Metallic bipolar plates are one of the promising alternatives to the graphite bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems. In this study, stainless steel (SS304, SS316L, and SS430), nickel (Ni 270), and titanium (Grade 2 Ti) plates with an initial thickness of 51 μm were experimented as bipolar plate substrate materials in corrosion resistance tests. In addition to unformed blanks, SS316L plates were formed with stamping and hydroforming processes to obtain bipolar plates under different process conditions (stamping force, hydroforming pressure, stamping speed, hydroforming pressure rate). These bipolar plates, then, were subjected to corrosion tests, and the results were presented and discussed in detail. Potentiodynamic polarizations were performed to observe corrosion resistance of metallic bipolar plates by simulating the anodic and cathodic environments in the PEMFC. In order to determine the statistical significance of the corrosion resistance differences between different manufacturing conditions, analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used on the corrosion current density (Icorr, μA cm−2) values obtained from experiments. ANOVA for the unformed substrate materials indicated that SS430 and Ni have less corrosion resistance than the other substrate materials tested. There was a significant difference between blank (unformed) and stamped SS316L plates only in the anodic environment. Although there was no noteworthy difference between unformed and hydroformed specimens for SS316L material, neither of these materials meet the Department of Energy‘s (DOE) target corrosion rate of ≤1 μA cm−2 by 2015 without coating. Finally, stamping parameters (i.e. speed and force levels) and hydroforming parameters (i.e. the pressure and pressure rate) significantly affected the corrosion behavior of bipolar plates.  相似文献

The main purpose of this study is to understand the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) characteristics of coated metallic bipolar plates (BPP) manufactured through stamping and hydroforming. To this goal, 51 μm thick SS316L stainless steel sheet blanks were formed into BPPs using two forming techniques (stamping and hydroforming); then these formed plates were coated with three different PVD coatings (CrN, TiN, ZrN) at three different coating thicknesses (0.1, 0.5 and 1 μm). Contact resistance of the formed and coated BPP samples were measured before and after they were exposed to the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) operating conditions (i.e., corrosive environment). ICR tests indicated that CrN coating increased the contact resistance of the samples, unexpectedly. TiN samples showed the best performance in terms of low ICR; however, their ICR dramatically increased after short-term exposure to corrosion. ZrN coating, as well, improved conductivity of the SS316L BPP samples and demonstrated similar ICR performance before and after exposure to corrosion.  相似文献

In order to reduce the cost, volume and weight of the bipolar plates used in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), more attention is being paid to metallic materials, among which 316L stainless steel (SS316L) is quite attractive. In this study, metallic Ta is deposited on SS316L using physical vapor deposition (PVD) to enhance the corrosion resistance of the bipolar plates. Simulative working environment of PEMFC is applied for testing the corrosion property of uncoated and Ta-coated SS316L. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical methods (potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarization) are also used for analyzing characteristics of uncoated and Ta-coated SS316L. Results show that, Ta-coated SS316L has significantly better anticorrosion property than that of uncoated SS316L, with corrosion current densities of uncoated SS316L being 44.61 μA cm−2 versus 9.25 μA cm−2 for Ta-coated SS316L, a decrease of about 5 times. Moreover, corrosion current densities of Ta-coated SS316L in both simulative anode (purged with H2) and cathode (purged with air) conditions are smaller than those of uncoated SS316L.  相似文献

Bipolar plates (BPPs) made of stainless steels preferred in PEM Fuel Cell (PEMFC) applications due to their high electrical conductivity, low material and production costs, low weight and mechanical strength. However, their corrosion resistances are not at desired levels for real PEMFC working conditions. To overcome this issue, different coating types are suggested. In this study, corrosion resistance behavior of 51 μm-thick SS316L metallic bipolar plates that were coated with the three different PVD coatings (TiN, CrN, and ZrN) at three thicknesses (0.1 μm, 0.5 μm, and 1 μm), and then were formed with two different manufacturing processes (stamping and hydroforming) investigated. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic corrosion experiments were performed on the coated-formed SS316L plates, and coated-unformed blanks. Corrosion test results indicate that 1 μm ZrN coating demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance among the tested cases regardless of the manufacturing process employed. Moreover, hydroformed bipolar plates exhibited higher corrosion resistance than the stamped BPPs, but lower than the blank samples. Hardness measurements were also performed on the coated samples and resulted in higher corrosion resistance for harder surfaces.  相似文献

Polypyrrole is one of the most important conductive polymers because it is easily oxidized, water soluble and commercially available. Also, polypyrrole coatings have potential applications in batteries, fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, anti-corrosion coatings and drug delivery systems. In this study, a very thin gold layer was first coated on SS316L, and then a polypyrrole coating was laid on top. The nucleation and growth mechanisms of polypyrrole on the gold-coated SS316L were studied by electrochemical nucleation and growth techniques. SEM was used to characterize the polypyrrole coating morphology. Potentiodynamic tests were performed to determine the corrosion parameters of the polypyrrole coatings. Potentiostatic tests of the coated SS316L were conducted in simulated anode and cathode environments of a PEM fuel cell. The simulated anode environment was at a potential of about −0.1 V versus SCE purged with H2 and the simulated cathode environment was at a potential of about 0.6 V versus SCE purged with O2. After coating with Au and polypyrrole, the polarization resistance of SS316L is increased about six times, and the corrosion current density is decreased about seven times, compared to the base SS316L. Also, our calculations show that the metal ion concentration in solution for the polypyrrole/Au/SS316L had met the target of 10 ppm after 5000 h fuel cell operation.  相似文献

A physical vapor deposition (PVD) TiN coating has been used to increase the corrosion resistance of two stainless steel materials for bipolar plate application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Our earlier studies had shown that a TiN coating on SS410 and SS316L increased the corrosion resistance of SS410 and SS316L significantly. In this study, we examine how the substrate affects the corrosion of TiN-coated stainless steel in the simulated anode and cathode environments. Potentiodynamic and contact resistance test results show that the polarization resistance and contact resistance of TiN-coated SS410 and TiN-coated SS316L are almost the same. However, in the simulated anode condition, the corrosion current density of TiN-coated SS410 is positive and the corrosion current density of TiN-coated SS316L is negative. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) test results also show that the metal ion concentration is much higher for TiN-coated SS410 at the anode side. At the cathode side, the potentiostatic and ICP-OES tests show that the corrosion of TiN-coated SS410 and TiN-coated SS316L are in the same range. Therefore, the substrate has an effect on corrosion in the simulated anode working conditions of PEMFCs. In order to be the suitable bipolar plate materials, both the coating and substrate need to have a higher corrosion resistance.  相似文献

In order to reduce the cost, weight and volume of the bipolar plates, considerable attention is being paid to developing metallic bipolar plates to replace the non-porous graphite bipolar plates that are in current use. However, metals are prone to corrosion in the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell environments, which decreases the ionic conductivity of the membrane and lowers the overall performance of the fuel cells. In this study, TiN was coated on SS316L using a physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology (plasma enhanced reactive evaporation) to increase the corrosion resistance of the base SS316L. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical methods were used to characterize the TiN-coated SS316L. XRD showed that the TiN coating had a face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure. Potentiodynamic tests and electrochemical impedance tests showed that the corrosion resistance of SS316L was significantly increased in 0.5 M H2SO4 at 70 °C by coating with TiN. In order to investigate the suitability of these coated materials as cathodes and anodes in a PEMFC, potentiostatic tests were conducted under both simulated cathode and anode conditions. The simulated anode environment was −0.1 V versus SCE purged with H2 and the simulated cathode environment was 0.6 V versus SCE purged with O2. In the simulated anode conditions, the corrosion current of TiN-coated SS316L is −4 × 10−5 A cm−2, which is lower than that of the uncoated SS316L (about −1 × 10−6 A cm−2). In the simulated cathode conditions, the corrosion current of TiN-coated SS316L is increased to 2.5 × 10−5 A cm−2, which is higher than that of the uncoated SS316L (about 5 × 10−6 A cm−2). This is because pitting corrosion had taken place on the TiN-coated specimen.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is a promising technology to be incorporated in the production of green hydrogen, but one of its limitation to market penetration is the cost of bipolar plates (BPP).Aiming to reduce the cost of PEMWE stack, different surface engineered coating systems based on CrN/TiN, Ti/TiN, Ti and TiN deposited by physical vapor deposition on SS 316L, SS 904L and SS 321 were tested, as potential cost effective solutions to be implemented on bipolar plates. A corrosion evaluation has been carried out in anodic PEMWE conditions in order to determine the best substrate/coating combination for bipolar plates. Ti/TiN multi-layered coating on SS 321 shown the best performance with ?0.02% weight loss, current at 2 VSHE to 436 μA cm?2 and ICR after corrosion test to 9.9 mΩ cm2.  相似文献

The present work was focused on the corrosion properties and contact resistance behavior of poly(orthophenlyenediamine) (PoPD) coating on 316L SS bipolar plates. To reduce the corrosion rate and increase the interfacial conductivity of 316L SS bipolar plates, PoPD coating was deposited using an electropolymerization technique by the various monomer concentration of orthophenlyenediamine (oPD) on its surface. The presence of 1, 2, 4, 5- tetra substituted benzene nuclei of phenazine units in the polymer coating was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis has confirmed the (%) of chemical composition in PoPD coating. The results of scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the uniform and compact coating with complete cover on 316L SS. The corrosion properties were investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 2 ppm HF solution at 80 °C. The polarization test results showed that the PoPD coating reduced the corrosion current density both in the PEMFC anode and cathode environments. The charge transfer resistance values were in the order of 316L SS ? 0.02 M PoPD ? 0.06 M PoPD ? 0.04 M PoPD. A very low interfacial contact resistance and good adhesion strength was observed for 0.04 M PoPD coating. The higher contact angle of 0.04 M PoPD coating explained the hydrophobic property and more benefit of water management in the PEMFC environment. The results of the analysis of total metal ion releases clearly explained that the low level of metal ions released for 0.04 M PoPD coating. The overall studies revealed the PoPD coating with optimized 0.04 M oPD concentration showed best performance and provided more anodic protection to 316L SS bipolar plates.  相似文献

In this study, newly developed high manganese (Mn) and low nickel (Ni) austenitic stainless steels were investigated as an alternative to conventionally used SS 316L for bipolar plate applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Systematic studies on the corrosion behavior were carried out in simulated hydrogen and oxygen environments, for both half- and fuel-cell conditions. The Mn-based SS revealed nobler corrosion potential and comparable passive current densities to that of SS 316L. The passive current density of Mn-based SS is well within the DoE 2020 target of <1 μA cm−2. Though MnSS1 steel has lean Ni content, the addition of Mn and N is beneficial for improving the corrosion performance, which is comparable to SS 316L. The recorded ICR values for Mn SS1 and SS 316L are 234.6 ± 20 and 155 ± 20 mΩ cm2 at a compaction force of 140 N cm−2, respectively. Both the steels do not to meet the DoE ICR target of 10 mΩ cm2, which requires conductive coating or improvement in oxide conductivity. The performances of the steels (both Mn-SS and 316L SS) with varying thickness were also investigated in a single fuel cell condition with serpentine flow field design as bipolar plates with varying thickness (10, 5 and 2 mm). A maximum power density of 370 mW cm−2 was achieved with the Mn-based metallic bipolar plates, whereas SS 316L showed 354 mW cm−2. By changing the composition of austenitic stainless steel, that is, using Mn SS1 instead of SS 316L the overall fuel cell cost decreases by three times.  相似文献

Bipolar plate is one of the key components of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. In the present study, metallic plates are explored as bipolar plates in comparison to most generally used high-density graphite plates. Among various metals, stainless steel 316L is preferred due to its low cost, high strength, ease of machining and for its corrosion resistance characteristics. However, the challenges associated with metallic plates are high interfacial contact resistance due to passive oxide layer formation and possible corrosion product during operation in chemically harsh environments, which may contaminate the membrane electrode assembly. Three electrically conductive and corrosion resistant coatings namely Titanium Nitrides, Plasma Nitride, and Gold have been coated over the surface of stainless steel 316L metallic plate to overcome these challenges and to explore their impact on fuel cell performance using standard membrane electrode assemblies. These coatings are characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy along with interfacial contact resistance measurements. Further, the coated SS plates have been tested in real time polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell operation for their use as bipolar plates and their performances have been compared with the fuel cell comprising conventional graphite plates. A cell comprising Titanium Nitride, Gold and Plasma Nitride coated metallic plates exhibit a power density of 430, 720 & 268 mW cm−2 respectively, at an operating fuel cell potential of 0.6 V. Gold coated metallic plate shows comparable polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell performance in relation to conventional graphite plate.  相似文献

The high potential on the cathode side originated from the start-up/shut-down processes is the one that cannot be ignored, which will accelerate degradation of the bipolar plates and increase the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) eventually degrade the performance of PEMFCs. Therefore, the coating with corrosion resistance and conductivity is in urgent need of development. CrMoN coating is deposited on SS316L by closed field unbalanced magnetron sputter ion plating (CFUMSIP) with an aim to improve corrosion resistance and conductivity of SS316L under PEMFCs at shut-up/shut-down stages. In terms of high potential polarization test, the corrosion current density and ICR values are found to increase as the applied potential increases. The electrochemical degradation of CrMoN coated SS316L is investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After 40 days of immersion, the charge transfer resistance (Rct) of the CrMoN-4A coated SS316L is approximately 14 times greater than that of the uncoated SS316L and the ICR values are 11.2 mΩ cm2, indicating that the CrMoN-4A coating still has high corrosion resistance and well conductivity after long time immersion.  相似文献

The bipolar plate in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell helps to feed reactant gases to the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and collect current from the MEA. To facilitate these functions, the bipolar plate material should exhibit excellent electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance under fuel cell operating conditions, and simultaneously be of low-cost to meet commercialization enabling targets for automotive fuel cells. In the present work, we focus on the benchmarking of 10 nm gold coated SS316L (a.k.a. Au Nanoclad®) bipolar plate material through ex situ tests, which is provided by Daido Steel (Japan). The use of nanometer range Au coatings help to retain the noble properties of gold while significantly reducing the cost of the bipolar plate. The area specific resistance of the flat sample is 0.9 mΩ cm2 while that for the formed bipolar plate is 6.3 mΩ cm2 at compaction force of 60 N cm−2. The corrosion current density was less than 1 μA cm−2 at 0.8 V/NHE with air sparge simulating cathodic conditions. Additionally, gold coated SS316L showed anodic passivation of SS316L, thereby exhibiting robustness towards coating defects including surface scratches that may originate during the manufacturing of the bipolar plate. These series of ex situ tests indicate that 10 nm gold coated SS316L has good potential to be considered for commercial bipolar plates in automotive fuel cell stack.  相似文献

Stainless steel bipolar plates for the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell offer many advantages over conventional machined graphite. Austenitic stainless steel 316L is a traditional candidate for metal bipolar plates. However, the interfacial ohmic loss across the metallic bipolar plate and membrane electrode assembly due to corrosion increases the overall power output of PEMFC. Plasma nitriding was applied to improve the surface performance of 316L bipolar plates. A dense γNγN phase layer was formed on the surface. Polarization curves in the solution simulating PEMFC environment and interfacial contact resistance were measured. The results show that the corrosion resistance is improved and the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) is decreased after plasma nitriding. In comparison with the untreated 316L, the ICR between the carbon paper and passive film for the plasma-nitrided 316L decreases at the same condition and lowers with increasing pH value.  相似文献

In this study, the contact resistance (CR) and electrochemical properties of TiN, CrN and TiAlN electron beam physical vapor deposition (EBPVD) coatings and their stainless steel 316L (SS316L) substrate were investigated in a simulated proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell environment. The potentiodynamic polarization corrosion tests were conducted at 70 °C in 1 M H2SO4 purged with either O2 or H2, and the potentiostatic corrosion tests were performed under both simulated cathodic (+0.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode purged with O2) and anodic conditions (−0.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode purged with H2) for a long period (4 h). SEM was used to observe the surface morphologies of the samples after corrosion testing. All the TiN-, TiAlN- and CrN-coated SS316L showed a lower CR than the uncoated SS316L. While the corrosion performance of the coatings was dependent on the cathodic and anodic conditions, the CrN coating exhibited a higher (in the anodic environment) or similar (in the cathodic environment) corrosion resistance to the uncoated SS316L. Thus, the CrN-coated SS316L could potentially be used as a bipolar plate material in the PEM fuel cell environment. Although the EBPVD process greatly reduced number of pinholes in the coatings compared to other plasma enhanced reactive evaporations, future research efforts should be directed to eliminate the pinholes in the coatings for long-term durability in fuel cell applications.  相似文献

Arc ion plating (AIP) is applied to coat sandwich-like Cr/CrN/Cr multilayers on stainless steel 316L (SS316L) as bipolar plates for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Phase structure, hardness, adhesion property, interfacial contact resistance (ICR) between bipolar plates and carbon papers, and electrochemical corrosion property in the simulated PEMFC conditions are investigated. Cr phase with crystal plane of (1 1 0), (2 1 1), (3 2 2), and CrN phase with (3 2 1) are observed in the multilayer. The coating is found smooth, continuous and dense in cross-sectional observation by SEM, and the sandwiched structure of the coating is also confirmed by EDX results. Scratch tests show that the multilayer exhibits strong adhesion strength with steel substrate, which is beneficial to prevent layers from peeling off mechanically. After the coating treatment, the performance of the bipolar plate is greatly improved. Knoop hardness of the bipolar plates increases from 324 HK to 692 HK. The ICR decreases by one order of magnitude; furthermore, the corrosion resistance was also enhanced. Our analysis indicates that the improvement is attributed to high adhesion force of the smooth and dense coating and the synergistic function of Cr/CrN/Cr multilayer structure.  相似文献

The lower temperature chromizing treatment is developed to modify 316L stainless steel (SS 316L) for the application of bipolar plate in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The treatment is performed to produce a coating, containing mainly Cr-carbide and Cr-nitride, on the substrate to improve the anticorrosion properties and electrical conductivity between the bipolar plate and carbon paper. Shot peening is used as the pretreatment to produce an activated surface on stainless steel to reduce chromizing temperature. Anticorrosion properties and interfacial contact resistance (ICR) are investigated in this study. Results show that the chromized SS 316L exhibits better corrosion resistance and lower ICR value than those of bare SS 316L. The chromized SS 316L shows the passive current density about 3E−7 A cm−2 that is about four orders of magnitude lower than that of bare SS 316L. ICR value of the chromized SS 316L is 13 mΩ cm2 that is about one-third of bare SS 316L at 200 N cm−2 compaction forces. Therefore, this study clearly states the performance advantages of using chromized SS 316L by lower temperature chromizing treatment as bipolar plate for PEMFC.  相似文献

Anticorrosion coating for stainless steel (SS) and titanium bipolar plates were evaluated to improve the corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity in PEMFC. The PEMFC offers clean and environmentally friendly usage in electrical power systems. The bipolar plates contribute 60%–80% of the total components of PEMFC stack with electrical conductivity >100 S cm?1. Therefore, high conductivity and corrosion resistance are observed for long-term operations in PEMFC. Recent works has developed the cost-effective and feasible alternative materials to replace graphite bipolar plates. Metallic materials, such as SS and titanium, possess good electrical conductivity but poor corrosion resistance. Coating of SS and titanium bipolar plates can improve the corrosion resistance of metallic bipolar plates. Excellent performance of bipolar plates was recorded by using NbC coating for stainless steel materials. The ICR value using plasma surface alloying method was 8.47 mΩ cm2 with a low current density (Icorr) between 0.051 and 0.058 μA cm?2. The criteria for both current densities (<1 μA cm?2) and electrical conductivity (<10 mΩ cm2) met the DOE's 2020 technical targets. In addition, conventional air brush method can be used for fabricating multilayer coatings onto substrates because it is self-cleaning, low cost and offers high volume and large area production. Vapor deposition method, a highly advanced coating technology using PVD, suitable for coating bipolar plates because it is environmentally friendly and can be used in high temperatures, producing materials with good impact strength and excellent abrasion resistance. PEMFC cost is still too high for large scale commercialization, which is the cost of raw material and processing to allow fabrication of thinner plates contributes substantially to the total PEMFC cost. Some future works on fuel cell anticorrosion research with reasonable coating method is suggested to reduce the cost in order to facilitate the move toward commercialization especially for SS and titanium bipolar plates.  相似文献

A nanocomposite-carbon layer is coated onto the surface of 316L stainless steel (SS316) using a beam of accelerated C60 ions at low temperature. The coating is composed of textured graphite nanocrystals ranging in size from 1 to 2 nm, with the graphene plane normal to the coating plane; the nanocrystals are separated by amorphous carbon. This orientation of the graphene layer provides low film resistivity in the direction of the substrate normal. Corrosion resistance tests performed in aggressive anodic and cathodic environments of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) show that the nanocomposite-carbon coated SS316L exhibits better anticorrosion properties than does bare SS316L. The interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of the nanocomposite-carbon coated SS316L is 12 mΩ cm2, which is similar to that of graphite at a compaction force of 150 N cm−2 and lower than a target of ∼20 mΩ cm2. A low value of ICR is maintained even after corrosion tests in aggressive anodic and cathodic environments. The fabricated nanocomposite-carbon coated SS316L exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and low interfacial contact resistance under simulated PEMFC bipolar plate conditions.  相似文献

Metallic bipolar plates in PEM fuel cells offer low-volume, low-mass and low-cost stack fabrication in addition to superior durability when compared to composite bipolar plates, which suffer due to their much higher thickness and less durability. This study aims to address the formability and surface topography issues of metallic bipolar plates fabricated by stamping and hydroforming technologies. Particular emphasis was given to process repeatability, surface topology, and dimensional quality of bipolar plates that would greatly affect the corrosion and contact resistance characteristics. Thin metal sheets of several alloys (i.e., SS304, SS316L, SS430, Ni270, Ti grades 1 and 2) were used in the fabrication experiments. SS304 and SS316L were shown to possess better formability when compared to other alloys that were used in this study, while SS430 and Ti grade 2 demonstrated the worst among all. Channel formability was observed to be greatly affected by the hydroforming pressure, while it does not differ much above certain level of stamping force. The confocal microscopy analyses showed that surface roughness values of the formed samples were altered significantly when compared to the initial flat blanks. In general, increasing hydroforming pressure and stamping force yielded higher surface roughness values at channel peaks. In addition, the surface topography was shown to be influenced mainly by the pressure level rather than the pressure rate in hydroforming process.  相似文献
