Field investigations on the treatment of MTBE and benzene from contaminated groundwater in pilot or full-scale constructed wetlands are lacking hugely. The aim of this study was to develop a biological treatment technology that can be operated in an economic, reliable and robust mode over a long period of time. Two pilot-scale vertical-flow soil filter eco-technologies, a roughing filter (RF) and a polishing filter (PF) with plants (willows), were operated independently in a single-stage configuration and coupled together in a multi-stage (RF + PF) configuration to investigate the MTBE and benzene removal performances. Both filters were loaded with groundwater from a refinery site contaminated with MTBE and benzene as the main contaminants, with a mean concentration of 2970 ± 816 and 13,966 ± 1998 μg L−1, respectively. Four different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) with a stepwise increment of 60, 120, 240 and 480 L m−2 d−1 were applied over a period of 388 days in the single-stage operation. At the highest HLR of 480 L m−2 d−1, the mean concentrations of MTBE and benzene were found to be 550 ± 133 and 65 ± 123 μg L−1 in the effluent of the RF. In the effluent of the PF system, respective mean MTBE and benzene concentrations of 49 ± 77 and 0.5 ± 0.2 μg L−1 were obtained, which were well below the relevant MTBE and benzene limit values of 200 and 1 μg L−1 for drinking water quality. But a dynamic fluctuation in the effluent MTBE concentration showed a lack of stability in regards to the increase in the measured values by nearly 10%, which were higher than the limit value. Therefore, both (RF + PF) filters were combined in a multi-stage configuration and the combined system proved to be more stable and effective with a highly efficient reduction of the MTBE and benzene concentrations in the effluent. Nearly 70% of MTBE and 98% of benzene were eliminated from the influent groundwater by the first vertical filter (RF) and the remaining amount was almost completely diminished (∼100% reduction) after passing through the second filter (PF), with a mean MTBE and benzene concentration of 5 ± 10 and 0.6 ± 0.2 μg L−1 in the final effluent. The emission rate of volatile organic compounds mass into the air from the systems was less than 1% of the inflow mass loading rate. The results obtained in this study not only demonstrate the feasibility of vertical-flow soil filter systems for treating groundwater contaminated with MTBE and benzene, but can also be considered a major step forward towards their application under full-scale conditions for commercial purposes in the oil and gas industries.  相似文献

The high levels in developing countries and the apparent scale of its impact on the global burden of disease underline the importance of particulate as an environmental health risk and the consequence need for monitoring them particularly in indoor microenvironment. PM2.5 μm, 1.0 μm, 0.5 μm and 0.25 μm were measured inside and outside 14 residential homes located in different microenvironment during a six-month period (October 2007–March 2008) in Agra located in the central region of India. Particulate mass concentrations were measured using Grimm aerosol spectrometer for 24 h inside and outside the homes located in roadside, rural and urban area, along with the field survey study done in the same region. The indoor average concentrations recorded for PM2.5, PM1.0, PM0.5 and PM0.25 were maximum for the rural homes (173.03 μgm−3, 133.26 μgm−3, 96.02 μgm−3, 8.56 μgm−3) followed by roadside homes (137.93 μgm−3, 117.09 μgm−3, 68.17 μgm−3, 8.55 μgm−3) and then by urban homes (135.55 μgm−3, 102.92 μgm−3, 38.38 μgm−3, 6.35 μgm−3). The average I/O ratios for PM2.5, PM1.0, PM0.5 and PM0.25 in roadside and rural areas were close to or above 1.00 and less than 1.00 for urban areas. The I/O ratios obtained were linked to the indoor activities using occupant's diary entries. The positive values of correlation coefficient (r) also indicated the indoor concentrations of particulate matter were correlated with the corresponding outdoor concentrations.  相似文献

Compliance with air quality standards requires control of source emissions: fine exhaust particles are already subject to regulation but vehicle fleets increase whilst the non-exhaust emissions are totally uncontrolled. Emission inventories are scarce despite their suitability for researchers and regulating agencies for managing air quality and PM reduction measures. Only few countries in Europe proposed street cleaning as a possible control measure, but its effectiveness is still far to be determined. This study offers first estimates of Real-world Emission Factors for PM10 and brake-wear elements and the effect on PM10 concentrations induced by intense street cleaning trials.A straightforward campaign was carried out in the city of Barcelona with hourly elemental composition of fine and coarse PM to detect any short-term effect of street cleaning on specific tracers of non-exhaust emissions. Samples were analyzed by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission.Real-world Emission Factor for PM10 averaged for the local fleet resulted to be 97 mg veh− 1 km− 1. When compared to other European studies, our EF resulted higher than what found in UK, Germany, Switzerland and Austria but lower than Scandinavian countries. For brake-related elements, total EFs were estimated, accounting for the sum of direct and resuspension emissions, in 7400, 486, 106 and 86 μg veh− 1 km− 1, respectively for Fe, Cu, Sn and Sb. In PM2.5Fe and Cu emission factors were respectively 4884 and 306 μg veh− 1 km− 1.Intense street cleaning trials evidenced a PM10 reduction at kerbside of 3 μg m− 3 (mean daily levels of 54 μg m− 3), with respect to reference stations. It is important to remark that such benefit could only be detected in small time-integration periods (12:00-18:00) since in daily values this benefit was not noticed. Hourly PM elemental monitoring allowed the identification of mineral and brake-related metallic particles as those responsible of the PM10 reduction.  相似文献

To conserve energy, office buildings with air-conditioning systems in Thailand are operated with a tight thermal envelope. This leads to low fresh-air ventilation rates and is thought to be partly responsible for the sick building syndrome symptoms reported by occupants. The objectives of this study are to measure concentrations and to determine sources of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in office buildings with air-conditioning systems in the business area of Bangkok. Indoor and outdoor air samples from 17 buildings were collected on Tenax-TA sorbent tubes and analyzed for individual VOCs by thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD–GC/MS). Building ventilation was measured with a constant injection technique using hexafluorobenzene as a tracer gas. The results show that the VOC concentrations varied significantly among the studied buildings. The two most dominant VOCs were toluene and limonene with average concentrations of 110 and 60.5 μg m−3, respectively. A Wilcoxon sum rank test indicated that the indoor concentrations of aromatic compounds and limonene were statistically higher than outdoor concentrations at the 0.05 level, while the indoor concentrations of chlorinated compounds were not. Indoor emission factors of toluene and limonene were found to be highest with the average values of 80.9 and 18.9 μg m−2 h−1, respectively. Principal component analysis was applied to the emission factors of 13 VOCs, producing three components based on source similarities. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey investigation and field measurements of building air exchange pointed to indoor air complaints related to inadequate ventilation.  相似文献

Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) have recently gained interest in relation to membrane fouling. These sticky, gel-like particles consist of acidic polysaccharides excreted by bacteria and algae. The concentrations, expressed as xanthan gum equivalents L−1 (μg Xeq L−1), usually reach hundred up to thousands μg Xeq L−1 in natural waters. However, very few research was performed on the occurrence and fate of TEP in drinking water, this far. This study examined three different drinking water production centers, taking in effluent of a sewage treatment plant (STP), surface water and groundwater, respectively. Each treatment step was evaluated on TEP removal and on 13 other chemical and biological parameters. An assessment on TEP removal efficiency of a diverse range of water treatment methods and on correlations between TEP and other parameters was performed. Significant correlations between particulate TEP (>0.4 μm) and viable cell concentrations were found, as well as between colloidal TEP (0.05-0.4 μm) and total COD, TOC, total cell or viable cell concentrations. TEP concentrations were very dependent on the raw water source; no TEP was detected in groundwater but the STP effluent contained 1572 μg Xeq L−1 and the surface water 699 μg Xeq L−1. Over 94% of total TEP in both plants was colloidal TEP, a fraction neglected in nearly every other TEP study. The combination of coagulation and sand filtration was effective to decrease the TEP levels by 67%, while the combination of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis provided a total TEP removal. Finally, in none of the installations TEP reached the final drinking water distribution system at significant concentrations. Overall, this study described the presence and removal of TEP in drinking water systems.  相似文献

This study, a randomized controlled trial, evaluated the effectiveness of free-standing air filters and window air conditioners (ACs) in 126 low-income households of children with asthma. Households were randomized into a control group, a group receiving a free-standing HEPA filter placed in the child's sleeping area, and a group receiving the filter and a window-mounted AC. Indoor air quality (IAQ) was monitored for week-long periods over three to four seasons. High concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and carbon dioxide were frequently seen. When IAQ was monitored, filters reduced PM levels in the child's bedroom by an average of 50%. Filter use varied greatly among households and declined over time, for example, during weeks when pollutants were monitored, filter use was initially high, averaging 84±27%, but dropped to 63±33% in subsequent seasons. In months when households were not visited, use averaged only 34±30%. Filter effectiveness did not vary in homes with central or room ACs. The study shows that measurements over multiple seasons are needed to characterize air quality and filter performance. The effectiveness of interventions using free-standing air filters depends on occupant behavior, and strategies to ensure filter use should be an integral part of interventions. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) increased particulate matter (PM) levels by about 14 μg/m3 and was often detected using ETS-specific tracers despite restrictions on smoking in the house as reported on questionnaires administered to caregivers. PM concentrations depended on season, filter usage, relative humidity, air exchange ratios, number of children, outdoor PM levels, sweeping/dusting, and presence of a central air conditioner (AC). Free-standing air filters can be an effective intervention that provides substantial reductions in PM concentrations if the filters are used. However, filter use was variable across the study population and declined over the study duration, and thus strategies are needed to encourage and maintain use of filters. The variability in filter use suggests that exposure misclassification is a potential problem in intervention studies using filters. The installation of a room AC in the bedroom, intended to limit air exchange ratios, along with an air filter, did not lower PM levels more than the filter alone.  相似文献

Although moderate regular aerobic exercise is recommended for good health, adverse health consequences may be incurred by people who exercise in areas with high ambient pollution, such as in the centres of large cities with dense traffic. The exposure of children during exercise is of special concern because of their higher sensitivity to air pollutants. The size-segregated mass concentration of particulate matter was measured in a naturally ventilated elementary school gym during eight campaigns, seven to ten days long, from November 2005 through August 2006 in a central part of Prague (Czech Republic). The air was sampled using a five-stage cascade impactor. The indoor concentrations of PM2.5 recorded in the gym exceeded the WHO recommended 24-hour limit of 25 μg m−3 in 50% of the days measured. The average 24-h concentrations of PM2.5 (24.03 μg m−3) in the studied school room did not differ much from those obtained from the nearest fixed site monitor (25.47 μg m−3) and the indoor and ambient concentrations were closely correlated (correlation coefficient 0.91), suggesting a high outdoor-to-indoor penetration rate. The coarse indoor fraction concentration (PM2.5–10) was associated with the number of exercising pupils (correlation coefficient 0.77), indicating that human activity is its main source. Considering the high pulmonary ventilation rate of exercising children and high outdoor particulate matter concentrations, the levels of both coarse and fine aerosols may represent a potential health risk for sensitive individuals during their physical education performed in naturally ventilated gyms in urban areas with high traffic intensity.  相似文献

The formaldehyde emission rates from building and furniture materials in 24 student rooms were measured using a passive sampling method parallel to a monitoring of indoor and outdoor concentrations. This passive tool represents an interesting alternative to standard dynamic methods as it is easier to implement for field investigation. Although the indoor formaldehyde concentrations (21.3 μg m−3 on average) are at a medium level, consistent with earlier published results, the recorded emission rates are globally low (from 1 to 15 μg m−2 h−1) except for the high emission of beds identified in one building (87.3 μg m−2 h−1 on average). Data analysis revealed that the emissions released from furniture and building materials are the main contributions to the indoor formaldehyde concentrations with 45 and 43% on average. The high formaldehyde levels in rooms are mainly explained by the rise of formaldehyde emissions from indoor materials with temperature although the buildings and the furniture were older than 7 years. Basing on the data of emission rates, outdoor concentrations and air exchange rates, a one compartment mass balance model was used to calculate indoor concentrations. A good agreement was found between the predictions of the model and the measured indoor concentrations. This methodology could lead to the definition of arrangements for the efficient reduction of indoor formaldehyde levels.  相似文献

Reconnaissance of selected PPCP compounds in Costa Rican surface waters   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Eighty-six water samples were collected in early 2009 from Costa Rican surface water and coastal locations for the analysis of 34 pharmaceutical and personal care product compounds (PPCPs). Sampling sites included areas receiving treated and untreated wastewaters, and urban and rural runoff. PPCPs were analyzed using a combination of solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The five most frequently detected compounds were doxycycline (77%), sulfadimethoxine (43%), salicylic acid (41%), triclosan (34%) and caffeine (29%). Caffeine had the maximum concentration of 1.1 mg L−1, possibly due to coffee bean production facilities upstream. Other compounds found in high concentrations include: doxycycline (74 μg L−1), ibuprofen (37 μg L−1), gemfibrozil (17 μg L−1), acetominophen (13 μg L−1) and ketoprofen (10 μg L−1). The wastewater effluent collected from an oxidation pond had similar detection and concentrations of compounds compared to other studies reported in the literature. Waters receiving runoff from a nearby hospital showed higher concentrations than other areas for many PPCPs. Both caffeine and carbamazepine were found in low frequency compared to other studies, likely due to enhanced degradation and low usage, respectively. Overall concentrations of PPCPs in surface waters of Costa Rica are inline with currently reported occurrence data from around the world, with the exception of doxycycline.  相似文献

Emissions from indoor biomass burning are a major public health concern in developing areas of the world. Less is known about indoor air quality, particularly airborne endotoxin, in homes burning biomass fuel in residential wood stoves in higher income countries. A filter‐based sampler was used to evaluate wintertime indoor coarse particulate matter (PM10‐2.5) and airborne endotoxin (EU/m3, EU/mg) concentrations in 50 homes using wood stoves as their primary source of heat in western Montana. We investigated number of residents, number of pets, dampness (humidity), and frequency of wood stove usage as potential predictors of indoor airborne endotoxin concentrations. Two 48‐h sampling events per home revealed a mean winter PM10‐2.5 concentration (± s.d.) of 12.9 (± 8.6) μg/m3, while PM2.5 concentrations averaged 32.3 (± 32.6) μg/m3. Endotoxin concentrations measured from PM10‐2.5 filter samples were 9.2 (± 12.4) EU/m3 and 1010 (± 1524) EU/mg. PM10‐2.5 and PM2.5 were significantly correlated in wood stove homes (r = 0.36, P < 0.05). The presence of pets in the homes was associated with PM10‐2.5 but not with endotoxin concentrations. Importantly, none of the other measured home characteristics was a strong predictor of airborne endotoxin, including frequency of residential wood stove usage.  相似文献

Sediment dredging and Phoslock® addition were applied individually and in combination in an enclosure experiment in a Dutch hypertrophic urban pond. These measures were applied to control eutrophication and reduce the risk of exposure to cyanobacterial toxins. Over the 58 days course of the experiment, cyanobacteria (predominantly Microcystis aeruginosa) gradually decreased until they dropped below the level of detection in the combined treated enclosures, they were reduced in dredged enclosures, but remained flourishing in controls and Phoslock® treated enclosures. Cyanobacteria were, however, less abundant in the enclosures (medians chlorophyll-a 30-87 μg l−1) than in the pond (median chlorophyll-a 162 μg l−1), where also a thick surface scum covered one-third of the pond for many weeks.Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations were significantly lower in the combined dredged and Phoslock® treated enclosures than in controls. Median SRP concentrations were 24 μg P l−1 in the combined treatment, 58 μg P l−1 in dredged enclosures, and 90 μg P l−1 in controls and 95 μg P l−1 in Phoslock® treated enclosures. Hence, the combined treatment was most effective in decreasing SRP and TP, and in lowering cyanobacterial biomass.Microcystin (MC) concentrations were analyzed by LC-MS/MS. MC concentrations and cyanobacterial biomass were positively correlated in all treatments. Mean MC concentrations in controls (71 μg l−1), Phoslock® treated enclosures (37 μg l−1) and dredged enclosures (25 μg l−1) exceeded the provisional guideline of 20 μg l−1, whereas mean MC concentrations were 13 μg l−1 in the combined treated enclosures. All samples contained the MC variants dmMC-RR, MC-RR, MC-YR, dmMC-LR and MC-LR; traces of MC-LY and nodularin were detected in few samples. The different treatments did not change the relative contribution of the variants to the MC pool; MC profiles in all treatments and the pond showed dominance of MC-RR followed by MC-LR. In the surface scum of the pond, total MC concentration was extremely high (64000 μg l−1 or 1300 μg g−1 DW), which poses a serious health hazard to children playing on the banks of the pond. Based on our results and pond characteristics, we propose combined sediment dredging and Phoslock® addition, fish removal and strong reduction of duck feeding by the neighborhood as most promising measures controlling cyanobacterial hazards in this pond.  相似文献

Flow-through reactors with manganese oxides were examined for their capacity to remove 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) at μg L−1 and ng L−1 range from synthetic wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. The mineral MnO2 reactors removed 93% at a volumetric loading rate (BV) of 5 μg EE2 L−1 d−1 and from a BV of 40 μg EE2 L−1 d−1 on, these reactors showed 75% EE2 removal. With the biologically produced manganese oxides, only 57% EE2 was removed at 40 μg EE2 L−1 d−1. EE2 removal in the ng L−1 range was 84%. The ammonium present in the influent (10 mg N L−1) was nitrified and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were found to be of prime importance for the degradation of EE2. Remarkably, EE2 removal by AOB continued for a period of 4 months after depleting NH4+ in the influent. EE2 removal by manganese-oxidizing bacteria was inhibited by NH4+. These results indicate that the metabolic properties of nitrifiers can be employed to polish water containing EE2 based estrogenic activity.  相似文献

Phosphorus limitation has been demonstrated for heterotrophic growth in groundwater, in drinking water production and distribution systems, and for nitrification of surface water treatment at low temperatures. In this study, phosphorus limitation was tested, in the Netherlands, for nitrification of anaerobic groundwater rich in iron, ammonium and orthophosphate. The bioassay method developed by Lehtola et al. (1999) was adapted to determine the microbially available phosphorus (MAP) for nitrification. In standardized batch experiments with an enriched mixed culture inoculum, the formation of nitrite and nitrate and ATP and the growth of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB; as indicated by qPCR targeting the amoA-coding gene) were determined for MAP concentrations between 0 and 100 μg PO4-P L−1. The nitrification and microbial growth rates were limited at under 100 μg PO4-P L−1 and virtually stopped at under 10 μg PO4-P L−1. In the range between 10 and 50 μg PO4-P L−1, a linear relationship was found between MAP and the maximum nitrification rate. AOB cell growth and ATP formation were proportional to the total ammonia oxidized. Contrary to Lehtola et al. (1999), biological growth was very slow for MAP concentrations less than 25 μg PO4-P L−1. No full conversion nor maximum cell numbers were reached within 19 days. In full-scale groundwater filters, most of the orthophosphate was removed alongside with iron. The remaining orthophosphate appeared to have only limited availability for microbial growth and activity. In some groundwater filters, nitrification was almost totally prevented by limitation of MAP. In batch experiments with filtrate water from these filters, the nitrification process could be effectively stimulated by adding phosphoric acid.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of animal waste at a low range of mesophilic conditions has not been well described to date. In this study, laboratory-scale semi-continuously fed anaerobic digesters treating pig manure were operated at 28 and 38 °C with organic loading rates ranging from 1.3 to 4.3 g ODM L−1 d−1. The estimated biomass yield was higher at 28 °C (0.065 g VSS g−1 CODremoved) than at 38 °C (0.016 g VSS g−1 CODremoved). The resulting calculated biomass concentration range at 28 and 38 °C was 1.2–2.4 and 0.3–0.6g VSS L−1, respectively, which fitted well with a Michaelis–Menten type function. These VSS results are one or two orders of magnitude lower than previously reported for manure-fed digesters. Although maximum specific substrate utilisation rate at 38 °C is five-fold that at 28 °C, higher biomass yield in the digester at 28 °C seemed to compensate for the adverse effects of lower temperature on digester performance.  相似文献

The paper describes the aerobic degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ), an anti-epileptic drug widely found in aquatic environment, from Erlenmeyer flask to bioreactor by the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor. In Erlenmeyer flask, CBZ at approximately 9 mg L−1 was almost completely eliminated (94%) after 6 d, while at near environmentally relevant concentrations of 50 μg L−1, 61% of the contaminant was degraded in 7 d. Acridone, acridine, 10,11-dihydro-10,11-dihydroxy-CBZ, and 10, 11-epoxy-CBZ were identified as major metabolites, confirming the degradation of CBZ. The degradation process was then carried out in an air pulsed fluidized bioreactor operated in batch and continuous mode. Around 96% of CBZ was removed after 2 days in batch mode operation, and 10,11-dihydro-10,11-epoxycarbamazepine was found as unique metabolite. In bioreactor operated in continuous mode with a hydraulic retention time of 3 d, 54% of the inflow concentration (approx. 200 μg L−1) was reduced at the steady state (25 d) with a CBZ degradation rate of 11.9 μg CBZ g−1 dry weight d−1. No metabolite was detected in the culture broth. Acute toxicity tests (Microtox) indicated that the final culture broth in both batch and continuous mode operation were non toxic, with 15 min EC50 values of 24% and 77%, respectively.  相似文献

The application of microelectrodes to measure oxygen and nitrite concentrations inside granules operated at 20 °C in a CANON (Complete Autotrophic Nitrogen-removal Over Nitrite) reactor and the application of the FISH (Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization) technique to cryosectioned slices of these granules showed the presence of two differentiated zones inside of them: an external nitrification zone and an internal anammox zone. The FISH analysis of these layers allowed the identification of Nitrosomonas spp. and Candidatus Kuenenia Stutgartiensis as the main populations carrying out aerobic and anaerobic ammonia oxidation, respectively.Concentration microprofiles measured at different oxygen concentrations in the bulk liquid (from 1.5 to 35.2 mg O2 L−1) revealed that oxygen was consumed in a surface layer of 100-350 μm width. The obtained consumption rate of the most active layers was of 80 g O2 (Lgranule)−1 d−1. Anammox activity was registered between 400 and 1000 μm depth inside the granules. The nitrogen removal capacity of the studied sequencing batch reactor containing the granular biomass was of 0.5 g N L−1 d−1. This value is similar to the mean nitrogen removal rate obtained from calculations based on in- and outflow concentrations.Information obtained in the present work allowed the establishment of a simple control strategy based on the measurements of NH4+ and NO2 in the bulk liquid and acting over the dissolved oxygen concentration in the bulk liquid and the hydraulic retention time of the reactor.  相似文献

The interference of ammonia with chlorination is a prevalent problem encountered by water treatment plants located throughout South East Asia. The efficacy of high rate, plastic-packed trickling filters as a pre-treatment process to remove low concentrations of ammonia from polluted surface water was investigated. This paper presents the findings from a series of pilot experiments, which were designed to investigate the effect of specific conditions—namely low ammonia feed concentrations (0.5-5.0 mg NH4-N L−1), variations in hydraulic surface load (72.5-145 m3 m−2 d−1) and high suspended solid loads (51 ± 25 mg L−1)—on filter nitrifying capacity. The distribution of nitrification activity throughout a trickling filter bed was also characterised. Results confirmed that high hydraulic rate trickling filters were able to operate successfully, under ammonia-N concentrations some 10- to 50-fold lower and at hydraulic loading rates 30-100 times greater than those of conventional wastewater applications. Mass transport limitations posed by low ammonia-N concentrations on overall filter performance were insignificant, where apparent nitrification rates (0.4-1.6 g NH4-N m−2 d−1), equivalent to that of wastewater filters were recorded. High inert suspended solid loadings had no adverse effect on nitrification. Results imply that implementation of high rate trickling filters at the front-end of a water treatment train would reduce the ammonia-related chlorine demand, thereby offering significant cost savings.  相似文献

Hairdressers are exposed to particulate matter (PM), a known air pollutant linked to adverse health effects. Still, studies on occupational PM exposures in hair salons are sparse. We characterized indoor air PM concentrations in three salons primarily serving an African/African American (AA) clientele, and three Dominican salons primarily serving a Latino clientele. We also assessed the performance of low-cost sensors (uRAD, Flow, AirVisual) by comparing them to high-end sensors (DustTrak) to conduct air monitoring in each salon over 3 days to quantify work shift concentrations of PM2.5, respirable PM (RPM), and PM10. We observed high spatial and temporal variability in 30-min time-weighted average (TWA) RPM concentrations (0.18–5518 μg/m3). Readings for the uRAD and AirVisual sensors were highly correlated with the DustTrak (R2 = 0.90–0.99). RPM 8-hour TWAs ranged from 18 to 383 µg/m3 for AA salons, and 9–2115 µg/m3 for Dominican salons. Upper 95th percentiles of daily RPM exposures ranged from 439 to 2669 µg/m3. The overall range of 30-min TWA PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations was 0.13–5497 and 0.36-,541 μg/m3, respectively. Findings suggest that hairdressers could be overexposed to RPM during an 8-hour shift. Additional comprehensive monitoring studies are warranted to further characterize temporal and spatial variability of PM exposures in this understudied occupational population.  相似文献

Basements can influence indoor air quality by affecting air exchange rates (AERs) and by the presence of emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants. We characterized VOC levels, AERs, and interzonal flows between basements and occupied spaces in 74 residences in Detroit, Michigan. Flows were measured using a steady‐state multitracer system, and 7‐day VOC measurements were collected using passive samplers in both living areas and basements. A walk‐through survey/inspection was conducted in each residence. AERs in residences and basements averaged 0.51 and 1.52/h, respectively, and had strong and opposite seasonal trends, for example, AERs were highest in residences during the summer, and highest in basements during the winter. Airflows from basements to occupied spaces also varied seasonally. VOC concentration distributions were right‐skewed, for example, 90th percentile benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and limonene concentrations were 4.0, 19.1, 20.3, and 51.0 μg/m3, respectively; maximum concentrations were 54, 888, 1117, and 134 μg/m3. Identified VOC sources in basements included solvents, household cleaners, air fresheners, smoking, and gasoline‐powered equipment. The number and type of potential VOC sources found in basements are significant and problematic, and may warrant advisories regarding the storage and use of potentially strong VOCs sources in basements.  相似文献

In order to compare the magnitudes and health impacts of arsenic and other toxic trace elements in well water, groundwater and hair samples were collected from three areas with different arsenic exposure scenarios in the Mekong River basin of Cambodia. Ampil commune in Kampong Cham province was selected as an uncontaminated area, Khsarch Andaet commune in Kratie province was selected as a moderately contaminated area, and Kampong Kong commune in Kandal Province was selected as an extremely contaminated area. Results of ICP-MS analyses of the groundwater samples revealed that As, Mn, Fe and Ba concentrations were significantly different among the three study areas (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.0001). Out of 46 observed wells in the Kandal province study area, 100% detected As > 50 μg L−1 and Fe > 300 μg L−1; 52.17% had Mn > 400 μg L−1 and 73.91% found Ba > 700 μg L−1. In the Kratie province study area (n = 12), 25% of wells showed elevated arsenic levels above 10 μg L−1 and 25% had Mn > 400 μg L−1, whereas samples from Kampong Cham province study area (n = 18) were relatively clean, with As < 10 μg L−1. A health risk assessment model derived from the USEPA was applied to calculate individual risks resulting from drinking groundwater. Computational results indicated that residents from Kandal Province study area (n = 297) confronted significantly higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks than those in Kratie (n = 89) and Kampong Cham (n = 184) province study areas (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.0001). 98.65% of respondents from the Kandal province study area were at risk for the potential non-cancer effect and an average cancer risk index was found to be 5 in 1000 exposure. The calculations also indicated that, in the Kratie province study area, 13.48% of respondents were affected by non-cancer health risks and 33.71% were threatened by cancer, whereas none of respondents in the Kampong Cham province study area appeared to have non-carcinogenic effect. Positively significant correlations of the arsenic content in scalp hair (Ash) with both arsenic levels in groundwater (Asw) (rs (304) = 0.757, p < 0.0001) and individual average daily doses (ADD) of arsenic (rs (304) = 0.763, p < 0.0001) undoubtedly indicated that arsenic accumulation in the bodies of Cambodia residents in the Mekong River basin was mainly through a groundwater drinking pathway. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive report comparing individual health risk assessments of arsenic exposure through a groundwater drinking pathway to enriched arsenic levels from groundwater in the Mekong River basin, Cambodia. This study indicates that elevated arsenic concentrations in groundwater may lead to thousands of cases of arsenicosis in the near future if mitigating actions are not taken.  相似文献
