A pilot study was conducted over a period of 18 months at the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant (PLWWTP) in San Diego, CA to evaluate the operational and water quality performance of six selected membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems at average and peak flux operation. Each of these systems was operated at peak flux for 4 h a day for six consecutive days to assess peak flux performance. Virus seeding studies were also conducted during peak flux operation to assess the capability of these systems to reject MS-2 coliphage. When operating at steady state, these MBR systems achieved an effluent BOD concentration of <2 mg/L and a turbidity of <0.1 NTU. Peak flux for the MBR systems ranged from 56 to 76 L/m2/h (liters per square meter per hour) with peaking factors in the range of 1.5-3.2. When switching from average to peak flux operation, a reversible drop of 22-32% in temperature-corrected permeability was observed for all submerged MBR systems. The percent drop in permeability increased as MLSS concentration in the membrane tank increased from 11,100 mg/L to 15,300 mg/L and was observed to be highest for the system operating at highest MLSS concentration. Such trends were not observed with an external MBR system. Each MBR system was able to sustain a 4-h-a-day peak flow for six consecutive days with only moderate membrane fouling. The membrane fouling was quantified by measuring the drop in temperature-corrected permeability. This drop ranged from 13 to 33% over six days for different submerged MBR systems. The MBR systems achieved microbial removal in the range of 5.8-6.9 logs for total coliform bacteria, >5.5 to >6.0 logs for fecal coliform bacteria and 2.6 to >3.4 logs for indigenous MS-2 coliphages. When operating at peak flux, seeded MS-2 coliphage removal ranged from 1.0 to 4.4 logs, respectively. The higher log removal values (LRVs) for indigenous MS-2 coliphage among different MBR systems were probably the result of particle association of indigenous coliphage. Differences in membrane pore size (0.04-0.2 μm) amongst the MBR systems evaluated did not have a substantial impact on indigenous MS-2 coliphage removal, but seeded MS-2 coliphage removal varied among the different MBR systems.  相似文献

Increasing attention has been given to pollution of the water environment by pharmaceutical compounds discharged from wastewater treatment plants. High-pressure driven membranes such as a nanofiltration (NF) membrane and a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane are considered to be effective for control of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment. In practical applications of NF/RO membranes to municipal wastewater treatment, feed water for the membranes always contains organic macromolecules at concentrations of up to 10 mg-TOC/L, which are mainly composed of soluble microbial products (SMPs) produced during biological wastewater treatment such as an activated sludge process. In this study, influence of these organic macromolecules on removal of six pharmaceuticals by NF/RO membranes (UTC-60 and LF10) was investigated. Two types of biological treatment (conventional activated sludge process followed by media filtration (i.e., tertiary treatment) and treatment with a membrane bioreactor (MBR)) were examined as pretreatments for NF/RO membranes in this study. In the filtration tests with wastewater effluents, removal of the pharmaceuticals was higher than that seen with deionized pure water spiked with the pharmaceuticals. The increase was significant in the case of the NF membrane. Both alteration of membrane surface properties due to membrane fouling and association of the pharmaceuticals with organic macromolecules contributed to the increase in removal of pharmaceuticals by the membranes. Characteristics of the organic macromolecules contained in the wastewater effluents differed depending on the type of treatment, implying that removal of pharmaceuticals by NF/RO membranes is influenced by the type of pretreatment employed.  相似文献

Measurements were conducted at a Mediterranean site (latitude 35 degrees 31' north and longitude 24 degrees 03' east) during summer, to study the concentration of microorganisms emitted from a wastewater treatment plant under intensive solar radiation (520-840 W/m2) and at elevated air temperatures (25-31 degrees C). Air samples were taken with the Air Sampler MAS 100 (Merck) at each stage of an activated-sludge wastewater treatment (pretreatment, primary settling tanks, aeration tanks, secondary settling tanks, chlorination, and sludge processors). Cultivation methods based on the viable counts of mesophilic heterotrophic bacteria, as well as of indicator microorganisms of faecal contamination (total and faecal coliforms and enterococci), and fungi were performed. During air sampling, temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity and wind speed were measured. The highest concentrations of airborne microorganisms were observed at the aerated grit removal of wastewater at the pretreatment stage. A gradual decrease of bioaerosol emissions was observed during the advanced wastewater treatment from the pretreatment to the primary, secondary and tertiary treatment (97.4% decrease of mesophilic heterotrophic bacteria, and 100% decrease of total coliforms, faecal coliforms and enterococci), 95.8% decrease of fungi. The concentration of the airborne microorganisms at the secondary and tertiary treatment of the wastewater was lower than in the outdoor control. At the same time, the reduction of the microbial load at the waste sludge processors was 19.7% for the mesophilic heterotrophic bacteria, 99.4% for the total coliforms, and 100% for the faecal coliforms and the enterococci, 84.2% for the fungi. The current study concludes that the intensive solar radiation, together with high ambient temperatures, as well as optimal wastewater treatment are the most important factors for low numbers of microbes in the air.  相似文献

Microbiological research was conducted on a dual, secondary wastewater treatment system which was part of The Pennsylvania State University wastewater treatment plant. Each aeration basin received identical wastewater which was the effluent from a high rate trickling filter. One of the aeration basins was dosed with aluminum sulfate for the purpose of phosphorus removal. The other aeration basin (control) was operated in the conventional manner without alum addition. Plate counts performed on combined chemical-biological sludge and control activated sludge revealed that a higher number of viable micro-organisms was contained in the chemical-biological sludge, but the magnitude of difference between the two sludges was significant depending on the culture medium employed. Results suggest the aluminum flocs formed in the chemical-biological treatment enmesh dispersed wastewater micro-organisms, some of which are qualitatively unlike those indigenous to natural activated sludge. The combined chemical-biological sludge contained significantly higher numbers of lipolytic, gelatinolytic, and thiosulfate oxidizing micro-organisms and, possibly, fewer nitrite oxidizing micro-organisms than did control activated sludge. Alum did not appear to affect flagellated protozoa in mixed liquor; however, amoeboid and ciliated protozoa were found less frequently in alum dosed than in control mixed liquor. The settled effluent from the combined chemical-biological aeration basin generally contained fewer total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci than did counterpart control effluents.  相似文献

The membrane bioreactor (MBR) features many advantages, such as its excellent effluent quality and compactness. Moreover, the MBR is well known for its disinfectant capacity. This paper investigates virus removal performance for municipal wastewater using a submerged MBR and the operational conditions affecting the virus removal using indigenous somatic coliphages (SC) as an indicator for viruses. The results revealed that the municipal wastewater acquired by the Qinghe Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, Beijing, contained an SC concentration of (2.81 ± 1.51) × 104 PFU ml−1, which varies seasonally due to spontaneous decay. In the MBR system, the biomass process dominates SC removal. Membrane rejection is an essential supplement of biomass process for SC removal. In this paper, the relative contributions of biomass process and membrane rejection during the start-up and steady operational periods are discussed in detail. The major factors affecting SC removal are biodegradation, membrane pore size, and gel layer formation on the membrane. During long-term experiments, it was demonstrated that high inoculated sludge concentration, long hydraulic retention time, moderate fouling layer, and non-frequent chemical cleaning are favorable for high SC removal in MBR systems.  相似文献

Viruses seeded into a 50,000 gal day−1 three-stage activated sludge pilot plant were effectively reduced in the treatment process. Reduction was highest in the system's denitrification and high-rate activated sludge modules, both averaging more than 95% virus removal. Combining the removal capacity of each unit process resulted in a calculated virus reduction of 99.97% for the total treatment system.A study of the indigenous viruses present after primary settling illustrated the wide diversions that can occur in wastewaters during a 24 h period. It illustrated as well the necessity of collecting temporally related samples within the treatment system. No direct relationship was evident between the numbers of coliphages and enteroviruses present in the primary effluent.  相似文献

Total coliforms, faecal coliforms and coliphages in the raw sewage were detected in high numbers during the months averaging a maximum temperature of 20°C. The secondary and tertiary effluents show a 99–100% removal of the three indicators of faecal pollution. A direct correlation between the faecal coliforms and coliphages suggests that coliphages alone may be used as an indicator for the presence of pathogenic bacteria in contaminated waters.  相似文献

Airborne enteric coliphages and bacteria in sewage treatment plants   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The concentrations of airborne culturable microorganisms were determined in wastewater and sludge treatment processes of seven sewage treatment plants. Two types of coliphages, Salmonella and total viable bacteria were sampled by the BioSampler and the numbers of faecal coliforms and enterococci were obtained from the Andersen 6-stage impactor. The BioSampler recovered higher numbers of airborne coliphage viruses than has been measured with other liquid samplers in previous studies, suggesting that this sampler has improved efficiency for sampling airborne coliphages. Airborne coliphages were detected in many stages of the wastewater or sludge treatment process. The highest microbiological air contaminations were found in pre-treatment and aerated grit separation stages of the operation. This was attributed to aerosolisation of microorganisms by mechanical handling or forced aeration. Aeration and settling processes located outdoors caused low microbial concentrations, but the brush aerator released more microorganisms into the air. Our results emphasize the necessity for controlling the exposure of sewage workers to airborne microorganisms, especially in process areas that involve mechanical agitation or forced aeration of wastewater.  相似文献

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) were compared with conventional activated sludge systems (CAS) for micropollutant degradation, in laboratory-scale spiking experiments with synthetic and real domestic wastewater. The target micropollutants were polar in nature and represented a broad range in biodegradability. The experimental data indicated that MBR treatment could significantly enhance removal of the micropollutants 1,6- and 2,7-naphthalene disulfonate (NDSA) and benzothiazole-2-sulfonate. 1,5-NDSA, EDTA and diclofenac were not removed in either the MBR or the CAS. The other compounds were equally well degraded in both systems. For 1,3-naphthalene disulfonate, the existence of a minimum threshold level for degradation could be demonstrated. Although MBRs could not always make a difference in the overall removal efficiencies achieved, they showed reduced lag phases for degradation and a stronger memory effect, which implies that they may respond quicker to variable influent concentrations. Finally, micropollutant removal also turned out to be less sensitive to system operational variables.  相似文献

Thickened wastewater activated sludge was treated in 13 pilot-scale sludge treatment wetlands of various configurations that operated continuously for three years in North Greece. Sludge was loaded for approximately 2.5 years, and the beds were left to rest for the remaining period. Three different sludge loading rates were used that represented three different population equivalents. Residual sludge stability and maturity were monitored for the last year. Sludge was regularly sampled and microbial respiration activity indices were measured via a static respiration assay. The phytotoxicity of sludge was quantified via a seed germination bioassay. Measurements of total solids, organic matter, total coliforms, pH and electrical conductivity were also made. According to microbial respiration activity measurements, the sludge end-product was classified as stable. The germination index of the final product exceeded 100% in most wetland units, while final pH values were approximately 6.5. The presence of plants positively affected the stability and maturity of the residual sludge end-product. Passive aeration did not significantly affect the quality of the residual sludge, while the addition of chromium at high concentrations hindered the sludge decomposition process. Conclusively, sludge treatment wetlands can be successfully used, not only to dewater, but also to stabilize and mature wastewater sludge after approximately a four-month resting phase.  相似文献

The activated sludge comprises a complex microbiological community. The structure (what types of microorganisms are present) and function (what can the organisms do and at what rates) of this community are determined by external physico-chemical features and by the influent to the sewage treatment plant. The external features we can manipulate but rarely the influent. Conventional control and operational strategies optimise activated sludge processes more as a chemical system than as a biological one. While optimising the process in a short time period, these strategies may deteriorate the long-term performance of the process due to their potentially adverse impact on the microbial properties. Through briefly reviewing the evidence available in the literature that plant design and operation affect both the structure and function of the microbial community in activated sludge, we propose to add sludge population optimisation as a new dimension to the control of biological wastewater treatment systems. We stress that optimising the microbial community structure and property should be an explicit aim for the design and operation of a treatment plant. The major limitations to sludge population optimisation revolve around inadequate microbiological data, specifically community structure, function and kinetic data. However, molecular microbiological methods that strive to provide that data are being developed rapidly. The combination of these methods with the conventional approaches for kinetic study is briefly discussed. The most pressing research questions pertaining to sludge population optimisation are outlined.  相似文献

The occurrence of animal viruses in the aerosol emissions of wastewater treatment facilities was evaluated by direct assay and by the use of coliforms and coliphages as indicator organisms. Coliforms and coliphages were compared and evaluated with regard to their suitability as indicators of airborne animal viral contamination from wastewater treatment facilities. Two plants, one with treatment by activated sludge and the other by trickling filtration, were studied. Field air sampling procedures used large-volume air samplers, with recirculation devices, and Andersen samplers. Airborne viruses were enumerated by a most probable number (MPN) procedure. Partially treated liquid sewage contained about 1.0 × 102 pfu l−1 of animal viruses assayed on Buffalo Green Monkey (BGM) cells, 3.6 × 105 and 5.0 × 105 pfu l−1 of coliphages, depending upon the E. coli host strain used for assay, and 2.0 × 109 colonies l−1 of coliform bacteria. No airborne animal viruses were recovered, airborne coliphage levels averaged 2.3 × 10−1 and 3.0 × 10−1 MPN m−3, coliforms from aerosol emissions were 2.1 × 102 colonies m−3. Ratios of coliphages to animal viruses indicate that wastewater treatment plants may be continuous sources of low level concentrations of animal virus aerosols. Evidence shows coliforms to be much less stable than coliphages in the airborne state. Coliphages may be a more acceptable indicator of airborne animal viral contamination than coliforms.  相似文献

Reliability analysis of wastewater treatment plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article presents a reliability analysis of 166 full-scale wastewater treatment plants operating in Brazil. Six different processes have been investigated, comprising septic tank+anaerobic filter, facultative pond, anaerobic pond+facultative pond, activated sludge, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors alone and UASB reactors followed by post-treatment. A methodology developed by Niku et al. [1979. Performance of activated sludge process and reliability-based design. J. Water Pollut. Control Assoc., 51(12), 2841-2857] is used for determining the coefficients of reliability (COR), in terms of the compliance of effluent biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and fecal or thermotolerant coliforms (FC) with discharge standards. The design concentrations necessary to meet the prevailing discharge standards and the expected compliance percentages have been calculated from the COR obtained. The results showed that few plants, under the observed operating conditions, would be able to present reliable performances considering the compliance with the analyzed standards. The article also discusses the importance of understanding the lognormal behavior of the data in setting up discharge standards, in interpreting monitoring results and compliance with the legislation.  相似文献

The biological nutrient-removal potential of an on-site Membrane bioreactor (MBR) located in the basement of a four-person house treating domestic wastewater was investigated. The reactor consists of two tanks in series. This treatment plant differs from other conventional MBRs by a highly fluctuating influent water flow and a lack of pretreatment. During the first period, the first reactor was operated as a primary clarifier, resulting in nitrogen and phosphorus removals of 50% and 25%, respectively. Primary sludge production and bad odors in the basement were further disadvantages. When using the first reactor as an anaerobic/anoxic reactor by recycling activated sludge and mixing the first reactor, nitrogen and phosphorus removals of over 90% and 70% were achieved, respectively. By applying a dynamic model of the plant, the return sludge ratio was identified as the most important parameter. With a return sludge ratio of about 1.2, optimal PAO growth and phosphorous removal up to 90% was reached. Since only activated sludge is produced with this operational mode, on-site sludge dewatering is possible. During vacation periods without loading, the Bio-P activity is kept constant if the aeration is reduced to 5-20 min d(-1).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to quantify the occurrence and release of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) into the environment through the effluent and biosolids of different wastewater treatment utilities including an MBR (Membrane Biological Reactor) utility, conventional utilities (Activated Sludge, Oxidative Ditch and Rotatory Biological Contactors-RBCs) and multiple sludge treatment processes (Dewatering, Gravity Thickening, Anaerobic Digestion and Lime Stabilization). Samples of raw wastewater, pre- and post-disinfected effluents, and biosolids were monitored for tetracycline resistant genes (tetW and tetO) and sulfonamide resistant gene (Sul-I) and tetracycline and sulfonamide resistant bacteria. ARGs and ARB concentrations in the final effluent were found to be in the range of ND(non-detectable)-2.33 × 106 copies/100 mL and 5.00 × 102-6.10 × 105 CFU/100 mL respectively. Concentrations of ARGs (tetW and tetO) and 16s rRNA gene in the MBR effluent were observed to be 1-3 log less, compared to conventional treatment utilities. Significantly higher removals of ARGs and ARB were observed in the MBR facility (range of removal: 2.57-7.06 logs) compared to that in conventional treatment plants (range of removal: 2.37-4.56 logs) (p < 0.05). Disinfection (Chlorination and UV) processes did not contribute in significant reduction of ARGs and ARB (p > 0.05). In biosolids, ARGs and ARB concentrations were found to be in the range of 5.61 × 106-4.32 × 109 copies/g and 3.17 × 104-1.85 × 109 CFU/g, respectively. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in concentrations of ARGs (except tetW) and ARB between the advanced biosolid treatment methods (i.e., anaerobic digestion and lime stabilization) and the conventional dewatering and gravity thickening methods.  相似文献

The fates of several macrolide, sulphonamide, and trimethoprim antibiotics contained in the raw sewage of the Tel-Aviv wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) were investigated after the sewage was treated using either a full-scale conventional activated sludge (CAS) system coupled with a subsequent ultrafiltration (UF) step or a pilot membrane bioreactor (MBR) system. Antibiotics removal in the MBR system, once it achieved stable operation, was 15-42% higher than that of the CAS system. This advantage was reduced to a maximum of 20% when a UF was added to the CAS. It was hypothesized that the contribution of membrane separation (in both systems) to antibiotics removal was due either to sorption to biomass (rather than improvement in biodegradation) or to enmeshment in the membrane biofilm (since UF membrane pores are significantly larger than the contaminant molecules). Batch experiments with MBR biomass showed a markedly high potential for sorption of the tested antibiotics onto the biomass. Moreover, methanol extraction of MBR biomass released significant amounts of sorbed antibiotics. This finding implies that more attention must be devoted to the management of excess sludge.  相似文献

Reuse of domestic sewage effluents in Arizona requires that certain microbiological standards be met. The purpose of this project was to determine the effectiveness of rapid mixed media filtration in the removal of enteric viruses, fecal coliforms and roundworm eggs from sewage destined for reuse as irrigation water. Two surrogate viruses, the simian rotavirus SA-11, used in place of human rotavirus which is pathogenic to man, and f2 coliphage, known to adsorb poorly to surfaces, were used to evaluate filter performance. No significant removal of coliphages occurred by the filters. Addition of ferric chloride and anionic polymer did not enhance virus removal. When small amounts of alum and polymer were added, removal of colliphage increased to 37–40%. Average removal of rotavirus ranged from 21 to 27% after addition of alum and polymer. Mixed media filtration effectively reduced coliform numbers. The removal of Ascaris ova by filtration was essentially complete.  相似文献

Twelve wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were sampled in France and Belgium in 1999 and 2000 in order to estimate the fecal coliform (FC) removal efficiency of various types of treatment. Only one of these WWTPs was equipped with a specific step to eliminate microorganisms (UV disinfection preceded by sand filtration). FC abundance was measured in raw and treated sewage by plate counts on selective medium and rapid beta-D-glucuronidase (GLUase)-based assays. Removal of culturable FC was the most efficient in treatments with high retention time (activated sludge process with nitrification and denitrification, lagooning), in biofiltration and in the treatment with a tertiary disinfection step. GLUase activity measurements showed the same removal pattern as plate counts except for UV disinfection, where no reduction of GLUase activity was measured. Specific loads of culturable FC and GLUase activity, i.e. daily amounts of culturable FC or GLUase activity in sewage per inhabitant-equivalent, were calculated in raw and treated wastewater for the different WWTPs.  相似文献

The removal of beta blockers and psycho-active drugs was investigated in a representative conventional German WWTP by long-term measurement campaigns along different biological treatment processes. The activated sludge treatment with an elevated SRT of 18 d was the only process which led to a significant removal of certain beta blockers and psycho-active drugs. The removal efficiency was below 60% for all compounds except for the natural opium alkaloids codeine and morphine being removed by more than 80%. Primary biological transformation and sorption onto sludge as the main removal mechanisms were examined in lab-scale batch experiments. Sorption onto activated sludge was found to be negligible (<3%). The biological transformation could be described by pseudo-first order kinetics and the transformation constants kbiol were used to predict the removal of beta blockers and psycho-active drugs in an activated sludge unit with a model. For most compounds the removal efficiencies measured on the full-scale WWTP were within the 95% confidence intervals predicted by the model. The results from full-scale measurements and modeling indicate that biological transformation in the nitrification tank together with parameters such as the sludge retention time and the temperature is crucial regarding the biological transformation of beta blockers and psycho-active drugs in conventional WWTPs.  相似文献
