In an international collaboration, a long-term radon concentration survey was carried out in schools of Southern Serbia with radon detectors prepared, etched and read-out in Italy. In such surveys it is necessary to evaluate measurement precision in field conditions, and to check whether quality assurance protocols were effective in keeping uncertainties under control, despite the complex organisation of measurements. In the first stage of the survey, which involves only some of the total number of municipalities, paired detectors were exposed in each monitored room in order to experimentally assess measurement precision. Paired passive devices (containing CR-39 detectors) were exposed for two consecutive 6-month periods. Two different measurement systems were used to read out CR-39s of the first and second period, respectively. The median of the coefficient of variation (CV) of the measured exposures was 8 % for 232 paired devices of the first 6-month period and 4 % for 242 paired devices of the second 6-month period, respectively. This difference was mainly due to a different track count repeatability of the two read-out systems, which was 4 and 1 %, respectively, as the median value of CV of repeated countings. The in-field measured precision results are very similar to the precision assessed in calibration conditions and are much lower than the room-to-room variation of radon concentration in the monitored schools. Moreover, a quality assurance protocol was followed to reduce extra-exposures during detector transport from Rome to schools measured and back.  相似文献

Radon is known to cause lung cancer in humans; however, there remain uncertainties about the effects associated with residential exposures. This case-control study of residential radon and lung cancer was conducted in five counties in New Jersey and involved 561 cases and 740 controls. A year long alpha-track detector measurement of radon was completed for approximately 93% of all residences lived in at the time of interview (a total of 2,063). While the odds ratios (ORs) for whole data were suggestive of an increased risk for exposures >75 Bq m(-3), these associations were not statistically significant. The adjusted excess OR (EOR) per 100 Bq m(-3) was -0.13 (95% CI: -0.30 to 0.44) for males, 0.29 (95% CI: -0.12 to 1.70) for females and 0.05 (95% CI: -0.14 to 0.56) for all subjects combined. An analysis of radon effects by histological type of lung cancer showed that the OR was strongest for small/oat cell carcinomas in both males and females. There was no statistical heterogeneity of radon effects by demographic factors (age at disease occurrence, education level and type of respondent). Analysis by categories of smoking status, frequency or duration did not modify the risk estimates of radon on lung cancer. The findings of this study are consistent with an earlier population-based study of radon and lung cancer among New Jersey women, and with the North American pooling of case control radon seven studies, including the previous New Jersey study. Several uncertainties regarding radon measurements and assumptions of exposure history may have resulted in underestimation of a true exposure-response relationship.  相似文献

The results of measurement of atmospheric radon concentration in Beijing, China, are reported. Continuous observation was performed hourly throughout 2003 to provide data on annual average radon concentration as well as the variation of radon concentration. An arithmetic annual mean value of 14.1 +/- 5.5 Bq m(-3) was obtained. The value was slightly higher than the world average and the national average. For the monthly average radon concentration, the maximum was 18.5 +/- 5.0 Bq m(-3) in November, while the minimum was 9.9 +/- 4.1 Bq m(-3) in May. Diurnal variation was also observed, and the average daily pattern of radon concentration consisted of a minimum in the late afternoon and a maximum in the early hours of the morning.  相似文献

The paper describes the procedure and results of measurement of one of the basic properties of unalloyed plutonium, namely, the heat of α → β transformation. The measurements are performed under conditions of unsteady-state volumetric heating of plutonium in the process of neutron irradiation of samples in a pulsed nuclear reactor (PNR). The experiments are aimed at determining the preassigned degree of phase transformation (PT) of plutonium by the variation of electric resistance of sample measured at one and the same temperature of ~100 °C in the state of α phase prior to neutron irradiation and in the state of metastable β phase after neutron irradiation, completion of α → β transformation, and cooling down to this temperature of measurement. The desired degree of PT is attained in the process of pulsed volumetric heating of plutonium under neutron irradiation of sample in the channel of the core of Yaguar PNR. The value of fission energy of plutonium nuclei released in the sample is determined by measuring the absolute heating of the working medium of the monitor-detector made of plutonium dioxide and the relative activity of indicators made of uranium-235 oxide and located on the working sample and on the monitor-detector. The results of measurement of energy input and of respective variation of electric resistance due to heating and to partial or complete α → β transformation of plutonium in a sequence of experiments with neutron irradiation of sample in the PNR are used for constructing the dependence of variation of electric resistance of sample on energy input. This dependence is linear in the range of values of measured parameters corresponding to α → β transformation of plutonium. The slope of straight line reflects the ratio of variation of electric resistance in the case of phase transformation to the heat of α → β transformation. It follows from the experimentally measured slope and value of variation of electric resistance in the case of complete phase transformation that the heat of α → β transformation is ΔH αβ = 3.35 ± 0.1 kJ/mol, which agrees well with the adopted reference value of ΔH tr = 3.45 ± 0.08 kJ/mol.  相似文献

High indoor radon concentration means an increased risk of developing lung cancer. When high radon levels are present in a dwelling, the major source is normally the soil. Therefore, it is useful to know the radon concentration field in the soil underneath a building. A steady-state two-dimensional radon transport model has been used to calculate the effect of a reference building on the soil radon concentration, and the influence of soil parameters on radon entry through a single crack in the basement. Both advective and diffusive flows are considered. Away from the building, the well-known undisturbed soil radon concentration profile has been obtained, while under the house the radon level is increased. A variability analysis around the reference site has shown that the most relevant soil parameters on the radon flux at the top of the crack are, in this case, effective diffusion coefficient, soil gas-permeability and deep soil radon concentration.  相似文献

Radon risk assessment is carried out by means of accurate measurements with active or passive instrumentation. All radon detectors must be calibrated and tested using a radon chamber containing a known concentration of radon produced by specific sources of (226)Ra. Some chambers can also be used to test the response of detectors as a function of environmental conditions. In this case, a calibration curve can be inferred with respect to change in one of the considered parameters. For this aim, a new radon chamber was designed and realised to perform calibration and to study the detector response in a large range of variation of the environmental parameters (pressure, 700-1100 mbar; temperature, 5-50°C; humidity, 10-90 %). The first experiments conducted to study the influence of environmental parameters on the detector response have shown flexibility and ease of use of the chamber.  相似文献

Radon diffusion coefficient is a material parameter which is usually used in the radon mitigation measures design. There are different approaches used for radon diffusion coefficient measurement and assessment. The International comparison measurement which was jointly organised by National Radiation Protection Institute and Faculty of Civil Engineering CTU Prague in 2009 and 2010 has registered 11 laboratories from all over the world. Three sets of samples of polyethylene damp-proof membranes were sent to these laboratories for measurement. Till today, the organisers received only five sets of results. In recent years uncertainty evaluation in measurements has achievedgreat importance. National and international standards offerguidelines to evaluate uncertainties, but these procedures are,until now, not well understood by the operators. This is becauseof the fact that a detailed uncertainty evaluation is not aneasy operation and a standard rule to apply in all cases isnot available. Every measurement procedure has its own uncertaintyevaluation. In this work, attention is focused upon the electretion chambers (EIC), widely used in radon concentration measurements.Measurements of gamma radiation sensitivity are performed ina secondary standard calibration laboratory and measurementof radon concentration sensitivity is performed in a radon chamber0.8 m3 in volume. Raw data are analysed to evaluate the calibrationfactors and the combined uncertainties are determined. 提出了一种基于递推随机有限元方法(RSFEM)的随机结构损伤识别方法。在定义了随机损伤指数概念的基础上,考虑模型误差的不确定性和测量噪声的影响,建立了关于随机损伤指数的控制方程。然后,利用RSFEM得到了结构随机损伤指数的统计特性。数值算例的结果显示,新的方法能在考虑模型误差和测量噪声的情况下对结构损伤进行有效识别,且在结构随机参数有较大涨落情况下,该方法仍能有效识别出结构损伤,识别结果与蒙特卡洛模拟解非常吻合。  相似文献

To better understand the effect of various test durations on indoor radon measurement results in Canada, Monte Carlo simulations were performed for test durations of 1 month (30 d), 2 months (61 d), 3 months (91 d) and 6 months (183 d). For each of the specified test durations, a total of 1500 Monte Carlo simulations were performed. Each simulation was compared with the result of a 1-y measurement. On average, the radon concentration estimated from a 30-d test differed by about ±22 % from the value of a 1-y measurement. The difference reduced to about ±17 % for a 61-d test, ±14 % for a 91-d test and ±9 % for a half-year test. Health Canada's recommendation of a 3-month radon test performed during the heating season resulted in an estimated radon concentration, on average, ~20 % higher than the value determined from a 1-y measurement. This ensures a conservative estimate of the annual average radon concentration, as there is some risk at any radon level. Therefore, to avoid an underestimation of radon exposure and to ensure appropriate levels of precision and accuracy are met, the results from this study suggest that a radon measurement duration of 3 months or longer during the heating season (from October through to April) is needed.  相似文献

Inhalation of radon ((222)Rn) and daughter products are a major source of natural radiation exposure. Keeping this in view, seasonal indoor radon measurement studies have been carried out in 68 dwellings belonging to 17 residential areas in Alexandria city, Egypt. LR-115 Type 2 films were exposed for four seasons of 3 months each covering a period of 1 y for the measurement of indoor radon levels. Assuming an indoor occupancy factor of 0.8 and a factor of 0.4 for the equilibrium factor of radon indoors, it was found that the estimated annual average indoor radon concentration in the houses surveyed ranged from 45 ± 8 to 90 ± 13 Bq m(-3) with an overall average value of 65 ± 10 Bq m(-3). The observed annual average values are greater than the world average of 40 Bq m(-3). Seasonal variation of indoor radon shows that maximum radon concentrations were observed in the winter season, whereas minimum levels were observed in the summer season. The season/annual ratios for different type of dwellings varied from 1.54 to 2.50. The mean annual estimated effective dose received by the residents of the studied area was estimated to be 1.10 mSv. The annual estimated effective dose is less than the recommended action level (3-10 mSv y(-1)).  相似文献

Two new single-family houses identified as insufficient with regard to existing radon barrier efficiency, have been selected for further examination. A complex set of radon diagnosis procedures has been applied in order to localise and quantify radon entry pathways into the indoor environment. Independent assessment of radon entry rate and air exchange rate has been carried out using the continuous indoor radon measurement and a specific tracer gas application. Simultaneous assessment of these key determining factors has turned out to be absolutely crucial in the context of major cause identification of elevated indoor radon concentration.  相似文献

Simultaneous indoor radon, radon-thoron progeny and high-resolution in situ gamma spectrometry measurements, with portable high-purity Ge detector were performed in 26 dwellings of Thessaloniki, the second largest town of Greece, during March 2003-January 2005. The radon gas was measured with an AlphaGUARD ionisation chamber (in each of the 26 dwellings) every 10 min, for a time period between 7 and 10 d. Most of the values of radon gas concentration are between 20 and 30 Bq m(-3), with an arithmetic mean of 34 Bq m(-3). The maximum measured value of radon gas concentration is 516 Bq m(-3). The comparison between the radon gas measurements, performed with AlphaGUARD and short-term electret ionisation chamber, shows very good agreement, taking into account the relative short time period of the measurement and the relative low radon gas concentration. Radon and thoron progeny were measured with a SILENA (model 4s) instrument. From the radon and radon progeny measurements, the equilibrium factor F could be deduced. Most of the measurements of the equilibrium factor are within the range 0.4-0.5. The mean value of the equilibrium factor F is 0.49 +/- 0.10, i.e. close to the typical value of 0.4 adopted by UNSCEAR. The mean equilibrium equivalent thoron concentration measured in the 26 dwellings is EEC(thoron) = 1.38 +/- 0.79 Bq m(-3). The mean equilibrium equivalent thoron to radon ratio concentration, measured in the 26 dwellings, is 0.1 +/- 0.06. The mean total absorbed dose rate in air, owing to gamma radiation, is 58 +/- 12 nGy h(-1). The contribution of the different radionuclides to the total indoor gamma dose rate in air is 38% due to 40K, 36% due to thorium series and 26% due to uranium series. The annual effective dose, due to the different source terms (radon, thoron and external gamma radiation), is 1.05, 0.39 and 0.28 mSv, respectively.  相似文献

The radon emanation and the granulation effect on the emanation rate of several building materials (ceramic plates, sand, red brick and siporex brick) with different (226)Ra concentrations were investigated. A ball mill was used to achieve different granulations of the materials. The particle size distributions were determined by a particle size analyser (Mastersizer 2000). The increase in the (222)Rn concentration inside a closed chamber (volume ≈5.4 × 10(-3) m(3)) due to emanation from each material with different granulations was measured by an alpha spectrometer (RAD7). Thus, time-dependent curves for radon concentrations were obtained. The highest radon emanation coefficient (27 %) was obtained for the siporex sample with the smallest grain size (0.34 μm). For the ceramic pads, the granulation effect was negligible and the emanation coefficient was very low (~0.4 %). The strongest influence of granulation on the radon emanation rate was found for the siporex brick sample.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was an assessment of external exposure indoors and its dependence on construction materials and indoor radon concentrations in Lithuanian living houses. Relationship of absorbed dose rate in air indoors and activity indexes of the most commonly used construction materials (wood, concrete and bricks) have been studied using results received in measurements done in >4700 rooms in 1995-2005. Possible connections of dose rate indoors with indoor radon concentrations are also discussed. Findings of this study helped to make an assessment of the mean value of effective dose of Lithuanian population due to external exposure indoors which is equal to 0.58 mSv y-1. The received data might also be used in improvement of quality of personal dosimetric measurements done in premises constructed of different construction materials.  相似文献

A radon detector of pulse-ionization chamber (PIC) type could have some sensitivity for thoron. Thus, the presence of thoron could interfere with precise measurement of radon. In the present study, effects of thoron on the most common type of PIC detector (commercial name AlphaGUARD) were investigated using an exposure chamber. The AlphaGUARD was exposed to a mixture of radon and thoron, together with a radon/thoron discriminative monitor that employs a silicon solid-state detector. The thoron sensitivity of the PIC detector was estimated by comparing the two detectors. As a result, the thoron sensitivity was about 10% compared with the radon sensitivity. In other words, the radon concentration (Bq m(-3)) measured with the PIC detector was approximately the sum of the actual radon concentration (Bq m(-3)) and 10% of the thoron concentration (Bq m(-3)). The sensitivity to thoron should be considered in measurements in thoron-enhanced areas.  相似文献

We report on the main results of a collaborative work devoted to the study of the uncertainties associated with Digital image correlation techniques (DIC). More specifically, the dependence of displacement measurement uncertainties with both image characteristics and DIC parameters is emphasised. A previous work [Bornert et al. (2009) Assessment of digital image correlation measurement errors: methodology and results. Exp. Mech. 49, 353–370] dedicated to situations with spatially fluctuating displacement fields demonstrated the existence of an ‘ultimate error’ regime, insensitive to the mismatch between the shape function and the real displacement field. The present work is focused on this ultimate error. To ensure that there is no mismatch error, synthetic images of in‐plane rigid body translation have been analysed. Several DIC softwares developed by or in use in the French community have been used to explore the effects of a large number of settings. The discrepancies between DIC evaluated displacements and prescribed ones have been statistically analysed in terms of random errors and systematic bias, in correlation with the fractional part τ of the displacement component expressed in pixels. Main results are as follows: (i) bias amplitude is almost always insensitive to subset size, (ii) standard deviation of random error increases with noise level and decreases with subset size and (iii) DIC formulations can be split up into two main families regarding bias sensitivity to noise. For the first one, bias amplitude increases with noise while it remains nearly constant for the second one. In addition, for the first family, a strong dependence of random error with τ is observed for noisy images.  相似文献

为建立氡测量的计量标准,研制以多功能的标准氡室为核心的氡测量仪检定/校准装置。采用氡浓度动态稳定技术以实现氡浓度的自动调控;设计用夹胶钢化玻璃制作氡室以减少箱体对氡的吸附,并具有良好的保温效果;设计制作温湿度调控系统和气溶胶发生与采集装置,实现氡子体放射性气溶胶的检测功能。装置氡室体积为4m3,氡浓度测量范围为370~20000Bq/m3,氡浓度值测量结果的相对扩展不确定度不超过5.8%,可用于测氡仪器的检定校准和氡子体放射性气溶胶的实验研究。  相似文献

A measurement method for measuring radon in water using the portable radon survey meter (RnSM) was developed. The container with propeller was used to stir the water samples and release radon from the water into the air in a sample box of the RnSM.
