Call admission control (CAC) is a mechanism used in networks to administer quality of service (QoS). Whereas the CAC problem in time-division multiple access (TDMA)-based cellular networks is simply related to the number of physical channels available in the network, it is strongly related to the physical layer performance in code-division multiple access (CDMA) networks since the multi-access interference in them is a function of the number of users and is a limiting factor in ensuring QoS. In this article, the CAC issues in multimedia DS-CDMA systems are reviewed by illustrating the basic principles underlying various schemes that have been proposed progressively from the simplest to the complex. The article also introduces SIR as a measure of QoS and describes the relatively simple schemes to administer CAC. The expression for SIR resulting from linear minimum mean-squared error processing is also presented. This article illustrates how CAC for multiple class service can be casted into an optimality framework and then discuss the recent work addressing self-similar multiple access interference.  相似文献

提出了一种适用于采用无线接入多媒体流的拥塞控制算法,简称adaptive-MQWB(adaptivemediaQoSandwirelessbandwidth)。该算法依据当前带宽的动态变化率,在满足多媒体传输的最大时延的前提下,以最佳目标队长为实现目标,寻求最优的主动队列管理方案。仿真结果表明,与目前已有的MADR、tuned-RED算法相比,adaptive-MQWB算法在带宽动态变化的自适应性和多媒体传输时延的QoS保证方面都表现出更好的性能优势。  相似文献

Data generated in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) may have different importance and it has been claimed that the network exert more efforts in servicing applications carrying more important information. Nevertheless, importance of packets cannot generally be accurately represented by a static priority value. This article presents a dynamic priority based congestion control (DPCC) approach that makes two major innovations in WMSNs. First, DPCC employs dynamic priority to represent packet importance. Second, it prioritizes the local traffic of motes near the base station when WMSN is highly congested. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of the proposed approach with respect to energy efficiency, loss probability and latency as well.  相似文献

Scheduling in multimedia CDMA wireless networks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Wireless systems in the future will have to provide multimedia services where different users have different physical-layer quality of service (QoS) requirements (e.g., bit energy per interference power density, E/sub b//N/sub 0/, or bit error rate and power constraints) and network-layer QoS requirements (e.g., delay bound, delay-jitter, throughput, and loss). We investigate the use of power control, processing gain and/or multiple codes, and scheduling in CDMA systems to accommodate these diverse service requirements. We first show that the instantaneous capacity region, given in terms of the set of user bit rates that can be supported simultaneously subject to peak power and E/sub b//N/sub 0/ constraints, is nonconvex. This suggests that by time-sharing the channel, one may be able to get better system throughput. We define the capacity region as the convex hull of the instantaneous capacity region and we show that it may be obtained by time sharing between operating points, where each user either uses full power or is silent (bang-bang control). We then consider the problem of scheduling so as to meet prespecified delay bounds or minimum service curve requirements for traffic streams, which are specified in terms of a traffic profile such as a sigma-rho constraint (enforced by a leaky bucket) and a guarantee that the system is stable.  相似文献

When multimedia information including speech, image, data etc. are transmitted, the difference in information rates, required quality, and traffic performance should be taken into account. A wireless spread spectrum system can achieve a flexible balance of these differences because of inherent asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) capability. In order to accomplish wireless multimedia communication, three parameters are investigated: the transmission power, packet length, and time slot. We propose and investigate two methods to accomplish wireless multimedia communication by using these parameters: (1) a method based on control of both transmission power and transmission packet length and (2) a method based on control of both transmission power and adaptive time slot. We derive the optimal transmission packet length and transmission power in (1) and derive optimal adaptive time slot and transmission power in (2) by using traffic of measurement and nonlinear programming. By the comparison, the two proposed methods are compared to the minislotted alternating priority (MSAP). Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed methods, when the priority of each medium is graded, show better performance than other systems in terms of average throughput and delay time of all media  相似文献

An important quality-of-service (QoS) issue in wireless multimedia networks is how to control handoff drops. We propose admission-control algorithms that adaptively control the admission threshold in each cell in order to keep the handoff-dropping probability below a predefined level. The admission threshold is dynamically adjusted based on handoff-dropping events. We first present a simple admission-control scheme that brings out an important performance evaluation criterion - intercell fairness - and serves as a reference point. We then investigate the intercell unfairness problem and develop two enhanced schemes to overcome this problem. The performance of these protocols is benchmarked and compared with other competitive schemes. The results indicate that our schemes perform very well while, in addition, achieving significantly reduced complexity and signaling load.  相似文献

As we move towards IP-based multimedia wireless networks with voice, video and data convergence, quality of service (QoS) provisioning will become an increasingly challenging task. One implication is that greater emphasis on managing the call admission and overall network resources will be needed. This paper presents a conservative and adaptive quality of service (CAQoS) framework for provisioning the QoS for both real-time and non-real-time traffic in a multimedia wireless network. Unlike most conventional schemes, which gradually scale down the bandwidth of ongoing connections to accommodate new connection/hand-off requests, CAQoS introduces an early scaling-down of bandwidth for new connections based on a designated provisioning model. The performance of a CAQoS system is evaluated through simulations of a realistic wireless environment. Simulation results show that CAQoS meets our design goals and outperforms conventional schemes.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an aware-based adaptive opportunistic retransmission control scheme for wireless multimedia Mesh networks. The proposed scheme provides maximum retransmission count optimization based on environment-aware to improve packet relay probability. The scheme discriminates the types of packet loss in wireless link by means of environment information and selects the retransmission count by taking the IEEE 802.11 wireless channel characteristics into consideration. Furthermore, the maximum retransmission count of MAC is adjusted adaptively. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly reduces packet collision probability and packet loss rate, and thus improves network throughput.  相似文献

We consider multimedia wireless networks in environments where traffic characterizations and traffic rates are generally time‐varying. For such networks we propose a CDMA transmission policy, in conjunction with a moving boundaries concept induced by a traffic monitoring high‐level protocol. The complementary characteristics of different wireless networks make it attractive to integrate a wide range of radio access technologies. Most of previous work on integrating heterogeneous wireless networks concentrates on network layer quality of service (QoS), such as blocking probability and utilization, as design criteria. However, from a user’s point of view, application layer QoS, such as multimedia distortion, is an important issue. In this paper, we propose an optimal distributed network selection scheme in heterogeneous wireless networks considering multimedia application layer QoS. Specifically, we formulate the integrated network as a restless bandit system. With this stochastic optimization formulation, the optimal network selection policy is indexable, meaning that the network with the lowest index should be selected. The proposed scheme can be applicable to both tight coupling and loose coupling scenarios in the integration of heterogeneous wireless networks. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed scheme.  相似文献

A new method is described for routing multimedia traffic in a frequency-hop (FH) store-and-forward packet radio network. The method is illustrated for traffic of two types, each type having its own throughput, delay, and error-rate requirements. A typical application is the routing of voice and data packets in a distributed multiple-hop network. In such an application, voice packets cannot tolerate much delay, but they are allowed to contain a small number of frame erasures while data packets must be delivered error-free even if a moderate delay is required to do so. The fully distributed routing protocol presented in the paper takes into account the type of service required for each type of traffic, and it adapts to the interference as seen by the FH radio receivers in the network. Our approach to multimedia routing is based on least-resistance routing with different link and path resistance metrics for different message types. Each of the resistance metrics for a link reflects the ability of the link to provide the service required by the one of the message types. This includes, but is not limited to, a measure of the likelihood of successful reception by the FH radio receiver for that link. The route selection for a particular type of packet depends on the resistances of the links along the routes from that packet's source to its destination. In general, different routes may be selected for different types of packets. The primary conclusion of this paper is that the quality of service increases for each of the two types of multimedia traffic if the routing protocol accounts for the type of message that is being relayed  相似文献

The emerging multimedia applications of Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs) impose new challenges in design of algorithms and communication protocols for such networks. In the view of these challenges, error control is an important mechanism that enables us to provide robust multimedia communication and maintain Quality of Service (QoS). Despite the existence of some good research works on error control analysis in WSNs, none of them provides a thorough study of error control schemes for multimedia delivery. In this paper, a comprehensive performance evaluation of Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ), Forward Error Correction (FEC), Erasure Coding (EC), link-layer hybrid FEC/ARQ, and cross-layer hybrid error control schemes over Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSNs) is performed. Performance metrics such as energy efficiency, frame Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), frame loss rate, cumulative jitter, and delay-constrained PSNR are investigated. The results of our analysis show how wireless channel errors can affect the performance of multimedia sensor networks and how different error control scenarios can be effective for those networks. The results also provide the required insights for efficient design of error control protocols in multimedia communications over WSNs.  相似文献

Ad hoc wireless networks consist of mobile nodes interconnected by multihop communication paths. Unlike conventional wireless networks, ad hoc networks have no fixed network infrastructure or administrative support. The topology of the network changes dynamically as mobile nodes join or depart the network or radio links between nodes become unusable. This article addresses some of the quality of service issues for ad hoc networks which have started to receive increasing attention in the literature. The focus is on QoS routing. This is a complex and difficult issue because of the dynamic nature of the network topology and generally imprecise network state information. We present the basic concepts and discuss some of the results. The article concludes with some observations on the open areas for further investigation  相似文献
