This study was designed to establish whether phonological working memory skills could be assessed in children below 4 yrs of age. A group of 2- and 3-yr-old children were tested on 3 phonological memory measures (digit span, nonword repetition, and word repetition) and were also given tasks that tapped other cognitive skills. Scores on the 3 phonological memory tasks were closely related. In addition, repetition performance was linked with both vocabulary knowledge and articulation rate. Results indicate that phonological memory skills can be reliably assessed in very young children by using conventional serial span and repetition procedures. Earlier research established that preschool children pay less attention to television that is sequentially or linguistically incomprehensible. The authors of this study determined the youngest age for which this effect can be found. One hundred and three 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month-olds' looking and heart rate were recorded while they watched Teletubbies, a television program designed for very young children. Experimenters manipulated comprehensibility by either randomly ordering shots or reversing dialogue to become backward speech. Infants watched 1 normal segment and 1 distorted version of the same segment. Only 24-month-olds, and to some extent 18-month-olds, distinguished between normal and distorted videos by looking for longer durations toward the normal stimuli. The results suggest that it may not be until the middle of the second year that children demonstrate the earliest beginnings of comprehension of video as it is currently produced. Conducted 3 conservation experiments with a total of 164 3-6 yr. olds to determine whether young children understand the invariance of quantity. Results show that (a) even 3-yr-olds were able to transfer a quantity judgment over a perceptual transformation very well, (b) Ss only failed to make this kind of transfer when the judgments normally produced by the pre- and post-transformation displays were in direct conflict, and (c) training that some cues provide a more reliable basis for quantity judgments than others enabled Ss to transfer quantity judgments over perceptual transformations much more effectively than they had previously. It is concluded that very young children have a basic understanding of invariance, and that their real difficulty in quantity tasks is in distinguishing between a correct and an incorrect basis for quantity judgments. OBJECTIVE: To collect baseline data on energy and nutrient intake and nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of very young Mohawk children to assist the community in planning an appropriate, targeted nutrition and exercise intervention. DESIGN: Energy and nutrient intake data were collected from 24-hour recalls conducted in the children's homes. Nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behavior were assessed using a 38-item questionnaire that asked children to report on what foods they like the best, eat most of the time, and think are healthful. The questionnaire was completed in an elementary school on the reservation. Before data collection, we hypothesized that the average diet of the Mohawk children would not meet national dietary recommendations. SUBJECTS: One hundred forty-three children, prekindergarten through third grade (aged 4 to 9 years), completed the 24-hour recalls and the questionnaire. An additional 136 children, also prekindergarten through third grade, completed the questionnaire (n = 279). STATISTICS: Analysis of variance with a Scheffe's multiple-comparison test was used to test for differences among grades and genders for energy and nutrient intake and questionnaire scores. Multiple regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between eating behavior and selected variables. RESULTS: A mean daily energy intake of 1,980 kcal consisted of 34% fat, 13% protein, and 52% carbohydrate with 13 g fiber and 235 mg cholesterol. Food preferences were the strongest predictor of behavior, they explained 71% of the variation in the behavior score. APPLICATIONS: The major finding of this study, that food preferences are the strongest predictor of reported eating behavior in very young Mohawk children, has implications for behavior change interventions. Focusing on changing what children like to eat, through repeated exposure to new foods in a positive social context, is more likely to change what foods they choose than is simple nutrition education.  相似文献

34 3-yr-olds (Exp I), 23 2-yr-olds (Exp II), and 30 3-4 yr olds (Exp III) were presented a memory task that required recalling a particular location at the end of a delay. At the beginning of the delay, half of the children were instructed to remember the location and half were instructed simply to wait. 3-yr-olds who were instructed to remember were observed to engage in behaviors during the delay which seemed to increase their recall, in contrast to 3-yr-olds who were instructed to wait. Additional observations in Exp III also showed that a positive relation existed between such delay period memory behavior and later recall. Data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care were analyzed to explore effects of marital separation on children in the first 3 years of life. The sample included 73 never-married mothers and 97 separated mothers; a comparison group of 170 was conditionally randomly selected from the 2-parent families. Children in 2-parent families performed better than children in 1-parent families on assessments of cognitive and social abilities, problem behavior, attachment security, and behavior with mother. However, controlling for mothers' education and family income reduced these differences, and associations with separated-intact marital status were nonsignificant (the effect size was .01). Thus, children's psychological development was not affected by parental separation per se; it was related to mothers' income, education, ethnicity, childrearing beliefs, depressive symptoms, and behavior. The prognostic value of c-erbB-2 protein overexpression has been evaluated in 463 patients with operable breast cancer after a median follow-up of 66 months. Overexpression was observed in 99/463 (21%) of the breast tumors. It showed significant positive correlation to histological grade (p < 0.0001) and tumor size (p < 0.02). A relationship of borderline significance was observed between c-erbB-2 protein overexpression and negative or low estrogen receptor (ER) content. No significant correlation was found to lymph node involvement or proliferating tumor cell fraction as determined by the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). After a median follow-up of 66 months (range 6 to 109 months), the overall survival of all patients amounted to 63%. Multivariate analysis revealed lymph node involvement, tumor size, histological grade, histological type, c-erbB-2 protein overexpression, progesterone receptor (PR) content, and oral contraceptive use as independent prognostic factors. In an univariate analysis, the overall survival amounted to 72% and 38% of tumor patients with negative and positive c-erbB-2 protein overexpression, respectively. The most significant finding is that c-erbB-2 overexpression has been recognized as an independent predictive factor in subsets of tumor patients who would be expected to have a generally poor prognosis, such as those indicating axillary lymph node involvement, large tumor size (> 2 cm), and PR negativity.  相似文献

Conducted 2 studies to examine the behavior of young children in tasks demanding self-control. In Study 1, 27 2-yr-olds were observed in 1 task. Behavior during the task was described using a 10-category coding system, and proportion scores derived from the 10-category coding system were correlated with total time in the task. Results show that 5 of the 10 correlations were significant. Behaviors bringing the goals into attention were negatively correlated with total delay time, whereas behaviors taking the goal out of attention tended to be positively associated with delay. In Study 2, 82 children (aged 24–36 mo) were observed in 3 delay tasks. The behavioral strategy studied was directing attention away from the goal object during delay periods. Significant effects were found for age and task type. When the sample was divided into shorter vs longer waiters, it was found that the longer waiters looked away from the goal for a larger proportion of the time. It is suggested that young children use implicit strategies for controlling their behavior in the face of a social demand. Elite sport requires high training volumes. However, little is known about the relationship between training volume and performance development. This relationship appears to have an inverted U-shape. Short-term overtraining or overreaching is probably associated with insufficient metabolic recovery, resulting in a decline in ATP levels. Systemic overtraining or staleness is attributed to failure of the hypothalamus to cope with the total amount of stress. Clinically, a parasympathetic and sympathetic form has been distinguished. It is assumed that these two forms express different stages of staleness. No specific, simple, and reliable parameters are known to diagnose overreaching and overtraining in the earliest stage.  相似文献

Assessed the relation of teachers' ratings of young children's abilities, classroom skills, and personal-social characteristics to achievement (Wide Range Achievement Test) in school. Teachers' ratings of 217 children were obtained in the fall and spring of kindergarten and again in 2nd and 3rd grades. By the end of the 3rd grade, 146 children remained in the sample. A total of 63 teachers participated. Predictive validity of the ratings was high for both concurrent and subsequent achievement by the children. The sum of 4 ratings (Effective Learning, Retaining Information, Vocabulary, and Following Instructions) predicted achievement nearly as well as the entire battery of ratings. Average ratings were consistently higher for girls than for boys. Ratings made by mothers were less predictive of scholastic success than ratings made by teachers. Opinions on the necessity of nursing severely disabled infants (section 53 SGB V) are very often difficult for experts of sickness insurances, because even healthy infants in their first years require a much assistance and must be permanently looked after. By evaluating 17 such cases an attempt is made to find aspects of retardation of development and possibly simultaneously existing mental handicaps and moreover factors to substantiate a considerably greater need for help compared to normal infants of the same age.  相似文献

Studied the effects of 2 types of play experiences—constructive and dramatic—on preschool children's perspective-taking (PT) performance. Pretests and posttests for 3 types of PT (perceptual, cognitive, and affective) were administered to 51 preschoolers, (mean age 4 yrs 10 mo) in 3 groups. Group 1 received 10 constructive play sessions, Group 2 received 10 dramatic play sessions, and Group 3 received no play treatment. Both play treatments produced substantial and roughly equivalent improvements in PT. These effects were general across the 3 types of PT, and they were not constrained by the Ss' pretraining performance on the PT tests. In view of recent evidence that some PT measures may not be reliable, a follow-up reliability study was conducted with 48 preschool children, mean age 4 yrs 8 mo. The test–retest reliabilities of the instruments used in the main experiment were high (i.e., perceptual task .72, cognitive tasks .64 and .49, and affective tasks .53 and .68). Recorded early forms of cooperation and sharing displayed by 12-, 18-, and 24-mo-old children in the course of the children's interactions with their parents in a play setting. Eight children at each age were observed. One 12-, 7 18-, and 7 24-mo-olds engaged the parent in cooperative interchanges characterized by coordinated operations on a mutual array of toys. The children also shared by showing and giving objects to the parent. Showing was recorded for 7 of the 12-mo-olds and all of the older children, and giving was recorded for 4 12-, 8 18-, and 7 24-mo-olds. The sharing data for the 18-mo-olds did not depart reliably from previous findings. Both cooperative interchanges and sharing appeared to increase in frequency in the course of the 2nd year. The 3 behaviors were reliably interrelated. Although the relation of these activities to later sharing and cooperation is unclear, they serve contemporary prosocial functions and provide opportunities for further prosocial learning. On the basis of male and female sex stereotypes defined in a study of young adults, a children's picture-story technique known as the Sex Stereotype Measure was developed and administered to 284 Euro-American kindergartners and 2nd and 4th graders. Principal findings were (a) Kindergartners show an appreciable degree of knowledge of adult sex stereotypes. (b) This knowledge increases to the Grade 2 level but shows no further increase during the next 2 yrs. (c) Knowledge of sex stereotypes appears to develop in a similar manner among both boys and girls. (c) The male stereotype is learned at an earlier age than the female stereotype. (e) Expression of stereotypic responses sometimes is influenced by the sex of the examiner. It is concluded that this method represents a promising approach to the assessment of sex stereotypes in preschool and early school-age children. The authors examined the effects of welfare programs that increased maternal employment and family income on the development of very young children using data from 5 random-assignment experiments. The children were 6 months to 3 years old when their mothers entered the programs; cognitive and behavioral outcomes were measured 2?5 years later. While there were no overall program impacts, positive or negative, on the development of children in this age group, there was a pair of domain- and age-specific effects: The programs decreased positive social behavior among 1-year-olds and increased school achievement among 2-year-olds. After exploring several explanations for these results, the authors suggest that the contextual changes engendered by the programs, including children's exposure to center-based child care, interacted differentially with specific developmental transitions. A memory-based search task was used to investigate the organization of searching by 24 young children. The task required Ss to remember in what natural location a toy had been hidden. Both an older (25–30 mo of age) and a younger (18–23 mo of age) group of Ss achieved a high level of errorless retrievals. To examine Ss' ability to search differentially as a function of their own level of certainty that they remembered the location of the toy, 2 surprise trials were included in which the toy was hidden as usual but was then moved without the S's knowledge. Ss' search behavior on these surprise trials was compared to their error trials. Both age groups showed greater persistence in their initial search on surprise than on error trials, indicating that their retrieval effort was based on their level of subjective certainty. The 2 age groups displayed different patterns in the subsequent searching that they did: The older, but not the younger, Ss searched differently on surprise and error trials. On surprise trials they searched selectively and intelligently, confining their search primarily to locations that were nearby or in some way related to the place where the toy had actually been hidden. The related searching of the older Ss suggests that they had made intelligent guesses about plausible alternative locations for the missing toy. 48 18–30 mo olds received 6 trials in a simple memory-for-location task. Results suggest that performance was related to both increasing age and individual differences in self-control. Multiple regression analysis results suggest that the individual differences in self-control actually suppressed the effect of age in predicting the memory scores when both variables were entered together. Data are consistent with current research on memory development and extend previous findings (e.g., M. Perlmutter et al; see record 1981-07711-001) concerning the relationship between impulsive responding and performance in such tasks. Results are discussed with respect to individual difference approaches to aspects of psychological functioning often considered only from a purely cognitive standpoint. 90 infants with intrauterine growth retardation (IGR) and 100 normal infants (control group) were followed up from 5 days till 3 years of life. In IGR infants there was a more frequent combination of several neurologic syndromes, an early manifestation of motor disorders (from the very moment of birth), a delay of neuro-psychic development (during the first year of life), a tendency to development of moderate hydrocephalus by the age of 6 months. Autonomic-visceral disorders in them were mostly characterized by the symptoms of abaissement, but not of irritation.  相似文献

Cyclin D1 overexpression, detected by standard immunohistochemistry, was correlated with other prognostic variables and its prognostic value was evaluated in a group of 148 invasive breast cancers with long-term follow-up. Overexpression of cyclin D1 (59% of cases) was negatively correlated (chi 2 test) with histological grade (P = 0.0001), mean nuclear area (P = 0.004), mean nuclear volume (P = 0.02), and mitotic activity (P = 0.03) and positively correlated with estrogen receptor (P = 0.0001). There was a strong correlation between cyclin D1 overexpression and histological type (P = 0.0001). Positive cyclin D1 staining was seen in 11 of 13 tubular carcinomas, 3 of 3 mucinous carcinomas, 4 of 4 invasive cribriform carcinomas, and 17 of 20 lobular carcinomas. Of 102 ductal cancers, 52 were positive, and all 6 medullary carcinomas were negative. There were no significant correlations with lymph node status, tumor size, or DNA ploidy. In survival analysis, cyclin D1 overexpression did not provide significant univariate or multivariate prognostic value. In conclusion, cyclin D1 is mainly overexpressed in the well differentiated and lobular types of invasive breast cancer and is strongly associated with estrogen receptor positivity. It is negatively correlated with the proliferation marker mitoses count and with the differentiation markers nuclear area and nuclear volume. However, cyclin D1 overexpression does not seem to have prognostic value in invasive breast cancer when no adjuvant treatment is given.  相似文献
