Mastering a Steel Treatment Unit in an Oxygen-Converter Shop

A unit designed to treat steel (UST) was introduced in the oxygen-converter shop of the Mechel plant to expand the product mix, improve the quality of the steel, and make it more competitive. During its startup, the shop mastered the production of ao steels 20G2R, 40Kh, 50KhGFA, 60S2A, and other grades.

Development of continuous casting at OAO MMK

The introduction of continuous casting at OAO MMK was a historic event, marking the end of uneconomical chill casting. Thanks to the introduction of continuous casting in the oxygen-converter shop, improvement in casting-machine design, and expansion of the range of steel that can be cast, unique casting characteristics have been attained: high productivity (more than 10 million t/yr), long casting runs (up to 208 melts), infrequent accidents, low rejection rates of the steel, and high quality of the continuous-cast slabs. The introduction of continuous casting in the converter shop provided a stimulus to the reconstruction of the open-hearth shop as an electrosmelting shop and the installation there of two bar-casting machines and one slab-casting machine.

This article describes several variants for carbonizing steel. It is preferable to carbonize steel with a carbon-bearing material in lump form (5–20-mm fraction) as the steel is tapped from an arc steelmaking furnace. Comparative results are presented on the quality of continuous-cast semifinished products obtained with the use of different variants of the carbonization technology. N. N. Shakirov, A. N. Improving the Out-of-Furnace Treatment of Wheel Steel by Using an Integrated Technology

It has been shown that a new out-of-furnace treatment complex can be used in the open-hearth shop of the Vyksa Metallurgical Plant to make wheel steel that fully satisfies the existing requirements of the Russian Ministry of Railroads. The improved technology is distinguished by lower consumption indices due to the conservation of ferroalloys and alloying materials, shortening of the treatment, and stabilization of the conditions under which it is administered. Optimizing roller operation in the 5000 mill at OAO MMK

Since 2009, numerous failures of the working rollers in the 5000 mill at OAO MMK have been observed, on account of fracture of the drive pins. Efforts to resolve this problem are described.     

Using coke fines in the blast furnaces at OAO MMK

The influence of coke quality on its replacement by coke nuts is investigated. Analysis shows that, for coke of higher quality, a greater proportion may be replaced by coke nuts. When coke nuts fines are mixed with ore, the porosity of the batch is not impaired; on charging by means of a separate skip, by contrast, the porosity may be reduced by 5.7—7.6%. Hence, forcing of the furnace process is possible.
