Microsatellites for global electronic mail networks

Continuing advances in semiconductor memory and microprocessor technology have made possible a class of small, relatively inexpensive, yet electronically sophisticated satellites, referred to as `microsatellites'. In July 1991, Arianespace launched the fifth microsatellite in the University of Surrey's pioneering `UoSAT' series. UoSAT-5 carries a store-and-forward communication payload equipped with a microcomputer, packet-radio interfaces and a 13 Mbyte solid-state storage system, which will provide error-free digital communications to small ground terminals throughout the world. The paper describes the store-and-forward message-switching system and discusses the important considerations encountered when designing advanced computer systems for microsatellites

A smart boring tool for process control

A mechatronic metal cutting tool has been developed to improve the accuracy and flexibility of line boring machining in the automotive industry. Laser position sensors and piezoelectric actuator were integrated into the rotating body of the boring tool. To compensate the boring bar droop and effects of cutting forces, a fast tool servo utilizing feedback control of the boring tool insert position was designed and embedded in the rotating tool assembly. In addition to position control, a self-monitoring algorithm that utilizes disturbance estimator has been put together in the controller. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed cutting process controller improves the accuracy of the boring tool as well as reliably detects the process failures, such as tool tip breakage, without additional monitoring equipment.

安全电子邮件相关技术的研究

随着Ｅ－ｍａｉｌ在Ｉｎｔｅｒｎｅｔ上的广泛应用，其安全性越来越受到关注。电子邮件的安全问题，主要可以分为两个方面，即邮件内容的安全（Ｍｅｓｓａｇｅ Ｓｅｃｕｒｉｔｙ）和邮件传输的安全（ＴｒａｎｓｍｉｓｓｉｏｎＳｅｃｕｒｉｔｙ）。从这两个方面着手，研究电子邮件安全体系的相关技术，并对它作分析比较，最后结合实验结果，给出了一个可行的安金电子邮件系统的设计框架。
