Preparation of defect‐free and optimized thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes is an effective way to enhance the process of organic solvent nanofiltration. However, it still remains a great challenge due to poor filler particle dispersibility in organic phase and compatible issue between fillers and polymers. Aiming at these difficulties, UiO‐66‐NH2 nanoparticles were surface modified with long alkyl chains and used in the preparation of TFN membranes. As a result, defect‐free TFN membranes with ultrathin MOF@polyamide layer were successfully prepared benefited from the improved particle dispersibility in n‐hexane. Significant enhancement was found in methanol permeance after nanoparticle incorporation, without comprising the tetracycline rejection evidently. Especially, the novel TFN membrane prepared with organic phase solution containing 0.15% (w/v) modified UiO‐66‐NH2 nanoparticles showed a superior methanol permeance of 20 L·m?2·h?1·bar?1 and a tetracycline rejection of about 99%, which is appealing to the application in pharmaceutical industry for example. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 1303–1312, 2017  相似文献

A sol–gel method was applied for the preparation of silica membranes with different average pore sizes. Ammonia (NH3) permeation/separation characteristics of the silica membranes were examined in a wide temperature range (50–400°C) by measurement of both single and binary component separation. The order of gas permeance through the silica membranes, which was independent of membrane average pore size, was as follows: He > H2 > NH3 > N2. These results suggest that, for permeation through silica membranes, the molecular size of NH3 is larger than that of H2, despite previous reports that the kinetic diameter of NH3 is smaller than that of H2. At high temperatures, there was no effect of NH3 adsorption on H2 permeation characteristics, and silica membranes were highly stable in NH3 at 400°C (i.e., gas permeance remained unchanged). On the other hand, at 50°C NH3 molecules adsorbed on the silica improved NH3‐permselectivity by blocking permeation of H2 molecules without decreasing NH3 permeance. The maximal NH3/H2 permeance ratio obtained during binary component separation was ~30 with an NH3 permeance of ~10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 at an H2 permeation activation energy of ~6 kJ mol?1. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献

In this study, we report an easy and novel way to develop high flux aliphatic–aromatic-based thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide osmosis membranes by addition of inorganic metal salts with amine reactants in the reaction system of polyethylene imine (PEI) and 1,3-benzene dicarbonyl chloride. Inorganic metal salts like CuSO4, NiSO4, MgSO4, and Al2(SO4)3 added to block some of the amine groups of PEI through complexation which in turn changes the polycondensation reaction kinetics of amine acid chloride reaction. The prepared membranes were characterized using water contact angle and atomic force microscopy studies and the performances were evaluated both in reverse osmosis and forward osmosis mode. In presence of metal salts in reaction interface, the performance of TFC membranes was greatly enhanced and the optimum metal salt concentration was identified for individual metal salts for maximum performance enhancement. The effects of different anions for same metal ion and different molecular weight of PEI were evaluated on composite polyamide membrane performances. Water permeability (flux) of 63.48 L m?2 h?1 was achieved upon inorganic salt addition compared to the unmodified TFC membranes with flux of 42.1 L m?2 h?1 at similar salt rejection of ~95%. Based on the new findings, a conceptual model was proposed to explain the role of metal ion in amine solution on the resulting characteristics of aromatic–aliphatic type polyamide–polysulfone composite membrane.  相似文献

Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were fabricated by interfacial polymerization of a polyamide (PA) layer on the shell side of hollow fiber membrane supports. TiO2 nanoparticle loadings in the thin-film layer were 0.01, 0.05, and 0.20 wt %. Nanoparticle-free PA thin-film composite (TFC) membranes served as the comparative basis. The TFN membranes were characterized in terms of the chemical composition, structure, and surface properties of the separation layer. Incorporating nanoTiO2 improved membrane permeability up to 12.6-fold. During preliminary laboratory-scale evaluation, TFN membranes showed lower salt rejection but higher TOC rejection in comparisons with the corresponding values for TFC controls. Based on the performance in lab-scale tests, TFN membranes with 0.01 wt % nanoTiO2 loading were selected for an evaluation at the pilot scale with synthetic surface water as the feed. While the permeate flux during long-term pilot-scale operation gradually decreased for TFC membranes, TFN membranes had a higher initial permeate flux that gradually increased with time. The TOC rejection by TFN and TFC membranes was comparable. We conclude that TFN membranes show promise for full-scale surface water treatment applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. In this study, a fabricated hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol‐co‐ethylene) (PVA‐co‐PE) nanofiber membrane was used as the middle support layer to prepare thin film composite (TFC) membranes for nanofiltration. The effects of the supporting nonwoven layer, grams per square meter (GSM) of nanofiber, reaction time, heat treatment, monomer concentration, operating pressure, and pH value on the separation performance of the TFC membranes were analyzed. These results show that the TFC membranes prepared with the PVA‐co‐PE nanofiber membrane can be used to filtrate different metal ions. For NaCl, Na2SO4, CaCl2, CuCl2, CuSO4, and methyl orange solutions, the rejection rates of the TFC membrane with nonwoven polyester as the supporting layer and a nanofiber GSM of 12.8 g/m2 are 87.9%, 93.4%, 92.0%, 93.1%, 95.8%, and 100%, respectively. This indicates the potential application of the PVA‐co‐PE nanofiber membrane in the preparation of nanofiltration and reverse‐osmosis TFC membranes. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Catalytic decomposition of NH3 with H2‐selective microporous silica membranes for COx‐free hydrogen production was studied theoretically and experimentally. The simulation study shows that NH3 conversion, H2 yield and H2 purity increase with the Damköhler number (Da), and their improvement is affected by the effect of H2 extraction as well as NH3 and N2 permeation through the membranes. The experimental study of NH3 decomposition was carried out in a bimodal catalytic membrane reactor (BCMR), consisting of a bimodal catalytic support and a H2‐selective silica layer. Catalytic membranes showed H2 permeances of 6.2–9.8 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1, with H2/NH3 and H2/N2 permeance ratios of 110–200 and 200–700, respectively, at 773 K. The effect of operating conditions on membrane reactor performance with respect to NH3 conversion, H2 yield and H2 purity was investigated, and the results were in agreement with those calculated by the proposed simulation model. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 168–179, 2013  相似文献

Organic/inorganic hybrid silica membranes were prepared from 1,1,3,3‐tetraethoxy‐1,3‐dimethyl disiloxane (TEDMDS) by the sol‐gel technique with firing at 300–550°C in N2. TEDMDS‐derived silica membranes showed high H2 permeance (0.3–1.1 × 10?6 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1) with low H2/N2 (~10) and high H2/SF6 (~1200) perm‐selectivity, confirming successful tuning of micropore sizes larger than TEOS‐derived silica membranes. TEDMDS‐derived silica membranes prepared at 550°C in N2 increased gas permeances as well as pore sizes after air exposure at 450°C. TEDMDS had an advantage in tuning pore size by the “template” and “spacer” techniques, due to the pyrolysis of methyl groups in air and Si? O? Si bonding, respectively. For pore size evaluation of microporous membranes, normalized Knudsen‐based permeance, which was proposed based on the gas translation model and verified with permeance of zeolite membranes, reveals that pore sizes of TEDMDS membranes were successfully tuned in the range of 0.6–1.0 nm. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2011  相似文献

The sol‐gel method was applied in the fabrication of homogenous polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (HOMO‐POSS)‐derived silica membranes. Single gas permeation characteristics in a temperature range of 100–500°C were examined to discuss the effect of silica precursor on amorphous silica networks. HOMO‐POSS‐derived membranes showed a CO2 permeance of 1.1 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 with a CO2/CH4 permeance ratio of 131 at 100°C, which is a superior CO2/CH4 separation performance by comparison with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)‐derived silica membranes. Normalized Knudsen‐based permeance (NKP) was applied for quantitative evaluation of pore size. HOMO‐POSS‐derived membranes had loose amorphous silica structures compared to TEOS‐derived membranes and pore size was successfully tuned by changing the calcination temperatures. The activation energy for a HOMO‐POSS‐derived membrane fired at 550°C with a uniform pore size of ~ 0.42 nm increased linearly with the ratio of the kinetic diameter of the gas molecule to the pore diameter, λ (=dk/dp), and showed a trend similar to that of DDR‐type zeolite membranes. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 1733–1743, 2012  相似文献

A hydrophilic compound, taurine, was investigated as an additive in the interfacial polymerization between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to prepare thin‐film composite (TFC) membranes. The resulting membranes were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The morphology and hydrophilicity of the membranes were investigated through scanning electronic microscopy and water contact angle measurements. The separation performance of the TFC membranes was investigated through water flux and salt rejection tests. The protein‐fouling resistance of the films was evaluated by water recovery rate measurements after the treatment of bovine serum albumin. The membrane containing 0.2 wt % taurine showed the best performance of 92% MgSO4 rejection at a flux of 31 L m?2 h?1 and better antifouling properties than the PIP–TMC membranes. An appropriately low concentration of taurine showed the same MgSO4 rejection as the PIP–TMC membranes but a better fouling resistance performance. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The development of high flux and solvent‐stable thin‐film composite (TFC) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes was reported. A novel cross‐linked polyimide substrate, consisting of a thin skin layer with minimum solvent transport resistance and a sponge‐like sublayer structure that could withstand membrane compaction under high‐pressure was first fabricated. Then the solvent flux was significantly enhanced without compromising the solute rejection by the coupling effects of (1) the addition of triethylamine/camphorsulfonic acid into the monomer solution, and (2) the combined post‐treatments of glycerol/sodium dodecyl sulphate immersion and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) filtration. Finally, the long‐term stability of the TFC membrane in aprotic solvents such as DMSO was improved by post‐crosslink thermal annealing. The novel TFC OSN membrane developed was found to have superior rejection to tetracycline (MW: 444 g/mol) but was very permeable to alcohols such as methanol (5.12 lm?2h?1bar?1) and aprotic solvents such as dimethylformamide (3.92 lm?2h?1bar?1) and DMSO (3.34 lm?2h?1bar?1). © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 60: 3623–3633, 2014  相似文献

Outer‐selective thin‐film composite (TFC) hollow fiber membranes offer advantages like less fiber blockage in the feed stream and high packing density for industrial applications. However, outer‐selective TFC hollow fiber membranes are rarely commercially available due to the lack of effective ways to remove residual reactants from fiber's outer surface during interfacial polymerization and form a defect‐free polyamide film. A new simplified method to fabricate outer‐selective TFC membranes on tribore hollow fiber substrates is reported. Mechanically robust tribore hollow fiber substrates containing three circular‐sector channels were first prepared by spinning a P84/ethylene glycol mixed dope solution with delayed demixing at the fiber lumen. The thin wall tribore hollow fibers have a large pure water permeability up to 300 L m?2 h?1 bar?1. Outer‐selective TFC tribore hollow fiber membranes were then fabricated by interfacial polymerization with the aid of vacuum sucking to ensure the TFC layer well‐attached to the substrate. Under forward osmosis studies, the TFC tribore hollow fiber membrane exhibits a good water flux and a small flux difference between active‐to‐draw (i.e., the active layer facing the draw solution) and active‐to‐feed (i.e., the active layer facing the feed solution) modes due to the small internal concentration polarization. A hyperbranched polyglycerol was further grafted on top of the newly developed TFC tribore hollow fiber membranes for oily wastewater treatment. The membrane displays low fouling propensity and can fully recover its water flux after a simple 20‐min water wash at 0.5 bar from its lumen side, which makes the membrane preferentially suitable for oil‐water separation. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 4491–4501, 2015  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Ceramic membranes have received more attention than polymeric membranes for the separation and purification of bio‐products owing to their superior chemical, mechanical and thermal properties. Commercially available ceramic membranes are too expensive. This could be overcome by fabricating membranes using low‐cost raw materials. The aim of this work is to fabricate a low‐cost γ‐Al2O3–clay composite membrane and evaluate its potential for the separation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a function of pH, feed concentration and applied pressure. To achieve this, the membrane support is prepared using low‐cost clay mixtures instead of very expensive alumina, zirconia and titania materials. The cost of the membrane can be further reduced by preparing a γ‐alumina surface layer on the clay support using boehmite sol synthesized from inexpensive aluminium chloride instead of expensive aluminium alkoxide using a dip‐coating technique. RESULTS: The pore size distribution of the γ‐Al2O3‐clay composite membrane varied from 5.4–13.6 nm. The membrane was prepared using stable boehmite sol of narrow particle size distribution and mean particle size 30.9 nm. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the surface of the γ‐Al2O3–clay composite membrane is defect‐free. The pure water permeability of the support and the composite membrane were found to be 4.838 × 10?6 and 2.357 × 10?7 m3 m?2 s?1 kPa?1, respectively. The maximum rejection of BSA protein was found to be 95%. It was observed that the separation performance of the membrane in terms of flux and rejection strongly depends on the electrostatic interaction between the protein and charged membrane. CONCLUSION: The successively prepared γ‐Al2O3‐clay composite membrane proved to possess good potential for the separation of BSA with high yield and could be employed as a low cost alternate to expensive ceramic membranes. A vinyl amine–vinyl alcohol copolymer (VAm–VOH) was synthesized through free‐radical polymerization, basic hydrolysis in methanol, acidic hydrolysis in water, and an anion‐exchange process. In the copolymer, the primary amino groups on the VAm segment acted as the carrier for CO2‐facilitated transport, and the vinyl alcohol segment was used to reduce the crystallinity and increase the gas permeance. VAm–VOH/polysulfone (PS) composite membranes for CO2 separation were prepared with the VAm–VOH copolymer as a selective layer and PS ultrafiltration membrane as a support. The membrane gas permselectivity was investigated with CO2, N2, and CH4 pure gases and their binary mixtures. The results show that the CO2 transport obeyed the facilitated transport mechanism, whereas N2 and CH4 followed the solution–diffusion mechanism. The increase in the VAm fraction in the copolymer resulted in a carrier content increase, a crystallinity increase, and intermolecular hydrogen‐bond formation. Because of these factors, the CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity had maxima with the VAm fraction. At an optimum applied pressure of 0.14 MPa and at an optimum VAm fraction of 54.8%, the highest CO2 permeance of 189.4 GPU [1 GPU = 1 × 10?6 cm3(STP) cm?2 s?1 cmHg?1] and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 58.9 were obtained for the CO2/N2 mixture. The heat treatment was used to improve the CO2/N2 selectivity. At an applied pressure of 0.8–0.92 MPa, the membrane heat‐treated under 100°C possessed a CO2 permeance of 82 GPU and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 60.4, whereas the non‐heat‐treated membrane exhibited a CO2 permeance of 111 GPU and a CO2/N2 selectivity of 45. After heat treatment, the CO2/N2 selectivity increased obviously, whereas the CO2 permeance decreased. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2014 , 131, 40043.  相似文献

Gas separation by metal‐organic framework (MOF) membranes is an emerging research field. Their commercial application potential is, however, still rarely explored due in part to unsatisfied separation characteristics and difficulty in finding suitable applications. Herein, we report “sharp molecular sieving” properties of high quality isoreticular MOF‐1 (IRMOF‐1) membrane for CO2 separation from dry, CO2 enriched CO2/CH4, and CO2/N2 mixtures. The IRMOF‐1 membranes exhibit CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 separation factors of 328 and 410 with CO2 permeance of 2.55 × 10?7 and 2.06 × 10?7 mol m?2 s?1 Pa?1 at feed pressure of 505 kPa and 298 K, respectively. High grade CO2 is efficiently produced from the industrial or lower grade CO2 feed gas by this MOF membrane separation process. The demonstrated “sharp molecular sieving” properties of the MOF membranes and their potential application in production of value‐added high purity CO2 should bring new research and development interest in this field. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 3836–3841, 2016  相似文献

The sol–gel method was applied to the fabrication of amorphous silica membranes for use in hydrogen separation at high temperatures. The effects of fabrication temperature on the hydrogen permeation properties and the hydrothermal stability of amorphous silica membranes were evaluated. A thin continuous silica separation layer (thickness = <300 nm) was successfully formed on the top of a deposited colloidal silica layer in a porous glass support. After heat treatment at 800°C for an amorphous silica membrane fabricated at 550°C, however, it was quite difficult to distinguish the active separation layer from the deposited colloidal silica layer in a porous glass support, due to the adhesion of colloidal silica caused by sintering at high temperatures. The amorphous silica membranes fabricated at 700°C were relatively stable under steam atmosphere (500°C, steam = 70 kPa), and showed steady He and H2 permeance values of 4.0 × 10?7 and 1.0 × 10?7 mol·m?2·s?1·Pa?1 with H2/CH4 and H2/H2O permeance ratios of ~110 and 22, respectively. The permeance ratios of H2/H2O for membranes fired at 700°C increased drastically over the range of He/H2 permeance ratios by factors of ~3–4, and showed a value of ~30, which was higher than those fired at 500°C. Less permeation of water vapor through amorphous silica membranes fabricated at high temperatures can be ascribed to the dense amorphous silica structure caused by the condensation reaction of silanol groups.  相似文献

Metallic ion-cross-linked polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) thin-film composite (TFC) membranes supported on an ultraviolet (UV)-cross-linked porous substrate were fabricated. The UV-cross-linked porous substrate was prepared via polymerization-induced phase separation. The PIM-1 TFC membranes were fabricated via a dip-coating procedure. Metallic ion-cross-linked PIM-1 TFC membranes were fabricated by hydrolyzing the PIM-1 TFC membrane in an alkali solution and then cross-linking it in a multivalent metallic ion solution. The pore size and porous structures were evaluated by low-temperature N2 adsorption–desorption analysis. The membrane structure was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The effects of heat treatment and pore-forming additives on the gas permeance of the UV-cross-linked porous substrate are reported. The effects of different pre-coating treatments on the gas permeance of the metallic ion-cross-linked PIM-1 TFC membrane are also discussed. The metallic ion-cross-linked PIM-1 TFC membrane displayed high CO2/N2 selectivity (23) and good CO2 permeance (1058 GPU).  相似文献

A facilitated transport polyamide (PA) membrane was developed for gas separation by interfacial polymerization reaction of piperazine (PIP) and isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) supported on polysulfone (PSF) membrane previously prepared by dry/wet phase inversion method. The properties of the prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and XRD. SEM images showed that a defect-free PSF, and rough PA membranes were fabricated, while the FT-IR spectra confirmed the formation of PA layer on top of the PSF support. The separation performance of the thin film PA and PSF membranes was evaluated using four gasses (CO2, CH4, N2, and O2). Compared to the PSF membrane, the PA membrane demonstrated an increased selectivity of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 by 178%, 169%, respectively. This improvement was attributed to the presence of amine functional groups, which acted as a fixed carrier to facilitate the transport of CO2 gas across the membrane. However, building the PA layer on top of PSF support reduced the membrane permeance of CO2 from 2.41 to 2.12 GPU as a result of the increased mass transfer resistance. Furthermore, the effect of operating temperature and pressure on the separation performance of the membranes was investigated.  相似文献

Inkjet printing was applied to manufacture silica‐based gas separation membranes, which were coated on a pore‐graduated alumina substrate with a mesoporous γ‐alumina interlayer. A silica sol diluted by 1‐propanol was used to print the membrane layer followed by thermal treatment in a rapid thermal processing furnace. The membrane thickness was varied between 30 and 110 nm by conducting one, two, and three coating steps. In the latter case, H2 permeance in the range of 2.0 × 10?8–3.3 × 10?8 mol/s·m2·Pa combined with H2/CO2 selectivities in the range of 15–25 were achieved, proving the concept that inorganic gas separation membranes can be successfully processed by inkjet printing.  相似文献

A novel polyzwitterionic hydrogel coated mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was successfully prepared, characterized and used for Cu2+, Mn2+, and Pb2+ heavy metal ions removal from water. Hydrophilic and porous covalent organic framework (COF) nanoparticles (NP) as filler were synthesized from melamine and terephthalaldehyde, and then incorporated into polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) membrane. The hydrogel coating was applied by using a tailored cross-linkable polymer system in combination with concentration polarization enabled cross-linking. The effects of COF NP loading into PA layer and polyzwitterionic hydrogel coating on the membrane morphology and separation performance were studied using different analyses. The MMM prepared with a COF NP loading of 0.02 wt/wt% in the hexane dispersion used for NP deposition during PA layer formation (leading to 0.42 g/m2) exhibited an increased pure water permeability of around 200% compared with the neat PA TFC membrane while the Mn2+ ion rejection maintained above 98%. Scanning electron microscopy surface images and zeta potential profiles showed that the hydrogel was successfully deposited on the membrane surface. Furthermore, the hydrogel coating could decrease net surface charge of membranes but did not significantly influence the heavy metal ions rejections under nanofiltration conditions. The results of filtration experiment with protein solution indicated that the hydrogel coated membranes exhibited superior antifouling property, as shown by higher flux recovery ratio after washing with water, compared with neat PA TFC membrane and not coated MMM, respectively.  相似文献

Optimizing synthesis factors of polyamide top layers is an important requirement in the design of thin film composite (TFC) membranes. In this research, the top layer fabrication method (conventional, heat curing, and spin coating), type of acid acceptor (sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, and triethylamine), type of organic phase solvent (hexane, heptane, and mixed hexane/heptane), and concentration of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (0, 0.5, and 1 wt %) are selected as the control parameters of this synthesis and optimized using the Taguchi approach. The analysis of variance shows that the layer fabrication method is the most influential parameter on water flux and salt (NaCl) rejection of TFCs. Furthermore, although the type of organic solvent has not a significant contribution to the water flux, it is another significant factor affecting the rejection. The optimized membrane is then used to construct structure–property relationships and to understand the influence of each individual factor on the desalination performance. Accordingly, a TFC membrane with the top layer fabricated by the heat curing method, in the presence of Na2CO3 as the acid acceptor, hexane as the organic phase solvent and 0.5 wt % of the surfactant is prepared that shows water permeance of 2.73 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and NaCl rejection of 98.1%. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
