Computer anxiety and attitudes among undergraduate students in Greece

This study attempts to give an insight to the computer anxiety levels and attitudes toward computers of the students of the Library and Information Systems (LIS) Department of Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Thessaloniki using Computer Anxiety Rating Scale (CARS) and Computer Attitudes Scale (CAS). Both constructs were examined using explanatory factor analysis. Internal consistency of the factors of each construct was satisfactory. It was found that there was a strong negative relationship between the two concepts. Canonical correlation analysis demonstrated that anxiety explains more variance of the attitudes than vice versa. Another finding was that most of LIS students were not anxious toward computers and with positive attitudes. Factors correlated negatively with anxiety and positively with attitudes, were knowledge of English language, PC ownership, access of students to computers at younger ages, perceived advanced computer skills and computer experience as reflected by frequency of computer use.     

The next generation of language labs: Can mobiles help? A case study

One major challenge regarding the use of today's language labs relates to teachers' and students' awareness and computer skills. Most teachers and students may not have the requisite computer skills and might soon become overwhelmed by the sophisticated functionality of today's digital lab systems. Thus, they should be provided with the appropriate training and technical support to reduce the apprehension that is usually associated with new technology. Recurrent technical problems are another shortcoming. Failure to operate the lab equipment efficiently due to hardware or software problems will inevitably cause delays and frustration for both students and instructors.To overcome such problems in existing language labs, this paper presents a novel cross-platform mobile lab system for language learning, called Mlab. The target users of MLab are language teachers and students, and the system offers them the freedom to move around and use their own devices at any time and in any place. Therefore, this research paper presents Mlab development and evaluation through three approaches: a holistic test case scenario, think aloud and interview sessions. The results showed high usability rates and generally positive attitudes toward using the mobile lab system.

OpenGnSys: A novel system toward centralized deployment and management of computer laboratories

Operation and status of computers in teaching laboratories can significantly influence motivation and expectation of students, thus resulting in a reduction of their academic progress. To address this issue, this paper presents a complete deployment, management, and maintenance tool for operating systems (OS) called OpenGnSys. As part of a larger educational project, OpenGnSys has been tested in a real computer lab with the aim of improving teaching and learning in classroom. OpenGnSys provides an easy and intuitive way to administrate labs from a graphical user console with remote backup functions. Its design comprises a two-node high availability cluster for both hardware infrastructure and computer services, thus ensuring the availability of essential lab equipment. Additionally, this paper proposes a methodology for the installation, maintenance and quality control for computers and laboratory equipment by site acceptance tests (SATs). The main interest of the proposed SATs lies in representing a standardized procedure, which intends to facilitate and determine the degree of compliance with lab specification and operation services. In order to address the research problem, we analyzed OpenGnSys including lab technicians, 94 students and 7 teachers on Computer Science along three academic years. As a result, the OpenGnSys management system has demonstrated the effectiveness of the followed methodology and positively influenced the students' academic progress.

移动计算机远程操作台设计与实现

介绍一种用单片机实现的移动计算机远程操作控制台设计方法。该操作台可以直接使用计算机标准PC键盘和显示器，实现计算机远距离无线操作，适用于实验室内移动目标的研究工作。
