Adding β‐nucleating agents (β‐NAs) has been generally considered as an effective approach to induce the formation of β‐crystals in propylene‐ethylene random copolymer (PPR). However, it is still difficult to obtain the expected percentage of β‐crystal under normal processing conditions, due to the temperature control is always a key factor no matter with or without adding β‐NAs. We assumed that simultaneously adding both α‐ and β‐NAs to PPR in rational ratios would facilitate the growth of β‐crystal. The effects of adding various amount of α‐ and/or β‐NAs on the α‐ and β‐crystallization behavior and morphology were investigated. More importantly, the influence of temperature control on inducing β‐crystal in the presence of different NAs was parallel explored by utilizing sample bars prepared via injection molding and sample pipes produced from a typical industrial extrusion line. Different crystallization situations were carefully discussed in response to various nonisothermal crystallization processes in laboratory experiments and in actual pipes extrusion. At last, the mechanical properties of PPR samples were examined to provide new clues for further study of PPR pipes. POLYM. ENG. The effect of α‐ and β‐nucleating agents (NA) of various amounts on the fracture behavior of polypropylene‐co‐ethylene (CPP) was evaluated using the essential work of fracture (EWF) method. The specific EWF values of CPPs incorporated with α‐NA of different amount were all lower than that of pure CPP, while the specific nonessential work of fracture was the highest at relative low α‐NA loading (0.1 wt %), and then decreased with further increasing amount of α‐NA. Similar trend of variation was observed with increasing amount of β‐NA in CPP, and it was found that the variation of Kβ for β‐NA nucleated CPP versus NA content accorded well with the EWF versus NA content, which indicated that the addition of β‐NA could lead to effectively increased β‐crystal content and consequently improved fracture resistance of CPP. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of a β‐nucleating agent (β‐NA) on the properties and structure of a commercial impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) was investigated. The effect of selected β‐NAs on the impact resistance, stress and strain behaviour of the IPC is reported. In addition, the IPC was fractionated according to crystallinity by preparative temperature rising elution fractionation. Fractions with varying chemical composition and crystallinity were treated with a two‐component β‐NA to investigate the effect of the β‐NA on the various fractions. The results indicate that the efficacy of the β‐NA is dependent on the chemical composition of the polymer that crystallises, more specifically on the sequence length of crystallisable propylene units. The effect of the addition of β‐NAs on the overall morphology of the IPC was also investigated, and in particular the size and distribution of the rubbery particles in these complex reactor blends were probed. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Zinc adipate (Adi‐Zn) was observed to be a highly active and selective β‐nucleating agent for isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The effects of Adi‐Zn on the mechanical properties and the β‐crystals content of nucleated iPP were investigated. The impact strength of iPP nucleated with 0.2 wt % Adi‐Zn was 1.8 times higher than that of neat iPP. In addition, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analysis indicated that the content of β‐crystals in nucleated iPP (kβ value) reached 0.973 with 0.1 wt % Adi‐Zn, indicating that Adi‐Zn is a highly active and selective β‐nucleating agent for iPP. Furthermore, fast scanning chip calorimetry (FSC) studies using cooling rates from 60 to 13,800 °C min?1 revealed that the formation of β‐crystals significantly depended on the cooling rates. At cooling rates below 3000 °C min?1, only β‐crystals existed. However, at cooling rates above 6000 °C min?1, β‐crystals failed to form. Moreover, a lower critical crystallization temperature that corresponded to the generation of β‐crystals was investigated using cooling‐induced crystallization, and the results are in good agreement with those of a previous study. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. On the premise that shear in the slit die of an extruder was minimized as far as possible, β‐nucleated isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was extruded. Simultaneously, once the extrudate (in the melt state) left the die exit, it was stretched at various stretching rates (SRs). For iPP with a low content of β‐nucleating agent (β‐NA), the crystallinity of β‐phase (Xβ) initially increases with increasing SR, and then decreases slightly with further increase in SR. However, for iPP containing a higher content of β‐NA, with increasing SR, Xβ decreases monotonically, indicating a negative effect of SR on β‐phase formation. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering and polarized optical microscopy experiments reveal that, when SR is less than 30 cm min?1, the increasing amount of row nuclei induced by increasing SR is mainly responsible for the increase of Xβ. In contrast, when SR exceeds 30 cm min?1, the overgrowth of shish structures unexpectedly restrains the development of β‐phase, and spatial confinement is considered as a better explanation for the suppression of β‐phase. A novel highly efficient β‐nucleating agent for isotactic polypropylene (iPP), hexahydrophthalic barium (HHPA‐Ba), was found and its effects on the mechanical properties, the β‐phase content, and crystallization behavior of iPP were investigated, respectively. The results show that the β‐phase content of nucleated iPP (kβ value) can reach 80.2% with 0.4 wt % HHPA‐Ba. The impact strength and crystallization peak temperature of nucleated iPP are greatly increased. Compared with pure iPP, the impact strength of nucleated iPP can increase 2.4 times. Meanwhile, the spherulite size of nucleated iPP is dramatically decreased than that of pure iPP. The Caze method was used to investigate the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nucleated iPP and the crystallization active energy was achieved by Kissinger method. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we reported calcium tetrahydrophthalate as a high efficient β‐nucleating agent (β‐NA) for impact‐resistant polypropylene copolymer (IPC). The relative fraction of the β‐crystal can reach as high as 93.5% when only 0.03% β‐NA is added. The non‐isothermal and isothermal crystallization behaviors, morphology, lamellar structure and mechanical properties of IPCs with various β‐NA contents were studied. During non‐isothermal crystallization, the cooling rate has an important influence on the relative fraction of the β‐crystal, which decreases remarkably as the cooling rate increases. The β‐NA also greatly accelerates crystallization rate of IPC, resulting from both more crystal nuclei and larger Avrami exponent. The small angle X‐ray scattering characterization shows that more amorphous components are included into the inter‐lamellae after addition of β‐NA. Dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals that the storage modulus at low temperature and the loss factor above 0 °C from the PP component can be enhanced upon addition of β‐NA and reach a maximum at the β‐NA content of 0.05 wt %. Impact test shows that the impact strength of the IPC at 0°C can be improved as much as 40% when the content of calcium tetrahydrophthalate is 0.10 wt %. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. This study covers the preparation and the characterization of β‐nucleated impact polypropylene copolymer (NA‐IPC). Calcium stearate (CaSt), as well as pimelic (Pim) and adipic (Adi) acids, were doped into IPC as mono‐ or bicomponent nucleating agents (NAs) at varying mass ratios. Possible chemical interactions between the NAs and with IPC, as well as the effect of the NAs on the crystallization behavior and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics, were investigated. DSC and XRD results revealed that IPC nucleated with Pim and Pim‐CaSt nucleants induced up to 90% β‐crystals, whereas Adi and Adi‐CaSt formed only about 17% β‐crystals. This was associated with the strong nucleation efficiency of Pim. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics showed that the crystallization of IPC and NA‐IPC followed a three‐dimensional growth with athermal nucleation mechanism. FTIR showed that none of the NAs chemically reacted with IPC, and the chemical structure of the polymer was thus intact during the treatment. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The phase morphology and toughening behavior of impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) with and without nucleating agent (NA), prepared at different processing melt temperatures (Tp), were investigated. Interestingly, three different structures can be formed in the IPC samples by adding NA or tuning Tp. A well‐defined core–shell structure is obtained in samples with α‐NA or without NA prepared at all Tp. A developing multilayered structure is mainly formed at high Tp with added β‐NA, while an incomplete phase separation structure with interpenetrating chains is the dominant structure for IPC samples prepared at low Tp with added β‐NA. In this case, because of the synergistic effect between phase morphology and relatively high β‐form crystal content, the chain interaction among the components and chain mobility of the amorphous portion of IPC are distinctly improved, resulting in a largely improved toughness under 0 °C. This improvement in toughness is very important for applications. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polymer processing methods generally play a crucial role in determining the development of microstructure in the fabricated product. In this study, isotactic polypropylene (iPP) melt containing 0.05 wt % β‐nucleating agent (β‐NA) was extruded via a melt flow rate indicator. The molten extrudate was stretched into a fiber upon various take‐up velocities (TVs). The microstructures of the fiber were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter, two‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Also, its tensile properties (including tensile strength, modulus, elongation at break, and toughness) were measured by tensile test. Interestingly, the tensile strength (135.0 MPa) of a melt‐spun β‐nucleated iPP fiber fabricated at 400 cm/min was enhanced by 115.2%, compared with that (62.7 MPa) prepared at 100 cm/min, with a considerable increment in toughness (from 661 to 853 MJ/m3). The enhancement mechanism for tensile properties was discussed based on the microstructures. This work offers a simple approach to prepare β‐nucleated iPP fibers with excellent strength and toughness. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 43454.  相似文献

In this study, the melt structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nucleated with α/β compounded nucleating agents (α/β‐CNA, composed of the α‐NA of 0.15 wt % Millad 3988 and the β‐NA of 0.05 wt % WBG‐II) was tuned by changing the fusion temperature Tf. In this way, the role of melt structure on the crystallization behavior and polymorphic composition of iPP were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that when Tf = 200°C (iPP was fully molten), the α/β‐CNA cannot encourage β‐phase crystallization since the nucleation efficiency (NE) of the α‐NA 3988 was obviously higher than that of the β‐NA WBG‐II. Surprisingly, when Tf was in 179–167°C, an amount of ordered structures survived in the melt, resulting in significant increase of the proportion of β‐phase (achieving 74.9% at maximum), indicating that the ordered structures of iPP played determining role in β‐phase crystallization of iPP nucleated with the α/β‐CNA. Further investigation on iPP respectively nucleated with individual 3988 and WBG‐II showed that as Tf decreased from 200°C to 167°C, the crystallization peak temperature Tc of iPP/3988 stayed almost constant, while Tc of iPP/WBG‐II increased gradually when Tf < 189°C and became higher than that of iPP/3988 when Tf decreased to 179°C and lower, which can be used to explain the influence of ordered structure and α/β‐CNA on iPP crystallization. Using this method, the selection of α‐NA for α/β‐CNA can be greatly expanded even if the inherent NE of β‐NA is lower than that of the α‐NA. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The effect of phenyl‐terminated hyperbranched polyester (HBP‐Bz) with different generation (the first generation and the fourth generation) as a special β‐nucleating agent on the toughness of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated by dynamic rheological measurements, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy, and mechanical properties measurements. The results show that the β nucleating activity of HBP‐Bz significantly depends on its concentration and molecular structure. The relative content of β‐crystal form (Kβ) increases with the increasing HBP‐Bz percentage reaches a maximum and then decreases as HBP‐Bz percentage further increases. The Kβ values of iPP/HBP‐G1‐1% and iPP/HBP‐G4‐1% blends are 26.52% and 20.80%, respectively. When compared with HBP‐G4, HBP‐G1 has incompact molecular structure, facilitating the π–π interaction between phenyl‐terminated groups and the helix chains of iPP crystallize on it, and therefore relatively good dispersibility, high β nucleating activity and excellent toughening effect are obtained. The impact strength of iPP was dramatically improved, especially with addition of 1 wt% HBP‐G1. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 59:E133–E143, 2019. © 2018 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP) foams with double crystal melting peak structure were prepared using supercritical CO2 as blowing agent. Such structure was induced by the β‐nucleating agent (NA) and dissolved CO2 in a lab‐scale autoclave system. From the dynamic rheological behaviors, one can see that long chain branching polypropylene (LCBPP) possess better melt elasticity than linear polypropylene (LPP). In order to improve the foamability, LPP was blended with LCBPP. The results of differential scanning calorimeter and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction indicated that NA was helpful for the introduction of β‐crystal in LPP, but not for LCBPP and PP blends. Therefore, the foamability and the content of β‐crystal of various PP foams can be effectively controlled by adjusting the ratio of LPP and LCBPP. Meanwhile, both the cooling rate and the content of NA affected the formation of β‐crystal in various PP samples. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46007.  相似文献

β‐Polypropylene composites containing calcium carbonate treated by titanate coupling agent (T‐CaCO3) and maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP‐g‐MAH) were prepared by melt compounding. The crystallization, morphology and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical tests. It is found that both T‐CaCO3 and NT‐C are able to induce the formation of β‐phase, and NT‐C greatly increases the β content and decreases the spherulitic size of PP. PP‐g‐MAH facilitates the formation of β‐form PP and improves the compatibility between T‐CaCO3 and PP. Izod notched impact strength of β‐PP/T‐CaCO3 composite is higher than that of PP/T‐CaCO3 composite, indicating the synergistic toughening effect of T‐CaCO3 and β‐PP. Incorporation of PP‐g‐MAH into β‐PP/T‐CaCO3 composite further increases the content of β‐crystal PP and improves the impact strength and tensile strength when T‐CaCO3 concentration is below 5 wt%. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of β‐PP composites is well described by Jeziorny's and Mo's methods. It is found that NT‐C and T‐CaCO3 accelerate the crystallization rate of PP but the influence of PP‐g‐MAH on crystallization rate of β‐PP composite is marginal. POLYM. β‐Nitroalcohols (βNAs) are promising corneoscleral crosslinking agents for the treatment of diseases such as keratoconus and myopia. Although it is believed that formaldehyde is released from the crosslinking reactions of βNAs, the mechanism by which βNAs react with amine‐functionalized polymers has yet to be known. In this study, we present the reaction mechanism of the βNA crosslinking. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data provide strong evidence that formaldehyde is released during the reaction. Catalytic studies show that sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and salmon testes DNA accelerate the reaction while hydroxynitrile lyase from Arabidopsis thaliana decelerates the crosslinking reaction. These results suggest that βNAs are potential self‐administered crosslinking agents for future clinical use. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

In this article, three kinds of surface‐modified methods were used to treat β‐Si3N4 whiskers before being incorporated into Bis‐GMA/TEGDMA dental resin matrix in order to improve the whiskers' reinforcing effect. The experimental results showed that composites with directly heat‐treated and then silanized β‐Si3N4 whiskers had the best reinforcing effect. They had flexural strength of 160 ± 7.0 MPa (mean ± SD; n = 6), compressive strength of 371 ± 1.4 MPa (mean ± SD; n = 5) and HRA of 48.4 ± 0.5(mean ± SD; n = 5), respectively. In addition, water sorption and solubility test demonstrated that the composites were reliable to use as the dental restoration materials. Therefore, the directly heat‐treated and then silanized β‐Si3N4 whiskers (better than β‐Si3N4 whiskers mixed with SiO2 nanoparticles or SiO2 sols) were most suitable fillers to reinforce dental resin composites. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Investigation of microstructure and properties is critical for the development and application of polymer materials. Polypropylene random copolymer (PPR) and β‐nucleated PPR are widely used in water pipe production. The effect of melt shear flow on the crystalline structure and mechanical properties of PPR containing β‐nucleating agent needs in‐depth understanding. In this paper, we demonstrated the preparation of PPR and PPR containing 0.1 wt% calcium pimelate (Ca‐Pim) samples by conventional injection molding (CIM) and oscillation shear injection molding (OSIM). The multilayer structures and morphologies of the samples were characterized by SEM, two‐dimensional X‐ray scattering and DSC. The mechanical properties and the microstructures of samples prepared by these two injection molding methods were compared. Compared with samples prepared by CIM, the stronger shear provided by OSIM induced the formation of a thicker layer of a shish‐kebab structure and a higher content of γ crystals, and dramatically suppressed the β‐nucleating effect of Ca‐Pim. The OSIM samples have more shish‐kebab structures and higher crystallinities than CIM samples and therefore the former exhibit better rigidity than the latter. The β crystals in the core layer and the thicker layer of shish‐kebab structure endow OSIM‐PPR/0.1 wt% Ca‐Pim with excellent impact toughness. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The nucleating ability of p‐cyclohexylamide carboxybenzene (β‐NA) towards isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. β‐NA is identified to have dual nucleating ability for α‐iPP and β‐iPP under appropriate kinetic conditions. The formation of β‐iPP is dependent on the content of β‐NA. The content of β‐phase can reach as high as 96.96% with the addition of only 0.05 wt% β‐NA. Under non‐isothermal crystallization the content of β‐iPP increases with increasing cooling rate. The maximum β‐crystal content is obtained at a cooling rate of 40 °C min–1. The supermolecular structure of the β‐iPP is identified as a leaf‐like transcrystalline structure with an ordered lamellae arrangement perpendicular to the special surface of β‐NA. Under isothermal crystallization β‐crystals can be formed in the temperature range 80–140 °C. The content of β‐crystals reaches its maximum value at a crystallization temperature of 130 °C. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: It is a challenge for polymer processing to promote the formation of γ‐phase under atmospheric conditions in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) copolymer containing chain errors. Incorporation of an α‐nucleator in iPP copolymer seems reasonable since it can enhance non‐isothermal crystallization. Up to now, however, the issue regarding a β‐nucleated iPP copolymer still remains unclear, which is the subject of this study. RESULTS: The results indicate that the γ‐phase indeed occurs in a β‐nucleated random iPP copolymer with ethylene co‐unit (PPR) sample and becomes predominant at slow cooling rates (e.g. 1 °C min?1) where the formation of the β‐form is suppressed to a large extent. With detailed morphological observations the formation of γ‐phase in the β‐nucleated PPR sample at slow cooling rate is unambiguously attributed to the nucleating duality of the β‐nucleator towards α‐ and β‐polymorphs. The α‐crystals, induced by the β‐nucleator, serve as seeds for the predominant growth of the γ‐phase. Moreover, the presence of the β‐nucleator, acting as heterogeneous nuclei, promotes the formation of γ‐phase in the nucleated PPR sample, at least to some extent. CONCLUSION: The findings in this study extend our insights into the formation of γ‐phase in β‐nucleated iPP copolymer and, most importantly, provide an alternative route to obtain iPP rich in γ‐phase. In this study, the crystallization behavior of the β‐isotactic polypropylene (β‐iPP) samples nucleated by a rare earth based β‐nucleating agent (β‐NA) WBG‐II and a metal salts compound β‐NA NAB83 (denoted as WPP and NPP, respectively) under different cooling conditions were comparatively investigated. The thermal conditions such as the cooling rate, isothermal crystallization temperature, isothermal crystallization time, and the subsequent cooling to room temperature. The results of WAXD, SEM, and nonisothermal crystallization reveal that under the same processing conditions, the crystallite size of NPP is smaller, which arrange more compactly as compared with WPP. Meanwhile, NPP has shorter crystallization rate and higher β‐nucleation selectivity, but WPP can crystallization at wider temperature range. The results of isothermal crystallization showed that NPP has higher selectivity and higher β‐nucleation efficiency, which favors the formation of high proportion of β‐phase at the isothermal crystallization temperature of 110–130°C with and without subsequent cooling; WPP has lower selectivity, which can only induce high content of β‐phase under isothermal crystallization without subsequent cooling to 25°C. In tuning the crystallization behavior and the properties of β‐PP, the joint influence of the efficiency and selectivity of the β‐NA, and the thermal conditions should be taken into consideration. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
