This article describes a network concept called the wide area ubiquitous network (WAUN) and its research activities. WAUN is a network for sensors and actuators, and can support low-end wireless terminals, which are expected to be used for new applications. Among the many types of R&D being performed in the WAUN project, this article focuses on the feasibility of its basic feature and target. The basic feature is ?wide coverage using very-low-power-consumption terminals,? and its specific target is a ?5-km cell radius using 10-mW transmission power terminals with a battery life of 10 years.? The results of a basic field experiment and a laboratory experiment suggest that the target seems to be feasible using wireless technologies such as diversity reception (with additional future effort to improve the packet error rate for use in business districts) and LSI technologies such as a power switch fabricated in a CMOS/SOI LSI. 相似文献

The ATM Forum completed the first version of its private network/network interface (PNNI) in March 1996 and many ATM switch manufacturers are now offering early implementations. PNNI offers a different type of internetwork or internodal interface from the traditional Signalling System No 7 based approach favoured to date by 'public' network operators, such as BT. In spite of its name, however, PNNI may find its place in network service provider networks as well as in 'private' or customer networks. Some of the perceived limitations of the current specification for such an environment are currently being addressed in version 2, tentatively due for completion in the second half of 1998.The PNNI really consists of two parts, a signalling protocol based around the ATM Forum's UNI signalling specification, and a dynamic source routeing protocol. The algorithm for choosing nonblocking sets of data cells from the queues can significantly affect the throughput and queuing behavior. The authors present an algorithm that is shown to have maximum throughput. This algorithm is reduced on a banyan network to a constraint satisfaction problem by using an equivalence approach. To gain the required computational speed, the massive parallelism of neural networks is used. A neural network design using multiple overlapping winner-take-all circuits is defined. This is shown to be stable and to result only in nonblocking sets of data cells. An efficient interface between the neural network and the queue is also defined. The performance of the banyan with a neural network controller is compared to a noninternal-blocking switch with various controllers. The huge increase in broadband service requires much more bandwidth than ever before; however, due to the cost sensitivity, it is not possible to pursue high transmission rate blindly in the access network, which requires us to consider how to improve network efficiency. In this paper, a software-defined passive optical network architecture with network coding (NC) is proposed to reduce downstream bandwidth consumption and thus increases the throughput and network efficiency. To flexibly implement the coding operation on local peer traffic, the NC pair management scheme is provided and keeps the compatibility with the current multi-point control protocol (MPCP) in a single optical line terminal (OLT). Considering the trends in OLT pooling and the requirement of smooth network upgrade, software-defined networking (SDN) techniques are applied in the NC-based passive optical networks. Through re-arranging the affiliations between the OLTs and optical network units (ONUs), the local traffic between peer ONUs will be led from non-NC-supported OLTs to NC-supported OLTs, and then the downstream efficiency will be still quite high even in a hybrid OLT pool. The experiments and evaluation results show that, the software-defined passive optical networks with NC reduce nearly 50 % occupied downstream bandwidth, when there is local traffic between peer ONUs, even in a hybrid OLT pool. 相似文献
