Review of the mechanical properties of carbon nanofiber/polymer composites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, the mechanical properties of vapor grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF)/polymer composites are reviewed. The paper starts with the structural and intrinsic mechanical properties of VGCNFs. Then the major factors (filler dispersion and distribution, filler aspect ratio, adhesion and interface between filler and polymer matrix) affecting the mechanical properties of VGCNF/polymer composites are presented. After that, VGCNF/polymer composite mechanical properties are discussed in terms of nanofibers dispersion and alignment, adhesion between the nanofiber and polymer matrix, and other factors. The influence of processing methods and processing conditions on the properties of VGCNF/polymer composite is also considered. At the end, the possible future challenges for VGCNF and VGCNF/polymer composites are highlighted.  相似文献

Here we report the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and thermally reduced graphene (TRG) on the miscibility, morphology and final properties of nanostructured epoxy resin with an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer. The addition of nanoparticles did not have any influence on the miscibility of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymer in the resin. However, MWCNTs and TRG reduced the degree of crystallinity of the PEO-rich microphases in the blends above 10 wt.% of copolymer while they did not change the phase morphology at the nanoscale, where PPO spherical domains of 20–30 nm were found in all the samples studied. A synergic effect between the self-assembled nanostructure and the nanoparticles on the toughness of the cured resin was observed. In addition, the nanoparticles minimized the negative effect of the copolymer on the elastic modulus and glass transition temperature in the resin.  相似文献

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated by using ultrasonication and the cast molding method. In this process, MWCNTs modified by mixed acids were well dispersed and highly loaded in an epoxy matrix. The effects of MWCNTs addition and surface modification on the mechanical performances and fracture morphologies of composites were investigated. It was found that the tensile strength improved with the increase of MWCNTs addition, and when the content of MWCNTs loading reached 8 wt.%, the tensile strength reached the highest value of 69.7 MPa. In addition, the fracture strain also enhanced distinctly, implying that MWCNTs loading not only elevated the tensile strength of the epoxy matrix, but also increased the fracture toughness. Nevertheless, the elastic modulus reduced with the increase of MWCNTs loading. The reasons for the mechanical property changes are discussed.  相似文献

In this work, effect of ZnO nanoparticles doped graphene (Nano-ZnO–GE) on static and dynamic mechanical properties of natural rubber composites were studied. Nano-ZnO–GE was synthesized by sol–gel method and thermal treatment. With the incorporation of nano-ZnO–GE into the matrix, the mechanical properties of NR nanocomposite significantly improved over that of NR composite containing with 5 phr of conventional-ZnO. The results demonstrated that the presence of nano-ZnO on the surface of graphene sheets not only conduces to suppressing aggregation of graphene sheets but also acts as a more efficient cure-activator in vulcanization process, with the formation of excellent crosslinked network at low nano-ZnO–GE content. This work also showed that NR/Nano-ZnO–GE nanocomposites exhibited higher wet grip property and lower rolling resistance compared with NR/Conventional-ZnO composite, which makes nano-ZnO–GE very competitive for the green tire application as a substitute of conventional-ZnO, enlarging versatile practical application to prepare high-performance rubber nanocomposites.  相似文献

The thermal, mechanical and ablation properties of carbon fibre/phenolic composites filled with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated. Carbon fibre/phenolic/MWCNTs were prepared using different weight percentage of MWCNTs by compression moulding. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), flexural tests, thermal gravimetric analysis and oxyacetylene torch tests. The thermal stability and flexural properties of the nanocomposites increased by increasing MWCNTs content (wt% ⩽1), but they decreased when the content of MWCNTs was 2 wt%. The linear and mass ablation rates of the nanocomposites after modified with 1 wt% MWCNTs decreased by about 80% and 52%, respectively. To investigate the material post-test microstructure, a morphological characterization was carried out using SEM. It was shown that the presence of MWCNTs in the composite led to the formation of a strong network char layer without any cracks or opening.  相似文献

The main goals of this work were to study the effect of different chemical treatments on sisal fiber bundles tensile properties as well as on tensile properties of composites based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix and sisal fibers. For this purpose, sisal fibers were treated with different chemical treatments. After treating sisal fibers the tensile strength values decreased respect to untreated fiber ones, especially when the combination of NaOH + silane treatment was used. Taking into account fiber tensile properties and fiber/PLA adhesion values, composites based on silane treated fibers would show the highest tensile strength value. However, composites based on alkali treated and NaOH + silane treated fibers showed the highest tensile strength values. Finally, experimental tensile strength values of composites were compared with those values obtained using micromechanical models.  相似文献

The microstructure, mechanical strength, dielectric properties, Doppler broadening measurements and positron life time studies of the composites containing multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and natural rubber (NR) are investigated. The uniform distribution of MWCNTs in the elastomer medium is studied by Raman spectroscopy and the electron microscopy images show the composite’s internal microstructure. Free volume sizes and interstitial mesopore sizes of the nanocomposites are determined by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). PALS investigates the influence of the nanotubes in regulating the interphase nanoscale character. Strong interfacial interaction causes an apparent reduction of the free-volume fraction of NR probably by depressing the formation of free-volume holes in the interfacial region. The mechanical percolation and percolation observed from the dielectric measurements are correlated with the life time values. It is established that the sub-nano level free volumes and nano level structure of the composites have significant roles in regulating the mechanical properties.  相似文献

In this study the effect of moisture absorption on the mechanical properties of glass-reinforced polyester composites is evaluated using both destructive and nondestructive tests. The composite resins were produced with two different production processes, while the mechanical properties of the composite materials were measured using DMA destruction tests. According to the DMA tests, the dependency in terms of temperature for the real component of the complex elastic modulus (E′), the imaginary component of the complex elastic modulus (E″), as well as tan(δ) can be traced. For a more efficient use of the composite materials, the compliance tensor was obtained with nondestructive tests based on ultrasound. A method for the generation and reception of Lamb waves in plates of composite materials is described, based on using air-coupling, low-frequency, ultrasound transducers in a pitch–catch configuration. The results of the nondestructive measurements made in this study are in good agreement with those obtained when using the DMA destructive tests.  相似文献

In this research, the effects of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on thermo-elastic properties of carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy composite for the reduction of thermal residual stresses (TRS) using micromechanical relations were studied. In the first step, micromechanical models to calculate the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and Young's modulus of CNF/epoxy and CNF/CF/epoxy nanocomposites were developed and compared with experimental results of the other researchers. The obtained results of the CTE and Young's modulus of modified Schapery and Halpin-Tsai theories have good agreement with the experimental results. In the second step, the classical lamination theory (CLT) was employed to determine the TRS for CNF/CF/epoxy laminated nanocomposites. Also, the theoretical results of the CLT were compared with experimental results. Finally, reduction of the TRS using the CLT for different lay-ups such as cross ply, angle ply, and quasi-isotropic laminates were obtained. The results demonstrated that the addition of 1% weight fraction of CNF can reduce the TRS that the most reduction occurred in the unsymmetric cross-ply laminate by up to 27%.  相似文献

Both silane and multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grafted successfully onto carbon fibers (CFs) to enhance the interfacial strength of CFs reinforced methylphenylsilicone resin (MPSR) composites. The microstructure, interfacial properties, impact toughness and heat resistance of CFs before and after modification were investigated. Experimental results revealed that CNTs were grafted uniformly onto CFs using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) as the bridging agent. The wettability and surface energy of the obtained hybrid fiber (CF-APS-CNT) were increased obviously in comparison with those of the untreated-CF. The CF-APS-CNT composites showed simultaneously remarkable enhancement in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and impact toughness. Moreover, the interfacial reinforcing and toughening mechanisms were also discussed. In addition, Thermogravimetric analysis and thermal oxygen aging experiments indicated a remarkable improvement in the thermal stability and heat oxidation resistance of composites by the introduction of APS and CNTs. We believe the facile and effective method may provide a novel interface design strategy for developing multifunctional fibers.  相似文献

The paper reports the results of a project aiming to obtain multifunctional binary and ternary polymer nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical and anti-microbial properties. To this end a DGEBA-based epoxy resin is loaded using montmorillonite clays and later used as matrix for glass fibre reinforced laminates. Both binary and ternary nanomodified specimens are manufactured and subjected to mechanical testing. An accurate analysis of the effect of nanomodification on the biological activity is carried out as well.  相似文献

Octaglycidyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (gly-POSS) was successfully grafted on carbon fibers (CFs) surface to enhance interfacial properties and impact toughness of CFs reinforced methylphenylsilicone resin (MPSR) composites. After gly-POSS modification, POSS grafted CF (CF-POSS) with many epoxy functional groups was modified with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) to further enhance the interfacial strength. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed that POSS and TEPA were grafted onto CFs surface uniformly and the surface roughness enhanced obviously. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the chemical bonding nature between CFs and POSS, as well as between POSS and TEPA. POSS and TEPA modification could increase the fiber polarity, wettability and surface energy significantly. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and impact toughness of composites showed a dramatic improvement, especially for grafting with POSS and further with TEPA (CF-POSS-TEPA). Additionally, the reinforcing and toughening mechanisms were also analyzed. Meanwhile, single fiber tensile strength (TS) had no decrease after modification.  相似文献

The mechanical and electrical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) composites prepared by melt-extrusion have been evaluated. The wrapping of SWCNTs in polyetherimide (PEI) and the addition of inorganic fullerene-like tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) nanoparticles provided an effective method for dispersing the SWCNTs, leading to enhanced properties of the resulting hybrid composites. Mechanical tests demonstrated significant enhancements in stiffness, strength and toughness by the addition of both nanofillers, and the Young’s modulus of the hybrid composites was fairly well predicted by two-phase modelling. The electrical conductivity of PPS improved dramatically at low SWCNT content (0.1-0.5 wt%). At higher concentrations, the replacement of part of the SWCNTs with IF-WS2 maintained the level of conductivity of the composites. Overall, the hybrids possess superior performance than composites reinforced solely with wrapped or non-wrapped SWCNTs, and their properties can be tailored by modifying the SWCNT/IF-WS2 ratio.  相似文献

Many attempts have been made to fabricate lightweight, high-performance, and low-cost polymeric composites. To improve the mechanical performance of the same material compared to conventional composites, paired hybrid materials were manufactured with different lamination structures. Each of six types of hybrid composite was designed by lamination pairing of carbon/aramid fabric and carbon/glass fabric using VARTM. The dependence of the mechanical properties of the samples on the pairing effects of the lamination structures was investigated. All pairing materials did not lead to a large increase of tensile strength due to the domination of carbon fiber, but the mechanical properties of specific laminates were clearly changed by the particular pairing sequence used. Using the limited material, the design of an effective structure was the central laminating condition with a good tensile and bending properties. Laminating position of the carbon fiber was found to play an important role in the stacking design of hybrid composites.  相似文献

A small quantity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were introduced into the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/GNP and PVDF/CNT composites, respectively, to prepare the corresponding ternary PVDF/CNT/GNP and PVDF/GNP/CNT composites. The results demonstrated that adding CNTs into the PVDF/GNP composites greatly promoted the formation of the hybrid network structure of fillers. This was much different from the scenario that adding GNPs into the PVDF/CNT composites. GNPs and CNTs exhibited excellent nucleation effects for the crystallization of PVDF matrix; however, the variation of the PVDF crystallinity was small. Adding CNTs into the PVDF/GNP composites greatly enhanced the electrical conductivity of the PVDF/CNT/GNP composites. This was also different from the scenario of the PVDF/GNP/CNT composites. Furthermore, the PVDF/CNT/GNP composites exhibit higher thermal conductivity and higher synergistic efficiency compared with the PVDF/GNP/CNT composites. The conductive mechanisms and the synergistic effects of the ternary composites were then analyzed.  相似文献

This paper studies the electrical and mechanical responses of cracked carbon nanotube (CNT)-based polymer composites. Tensile tests were performed on single-edge cracked plate specimens of the nanocomposites at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K), and the electrical resistance change of the specimens was monitored. An analytical model based on the electrical conduction mechanism of CNT-based composites was also developed to predict the resistance change resulted from crack propagation. The crack induced resistance change was calculated, and a comparison of the analytical predictions against the experimental data was made to validate the applicability of the model. In addition, the fracture properties of the nanocomposites were assessed in terms of the J-integrals using an elastic-plastic finite element analysis.  相似文献

The chemically stitched graphene oxide (GO) sheets were obtained using a click chemistry reaction between azide-functionalized GO and alkyne-functionalized GO. The click coupled GO (GO-click-GO) sheets showed the largely increased electrical conductivity and near infrared laser-induced photothermal properties compared to the GO sheets, which result from formation of triazole ring as a bridging linker between the GO sheets. The polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites incorporating the GO-click-GO sheets exhibited enhanced mechanical properties of breaking stress and modulus than the GO/PU nanocomposites. The modulus of GO-click-GO/PU nanocomposites was higher than that of the GO/PU nanocomposites at the same filler loading of 0.1 and 0.5 wt%. The GO-click-GO/PU nanocomposites also showed a significantly improved photothermal properties compared to the GO/PU nanocomposites at the same filler loading. The click coupled stitched GO sheets in this study can be used as the superior reinforcing fillers for mechanically and photothermally high performance polymer nanocomposites.  相似文献

Bio-composites with poly(lactic) acid as matrix and various algae (red, brown and green) as filler were prepared via melt mixing. Algae initial size (below 50 μm and between 200 and 400 μm) and concentration (from 2 to 40 wt%) were varied. First, algae morphology, composition and surface properties are analysed for each algae type. Second, an example of algae particle size decrease during processing is given. Finally, tensile properties of composites are analysed. The surface of algae flakes was covered with inorganic salts affecting filler–matrix interactions. The Young’s modulus of composites increased at 40 wt% load of algae as compared with neat PLA although the strain at break and tensile strength decreased. In most cases the influence of algae type was minor. Larger flakes led to better mechanical properties compared to the smaller ones.  相似文献

Graphene oxide (GO) was added to a polymer composites system consisting of surfactant-wrapped/doped polyaniline (PANI) and divinylbenzene (DVB). The nanocomposites were fabricated by a simple blending, ultrasonic dispersion and curing process. The new composites show higher conductivity (0.02–9.8 S/cm) than the other reported polymer system filled with PANI (10−9–10−1 S/cm). With only 0.45 wt% loading of GO, at least 29% enhancement in electric conductivity and 29.8% increase in bending modulus of the composites were gained. Besides, thermal stability of the composites was also improved. UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that addition of GO improves the dispersion of PANI in the polymer composite, which is the key to realize high conductivity.  相似文献
