Standards for university training in clinical psychology and counseling psychology previously published in the American Psychologist which serve as criteria for evaluating curricula submitted for approval as doctoral training programs are briefly summarized under the following major headings and subheadings: I. Staff—basic staff, clinical or counseling staff; II. Content Areas—general psychology, psychodynamics of behavior, diagnostic methods, psychotherapy and counseling, research methods, related disciplines; III. Facilities and Equipment—offices and classrooms, laboratory space and equipment and shop facilities, practicum facilities, library, student seminar or reading rooms; IV. Overall Atmosphere of the Department. Internships are also discussed in terms of staff, prerequisites of students accepted, content and methods of practicum training, and facilities for study and research. Not all clinical health psychologists are trained as clinical psychologists. A significant minority is trained and identifies as counseling psychologists. As a field, it is important to understand how the specialty-specific values, training context, scholarship, and parameters of practice of counseling psychology contribute to clinical health psychology. In this article, we (a) identify the core values and training context of counseling psychology, (b) review the scholarly history of clinical health psychology by counseling psychologists, (c) present the parameters of practice of clinical health psychology as identified from the extant counseling psychology literature, and (d) examine American Psychological Association membership status to investigate joint membership in the Division of Health Psychology and the Society of Counseling Psychology. Conclusions indicate that (a) an identifiable set of core values guides the training of counseling psychologists, (b) scholarly literature by counseling psychologists has contributed to the growth and development of clinical health psychology, and (c) parameters of practice reflect the specialty-specific perspective of counseling psychology. As professional psychology continues to grow as a health care profession, clinical health psychology will benefit from the knowledge, values, attitudes, competencies, and practice parameters of counseling psychology, and counseling psychology will benefit from recognizing what it brings to the practice of clinical health psychology. Scholars within the field of counseling psychology have for some time now articulated eloquent and compelling calls for attending to social justice in the social sciences. To date, counseling psychologists have been at the forefront of addressing social justice issues in research, practice, and professional development. The present study advances empirical perspectives on social justice by testing the external validity of M. J. Miller et al.'s (2009) social-cognitive model of social justice interest and commitment in a sample of 229 doctoral trainees in counseling psychology. Present findings support the ability of the model to explain, in part, counseling psychology trainees' social justice interest and commitment. In addition, the present study provides novel findings that demonstrate the direct and indirect ways in which program training environment and personal moral imperative relate to social justice interest and commitment. The authors discuss the internship supply demand situation from the perspectives of counseling psychology (CP) training programs by incorporating the viewpoints of CP training directors (TDs), garnered through an online survey. Survey results indicated relatively lower match rates for the preceding year (2007), increased stress among students, and TD concerns about decreased emphases on science training. The authors offer strategies regarding the resolution of this difficult situation, including increased mentoring and individualized practicum planning (program level), the development of captive internship sites and slots, particularly in underserved areas (subspecialty level), and data collection and sharing techniques (field level). Both fields have similar historical roots and sources of impetus, both apply clinical methods, and both exhibit "a trend toward the relative devaluation of diagnosis." The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive utility of achievement goal theory relative to the outcome of interest in research. The sample consisted of 114 doctoral students in counseling psychology. Results indicated that achievement goals accounted for 24% of the variance in interest in research over and above demographic and social-cognitive/contextual variables. Mastery approach and performance avoidance goals were shown to be significant positive and negative predictors of interest in research, respectively. In addition, age, year in program, and research outcome expectations were found to be significantly associated with interest in research. Implications for research training are discussed. "1 out of every 15 doctoral degrees granted by US universities since 1920 has been in psychology. The total for the 43 yr. 1920-1962 inclusive was 11,951. During the 1920s the proportion was almost 5?% of all doctorates; in the depression years of 1930s it dropped progressively to about 4%, and dropped again during World War II to 3.3%. After the war, the proportion of psychologists among all doctoral holders climbed steadily to about 8% in the early 1950s, and has remained in the 7%-9% range for the past decade." The qualitative action-project method is described as an appropriate and heuristic qualitative research method for use in counseling psychology. Action theory, which addresses human intentional, goal-directed action, project, and career, provides the conceptual framework for the method. Data gathering and analysis involve multiple procedures to access information from 3 perspectives: manifest behavior, internal processes, and social meaning. The method has a number of advantages, including its conceptualization, which is close to human experience; its systematic data gathering and analysis procedures; its usefulness in describing processes of interest to counseling psychologists; and its uniqueness among qualitative research methods.
