A differential deficit on the more difficult of 2 cognitive tasks has been found in numerous studies of schizophrenia. Resource limitations, rather than impairments in particular cognitive abilities, can explain these findings. Researchers often match tasks for difficulty level (healthy participant performance) to rule out resource limitations. This assumes processing resource load can be estimated from task difficulty, which is not always the case. A direct measure of resource allocation is needed. In this study, pupillary responses were recorded to index resource allocation (greater dilation indicates greater allocation) during performance of the digit span distractibility task in participants with schizophrenia (n = 35) and nonpsychiatric participants (n = 35). Nonpsychiatric participants recalled significantly more digits in the distraction, relative to the neutral, condition but also showed significantly greater pupil dilation in the distraction condition. The psychometrically easier condition, therefore, had a higher processing load. Participants with schizophrenia showed greater impairment relative to nonpsychiatric participants in the distraction condition. This finding cannot be attributed to a deficit in distractibility, however, because poorer performance was found in the higher-load condition, so resource limitations cannot be ruled out. The present experiment assessed dual-task performance in 20 young (mean age 21) and 20 old (mean age 72) adults. Ss first received extensive single-task practice on consistent and varied search tasks. Next, they received dual-task practice in 2 conditions: (1) varied visual search plus varied memory search and (2) consistent visual search plus varied memory search. In the varied-varied condition, young and old adults showed similar dual-task decrements. These results, along with the current data in the literature, suggest that practice may play an important role in determining age-related dual-task differences (or lack thereof). In the consistent-varied condition, young adults attained single-task performance levels, because they had automatized the consistent task. Old adults were unable to match their single-task performance levels, indicating that they were unable to automatize the consistent task. Controlled and automatic aspects of semantic-associative functioning in schizophrenia were investigated by evaluating performance on animal word list generation (WLG). Responses from control (n?=?47) and patient (n?=?38) participants were subjected to multidimensional scaling (MDS), cluster analysis (CA), and indices on the basis of number of shared attributes (SA) between consecutive responses. Patient MDS results accounted for less variance and contained more error than control data. CA results yielded fewer and less clear animal-response subgroups among patients yet demonstrated intact associations among strongly related exemplars. The SA indices revealed better clustering and more effective switching among response clusters in controls than patients. Results suggest that animal WLG in schizophrenia is compromised both by aberrant automatic semantic-associative network activation and by controlled processes such as search, access, and selection. Working memory theories heavily rely on the concept of processing resources and the their efficient deployment. Some recent work with schizophrenia-spectrum patients has suggested that many associated cognitive impairments may be reduced to deficits in working memory, possibly related to reductions in information-processing capacity resources. In this study, 38 patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), 22 patients with other personality disorders, and 14 healthy comparison participants performed a dual-task processing assessment that was designed specifically for use in this type of study. Participants recalled lists of digits at their predetermined maximum digit span and performed box-checking tests, first alone and then in a dual-task format. Instructions included equal prioritization of both tasks. SPD patients had significantly shorter digit spans, and they also showed more deterioration on both tasks. Performance operating characteristics curves indicated that SPD patients' reduced performance was not due to abnormal resource allocation strategies leading to strategic failures. The authors discuss the implications of these processing capacity limitations for understanding both the signature of cognitive impairment within the schizophrenia spectrum and general abnormalities in working memory. The relation between resource limitations and the type of processing (automatic vs controlled) on a multiple-frame search task (MFST) was examined in 15 schizophrenic and 15 normal control Ss. After 320 trials of consistently mapped practice, the patients' detection accuracy was normalized, and the effect of processing load (letter array size) on their detection accuracy was eliminated, which suggests automatization. Changes in load effects with practice could not be used as an index of automatization in control Ss, because of their unexpected lack of load effects at the beginning of practice. In a dual-task (MFST during auditory shadowing) condition after MFST practice, patients' MFST accuracy deteriorated nonsignificantly, and patients' shadowing declined significantly. The findings suggest schizophrenics have reduced available processing resources, but research is needed to determine whether this is due to abnormal automatization. Patients with defined frontal lobe lesions were assigned to 1 of 2 groups based on whether they showed a behaviorally assessed dysexecutive syndrome or were behaviorally normal. All participants were tested on dual-task performance and on 2 tasks assumed to measure frontal lobe function, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and verbal fluency. The dysexecutive group differed significantly from the nondysexecutive in showing impaired capacity for dual-task coordination, but there were no significant differences on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and verbal fluency. Results are interpreted in terms of a multicomponent central executive, whose function is linked to, but not coterminous with, the operation of the frontal lobes. The ability of subjects to process English words in a spatially parallel manner was examined in several redundant-target detection tasks. When redundant targets were identical in a given display, processing limitations were evident in a task that required subjects to make semantic categorizations of words. However, parallel processing of identical redundant target words was exhibited in a lexical decision task that required a structural analysis of letter strings, but not an analysis of word meaning. The difference in performance in the two tasks suggests that the capacity for semantic processing is limited. Analyses designed to examine whether the redundancy gain in Experiment 2 could be attributed to limited capacity processing in conjunction with positional preferences provided evidence against this possibility. In addition, these analyses suggested that the processing times for the redundant targets in Experiment 2 might be positively correlated. In the third and fourth experiments, the redundant-target displays contained two different words. Processing interference, in the form of a redundancy loss, was evident in the lexical decision task, but not in the semantic categorization task, confirming a difference in the mode of processing between the two tasks. The results provide evidence against the unlimited-capacity, parallel processing hypothesis of late selection theories of attention. Schizophrenic patients and normals learned a series of motor responses to successively presented visual stimuli; the schizophrenics and normals were each divided into 2 groups, Shock and Rapport, matched on an initial test, Pattern I. The shock groups were each tested on two subsequent tasks, Patterns II and III. "The results showed a differential facilitative effect of the shock stimulation for the schizophrenic patients on Pattern III but not on Pattern II. The schizophrenic rapport group declined in efficiency from Pattern II to III, a result not seen in the shock group of patients or in either normal group. These findings were interpreted in terms of an inferred process of motivational dissipation during performance in schizophrenia." The authors reported that a subgroup of schizophrenic patients performed well on a tone serial position task but was impaired on an auditory word serial position task (Wexler, Stevens, Bowers, Cerniak, & Goldman-Rakic, 1998). This study assessed 30 schizophrenic and 32 controls (matched for comparable tone discrimination) on 4 versions of the verbal serial position tasks and 2 tone serial position tasks. Patients performed poorly on all verbal tasks but performed comparably to controls when tones served as stimuli. Proactive interference and visual presentation further compounded the verbal deficits. Deficits persisted with pronounceable nonword stimuli. These findings provide evidence of specific deficits in language-related processing, although the authors could not rule out the possibility that the differential effects that were observed between the tone and word tasks, and particularly among the verbal tasks, may result from differing discriminating power of the different tests. In this article, the authors explored the existence of across-notation automatic numerical processing using size comparison and same-different paradigms. Participants were Arabic speakers, who used 2 sets of numerical symbols--Arabic and Indian. They were presented with number pairs in the same notation (Arabic or Indian) or in different ones (Arabic and Indian). In the size comparison paradigm, 2 digits differing both numerically and physically were compared on the physical dimension. Nevertheless, there was evidence that participants automatically processed the irrelevant numerical dimension in different notation pairs. In the same-different paradigm, 2 digits were presented either in the same or in different notations. Participants had to indicate whether the 2 digits were physically the same. The results again showed evidence for the automatic processing of numerical magnitude for pairs in different notations. Findings of both experiments suggest that numbers in different notations are automatically translated into a common representation of magnitude, in line with M. Reviews the literature on intra- and interhemispheric information processing in schizophrenia with respect to dichotic and monotic listening, hemiretinal presentation, and dihaptic stimulation. There appears to be little support for the notion that schizophrenia is related to interhemispheric transfer deficits or abnormal functional lateralization. The performance deficits manifested by schizophrenics on lateral information-processing tasks are also incompatible with models on left-hemisphere brain damage. Results suggest left-hemisphere overactivation and consequent temporal abnormalities in processing sensory information directed to the right sensory field. Two experiments assessed inhibitory mechanisms associated with the posterior and anterior attention networks in schizophrenia. Experiment 1 assessed the inhibition of return effect of the posterior network. Both healthy adults and schizophrenic adults showed inhibition of return, suggesting that this inhibitory mechanism of visual orienting is preserved in schizophrenia. Experiment 2 assessed semantic inhibition, which supposedly taps the anterior network, in a lexical-decision task. Healthy adults showed semantic inhibition effects in both visual fields. Schizophrenic adults showed semantic inhibition effects when targets were presented to the left visual field, involving the right hemisphere. However, semantic facilitation rather than inhibition was observed when targets were presented to the right visual field, involving the left hemisphere. A visual target (T?) containing either 1 or 2 letters, or a random 10-sided polygon, was presented after an auditory target (T?) at a stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) of either 50, 150, 250, or 600 ms. Task? was a speeded pitch discrimination to the tone, and across experiments, T? was either 1 of 2 tones (2-alternative discrimination [2AD]) or 1 of 4 tones (4-alternative discrimination [4AD]). Memory for the visual information decreased as SOA was reduced when a mask was used, but not when there was no mask. The effects of SOA were larger for the 4AD Task? than the 2AD Task?. The results demonstrate cross-modal, dual-task interference on visual encoding and suggest central interference with the short-term consolidation of visual information in short-term memory. The degree to which processing resources are responsible for age differences in performance on recall and recognition tasks was examined in this study. To examine this, a secondary task incorporating a memory component (digit preloads) was implemented during retrieval. Results revealed that older adults, relative to younger adults, exhibited greater decrements in secondary task performance as the difficulty of the secondary task increased. These age differences were greater in the recall task than in the recognition task. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that speed accounted for the largest proportion of age-related variance in the recall task while both speed and working memory contributed to much of the secondary task variance. Results confirm the hypothesis that recall requires greater processing capacity than recognition and that older adults have greater processing-capacity limitations than younger adults. Assessed childhood symptom factors for 43 male children (average age 10.9 yrs), initially diagnosed as schizophrenic, in terms of their relationship to parental factors. The parental factors, in addition to family variables not derived by factor analysis, were evaluated as predictors of outcome over a 22-yr period extending from early to middle adulthood. Two maternal factors, Mother Anxious and Mother Neglect, were significantly related to adult outcome. The maternal factors were differentially associated with paternal factors, global judgments of severity of family disturbance and childhood symptoms. Path analysis indicated that the measure of severity of family disturbance had substantial, direct effects on adult measures with minimal mediation by childhood symptoms. This study investigated the processing of second-order relational face information in schizophrenia. Twenty-eight schizophrenic patients and 28 controls were asked to say whether the space between the eyes was the same in 2 side-by-side faces. The 2 faces were derived from the same original face, but the spacing between the eyes was either the same or differed by various distances. The results showed that schizophrenic patients needed a space that was twice as great as controls to see a difference. The relationships among information processing, social skill, and gender in individuals with chronic schizophrenia were investigated. Although there were no gender differences in information processing, social skill, or negative symptoms, performance on information-processing tasks was related to various indices of social skill (e.g., paralinguistic skill) for female, but not male, inpatients. This pattern of results remained after statistical controls were applied for age, illness chronicity, and positive symptoms.  相似文献

Examined 2 differing explanations of schizophrenic processing deficit, J. Chapman and A. McGhie's (1962) and A. J. Yates's (see PA, Vol 41:10769). 32 18-46 yr old schizophrenics, classified on the acute-chronic and paranoid-nonparanoid dimensions, and 8 17-45 yr old neurotics were tested on 2 dichotic listening tasks. One task gave reaction time measures of processing speed at 3 rates of stimulus presentation; the other assessed stimulus detection and channel selectivity using theory of signal detection methods. Results support Yates and indicate that schizophrenics can attend successfully to 1 of 2 competing channels. Neither reduced sensory sensitivity nor response bias appeared to affect the performance of any group of Ss. Slowness of processing was a deficit characteristic of chronic, particularly nonparanoid, schizophrenics, although the factors responsible for this slowness remain a matter for empirical investigation.
