Thermoplastic natural rubber based on polyamide‐12 (PA‐12) blend was prepared by melt blending technique. Influence of blending techniques (i.e., simple blend and dynamic vulcanization) and types of natural rubber (i.e., unmodified natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)) on properties of the blends were investigated. It was found that the simple blends with the proportion of rubber ~ 60 wt % exhibited cocontinuous phase structure while the dynamically cured blends showed dispersed morphology. Furthermore, the blend of ENR exhibited superior mechanical properties, stress relaxation behavior, and fine grain morphology than those of the blend of the unmodified NR. This is attributed to chemical interaction between oxirane groups in ENR molecules and polar functional groups in PA‐12 molecules which caused higher interfacial adhesion. It was also found that the dynamic vulcanization caused enhancement of strength and hardness properties. Temperature scanning stress relaxation measurement revealed improvement of stress relaxation properties and thermal resistance of the dynamically cured ENR/PA‐12 blend. This is attributed to synergistic effects of dynamic vulcanization of ENR and chemical reaction of the ENR and PA‐12 molecules. Furthermore, the dynamically cured ENR/PA‐12 blend exhibited smaller rubber particles dispersed in the PA‐12 matrix. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Rubber toughened poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was prepared by blending with natural rubber (NR)‐based polymers. The blends contained 10 wt % of rubber and melt blended with a twin screw extruder. Enhancement of impact strength of PLA was primarily concernced. This study was focused on the effect of rubber polarity, rubber viscosity and molecular weight on mechanical properties of the blends. Three types of rubbers were used: NR, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR25 and ENR50), and natural rubber grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (NR‐g‐PMMA). Effect of viscosity and molecular weight of NR, rubber mastication with a two‐roll mill was investigated. It was found that all blends showed higher impact strength than PLA and NR became the best toughening agent. Viscosity and molecular weight of NR decreased with increasing number of mastication. Impact strength of PLA/NR blends increased after applying NR mastication due to appropriate particle size. DMTA and DSC characterization were determined as well. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural rubber (NR), epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) composites filled with conductive carbon black and aluminum powder have been prepared by using a two‐roll mill. An electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of those rubber composites was carried out in the frequency range of 8–12GHz (X‐band microwave). The increase of filler loading enhanced shielding effectiveness of the rubber composites. Conductive carbon black was more effective in shielding than aluminum powder. Binary filler‐filled rubber composites showed higher shielding effectiveness than that of single filler‐filled rubber composites. It has been observed that the shielding effectiveness of these rubber composites could be ranked in the following order: ENR ≥ CSM > NR, whereas the mechanical properties of the rubber composites were in the order of CSM > ENR > NR. The correlation between shielding effectiveness and electrical conductivity as well as mechanical properties of the rubber composites are also discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) blends containing 10 and 30 wt % ENR were prepared by using an internal mixer. Five different types of curing systems were employed: dicumyl peroxide (DCP), sulfur (S), phenolic resin (Ph), DCP + S, and DCP + Ph. DCP could crosslink with both EVA and ENR while S and Ph were curing agents for ENR. The DCP system provided the lowest tensile properties and tear strength because of low crosslinking in ENR phase. Addition of sulfur or phenolic resin increased the mechanical properties due to a better vulcanization of the rubber phase. The mechanical properties of the blends decreased with increasing ENR content. The rubber particle size in the blends containing 30% ENR played a more important role in the mechanical properties than the blends containing 10% ENR. ENR particle size did not affect heat shrinkability of EVA and a well vulcanized rubber phase was not required for high heat shrinkage. Furthermore, heat shrinkage of the blends slightly changed as the ENR content increased for all curing systems. With regard to the mechanical properties and heat shrinkability, the most appropriate curing system was DCP + Ph and in the case the 10 wt % ENR content produced a more favorable blend. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural rubber (NR) was blended with chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) with various formulation and blend ratios (NR/CSM: 80/20 –20/80, wt/wt). Rubber blends were prepared by using a two‐roll mill and vulcanized in a compression mold to obtain the 2 mm‐thick sheets. Tensile properties, tear resistance, thermal aging resistance, ozone resistance, and oil resistance were determined according to ASTM. Compatible NR/CSM blends are derived from certain blends containing 20–30% CSM without adding any compatibilizing agent. Tensile and tear strength of NR‐rich blends for certain formulations show positive deviation from the rule of mixture. Thermal aging resistance depends on formulation and blend ratio, while ozone and oil resistance of the blends increase with CSM content. Homogenizing agents used were Stuktol®60NS and Epoxyprene®25. Stuktol®60NS tends to decrease the mechanical properties of the blends and shows no significant effect on blend morphology. Addition of 5–10 phr of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR, Epoxyprene® 25) increases tensile strength, thermal aging resistance, and ozone resistance of the blends. It is found that ENR acts as a compatibilizer of the NR/CSM blends by decreasing both CSM particle size diameter and α transition temperature of CSM. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The interfacial interaction of composites dominates the properties of polymeric/inorganic nanocomposites. Herein, epoxy and hydroxyl groups are introduced into the natural rubber (NR) molecular chains to anchor oxygenous functional groups on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) sheets and therefore enhance the interfacial interaction between GO and rubber. From the morphological observation and interaction analysis, it is found that epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) latex particles are assembled onto the surfaces of GO sheets by employing hydrogen bonding interaction as driving force. This self-assembly depresses restacking and agglomeration of GO sheets and leads to homogenous dispersion of GO within ENR matrix. The formation of hydrogen bonding interface between ENR and GO demonstrates a significant reinforcement for the ENR host. Compared with those of pure ENR, the composite with 0.7 wt% GO loading receives 87% increase in tensile strength and 8.7 fold increase in modulus at 200% elongation after static in-situ vulcanization.  相似文献

Blends of natural rubber (NR) and synthetic rubbers are widely used in the rubber industry to meet specific performance requirements. Further, the emerging field of organomodified clay/rubber nanocomposites could provide a host of novel materials having a unique combination of properties to meet various stringent service conditions. Previous studies have shown that at very low dosages, china clay (kaolin) modified with sodium salt of rubber seed oil (SRSO) improved the cure characteristics and physico‐mechanical properties of NR. Results of the present study show improved cure characteristics and physico‐mechanical properties for blends of NR with butadiene rubber and nitrile rubber containing 4 phr of SRSO‐modified kaolin as indicated by reduction in optimum cure time along with higher tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break for their vulcanizates as compared to those containing unmodified kaolin. The SRSO‐modified kaolin/rubber nanocomposites showed improved flex resistance, reduced heat build‐up, tan delta and loss modulus and higher chemical crosslink density index, indicating a reinforcing effect of the SRSO‐modified kaolin, enabling the nanocomposites to have potential industrial applications. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Attempts to use bagasse ash (BA) as a filler in natural rubber (NR) have been made. Acidolysis/alkaline extraction method was used to purify BA. The purified BA (PBA) was subsequently characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and so forth. After the purification, PBA had a lower particle size and a higher specific surface area. XRD results showed that silica was the main composition of PBA while FTIR results revealed the existence of hydroxyl groups on the PBA surface. The reinforcement magnitude of PBA in NR was subsequently evaluated both without and with the addition of surface modifying agents, namely, bis-3-triethoxysilylpropyl tetrasulfide (TESPT) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). Due to its large particle size, PBA acted as a semi-reinforcing filler for NR, that is, the small increases of hardness, modulus and tensile strength were observed in the presence of PBA. As TESPT and ENR could improve the extent of rubber-filler interaction, mechanical properties of the NR vulcanizates filled with PBA-TESPT and PBA-ENR were slightly higher than those of the PBA-filled NR vulcanizate. For instance, tensile strength exhibited approximately 22% increase after the surface treatment. In this study, both PBA-TESPT and PBA-ENR showed comparable degree of reinforcement.  相似文献

We explore the influence of surface modification of SiO2 on dynamic properties and heat buildup of semi-ef?cient vulcanisates filled by both SiO2 and carbon black. Compared with untreated-SiO2-filled natural rubber (NR), vulcanisates reinforced by modified-SiO2 presents not only better filler dispersity, mechanical properties and dynamic properties, as confirmed by scanning electron microscope and rubber processing analyser, but also lower heat buildup. Fourier infrared spectroscopy and cure characteristics indicates that silane coupling agent molecules grafted on the silica surface provoke an enhanced mobility of rubber chain and adsorb onto filler surface and then decrease the barrier of crosslink reaction. Moreover, composites with Si69-modified-SiO2 show obviously the highest tear strength and lowest heat buildup attributed to that more sulphur released by Si69 also participate the vulcanisation reaction.  相似文献

Thermoplastic elastomers based on the blends of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and natural rubber were prepared by a simple blend technique. The influence of the two different types of natural rubber (i.e., unmodified natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)) on properties of the blends was investigated. The main aim of this study was to improve heat resistance and damping properties, and also to prepare the TPU material with low hardness by blending with various amounts of natural rubber. It was found that the TPU/ENR blends exhibited superior modulus, hardness, shear viscosity, stress relaxation behavior and heat-resistant properties compared to the blends with TPU and unmodified NR. This was attributed to higher chemical interaction between the polar functional groups of ENR and TPU by improving the interfacial adhesion. It was also found that the ENR/TPU blends exhibited finer grain morphology than the blends with unmodified NR. Furthermore, lower tension set, damping factor (Tan ??) and hardness, but higher degradation temperature, were observed in natural rubber/TPU blends compared to pure TPU. This proves the formation of TPU material with high heat resistance, low hardness and better damping properties. However, the blends with higher proportion of natural rubber exhibited lower tensile strength and elongation at break.  相似文献

A novel organomodified montmorillonite prepared by solid‐state method and its nanocomposites with natural rubber were studied. The nanocomposites were prepared by traditional rubber mixing and vulcanizing process. The properties of solid‐state organomodified montmorillonite were investigated by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FITR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion of the layered silicate in rubber matrix was characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the nanocomposites consisting of solid‐state organomodified montmorillonite and natural rubber are obtained. The solid‐state organomodified montmorillonite can not only accelerate the curing process, but also improve the mechanical and aging resistance properties of NR. The properties improvement caused by the fillers are attributed to partial intercalation of the organophilic clay by NR macromolecules. In addition, the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed a decrease of tanδmax and increase of Tg when the organoclay is added to the rubber matrix, which is due to the confinement of the macromolecular segments into the organoclay nanolayers and the strong interaction between the filler and rubber matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon black (HAF) filled powdered natural rubber (P(NR/HAF)) was prepared and the particle size distribution, mechanical properties, and micromorphology of P(NR/HAF) were studied. A carbon black–rubber latex coagulation method was developed for preparing carbon black filled free‐flowing, noncontact staining NR powders with particle diameter less than 0.9 mm. A powdering mechanism model was put forward to describe the powdering process, which shows that the key technical points consist in the surfactant with good emulsification properties and the polymer coating resin with good film forming properties. SEM analysis shows that carbon black and rubber matrix have formed a macroscopic homogenization in the P(NR/HAF) particles without contact staining, and carbon black particles are well dispersed in rubber matrix with diameter of about 50–150 nm. P(NR/HAF) vulcanizate showed better mechanical properties than bale natural rubber/carbon black blends (NR/HAF) and simple NR latex/carbon black blends (NRL/HAF), which depends primarily upon the absence of free carbon black, the fine dispersion of filler on the rubber matrix, and the better interaction between carbon black and rubber matrix due to the proper preparation condition of noncontact staining carbon black filled powdered NR. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The cure characteristics and mechanical properties of blends consisting of hydrogenated natural rubber (HNR) and natural rubber (NR) blends were investigated. The HNR/NR blends at 50/50 wt ratio were vulcanized using various cure systems: peroxide vulcanization, conventional vulcanization with peroxide, and efficient vulcanization with peroxide. The HNR/NR vulcanizates cured by the combination of peroxide and sulfur donor (tetramethylthiuram disulfide, TMTD) in the efficient vulcanization with peroxide exhibited the best mechanical properties. It was also found that the hydrogenation level of HNR did not affect the tensile strength of the vulcanizates. The tensile strength of the blends decreased with increasing HNR content because of the higher incompatibility to cause the noncoherency behavior between NR and HNR. However, the HNR/NR vulcanizate at 50/50 wt ratio showed the maximum ultimate elongation corresponding to a co‐continuous morphology as attested to by scanning electron micrographs. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized by homogeneous precipitation and calcination method and were then characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction analysis. Synthesized ZnO was found to have no impurity and had a dimension ranging from 30–70 nm with an average of 50 nm. The effect of these ZnO nanoparticles as cure activator was studied for the first time in natural rubber (NR) and nitrile rubber (NBR) and compared with conventional rubber grade ZnO with special reference to mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. From the rheograph, the maximum torque value was found to increase for both NR and NBR compounds containing ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO nanoparticles were found to be more uniformly dispersed in the rubber matrix in comparison with the conventional rubber grade ZnO as evident from scanning electron microscopy/X‐ray dot mapping analysis. The tensile strength was observed to improve by 80% for NR when ZnO nanoparticles were used as cure activator instead of conventional rubber grade ZnO. An improvement of 70% was observed in the case of NBR. The glass transition temperature (Tg) showed a positive shift by 6°C for both NR and NBR nanocomposites, which indicated an increase in crosslinking density. The swelling ratio was found to decrease in the case of both NR and NBR, and volume fraction of rubber in swollen gel was observed to increase, which supported the improvement in mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites based on carbon black (CB) and two poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐modified clay hybrid filler were fabricated. The morphology and mechanical properties were studied. The dynamic properties of NR vulcanizates were investigated over a range of strain amplitude at two temperatures. It was found that NR with hybrid filler exhibits superior mechanical properties over that with CB as single phase filler. The hybrid filler causes a significant alteration in the dynamic properties of rubber. The Payne effect becomes more pronounced in rubber with modified clay. A decrease in loss factor (tanδ) was observed for rubber with hybrid filler also. The results revealed that the inclusion of nanoclay (NC) could induce a stronger and more developed filler network. Because of the anisotropy of the nanolayers, NC would depress the reconstruction of filler network, or lower the reformation rates when broken down under deformation, giving rise to lower tanδ value at broad temperature range as well as strain amplitude. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The distribution of modified and unmodified nanoclays inside the rubber phases of immiscible rubber–rubber blends composed of nonpolar–polar natural rubber (NR)/epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and nonpolar–nonpolar NR/polybutadiene rubber (BR) was investigated for the first time. The distribution of clays at various loadings in the blends was calculated from the viscoelastic properties of the blends. For example, in the 50 : 50 NR/ENR blend, 42% Cloisite 30B migrated to the NR phase, and 58% went to the ENR phase. However, in the same blend, only 7% Cloisite Na+ was found in the NR phase, and 93% was found in the ENR phase. Again, in the 50 : 50 NR/BR blends, the NR phase contained 85% Cloisite 30B, whereas 55% Cloisite Na+ migrated to the NR phase. All these observations were explained with the help of viscosity, X‐ray diffraction, and morphology analyses. The effect of the distribution of the clay on the mechanical properties was also discussed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Coal shale is considered a waste material in coal mining and washing processes. It comprises both inorganic and organic components. In this study, two kinds of coal shale were microcracked, burned, modified by enoxidation natural rubber (ENR), and then used as reinforcing fillers for natural rubber (NR). The NR vulcanizates reinforced with this modified filler were characterized by bounded rubber content, apparent crosslink density, and various mechanical property tests. The results show that the ultramicro coal‐shale powder was a good filler for NR. It could be mixed quickly, and it dispersed well in NR, which resulted in a significant enhancement. After modification by ENR, the reinforcement properties were improved further. The results suggest that this new type of filler could be used as a semireinforcing filler to replace or partially replace carbon black. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
