A multiple-prism grating solid-state dye laser oscillator was demonstrated with its grating, deployed in a Littrow configuration, under total illumination at reduced intracavity beam expansion. This compact cavity yields laser linewidths in the 350-MHz range and smooth temporal pulses with a near-Gaussian profile.  相似文献

A polarization-independent wideband mixed metal dielectric grating with high efficiency of the -1st order is analyzed and designed in Littrow mounting. The mixed metal dielectric grating consists of a rectangular-groove transmission dielectric grating on the top layer and a highly reflective mirror composed of a connecting layer and a metal film. Simplified modal analysis is carried out, and it shows that when the phase difference accumulated by the two propagating modes is odd multiples of π/2, the diffraction efficiency of the -1st order will be high. Selecting grating depth and duty cycle for satisfying the phase difference condition for both TE (electric field parallel to grooves) and TM (magnetic field parallel to grooves) polarizations, a polarization-independent high-efficiency grating can be designed. Using rigorous coupled-wave analysis and a simulated annealing algorithm, geometric parameters of the reflective grating are exactly obtained. The optimized grating for operation around a wavelength of 800 nm exhibits diffraction efficiencies higher than 90% for both TE and TM polarizations over a 120 nm wavelength bandwidth. The simplified modal analysis can be applied in other types of reflective gratings if the top layer is a dielectric transmission grating.  相似文献

We present experimental results on the intracavity generation of radially polarized light by incorporation of a polarization-selective mirror in a CO(2)-laser resonator. The selectivity is achieved with a simple binary dielectric diffraction grating etched in the backsurface of the mirror substrate. Very high polarization selectivity was achieved, and good agreement of simulation and experimental results is shown. The overall radial polarization purity of the generated laser beam was found to be higher than 90%.  相似文献

Off-plane anastigmatic imaging in Offner spectrometers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this paper, the imaging performance of an Offner concentric imaging spectrometer is analyzed when the spectrometer entrance slit is disposed arbitrarily on the plane that is parallel to the grating grooves and contains the common center of curvature. Astigmatism-corrected designs are obtained for off-plane incidence on the grating if one point on the slit is located on the Rowland circle of the primary mirror. In this case, the combined system of primary mirror plus diffraction grating provides two astigmatic line images oriented parallel and orthogonal to the plane of diffraction, with the former located on the same plane as the slit. Consequently, these images can be brought to a single focus on this plane by the tertiary mirror if its radius of curvature is chosen properly. In addition, coma aberration is simultaneously removed. These results can be applied to the design of two-mirror or three-mirror spectrometers, generalizing the concept of the best imaging circle and providing solutions to get anastigmatic imaging for two object points and two wavelengths.  相似文献

Two intracavity laser absorption techniques for ultralow concentration detection of chemicals in solution are compared. The first consists of a laser diode in a grating extended cavity, which produces a linear calibration curve for parts in 10(9) (ppb) concentrations corresponding to 17 nM. By replacing the grating with a highly reflective mirror, parts in 10(12) (ppt) concentration detection is achieved, which corresponds to 340 pM. We report, to our knowledge for the first time, ppt detection of analyte concentration in liquid solution demonstrating good agreement between theory and experiment.  相似文献

Abstract

A diffractive optical element (DOE) has been designed, fabricated and used in an external feedback configuration to set the wavelength of operation of uncoated Fabry-Pérot diode lasers. The DOE was designed to replace the conventional elements of an external feedback system, which are a collimating lens and grating in the Littrow configuration. The goal was to simplify use of the external cavity laser by replacing the lens and grating with a single optical element while maintaining the performance that is achieved with a grating and lens. Four DOEs were fabricated with two different focal lengths and two different reflectivities. DOE external cavity lasers were tested for maximum tunable range and stability of the wavelength of operation and compared with an external cavity laser based on a lens and grating in the Littrow configuration. A 40 nm tuning range was achieved with the DOE external cavity laser and this is comparable with the tuning range of the external cavity lasers based on a grating and collimating lens in the Littrow configuration.  相似文献

An alignment method for pulse-compression gratings that obviates the need to place the gratings at normal incidence to remove grating-tip error is proposed. Grating-tip and groove-orientation errors are removed using two alignment wavelengths in a manner analogous to a laser-beam pointing and centering procedure entirely at the respective Littrow angles for the two wavelengths. By choosing wavelengths with Littrow angles close to the use angle of the grating, the residual tip and groove-orientation errors that may be introduced when the grating mount is tilted to its use angle are reduced. This method has greatly facilitated the alignment of the OMEGA Extended Performance (EP) large-aperture pulse compressors, thereby reducing residual pulse-front tilt caused by nonparallel gratings. OMEGA EP is a high-energy, petawatt-class laser at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics. A numerical simulation of the alignment procedure is presented.  相似文献

We report on the optical characterization of an ultrahigh diffraction efficiency grating in a first-order Littrow configuration. The apparatus used was an optical cavity built from the grating under investigation and an additional high-reflection mirror. The measurement of the cavity finesse provided precise information about the grating's diffraction efficiency and its optical loss. We measured a finesse of 1580 from which we deduced a diffraction efficiency of (99.635+/-0.016)% and an overall optical loss due to scattering and absorption of just 0.185%. Such high-quality gratings, including the tool used for their characterization, might apply for future gravitational wave detectors. For example, the demonstrated cavity itself presents an all-reflective, low-loss Fabry-Perot resonator that might replace conventional arm cavities in advanced high-power Michelson interferometers.  相似文献

Dielectric transmission gratings with a similar period as the wavelength of the incident light can exhibit strong polarization dependence. By optimizing the groove width of a negative first-order Littrow transmission grating it can be achieved that light is transmitted to the zeroth order for one polarization, regardless of the groove depth, while it is efficiently diffracted for the other polarization. An investigation of this remarkable effect, based on a modal field representation inside the grating, as well as experimental results are presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we report single-longitudinal-mode operation in a flashlamp-pumped dye laser incorporating a multiple-prism beam expander with the grating either in a Littrow or grazing-incidence configuration. Linewidths in the 260-MHz range were obtained, using rhodamine 590 dye at output energies exceeding 60 mJ. Pulse duration for the multiple-prism Littrow dye laser oscillator was approximately 200 ns (FWHM).  相似文献

A tunable external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) based on a transmission diffraction grating in a Littrow mount has been developed and characterized. A single-transverse-mode diode laser at 650 nm is used in an external-cavity configuration in which the transmission grating is used as a dispersive element to select the single longitudinal mode. The transmission diffraction grating is made with electron-beam lithography. A tunable true single-mode cw output power of >20 mW is obtained from the ECDL. The total wavelength tuning range is 12 nm, and the mode-hop-free continuous tunability is >20 GHz.  相似文献

When a microscopic sphere is illuminated by a laser beam, interference fringes inside the sphere lead through the Kerr effect to a holographic grating. This grating is capable of phase conjugation, which is particularly strong when optical resonance takes place. According to numerical simulation, based on the Green function method, phase-conjugation reflectivity R = 0.5 can be achieved in a single silica sphere of approximately 9-microm diameter with realistic laser power. Such spheres can be aligned together to become a phase-conjugation mirror of large area and high reflectivity.  相似文献

An antireflection-coated broad-area laser diode with an emitter size of 400 microm x 1 microm and a chip length of 1500 microm is operated in a simple external cavity. For wavelength stabilization and to narrow the bandwidth a diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration is used. At an injection current of 9 A up to 6.8 W of optical output power and a resulting slope efficiency of 0.8 W/A could be achieved. Further, the bandwidth could be narrowed to 100 pm (FWHM), and a tuning range of 40 nm around 976 nm was obtained.  相似文献

The total internal reflection (TIR) grating is an integrated optical diffraction grating designed to achieve high efficiency for the retrodiffracted order by use of total internal reflection twice within a groove of the grating rather than by use of metalized grooves. Numerical calculations are presented for both TE and TM polarizations of incident light. When the TIR grating was used in the -mth-order Littrow mount with m > 13, the diffraction efficiency was found to decrease linearly with 1/m. The polarization dependence of the retrodiffraction efficiency exceeds 3 dB for TIR gratings formed in silica glass (n = 1.5) but is very small for gratings with InP-based technology (n = 3.2).  相似文献

A new compact spaceborne high-resolution spectrometer developed for the European Space Agency's Venus Express spacecraft is described. It operates in the IR wavelength range of 2.2 to 4.3 microm and measures absorption spectra of minor constituents in the Venusian atmosphere. It uses a novel echelle grating with a groove density of 4 lines/mm in a Littrow configuration in combination with an IR acousto-optic tunable filter for order sorting and an actively cooled HgCdTe focal plane array of 256 by 320 pixels. It is designed to obtain an instrument line profile of 0.2 cm(-1). First results on optical and spectral properties are reported.  相似文献

The energy conservation of grating diffraction is analyzed in a particular condition of incidence in which two incident waves reach a symmetrical grating from the two sides of the grating normal at the first-order Littrow mounting. In such a situation the incident waves generate an interference pattern with the same period as the grating. Thus in each direction of diffraction, interference occurs between two consecutive diffractive orders of the symmetrical incident waves. By applying only energy conservation and the geometrical symmetry of the grating profile to this problem it is possible to establish a general constraint for the phases and amplitudes of the diffracted orders of the same incident wave. Experimental and theoretical results are presented confirming the obtained relations.  相似文献

We investigate experimentally the influence of the grating reflectivity, grating resolution, and diode facet antireflection (AR) coating on the intrinsic linewidth of an external-cavity diode laser built with a diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration. Grating lasers at 399, 780, and 852 nm are determined to have typical linewidths between 250 and 600 kHz from measurements of their frequency noise power spectral densities. The linewidths are little affected by the presence of an AR coating on the diode facet but narrow as the grating reflectivity and grating resolution are increased, with the resolution exerting a greater effect. We also use frequency noise measurements to characterize a laser mount with improved mechanical stability.  相似文献
