Using Na+ form of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as coating materials, polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane as a substrate membrane, PFSA‐PVA/PSf hollow fiber composite membrane was fabricated by dip‐coating method. The membranes were post‐treated by two methods of heat treatment and by both heat treatment and chemical crosslinking. Maleic anhydride (MAC) aqueous solution was used as chemical crosslinking agent using 0.5 wt % H2SO4 as a catalyst. PFSA‐PVA/PSf hollow fiber composite membranes were used for the pervaporation (PV) separation of isopropanol (IPA)/H2O mixture. Based on the experimental results, PFSA‐PVA/PSf hollow fiber composite membrane is suitable for the PV dehydration of IPA/H2O solution. With the increment of heat treatment temperature, the separation factor increased and the total permeation flux decreased. The addition of PVA in PFSA‐PVA coating solution was favorable for the improvement of the separation factor of the composite membranes post‐treated by heat treatment. Compared with the membranes by heat treatment, the separation factors of the composite membranes post‐treated by both heat treatment and chemical crosslinking were evidently improved and reached to be about 520 for 95/5 IPA/water. The membranes post‐treated by heat had some cracks which disappeared after chemical crosslinking for a proper time. Effects of feed temperature on PV performance had some differences for the membranes with different composition of coating layer. The composite membranes with the higher mass fraction of PVA in PFSA‐PVA coating solution were more sensitive to temperature. It was concluded that the proper preparation conditions for the composite membranes were as follows: firstly, heated at 160°C for 1 h, then chemical crosslinking at 40°C for 3 h in 4% MAC aqueous solution. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF‐8) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and embedded into a chitosan (CS) polymeric matrix to prepare CS/ZIF‐8 mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs) in order to investigate the effect of ZIF‐8 addition as novel filler on the dehydration performance of the CS polymeric membrane. MMMs were evaluated using pervaporation (PV) dehydration of isopropanol (IPA). The synthesized ZIF‐8 nanoparticles and MMMs were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and a swelling study. The PV performance of the prepared MMMs with different ZIF‐8 loadings for IPA dehydration was investigated. For the ZIF‐8/CS MMMs, at the optimum loading the total flux increases significantly with low separation factor reduction. The good PV performance of the ZIF‐8‐incorporated CS membranes for dehydration of IPA is demonstrated.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blended with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was crosslinked with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to prepare organic–inorganic PVA/PEG/TEOS hybrid membranes. The membranes were then used for the dehydration of ethanol by pervaporation (PV). The physicochemical structure of the hybrid membranes was studied with Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT‐IR), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction WXRD, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PVA and PEG were crosslinked with TEOS, and the crosslinking density increased with increases in the TEOS content, annealing temperature, and time. The water permselectivity of the hybrid membranes increased with increasing annealing temperature or time; however, the permeation fluxes decreased at the same time. SEM pictures showed that phase separation took place in the hybrid membranes when the TEOS content was greater than 15 wt %. The water permselectivity increased with the addition of TEOS and reached the maximum at 10 wt % TEOS. The water permselectivity decreased, whereas the permeation flux increased, with an increase in the feed water content or feed temperature. The hybrid membrane that was annealed at 130°C for 12 h exhibited high permselectivity with a separation factor of 300 and a permeation flux of 0.046 kg m?2 h?1 in PV of 15 wt % water in ethanol. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel pervaporation (PV) membranes for ethanol dehydration were prepared by blend poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), followed by the crosslinking reaction with glutaraldehyde; the structure and miscibility of the blend membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry; the results indicated that the blends were miscible. The effect of feed concentration, operation temperature, crosslinking agent content, etc. on sorption performance and PV performance of the blend membrane is investigated. The membrane of CMCS/PVA blend ratio of 8 : 2 exhibited a high separation factor of 2959 with a reasonably high water flux value of 0.14 kg m?2h?1 at the azeotropic feed composition (95 wt % of ethanol) at a temperature of 45°C. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composite membranes were prepared from an aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and silver sulphate. The silver nanoparticles were generated in situ before crosslinking PVA matrix by reduction of silver ions using sodium borohydride. Physico‐chemical properties of the resulting composite membranes were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–vis spectroscopy (UV–vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and universal testing machine (UTM). The UV–vis spectrum shows a single peak at 410 nm due to surface plasmon absorption of silver nanoparticles. This surely specified that silver nanoparticles are generated in PVA matrix. The membranes were under go pervaporation (PV) for separation of water from isopropanol at different temperatures. The results indicated that hydrophilicity and amorphous nature of the membranes were increased with increasing silver nanoparticles in PVA matrix. The swelling and separation performance of the membranes were studied. Both permeation flux and separation factor were increased with increasing silver nanoparticles in PVA matrix. The results showed that the membrane containing 2.5 mass% of Ag salt exhibited excellent PV performance. The values of total flux and flux of water are almost closed to each other, indicating that membranes could be effectively used to break the azeotropic point of water‐isopropanol. The long‐term test was performed at room temperature and ascertained that membranes were durable up to 30 days for the dehydration of IPA. On the basis of the estimate Arrhenius activation energy values, the efficiency of the membranes was discussed. The calculated ΔHs values are negative for all the membranes, indicating that Longmuir's mode of sorption is predominant. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Novel polymeric mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by the incorporation of different amounts of 13X zeolite into a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend matrix. The resulting MMMs were characterized by attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to analyze the possible chemical reactions between NaCMC, PVA, zeolites, and glutaraldehyde. Scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the surface morphology, thermal stability, and crystallinity, respectively, of the membranes. Swellings studies were performed at 35°C, and we found that membranes containing 20 wt % zeolite showed higher values (960 kg m−2 h−1) at 17.5 wt % water in an isopropyl alcohol (IPA)/water mixture. Pervaporation (PV) experiments were also performed to evaluate the membrane performance in different compositions of the IPA/water mixture at 35°C. The mechanical properties were also tested, and we found that the optimum mechanical strength and percentage elongation at break were 42.24 N/mm2 and 3.38, respectively, for the membrane containing 15 wt % zeolite. The experimental results show that both the flux and selectivity increased with increasing zeolite content. The membrane containing 20 wt % zeolite showed the highest separation selectivity (5118) with a substantial flux of 0.121 kg m−2 h−1 at 35°C and with 10 wt % water in the feed; this suggested that the membranes could be used effectively to break the azeotropic point of the water–IPA mixture, so as to remove a small amount of water from IPA. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, itaconic acid (IA) was grafted onto poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate as an initiator at 45°C. The grafted PVA was characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. IA‐grafted PVA membranes were prepared with a casting method, and the permeation and separation characteristics of acetic acid/water mixtures were investigated with pervaporation (PV), evapomeation (EV) and temperature‐difference evapomeation (TDEV) methods. The effects of the feed composition, operating temperature, and temperature of the membrane surroundings on the permeation rate and separation factor for the acetic acid/water mixtures were studied. The permeation rates in EV were lower than those in PV, whereas the separation factors were higher. With the TDEV method, the permeation rates decreased and the separation factors increased as the temperature of the membrane surroundings decreased. The prepared membranes were also tested in PV, EV, and TDEV to separate the various compositions of the acetic acid/water mixtures (20–90 wt % acetic acid) at 40°C. The highest separation factor, 686, was obtained in TDEV with a 90 wt % acetic acid concentration in the feed. The activation energies of permeation in PV and EV were calculated to be 8.5 and 10.2 kcal/mol, respectively, for a 20 wt % acetic acid solution. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel hybrid organic–inorganic membranes were prepared via sol–gel reactions of quaternized poly(vinyl alcohol) (q‐PVA) and γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTEOS) for pervaporation dehydration of an 85 wt % ethanol solution. The physicochemical structure of the hybrid membranes was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG, and TEM. Nanofractal objects originated from self‐assembly of ammonium groups on the q‐PVA chains and amino groups in APTEOS can be observed on the surface of the hybrid membranes. When APTEOS/PVA ratio is 5% (wt/wt), the hybrid membrane has specific nervate networks on its surface and exhibits the highest separation factor. The hybrid membranes have better pervaporation performance than pristine q‐PVA membrane, and their permeation flux was found to increase linearly with increasing APTEOS content. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new kind of hollow titania spheres‐chitosan (hTiO2‐CS) hybrid membranes was prepared by a physical blending method. hTiO2 spheres were found to disperse well in the as‐prepared hTiO2‐CS hybrid membranes. Their incorporation can reduce the chitosan crystallinity and enhance slightly its hydrophilicity and thermal stability. Subsequently, hTiO2‐CS/PAN composite membranes comprising of the hTiO2‐CS hybrid membrane as separation layer and a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane as support layer were fabricated. Compared to the CS/PAN membrane, all of them exhibit a much better flux and separation factor for a 90 wt % aqueous solution of isopropanol at 80 °C. This promising kind of composite membranes may find potential application in the dehydration of alcohols.  相似文献

Flat‐sheet composite membranes were developed by the traditional phase inversion technique using poly;(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). PVA composite pervaporation (PV) membranes were prepared with crosslinked PVA selective layer and porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyether sulfone (PES) substrate layer material as supports for separating heat sensitivity substance ε‐caprolactam (CPL) from CPL/water mixtures. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinking agent. The effect of the composition of glutaraldehyde on membrane stability and structure were investigated. The operating parameters, such as feed concentration and operating temperature, remarkably affected PV performance of the composite membranes. The composite membranes with PVA casted on PAN (PVA/PAN) showed superior PV performance than that casted on PES (PVA/PES). This study has also shown that the type of porous support plays an important role in the PV performance. As a result, this work has presented the information needed of the behavior of PV membranes for dehydration applications of industrial caprolactam. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Miscibility studies of sodium carboxymethylcellulose/poly(vinyl alcohol) (NaCMC/PVA) blends of different compositions (100/0, 80 : 20, 60 : 40, 50 : 50, 40 : 60, 20 : 80, and 0 : 100) were investigated using viscometric method. NaCMC, PVA, and their blend membranes were prepared by solution‐casting technique and were then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA). The effect of blend composition on mechanical, swelling, and pervaporation results (flux and selectivity) was also investigated in this study. Attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) results showed that the blends are miscible over the entire studied composition range and further confirmed the crosslinking reaction with GA. FTIR studies reveal that the blends containing 50 : 50 (NaCMC/PVA) are an optimum miscible blend. Thermogravimetric analysis confirms that the thermal stability increased with increase in NaCMC content in NaCMC/PVA blend membrane. XRD and DSC showed a corresponding decrease in crystallinity and increase in melting point with increase in NACMC content, respectively. NaCMC/PVA blends of all the composition under study were used for dehydration of isopropyl alcohol at different compositions of IPA/water mixture (90 : 10, 87.5 : 12.5, 85 : 15, and 82.5 : 17.5) at 35°C. Swelling studies and PV results reveal that increase in NaCMC content in the blend leads to an increase in flux of water, whereas selectivity decreases. The optimum flux and selectivity were observed for the blend containing 50 : 50 NaCMC/PVA content at a feed ratio of 87.5 : 12.5 IPA/water. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel ion‐imprinted membranes were synthesized for selective removal and preconentration for Ag(I) ions from aqueous solutions. The membranes were obtained via crosslinking of chitosan (CS), PVA, and blend chitosan/PVA using glutaraldehyde (GA) as crosslinker. The FTIR spectra were used to confirm the membrane formation. Comparing with the nonimprinted membranes, Ag(I)‐imprinted CS and CS/PVA has higher removal capacity and selectivity for Ag+ ions. An enhancement in the Ag+ removal capacity by ~ 20% (from 77.8 to 94.4 mg g–1) and ~ 50% (from 83.9 to 125 mg g–1) was found in the Ag(I)‐imprinted CS and Ag(I)‐imprinted CS/PVA membranes, respectively, when compared with the nonimprinted membranes. Removal equilibra was achieved in about 40 min for the non‐ and ion‐imprinted CS/PVA. The pH and temperature significantly affected the removal capacity of ion‐imprinted membrane. The relative selectivity coefficient values of Ag+/Cu2+ and Ag+/Ni2+ are 9 and 10.7 for ion‐imprinted CS membrane and 11.1 and 15 for ion‐imprinted CS/PVA membrane when compared with nonimprinted membranes. The imprinted membranes can be easily regenerated by 0.01M EDTA and therefore can be reused at least five times with only 15% loss of removal capacity. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pervaporation(PV),as an environmental friendly and energy-saving separation technology, has been received increasing attention in recent years. This article reviews the preparation and application of macroporous ceramic-supported polymer composite pervaporation membranes. The separation materials of polymer/ceramic composite membranes presented here include hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) and hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA),chitosan(CS) and polyelectrolytes. The effects of ceramic support treatment, polymer solution properties, interfacial adhesion and incorporating or blending modification on the membrane structure and PV performance are discussed. Two in-situ characterization methods developed for polymer/ceramic composite membranes are also covered in the discussion. The applications of these composite membranes in pervaporation process are summarized as well, which contain the bio-fuels recovery, gasoline desulfuration and PV coupled proc-ess using PDMS/ceramic composite membrane, and dehydration of alcohols and esters using ceramic-supported PVA or PVA-CS composite membrane. Finally,a brief conclusion remark on polymer/ceramic composite mem-branes is given and possible future research is outlined.  相似文献

Polyvinyl alcohol–tetraethoxysilane–perfluorosulfonic acid (PVA–TEOS–PFSA) hybrid membrane was prepared by sol–gel method through PVA being modified doubly by PFSA and TEOS. With polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane as a substrate membrane, PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane was fabricated by dip-coating method for pervaporation (PV) dehydration of ethyl acetate (EAc) aqueous solution. The hybrid membrane was characterized by swelling degree, static contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscope. Effects of PFSA and TEOS contents in coating solution on PV performance of composite membrane were investigated, respectively. With increasing PFSA content, the permeation flux of composite membrane increased, while the separation factor decreased. Just the opposite, the increase of TEOS content resulted in the decrease in permeation flux and the increase in separation factor. In addition, the PV performances of composite membranes were also investigated at different feed temperatures and water concentrations in feed, respectively. The PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane, which was prepared from coating with PVA/PFSA mass ratio of 80/20 and TEOS content of 20 wt%, exhibited the permeation flux of 347.9 g m?2 h?1 and the separation factor of 2218 for PV dehydration of 2 wt% water of EAc solution at 40 °C.  相似文献

Polysulfone (PSF) hollow fiber membranes were spun by phase‐inversion method from 29 wt % solids of 29 : 65 : 6 PSF/NMP/glycerol and 29 : 64 : 7 PSF/DMAc/glycol using 93.5 : 6.5 NMP/water and 94.5 : 5.5 DMAc/water as bore fluids, respectively, while the external coagulant was water. Polyvinyl alcohol/polysulfone (PVA/PSF) hollow fiber composite membranes were prepared after PSF hollow fiber membranes were coated using different PVA aqueous solutions, which were composed of PVA, fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether (AEO9), maleic acid (MAC), and water. Two coating methods (dip coating and vacuum coating) and different heat treatments were discussed. The effects of hollow fiber membrane treatment methods, membrane structures, ethanol solution temperatures, and MAC/PVA ratios on the pervaporation performance of 95 wt % ethanol/water solution were studied. Using the vacuum‐coating method, the suitable MAC/PVA ratio was 0.3 for the preparation of PVA/PSF hollow fiber composite membrane with the sponge‐like membrane structure. Its pervaporation performance was as follows: separation factor (α) was 185 while permeation flux (J) was 30g/m2·h at 50°C. Based on the experimental results, it was found that separation factor (α) of PVA/PSF composite membrane with single finger‐void membrane structure was higher than that with the sponge‐like membrane structure. Therefore, single finger‐void membrane structure as the supported membrane was more suitable than sponge‐like membrane structure for the preparation of PVA/PSF hollow fiber composite membrane. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Pervaporative separation of acetone/water and isopropanol (IPA)/water systems has been studied in the water-lean range of composition of the feed mixtures. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with citric acid, adipic acid, maleic acid, glutaraldehyde, and glyoxal were used for this purpose. The sorption characteristics of all the membranes indicate that these membranes have a good sorption selectivity for water in view of the hydrophilic nature of PVA. The type of crosslinker used for crosslinking has been shown to have an important bearing on the permeation characteristics of the membranes. Thus, the trifunctional citric acid yields the highest selectivity but lowest flux. A comparison of the productive capacities of the various membranes indicates that the glutaraldehyde crosslinked membrane has the maximum productive capacity for IPA dehydration whereas maleic acid crosslinked membrane yields the highest productive capacity for acetone dehydration.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper deals with the development of compatible blend membranes of chitosan (CS) and gelatin (GL) by solution casting and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. The membranes were tested in pervaporation (PV) dehydration of 1,4-dioxane. Membrane characterizations by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and a universal testing machine were done to understand their physicochemical properties and for their suitability under PV conditions. The blend membranes were more water selective compared to pristine chitosan membrane at 30°C. Flux increased with increasing wt.% of water of the feed and also by increasing the gelatin content of the blend, but selectivity decreased. Sorption experiments gave information on the interaction between feed mixture and membrane polymers. Membranes of this study could extract nearly 97 wt.% of water from the feed mixture. Arrhenius activation parameters and diffusion coefficients estimated from a temperature dependence of PV results could explain the PV results satisfactorily.  相似文献

Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend membranes were prepared by the solution‐casting method to determine the effect of MWNTs with nanoscale empty inner space along the tube length on the pervaporation performance of a PVA membrane in the separation of alcohol/water mixtures. The blend membranes were then characterized with several analytical methods such as transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray diffractometry: Transmission electron microscopy showed that the MWNTs were homogeneously distributed through the PVA matrix. The glass‐transition temperature of the PVA membrane was increased from 69.21 to 78.53°C via blending with MWNTs. The crystallinity of the PVA matrix decreased with increasing MWNTs up to 5 wt % from 41 to 36%. The pervaporation properties of the blend membranes were completely different from those of the pure PVA membrane in the separation of water/ethanol mixtures. The flux of the membrane was increased with the amount of MWNTs, whereas the separation factor was maintained up to 1.0 wt % MWNTs. However, beyond that, it was reduced. These results suggested that two factors, the crystallinity of the membrane and the diameters of the MWNTs, affected the performance of the membranes. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the present work, dehydration of isopropanol was investigated by novel organic-inorganic nanocomposite membranes which were prepared through sol-gel reaction of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with γ-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTEOS) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The PVA chains were crosslinked by mixing silane coupling agents. This reaction between polymer chains and silanols agents could control degree of swelling of the nanocomposite membranes in aqueous isopropanol (IPA) solutions. The membranes were characterized by SEM and ATIR. Effects of APTEOS content in the membranes, feed concentration and temperature on pervaporation (PV) performance were investigated. It was found out that separation factor and permeation flux increase with increasing APTEOS content in the membranes. Arrhenius-type relationship was used for describing the temperature dependence of permeation flux. It was also found out that separation factor decreases with increasing temperature.  相似文献

Abstract

Blend membranes of chitosan (CS) and hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) were synthesized and cross‐linked with glutaraldehyde for the separation of 2‐butanol/water mixtures. The blends were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and wide‐angled X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) to assess the intermolecular interactions and occurrence of cross‐linking, respectively. The pervaporation performance was evaluated by varying experimental parameters such as feed composition, membrane thickness, and permeate pressure and found to be promising. Sorption studies were conducted to evaluate affinity and degree of swelling of both the unmodified and cross‐linked blend membranes in pure as well as binary mixtures of the two liquids. The blends were found to have good potential for breaking the aqueous azeotrope of 2‐butanol (77 wt.%). Upon cross‐linking, the blend membranes exhibited a substantial improvement in performance. Amongst the various blend combinations used for the dehydration studies, the membrane constituting 70 wt.% of CS and 30 wt.% HEC yielded a flux of 2.1 kg/m2 · h · 10 µm and a selectivity of 554, which was optimum.  相似文献
