteristics. The presence of a thin liquid film in the order of 10 μm around the bubble is a contributing factor to the above difficulty. Typically, liquid films have a significant effect on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics. In the simulations reported in this paper, the film is successfully captured and a very high local convective heat transfer coefficient is observed in the film region. A strong coupling between the conductive heat transfer in the solid wall and the convective heat transfer in the flow field is observed and characterized. Results showed that unsteady heat transfer through the solid wall in the axial direction is comparable to that in the radial direction. Results also showed that a fully developed condition could be achieved fairly quickly compared to single-phase flows. The fully developed condition is defined based on the Peclet number (Pe) and a dimensionless length of the liquid slug. Local and time-averaged Nusselt numbers for slug flows are reported for the first time. It was found that significant improvements in the heat transfer coefficient could be achieved by short slugs where the Nusselt number was found to be 610% higher than in single-phase flows. The study revealed new findings related to slug flow heat transfer in microchannels with constant wall heat flux.  相似文献

The dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of flow boiling bubble train moving in a micro channel is studied numerically. The coupled level set and volume of fluid (CLSVOF) is utilized to track interface and a non-equilibrium phase change model is applied to calculate the interface temperature as well as heat flux jump. The working fluid is R134a and the wall material is aluminum. The fluid enters the channel with a constant mass flux (335 kg/m2 1 s), and the boundary wall is heated with constant heat flux (14 kW/m2). The growth of bubbles and the transition of flow regime are compared to an experimental visualization. Moreover, the bubble evaporation rate and wall heat transfer coefficient have been examined, respectively. Local heat transfer is significantly enhanced by evaporation occurring vicinity of interface of the bubbles. The local wall temperature is found to be dependent on the thickness of the liquid film between the bubble train and the wall.  相似文献

Flow boiling through microchannels is characterized by nucleation and growth of vapor bubbles that fill the entire channel cross-sectional area. As the bubbles nucleate and grow inside the microchannel, a thin film of liquid or a microlayer gets trapped between the bubbles and the channel walls. The heat transfer mechanism present at the channel walls during flow boiling is studied numerically. It is then compared to the heat transfer mechanisms present during nucleate pool boiling and in a moving evaporating meniscus. Increasing contact angle improved wall heat transfer in case of nucleate boiling and moving evaporating meniscus but not in the case of flow boiling inside a microchannel. It is shown that the thermal and the flow fields present inside the microchannel around a bubble are fundamentally different as compared to nucleate pool boiling or in a moving evaporating meniscus. It is explained why thin-film evaporation is the dominant heat transfer mechanism and is responsible for creating an apparent nucleate boiling effect inside a microchannel.  相似文献

In the present study, the bubble growth, departure and the following flow pattern evolution during flow boiling in the mini-tube were visualized and quantitatively investigated, along with the simultaneous measurement of the local heat transfer coefficient around a specified nucleation site. Liquid nitrogen was employed as the working fluid and the test section was a segment of vertically upward quartz glass tube with the inner diameter range of 1.3–1.5 mm, which was coated by a layer of transparent ITO film as the heater on the outer surface. The growth rates of bubbles had similar and constant growth rate in two periods of time, i.e., before and after the bubbles departing from the nucleation site, which indicated the bubble growth was primarily governed by the inertial force. The bubble departure diameter and bubble period were investigated and the corresponding correlation was obtained based on the experimental data, which showed that the tube size of the mini-tube had no notable effect on the bubble departure and the trend of the bubble departure was similar to that in macro-tubes. Whereas the following flow pattern evolution was apparently confined due to the size effect, which presented desirable heat transfer performance in mini-tubes. The heat transfer coefficients for different flow patterns along the mini-tube were obtained in terms of bubbly, slug, annular flow and the flow regimes of flow reversal and post dryout. It was found that the dominant heat transfer mechanism was the liquid film evaporation which offered desirable heat transfer capability. The heat transfer performance would be deteriorated in the post dryout regime, while flow reversal could somewhat enhance the heat transfer upstream of the nucleation site. Boiling curves around the specified nucleation site were recorded and analyzed based on the recorded flow patterns.  相似文献

To explore the mechanism of boiling bubble dynamics in narrow channels, we investigate 2-mm wide I- and Z-shaped channels. The influence of wall contact angle on bubble generation and growth is studied using numerical simulation. The relationships between different channel shapes and the pressure drop are also examined, taking into account the effects of gravity, surface tension, and wall adhesion. The wall contact angle imposes considerable influence over the morphology of bubbles. The smaller the wall contact angle, the rounder the bubbles, and the less time the bubbles take to depart from the wall. Otherwise, the bubbles experience more difficulty in departure. Variations in the contact angle also affect the heat transfer coefficient. The greater the wall contact angle, the larger the bubble-covered area. Therefore, wall thermal resistance increases, bubble nucleation is suppressed, and the heat transfer coefficient is lowered. The role of surface tension in boiling heat transfer is considerably more important than that of gravity in narrow channels. The generation of bubbles dramatically disturbs the boundary layer, and the bubble bottom micro-layer can enhance heat transfer. The heat transfer coefficient of Z-shaped channels is larger than that of the I-shaped type, and the pressure drop of the former is clearly higher.  相似文献

Wall boiling and bubble population balance equations combined with a two-fluid model are employed to predict boiling two-phase flow in an inclined channel with a downward-facing heated upper wall. In order to observe the boiling behavior on the inclined, downward-facing heated wall, a visualization experiment was carried out with a 100 mm × 100 mm of the cross section, 1.2-m-long rectangular channel, inclined by 10° from the horizontal plane. The size of the heated wall was 50 mm by 750 mm and the heat flux was provided by Joule heating using DC electrical current. The temperatures of the heater surface were measured and used in calculating heat transfer coefficients. The wall superheat for 100 kW/m2 heat flux and 200 kg/m2s mass flux ranged between 9.3°C and 15.1°C. High-speed video images showed that bubbles were sliding, continuing to grow, and combining with small bubbles growing at their nucleation sites in the downstream. Then large bubbles coalesced together when the bubbles grew too large to have a space between them. Finally, an elongated slug bubble formed and it continued to slide along the heated wall. For these circumstances of wall boiling and two-phase flow in the inclined channel, the existing wall boiling model encompassing bubble growth and sliding was improved by considering the influence of large bubbles near the heated wall and liquid film evaporation under the large slug bubbles. With this improved model, the predicted wall superheat agreed well with the experimental data, while the RPI model largely overpredicted the wall superheat.  相似文献

An advanced numerical simulation method on fluid dynamics - lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is employed to simulate the movement of Taylor bubbles in a narrow channel, and to investigate the flow regimes of two-phase flow in narrow channels under adiabatic conditions. The calculated average thickness of the fluid film between the Taylor bubble and the channel wall agree well with the classical analytical correlation developed by Bretherton. The numerical simulation of the behavior of the flow regime transition in a narrow channel shows that the body force has significant effect on the movement of bubbles with different sizes. Smaller body force always leads to the later coalescence of the bubbles, and decreases the flow regime transition time. The calculations show that the surface tension of the fluid has little effect on the flow regime transition behavior within the assumed range of the surface tension. The bubbly flow with different bubble sizes will gradually change into the slug flow regime. However, the bubbly flow regime with the same bubble size may be maintained if no perturbations on the bubble movement occur. The slug flow regime will not change if no phase change occurs at the two-phase interface.  相似文献

Unsteady steam condensation inside a single miniature tube has been studied. The visualization of different instantaneous and periodically two-phase flow is conducted for different experimental conditions. The two-phase flow characterization is obtained using the image processing. Annular, slug bubbly, spherical bubbly, and wavy flows are observed by varying the steam inlet pressure and cooling heat transfer. The cycle of the periodically flows are compared. It is shown that increasing the cooling heat flow rate reduces the number of the instabilities and the injected bubbles. The axial vapor velocity decreases during the waves growth. The local distribution of the condensate film thickness is analyzed. It is shown that the liquid film becomes thinner near the meniscus-like interface because of the surface tension effect. The reverse annular flow is observed at the end of each periodic flow when the bubbles leave the channel. It can be concluded from experimental results that the stratification effect is not significant during the condensation inside the miniature tube. The capillary pressure evolution is measured. The maximum values are obtained in the waves locations and near the meniscus of the annular flow.  相似文献

A theoretical study was performed to investigate the evaporative heat transfer of high‐velocity two‐phase flow of air–water in a small vertical tube under both heating conditions of constant wall temperature and constant heat flux. A simplified two‐phase flow boundary layer model was used to evaluate the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of the annular two‐phase flow. The analytical results show that the gravitational force, the gas–liquid surface tension force, and the inertial force are much smaller than the frictional force and hence can be neglected for a small tube. The evaporative heat transfer characteristics of the small tube with constant wall temperature are quite close to those of the small tube with constant heat flux. The mechanism of the heat transfer enhancement is the forced convective evaporation on the surface of the thin liquid film. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To achieve heat transfer enhancement and lower pressure loss penalty, even pressure loss reduction, two novel fin-tube surface with two rows of tubes in different diameters are presented in this paper. Numerical simulation results show that the fin-tube surface with first row tube in smaller size and second row tube in larger size can lead to an increase of heat transfer and decrease of pressure drop in comparison with the traditional fin-tube surface with two rows of tubes in the same size. Based on this understanding, delta winglet pairs are punched out only from the larger fin area around the first transverse row of tubes in smaller size in the novel fin-tube surfaces. Delta winglet pairs used as longitudinal vortex generator are arranged either in “common flow up” or “common flow down” configurations. Numerical simulation results show that delta winglet pairs can bring about a further heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop decrease through the careful arrangement of the location, size and attack angle of delta winglet pairs either in “common flow up” or “common flow down” configurations. The traditional knowledge of heat transfer enhancement with necessary pressure drop increase is challenged by the present conclusion. The present work will be helpful to develop more compact, higher heat transfer efficiency, lower fan power and quieter heat exchanger of refrigeration and air condition system.  相似文献

Local heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops during boiling of the dielectric liquid fluorinert FC-77 in parallel microchannels were experimentally investigated in recent work by the authors. Detailed visualizations of the corresponding two-phase flow regimes were performed as a function of a wide range of operational and geometric parameters. A new transition criterion was developed for the delineation of a regime where microscale effects become important to the boiling process and a conventional, macroscale treatment becomes inadequate. A comprehensive flow regime map was developed for a wide range of channel dimensions and experimental conditions, and consisted of four distinct regions – bubbly, slug, confined annular, and alternating churn/annular/wispy-annular flow regimes. In the present work, physics-based analyses of local heat transfer in each of the four regimes of the comprehensive map are formulated. Flow regime-based models for prediction of heat transfer coefficient in slug flow and annular/wispy-annular flow are developed and compared to the experimental data. Also, a regime-based prediction of pressure drop in microchannels is presented by computing the pressure drop during each flow regime that occurs along the microchannel length. The results of this study reveal the promise of flow regime-based modeling efforts for predicting heat transfer and pressure drop in microchannel boiling.  相似文献

The fluid flow and heat transfer behavior of liquid–liquid two phase flows have led to significantly improve the heat transfer rates in microchannels. Both numerical and experimental studies are reviewed in this paper to gain useful insights into the effect of a number of parameters such as film thickness, Peclet number, working fluid and flow geometry on hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of microchannels using liquid-liquid two phase flow. In addition, the paper summarises information about common correlations proposed to predict the pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient in the form of Nusselt number (Nu). The present study shows that there is little agreement across the literature between measured pressure drop and Nusselt number and predictions based on these correlations. Finally, the conclusions and important summaries, and some possible future development of this field are presented.  相似文献

Flow boiling of the perfluorinated dielectric fluid FC-77 in a silicon microchannel heat sink is investigated. The heat sink contains 60 parallel microchannels each of 100 μm width and 389 μm depth. Twenty-five evenly distributed temperature sensors in the substrate yield local heat transfer coefficients. The pressure drop across the channels is also measured. Experiments are conducted at five flow rates through the heat sink in the range of 20–80 ml/min with the inlet subcooling held at 26 K in all the tests. At each flow rate, the uniform heat input to the substrate is increased in steps so that the fluid experiences flow regimes from single-phase liquid flow to the occurrence of critical heat flux (CHF). In the upstream region of the channels, the flow develops from single-phase liquid flow at low heat fluxes to pulsating two-phase flow at high heat fluxes during flow instability that commences at a threshold heat flux in the range of 30.5–62.3 W/cm2 depending on the flow rate. In the downstream region, progressive flow patterns from bubbly flow, slug flow, elongated bubbles or annular flow, alternating wispy-annular and churn flow, and wall dryout at highest heat fluxes are observed. As a result, the heat transfer coefficients in the downstream region experience substantial variations over the entire heat flux range, based on which five distinct boiling regimes are identified. In contrast, the heat transfer coefficient midway along the channels remains relatively constant over the heat flux range tested. Due to changes in flow patterns during flow instability, the heat transfer is enhanced both in the downstream region (prior to extended wall dryout) and in the upstream region. A previous study by the authors found no effect of instabilities during flow boiling in a heat sink with larger microchannels (each 300 μm wide and 389 μm deep); it appears therefore that the effect of instabilities on heat transfer is amplified in smaller-sized channels. While CHF increases with increasing flow rate, the pressure drop across the channels has only a minimal dependence on flow rate once boiling is initiated in the microchannels, and varies almost linearly with increasing heat flux.  相似文献

Bubble growth behavior and heat transfer characteristics during subcooled flow boiling in segmented finned microchannels have been numerically investigated. Simulations have been performed for a single row of segmented finned microchannel and predicted results are compared with experimental investigations. Onset of nucleation, formation of bubbles, their growth and movements have been investigated for different values of applied heat flux. Mechanism of bubble expansion without clogging resulting in enhanced heat transfer in segmented finned microchannels has been explained. Temperature and pressure fluctuations during subcooled flow boiling condition have been investigated. It is observed that at high heat flux, thin liquid film trapped between the bubble and channel wall is evaporated leading to localized heating effect. Predicted flow patterns are similar to experimental results. However, simulations over predict the bubble growth rate and heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of nanofluid flow inside horizontal flattened tubes under constant heat flux. The nanofluid is prepared by dispersion of CuO nanoparticle in base oil and stabilized by means of an ultrasonic device. Nanofluids with different particle weight concentrations of 0.2%, 0.5%, 1% and 2% are used. Copper tubes of 11.5 mm I.D. are flattened into oblong shapes and used as test sections. The nanofluid flowing inside the tube is heated by an electrical heating coil wrapped around it. Required data are acquired for laminar and hydrodynamically fully developed flow inside round and flattened tubes.The effect of different parameters such as flow Reynolds number, flattened tube internal height and nanofluid particle concentration on heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the flow is studied. Observations show that the heat transfer performance is improved as the tube profile is flattened. Flattening the tube profile resulted in pressure drop increasing. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient as well as pressure drop is increased by using nanofluid instead of base fluid. Furthermore, the performance evaluation of the two enhanced heat transfer techniques studied in this investigation shows that applying flattened tubes instead of the round tube is a more effective way to enhance the convective heat transfer coefficient compared to the second method which is using nanofluids instead of the base liquid.  相似文献

Transient flow patterns and bubble slug lengths were investigated with oxygen gas (O2) bubbles produced by catalytic chemical reactions using a high speed camera bonded with a microscope. The microreactor consists of an inlet liquid plenum, nine parallel rectangular microchannels followed by a micronozzle, using the MEMS fabrication technique. The etched surface was deposited by the thin platinum film, which is acted as the catalyst. Experiments were performed with the inlet mass concentration of the hydrogen peroxide from 50% to 90% and the pressure drop across the silicon chip from 2.5 to 20.0 kPa. The silicon chip is directly exposed in the environment thus the heat released via the catalytic chemical reactions is dissipated into the environment and the experiment was performed at the room temperature level. It is found that the two-phase flow with the catalytic chemical reactions display the cyclic behavior. A full cycle consists of a short fresh liquid refilling stage, a liquid decomposition stage followed by the bubble slug flow stage. At the beginning of the bubble slug flow stage, the liquid slug number reaches maximum, while at the end of the bubble slug flow stage the liquid slugs are quickly flushed out of the microchannels. Two or three large bubbles are observed in the inlet liquid plenum, affecting the two-phase distributions in microchannels. The bubble slug lengths, cycle periods as well as the mass flow rates are analyzed with different mass concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and pressure drops. The bubble slug length is helpful for the selection of the future microreactor length ensuring the complete hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Future studies on the temperature effect on the transient two-phase flow with chemical reactions are recommended.  相似文献
