The Human Health Effect Programme in Greenland, a review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The burden of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Arctic peoples has been monitored for some years. In 1997, the Alta Declaration extended the mandate of the Arctic Assessment and Monitoring Programme (AMAP) to cover assessment of the combined effects of environmental stressors. The AMAP Phase I assessment report (Assessment report: Arctic pollution issues. Arctic monitoring and assessment programme (AMAP), Oslo Norway, xii+859 pp. Vol xii + 859 pp. Oslo, Norway, 1998) gave an overview of the classical toxicology of contaminants. Only recently a programme for measuring the potential biological effects of these contaminants has been established: The AMAP Human Health Effect Monitoring Programme. Body burden data alone are not enough to assess the health risks associated with exposure to environmental contaminants in Arctic peoples. Furthermore, laboratory studies of the effects of single chemicals or chemical mixtures in laboratory animals and cell cultures cannot fully elucidate the human health risks. Integration of epidemiological health research and effect-biomarker studies on humans from exposed populations in the Arctic is needed in order to obtain information about the real health risks resulting from exposure to the accumulated mixtures of contaminants in the Arctic. The present text aims to give a short account of background literature on known and suspected effects of environmental chemicals on endocrine regulated processes with special emphasis on Arctic conditions. Following the evaluation of existing knowledge, a survey of the recently started Human Health Effect Biomarker Programme in Greenland is given.  相似文献

For around two decades, artificial snow has been used by numerous winter sports resorts to ensure good snow cover at low altitude areas or more generally, to lengthen the skiing season. Biological additives derived from certain bacteria are regularly used to make artificial snow. However, the use of these additives has raised doubts concerning the potential impact on human health and the environment. In this context, the French health authorities have requested the French Agency for Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Afsset) to assess the health risks resulting from the use of such additives. The health risk assessment was based on a review of the scientific literature, supplemented by professional consultations and expertise. Biological or chemical hazards from additives derived from the ice nucleation active bacterium Pseudomonas syringae were characterised. Potential health hazards to humans were considered in terms of infectious, toxic and allergenic capacities with respect to human populations liable to be exposed and the means of possible exposure. Taking into account these data, a qualitative risk assessment was carried out, according to four exposure scenarios, involving the different populations exposed, and the conditions and routes of exposure. It was concluded that certain health risks can exist for specific categories of professional workers (mainly snowmakers during additive mixing and dilution tank cleaning steps, with risks estimated to be negligible to low if workers comply with safety precautions). P. syringae does not present any pathogenic capacity to humans and that the level of its endotoxins found in artificial snow do not represent a danger beyond that of exposure to P. syringae endotoxins naturally present in snow. However, the risk of possible allergy in some particularly sensitive individuals cannot be excluded. Another important conclusion of this study concerns use of poor microbiological water quality to make artificial snow.  相似文献

The assessment of health risks to the population from radionuclides in the environment is a complex and as yet incomplete science: biogeochemical mechanisms of environmental transfer and concentration are poorly understood; models of radionuclide metabolism rely largely on inconclusive and contradictory experiments with animals, and the principles by which results may be extrapolated to humans are unknown; uncertainties in the dosimetry of alpha-emitters in children and the foetus are acute; and chronic doubt persists over the magnitude of low-level dose-response for radiation carcinogenesis. To deny uncertainties of this nature is to court public distrust of scientific risk assessment; public confidence in nuclear power technologies might be strengthened through a more open discussion of the technical difficulties involved. These problems are described with reference to the assessment of cancer risks at a large nuclear facility in the north of England. The extent of uncertainties in a recent radiological risk assessment are found to be such that, should scientific concern persist over the exceptional incidence of child cancer in the locality, greater consideration should be given to a reappraisal of the risk calculation.  相似文献

Biological contamination is still the most significant public health risk from drinking water even in industrialized countries. High potential for organic chemical transport to drinking water continues to exist even with source protection because of the multitude of chemical types and quantities. Drinking water is usually not a unique source nor the most significant contributor to total exposure from synthetic organic chemicals but it might be one of the most controllable. The major public concern with drinking water contamination has been possible contribution to cancer risks from organic micropollutants. Even though the actual risks are probably small in most cases it is clearly within the public interest to prevent adulteration of water supplies and to protect their quality for the future so that these concerns or risks can be avoided.A risk assessment/management decision model is suggested which may assist the process of making rational assessments of these contamination problems and control decisions that consciously consider all of the available data in a consistent manner.  相似文献

European governmental institutions, as well as local communities, have recently become aware of the threats arising from soil pollution for the welfare of the population. Humans contact with soils is more likely in urban than in rural areas, and is strongly dependent on land use. Spatial planning and land management may have important impacts on the potential transfer of pollutants from contaminated soils to humans. In the present study, we propose a land use-based method for the evaluation of human health risks arising from heavy metal-contaminated urban soils, addressing in particular the influence of planning measures and land use changes on such risks. The method accounts for the role of the bioavailability of soil metals as a key factor in health risk assessment. In order to increase method applicability, a step-by-step procedure and a calculation tool were elaborated. The method can be used to identify areas in which the current or planned land use is associated with unacceptable health risks and to optimise the allocation of a certain land use to areas that are well suited and where the risks are minimal. A risk index is calculated for the area, taking the land use into consideration, as the sum of the risks from different exposure pathways and different heavy metals. For those areas where risk is identified as unacceptable, alternative planning or management options should be defined to achieve a maximal risk reduction in a cost-effective way. The method is illustrated using the Italian municipality, Grugliasco.  相似文献

A carcinogenic risk assessment for acrylonitrile in consumer products was prepared as part of the Second Workshop on Pragmatics of Risk Assessment, Bethesda, MD. Data from one inhalation and two oral rat bioassays served as input into several high-to-low-dose mathematical risk extrapolation models. The final unit risk estimates for humans were based on maximum likelihood estimates from the Global83 implementation of the multistage model after adjustments for surface area differences, continuous versus intermittent exposures, and the proportion of lifetime exposed. The unit risk estimates for lifetime exposure to 1 mg kg-1 day-1 by inhalation and ingestion were 0.0531 and 0.2385, respectively. These risks are equivalent to risks of 3.3 x 10(-8) for inhalation of 1 ppt in air and 3.4 x 10(-9) for ingestion of 1 ng day.-1  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) risks from stormwater runoff to an aquatic ecosystem were studied. Monitoring data on waterborne, porewater, and sediment Zn concentrations collected at 20 stations throughout a stormwater collection/detention facility consisting of forested wetlands, a retention pond and first order stream were used to conduct the assessment. Bioavailability in the water column was estimated using biotic ligand models for invertebrates and fish while bioavailability in the sediment was assessed using acid volatile sulfide-simultaneously extracted metal (AVS-SEM). The screening level assessment indicated no significant risks were posed to benthic organisms from Zn concentrations in sediments and pore water. As would be expected for stormwater, Zn concentrations were temporally quite variable within a storm event, varying by factors of 2 to 4. Overall, probabilistic assessment indicated low (5-10% of species affected) to negligible risks in the system, especially at the discharge to the first order stream. Moderate to high risks (10-50% of species affected) were identified at sampling locations most upgradient in the collection system. The largest uncertainty with the assessment is associated with how best to estimate chronic exposure/risks from time-varying exposure concentrations. Further research on pulse exposure metal toxicity is clearly needed to assess stormwater impacts on the environment.  相似文献

A risk assessment framework was used to assess the risks of forest fire smoke (ffs) to the exposed communities, critical infrastructures and the environment. The present work is focused on the planning and problem formulation phases of this risk assessment procedure. Specifically, as part of the problem formulation phase, integration of the available ffs chemical data was carried out by answering critical questions regarding the ffs. In this way, critical factors have been identified, which mostly define and characterize ffs as a cause of problems and possible symptoms. The integrated information can be used in order to determine assessment endpoints, conceptual models, and risk hypotheses, as presented in an indicative example referred to a simple risk scenario. This work, enhanced with additional risk scenarios, can be used for the next phases of the risk assessment procedure, such as risk analysis and risk characterization. Future research needs for adequate evaluation of ffs impacts on communities, infrastructures, and the environment are also discussed.  相似文献

This special issue covers the main results of the European Sixth Framework Integrated Research project NoMiracle (Novel Methods for Risk Assessment of Cumulative stressors in Europe). New tools to analyse, characterise and quantify the combined risks to health or the environment from multiple stressors are presented or reviewed. Examples of cumulative stressors are mixtures of chemicals alone or in combination with biological or physical environmental factors such as pathogens and climate extremes. Among the main findings, the scientific work points at the importance of time in dealing with toxicity, and in particular the toxicity of chemical mixtures, the natures of the uncertainties associated with risk assessment and the value of visualisation in identifying and quantifying the most relevant risks. A major conclusion of the project is that researchers and regulators should focus on the receptor rather than on the single stressor or combination of agents. There is also a need for more efforts on mechanistic understanding and for a mechanism-based framework for interpreting mixture/multiple stressor effects. The new tools are available on the internet (http://nomiracle.jrc.ec.europa.eu).  相似文献

Faecal contamination of greywater and associated microbial risks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The faecal contamination of greywater in a local treatment system at Viby?sen, north of Stockholm, Sweden was quantified using faecal indicator bacteria and chemical biomarkers. Bacterial indicator densities overestimated the faecal load by 100-1000-fold when compared to chemical biomarkers. Based on measured levels of coprostanol, the faecal load was estimated to be 0.04 g person(-1) day(-1). Prevalence of pathogens in the population and the faecal load were used to form the basis of a screening-level quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) that was undertaken for rotavirus, Salmonella typhimurium, Campylobacter jejuni, Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum. The different exposure scenarios simulated--direct contact, irrigation of sport fields and groundwater recharge--gave unacceptably high rotavirus risks (0.04 < Pinf < 0.60) despite a low faecal load. The poor reduction of somatic coliphages, which were used as a virus model, in the treatment was one main reason and additional treatment of the greywater is suggested. Somatic coliphages can under extreme circumstances replicate in the wastewater treatment system and thereby underestimate the virus reduction. An alternative QMRA method based on faecal enterococci densities estimated similar risks as for rotavirus. Growth conditions for Salmonella in greywater sediments were also investigated and risk modelling based on replication in the system increased the probability of infection from Salmonella 1000-fold, but it was still lower than the risk of a rotavirus infection.  相似文献

A fuzzy approach to construction project risk assessment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The increasing complexity and dynamism of construction projects have imposed substantial uncertainties and subjectivities in the risk analysis process. Most of the real-world risk analysis problems contain a mixture of quantitative and qualitative data; therefore quantitative risk assessment techniques are inadequate for prioritizing risks. This article presents a risk assessment methodology based on the Fuzzy Sets Theory, which is an effective tool to deal with subjective judgement, and on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which is used to structure a large number of risks. The proposed methodology incorporates knowledge and experience acquired from many experts, since they carry out the risks identification and their structuring, and also the subjective judgements of the parameters which are considered to assess the overall risk factor: risk impact, risk probability and risk discrimination. All of these factors are expressed by qualitative scales which are defined by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers to capture the vagueness in the linguistic variables. The most notable differences with other fuzzy risk assessment methods are the use of an algorithm to handle the inconsistencies in the fuzzy preference relation when pair-wise comparison judgements are necessary, and the use of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers until the defuzzification step. An illustrative example on risk assessment of a rehabilitation project of a building is used to demonstrate the proposed methodology.  相似文献

This paper describes the development of a pollutant risk prioritisation methodology for the comparative assessment of stormwater pollutants discharged from differing land use types and activities. Guidelines are presented which evaluate available data with respect to ‘likelihood of occurrence’ and ‘severity of impact’. The use of the developed approach is demonstrated through its application to total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, lead and cadmium. The proposed benchmarking scheme represents a transparent and auditable mechanism to support the synthesis of data from a variety of sources and is sufficiently flexible to incorporate the use of chemical, physical and/or ecological data sets. Practitioners involved in developing and implementing pollutant mitigation programmes are assisted in two key ways. Firstly through enabling the risks to receiving waters from diffuse pollution on a source-by-source and/or pollutant-by-pollutant basis at a catchment scale to be comparatively assessed and prioritised. Secondly, the methodology informs the selection of appropriate diffuse pollution control strategies.  相似文献

Cooking activity is accompanied with several risks, mainly for elderly people due to attention and memory impairment. Literature reveals that the kitchen is the second most common place for domestic accidents. We argue that enhancing safety during cooking activities could be achieved via designing a cooking-safe environment based on insightful risk analysis and assessment study. This paper presents our study on risk analysis and assessment during cooking, in order to build a cooking-safe environment. The study is based on theoretical and real-world experimentations. Risk analysis and assessment enabled us to determine the three major risks (i.e., fire, burn and intoxication by gas/smoke) and the pertinent parameters to quantify these risks. The results reveal that the pertinent parameters are: concentrations of volatile organic compounds, alcohol, and carbon monoxide gases in the cooking smoke, utensil temperature, burner temperature, relative humidity, and presence of a utensil on burner. We present in details our study on risk analysis and assessment, including the methodology and the findings.  相似文献

A screening-level ecological risk assessment was applied to two extensive, but previously unanalyzed datasets from the middle Rio Grande (MRG) in New Mexico. The assessment evaluated how adverse water-quality effects from aquatic toxicants may have influenced the population decline of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow (Hybognathus amarus; silvery minnow). Standardized US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) screening-level ecological risk assessment procedures were applied to chemicals assessed in samples collected from the MRG between 1985 and 2003. Since more chemicals have established risk-screening criteria, relative to water-quality criteria, this approach produces more complete assessments. Chemical concentrations at some locations and times were potentially sufficient to affect fish health or produce localized mortalities. Many constituents displaying the highest risks have substantial natural sources within the watershed; native species likely would have adapted to natural instream concentrations such that actual risks might be markedly less than projected by a risk screening based on generic aquatic-life criteria. Also, highest risks found for individual and combinations of contaminants were very inconsistent both within and across the sites. As such, this risk assessment does not support the conclusion that toxicants were a primary factor causing the silvery minnow population to decline in the MRG between 1985 and 2003. The assessment indicates that sediment-borne, relative to water-borne, contaminants appeared to present the greatest risks to the silvery minnow and thus should have increased focus during future assessments of potential contaminant effects in the MRG. Contaminants of greatest concern are identified. This study presents approaches to cost-effectively assess and reduce uncertainties associated with potential water quality effects, and to help direct future assessments of water quality onto those contaminants likely to produce potentially significant effects. The techniques presented and criteria compiled are suitable for aiding similar assessments in other aquatic habitats.  相似文献

This paper describes a framework for assessment of the risk that a proposed machine or system, such as an aircraft or computer, will not operate to its required performance specifications when it is developed. The method is based upon decomposition of the system under assessment into a hierarchy of functionally or structurally defined assessment areas. Within each area, technical risks, and methods of assessing these risks, are identified. The framework provides a systematic structure for selecting assessment methods and integrating results of the use of selected methods into a coherent overall assessment of the system.  相似文献

The Lower Passaic River (LPR) in New Jersey has been impacted by variety of human activities over the course of the last two centuries. In this risk assessment, we assessed potential human health risks associated with consumption of fish from the LPR, the human exposure pathway of greatest concern when addressing contaminated sediments. Our risk assessment incorporates fish consumption information gathered during a year-long, intercept-style creel angler survey and representative fish tissue concentrations for 156 chemicals of potential concern (COPCs) obtained from USEPA's public database (OurPassaic website: http://www.ourpassaic.org/projectsites/premis_public/index.cfm?fuseaction=contaminants). Due to the large number of COPCs investigated, this risk assessment was divided into two phases: (1) identification of COPCs that contribute to the majority of overall excess cancer risk and hazard estimates using deterministic and probabilistic methods, and (2) probabilistic characterization of risk using distributions of chemical concentration and cooking loss for those compounds identified in Phase 1. Phase 1 relied on point estimates of COPC concentrations and demonstrated that PCDD/Fs and PCBs (dioxin-like and non-dioxin-like) are the greatest contributors to cancer risk, while non-dioxin-like PCBs are the primary contributors to non-cancer hazard estimates. Total excess cancer risks for adult and child and receptors estimated in Phase 1 were within USEPA's acceptable excess cancer risk range, with the exception of RME child (3.0 × 10− 4 and 1.3 × 10− 4 for deterministic and probabilistic approaches, respectively). Phase 2 focused on PCDD, PCDF, and PCBs and used distributions of chemical concentrations in fish. The results showed that all excess cancer risk estimates were within the acceptable risk range, although non-cancer hazard estimates for PCBs slightly exceeded a Hazard Index of 1. This HHRA of LPR fish ingestion represents the most comprehensive evaluation conducted to date, and demonstrates that measured concentrations of COPCs are not likely to pose a health risk to people who currently consume fish from the LPR.  相似文献
