Nanocomposites of natural rubber (NR) and unmodified clay were prepared by latex compounding method. Phenolic resin (PhOH) was used to crosslink NR. Crosslinked neat NR was also prepared for comparison. The structure–property relationship of uncrosslinked and crosslinked NR/clay nanocomposites was examined to verify the reinforcement mechanism. Microstructure of NR/clay nanocomposites was studied by using transmission electron microscopic (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) analyses. The results showed the evidence of intercalated clay together with clay tactoids for the nanocomposite samples. The highest tensile strength was achieved for the crosslinked NR/clay nanocomposite. The onset strain of deformation induced the crystallization of NR for nanocomposites was found at almost the same strain, and furthermore their crystallization was developed at lower strain than that of the crosslinked neat NR because of the clay orientation and alignment. However, at high strain region, the collaborative crystallization process related to the clay dispersion and conventional crosslink points in the NR was responsible to considerably high tensile strength of the crosslinked NR/clay nanocomposite. Based on these analyses, a mechanistic model for the strain‐induced crystallization and orientational evolution of a network structure of PhOH‐crosslinked NR/clay nanocomposite was proposed. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The strain‐induced crystallization (SIC) behaviors of crosslinked blends based on natural rubber (NR) and trans‐1,4‐polyisoprene (TPI) with different content of TPI were probed explored by using synchrotron two‐dimensional wide angle X‐ray diffraction and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results showed that when TPI content is less than 70% no reflection peak of TPI but NR crystallite diffractions can be observed and the diffractions of TPI βform appear when TPI content is 70 wt % in the cocured blend. SIC of cocured blends started at smaller strain ratio than the pure NR. By calculating ΔSdef, it is found that the drop in entropy upon strain decreased when TPI is incorporated into NR due to the reduction of molecular mobility of NR. The degree of SIC and crystallization rate index in crosslinked blends monotonously decreased with the increase of TPI content. The apparent crystallite size exhibited some surprising variations. L200 and L120 decreased with the increase of TPI content in the cocured blends. These observations were usually caused by two factors: (i) Less number of polymer chains could involve in crystal growth due to the lower mobility of polymer chains in the cocured blends which is proved by dynamic mechanical analysis results; (ii) The mean distance between nuclei decreases, which was caused by the fluctuation of crosslink density in NR phase derived from the heterogeneous distribution of curatives in two phases supported by the varying tendency of curing degree and crosslink density. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural rubber (NR)–clay (clay is montmorillonite) and chloroprene rubber (CR)–clay nanocomposites were prepared by co‐coagulating the rubber latex and clay aqueous suspension. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the layers of clay were dispersed in the NR matrix at a nano level, and the aspect ratio (width/thickness) of the platelet inclusions was reduced and clay layers aligned more orderly during the compounding operation on an open mill. However, X‐ray diffraction indicated that there were some nonexfoliated clay layers in the NR matrix. Stress–strain curves showed that the moduli of NR were significantly improved with the increase of the amount of clay. At the same time, the clay layers inhibited the crystallization of NR on stretch, especially clay content of more than 10 phr. Compared with the carbon‐black‐filled NR composites, NR–clay nanocomposites exhibited high hardness, high modulus, high tear strength, and excellent antiaging and gas barrier properties. Similar to NR–clay nanocomposites, CR–clay nanocomposites also exhibited high hardness, high modulus, and high tear strength. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization behavior of polychloroprene rubber (CR) has been studied in this work. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied to characterize the crystallization behavior. And X‐ray diffraction was applied to determine the impact of crosslinking on the crystallization of CR. Synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (SXRD) method was applied to study the dynamic crystalline behavior. On the basis of the experimental results, it is found that crosslinking will hamper the crystallization of CR while large strain can restore this course. And this is in accord with the Mooney‐Rivlin analysis result. Detailed discussion was offered circling around this phenomenon. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

The strain‐induced crystallization of natural rubber (NR) was investigated by the measurement of the tear energy of a crosslinked blend consisting of NR and noncrystalline styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR). When NR was dispersed into the SBR matrix, the tear energy of SBR increased at various temperatures and tear rates. After the application of the principle of time–temperature superposition to the tear energy according to the Williams–Landel–Ferry equation, two distinct curves were found for the NR/SBR blend with respect to the reduced tear rate, despite the fact that the tear energy of SBR or the SBR/SBR blend gave its own single composite curve. When the fatty acid in the NR/SBR blend was removed by acetone extraction, the tear energy of the blend drew a single composite curve. The conversion of the two curves into the single composite curve for the NR/SBR blend suggested that the tear energy depended on the strain‐induced crystallization of NR dispersed in the SBR matrix, which was suppressed by the removal of the fatty acid. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymer nanocomposite (PNC) films consisted of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and sodium cations montmorillonite (MMT) clay were prepared by aqueous solution casting and direct melt press compounding techniques, whereas the films of PEO with trimethyl octadecyl ammonium cations organo‐modified montmorillonite (OMMT) clay were formed by melt pressed technique. The clay concentrations in the nanocomposites used are 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 20 wt % of the PEO weight. The X‐ray diffraction patterns of these nanocomposites were measured in the angular range (2θ) of 3.8–30°. The values of basal spacing d001 of MMT/OMMT, clay gallery width Wcg, d‐spacings of PEO crystal reflections d120 and d112, and their corresponding crystallite size L, and the peaks intensity I (counts) were determined for these nanocomposites. Results reveal that the nanocomposites have intercalated clay structures and the amount of intercalation increases with the increase of clay concentration. As compared to melt pressed PEO–MMT nanocomposites, the amount of clay intercalation is higher in aqueous solution cast nanocomposites. At 20 wt % MMT dispersion in PEO matrix, the solution cast PEO–MMT nanocomposite almost changes into amorphous phase. The melt press compounded PEO–OMMT films show more intercalation as compared to the PEO–MMT nanocomposites prepared by same technique. In melt pressed nanocomposites, the PEO crystalline phase significantly reduces when clay concentration exceeds 3 wt %, which is evidenced by the decrease in relative intensity of PEO principal crystalline peaks. The effect of interactions between the functional group (ethylene oxide) of PEO and layered sheets of clay on both the main crystalline peaks of PEO was separately analyzed using their XRD parameters in relation to structural conformations of these nanocomposites. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyamide‐11 (PA11)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ intercalative polymerization. The crystal morphology and crystallization kinetics of these nanocomposites were investigated via polarized light microscopy (PLM), small‐angle laser scattering (SALS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). PA‐11 can crystallize into well‐formed spherulites, while only very tiny crystallites were observed by PLM and SALS for the nanocomposites. Both isothermal and non‐isothermal crystallization methods were employed to investigate the crystallization kinetics by DSC. Both techniques showed an increased crystallization rate with the addition of clay. However, the Avrami exponent decreased with the addition of clay in isothermal crystallization but showed a wide range of values depending on the cooling rate in the non‐isothermal crystallization. The changes in crystal morphology and crystallization kinetics can be understood as being due to the ‘supernucleating’ effect of the nanodispersed clay layers.

γ‐Radiation vulcanized natural rubber (RVNR)/phase transfer/suspension polymerization technique was used to prepare high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) in bead form. The high notched Izod impact resistance of HIPS based on RVNR was observed and compared with that of unmodified PS. The impact resistance of HIPS based on RVNR was further enhanced by addition of 10% of polystyrene‐block‐polyisoprene‐block‐polystyrene copolymer. A mesh structure of all crosslinked rubber particles containing polystyrene and long crazes in HIPS were observed under electron microscopy. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates exhibit good mechanical properties compared to vulcanizates of synthetic rubbers. Incorporation of a conventional filler at higher loadings to NR enhances its modulus, while reduction in tensile strength and elongation. This paper presents a new strategy for development of a NR‐clay nanocomposite with enhanced mechanical properties by incorporation of lower loadings (2–8 phr) of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide modified montmorillonite clay (OMMT‐C) under acid‐free environment. The effect of OMMT‐C loading on cure characteristics, rubber‐filler interactions, crosslink density, dynamic mechanical thermal properties, and mechanical properties were evaluated. Incorporation of OMMT‐C accelerated the vulcanization process and enhanced mechanical properties. X‐ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the formation of intercalated clay structures at lower OMMT‐C loadings, and clay aggregates at higher loadings. A nanocomposite at OMMT‐C loading of 2 phr exhibited the best balanced mechanical properties, and was associated with highest crosslink density and rubber–filler interactions. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of morphology of the epoxy/poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) system and corresponding nanocomposites with organophilized layered silicate on PCL crystallization was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained indicate a significant affecting of nonisothermal PCL crystallization by phase morphology brought about by the reaction‐induced phase separation (RIPS) influenced either by various nanoclay contents or the epoxy/PCL ratio. Dispersed morphology of PCL matrix with epoxy globules induces crystallization at higher temperatures. The inverse dispersed morphology of epoxy matrix with PCL inclusions causes crystallization at lower temperature. The co‐continuous morphology induces crystallization in both steps. Rate of the second crystallization step is substantially higher than that in the first step. No nucleation effect has been found in the nanocomposites with the added nanofiller. Multicomponent samples show retarded crystallization, i.e., lower crystallinities and lower overall crystallization rate compared with neat PCL. The results obtained suggest that it is primarily morphological/interfacial effects that play a decisive role in the crystallization behavior of PCL in the epoxy/PCL/clay system. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on the character of a clay that could be separated into many 1‐nm thickness monolayers, clay styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites were acquired by mixing the SBR latex with a clay/water dispersion and coagulating the mixture. The structure of the dispersion of clay in the SBR was studied through TEM. The mechanical properties of clay/SBR nanocomposites with different filling amounts of clay were studied. The results showed that the main structure of the dispersion of clay in the SBR was a layer bundle whose thickness was 4–10 nm and its aggregation formed by several or many layer bundles. Compared with the other filler, some mechanical properties of clay/SBR nanocomposites exceeded those of carbon black/SBR composites and they were higher than those of clay/SBR composites produced by directly mixing clay with SBR through regular rubber processing means. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The influence of nanoclay particles on the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of intercalated polyethylene (PE) prepared by melt‐compounding was investigated. It is observed that the crystallization peak temperature (Tp) of PE/clay nanocomposites is slightly but consistently higher than the neat PE at various cooling rates. The half‐time (t0.5) for crystallization decreased with increase in clay content, implying the nucleating role of nanoclay particles. The nonisothermal crystallization data are analyzed using the approach of Avrami (Polymer 1971, 12, 150), Ozawa (Polym Eng Sci 1997, 37, 443), and Mo and coworkers (J Res Natl Bur Stand 1956, 57, 217), and the validity of the different kinetic models to the nonisothermal crystallization process of PE/clay nanocomposites is discussed. The approach developed by Mo and coworkers successfully explains the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PE and PE/clay nanocomposites. The activation energy for nonisothermal crystallization of neat PE and PE/clay nanocomposites is determined using the Kissinger (J Res Natl Bur Stand 1956, 57, 217) method. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We performed dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice polymer model to investigate strain‐induced crystallization behaviors of short‐chain branched polymers with variable sequence distributions, branch numbers and lengths, and their blending compositions with linear polymers. The results revealed that the branch density and distribution bring dominant effects. In the blends, there is no phase separation prior to crystallization, except that strain‐enhanced mixing is temporarily hindered by chain folding upon crystallization. Our observations shed lights onto the strain‐induced crystallization of short‐chain branched polymers. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization behavior of high density polyethylene (HDPE) containing various zero, one, and two dimensional (0‐D, 1‐D, and 2‐D) carbon nanofillers were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry. For a given temperature, the isothermal crystallization incubation time of HDPE became longer with the addition of lower dimensional carbon nanofillers, and the isothermal crystallization rate got slower. The values of Avrami and Tobin exponents indicated that the isothermal crystallization of HDPE followed two‐dimensional crystal growth in the presence of 2‐D and 1‐D carbon nanofillers, while exhibited three‐dimensional heterogeneous crystal growth in the presence of 0‐D carbon nanofillers. Contrary to the isothermal study, the nonisothermal crystallization of HDPE was accelerated in the presence of lower dimensional nanofillers. The nonisothermal crystallization data were finally analyzed using Ozawa and Mo methods. It was observed that only Mo approach could successfully describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of HDPE and HDPE/carbon nanocomposites. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The nanocomposite films comprising polymer blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with montmorillonite (MMT) clay as nanofiller were prepared by aqueous solution casting method. The X‐ray diffraction studies of the PVA–x wt % MMT, (PVA–PVP)–x wt % MMT, (PVA–PEO)–x wt % MMT and (PVA–PEG)–x wt % MMT nanocomposites containing MMT concentrations x = 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 wt % of the polymer weight were carried out in the angular range (2θ) of 3.8–30°. The values of MMT basal spacing d001, expansion of clay gallery width Wcg, d‐spacing of polymer spherulite, crystallite size L and diffraction peak intensity I were determined for these nanocomposites. The values of structural parameters reveal that the linear chain PEO and PEG in the PVA blend based nanocomposites promote the amount of MMT intercalated structures, and these structures are found relatively higher for the (PVA–PEO)–x wt % MMT nanocomposites. It is observed that the presence of bulky ester‐side group in PVP backbone restricts its intercalation, whereas the adsorption behavior of PVP on the MMT nanosheets mainly results the MMT exfoliated structures in the (PVA–PVP)–x wt % MMT nanocomposites. The crystallinities of the PEO and PEG were found low due to their blending with PVA, which further decreased anomalously with the increase of MMT concentration in the nanocomposites. The decrease of polymer crystalline phase of these materials confirmed their suitability in preparation of novel solid polymer nanocomposite electrolytes. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Nylon 6‐clay hybrid/neat nylon 6, sheath/core bicomponent nanocomposite fibers containing 4 wt % of clay in sheath section, were melt spun at different take‐up speeds. Their molecular orientation and crystalline structure were compared to those of neat nylon 6 fibers. Moreover, the morphology of the bicomponent fibers and dispersion of clay within the fibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Birefringence measurements showed that the orientation development in sheath part was reasonably high while core part showed negligibly low birefringence. Results of differential scanning calorimetry showed that crystallinity of bicomponent fibers was lower than that of neat nylon 6 fibers. The peaks of γ‐crystalline form were observed in the wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction of bicomponent and neat nylon 6 fibers in the whole take‐up speed, while α‐crystalline form started to appear at high speeds in bicomponent fibers. TEM micrographs revealed that the clay platelets were individually and evenly dispersed in the nylon 6 matrix. The neat nylon 6 fibers had a smooth surface while striped pattern was observed on the surface of bicomponent fibers containing clay. This was speculated to be due to thermal shrinkage of the core part after solidification of the sheath part in the spin‐line. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this work, high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)‐based nanocomposites having different concentrations of Sepiolite (1–10 wt %) and compatibilizer, that is, PE‐graft‐maleic anhydride (PE‐g‐MA) of varying molecular weight and maleic anhydride content were prepared by melt compounding. The influence of Sepiolite amount and compatibilizer polarity and molar mass on the crystallization behavior [differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD)], rheological properties (oscillatory rheometer) and dimensional stability [dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and heat deflection temperature (HDT)] of the nanocomposites was investigated. It was found that Sepiolite did not affect the crystallization behavior of HDPE. The rheological results show that the incorporation of Sepiolite into HDPE matrix up to 10 wt % increases the complex viscosity of polymer. Storage modulus and loss modulus both in oscillatory rheometry and in DMA were highest for nanocomposite prepared using 10 wt % Sepiolite owing to the improved mechanical restrain by the dispersed phase. In the presence of compatibilizer, the values of storage modulus and loss modulus were lower as compared to uncompatibilized nanocomposites at same loading of Sepiolite. The reduction in modulus is more pronounced in composites prepared using compatibilizer of lower molar mass as compared to those prepared using higher molar mass compatibilizer. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural rubber composites were prepared by the incorporation of palm ash at different loadings into a natural rubber matrix with a laboratory‐size two‐roll mill (160 × 320 mm2) maintained at 70 ± 5°C in accordance with the method described by ASTM D 3184–89. A coupling agent, maleated natural rubber (MANR), was used to improve the mechanical properties of the natural rubber composites. The results indicated that the scorch time and cure time decreased with increasing filler loading, whereas the maximum torque exhibited an increasing trend. Increasing the palm ash loading increased the tensile modulus, but the tensile strength, fatigue life, and elongation at break decreased. The rubber–filler interactions of the composites decreased with increasing filler loading. Scanning electron microscopy of the tensile fracture surfaces of the composites and rubber–filler interaction studies showed that the presence of MANR enhanced the interfacial interaction of the palm ash filler and natural rubber matrix. The presence of MANR also enhanced the tensile properties and fatigue life of palm‐ash‐filled natural rubber composites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

The melt fusion zone (MFZ) of polyethylene pipe was investigated employing synchrotron wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray scattering at various locations in MFZ by changing X‐ray incidence angles to probe three‐dimensional structural features. It was determined that the crystals were oriented in two different modes. One is that the polymer chains are oriented parallel to the joint interface line consistently throughout the MFZ. The other is that the crystals are oriented in particular directions depending on the positions in MFZ. The combination of pressure and melt flow during joining process resulted in such a complex structure. It was notable that the boundary of MFZ against the base material was found to be very different depending on the structures involved such as crystallographic unit orientation, lamellae orientation, crystallinity, and spherulitic morphology. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
