A fatigue damage model to assess the development of subsurface fatigue cracks in railway wheels is presented in this paper. A 3‐dimensional finite element model (FEM) is constructed to simulate repeated cycles of contact loading between a railway wheel and a rail. The computational approach includes a hard‐contact over‐closure relationship and an elastoplastic material model with isotropic and kinematic hardening. Results from the simulation are used in a multiaxial critical‐plane fatigue damage analysis. The employed strain‐based critical‐plane fatigue damage approach is based on Fatemi‐Socie fatigue index that takes into account the non‐proportional and out‐of‐phase nature of the multiaxial state of stress occurs when a railway wheel rolls on a rail. It predicts fatigue‐induced micro‐crack nucleation at a depth of about 3.7 mm beneath the wheel tread, as well as the crack plane growth orientation which indicates the possible failure pattern. Additionally, the influence of various factors such as contribution of normal stresses, higher wheel load, and material model have been investigated.  相似文献

DH36 steel is a widely used material in marine engineering. The fatigue crack propagation rates of DH36 steel at low temperatures have a crucial influence on the fatigue strength of structures operating in polar environments. The objective of this paper is to investigate the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of DH36 steel at low temperatures (?60°C to 20°C) by carrying out tensile tests and fatigue crack propagation tests of DH36 steel, in order to obtain the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of DH36 steel. The influence of the elastic modulus on the crack length measured by the compliance method is considered. On the basis of the Paris law, the crack propagation rate at different temperatures is investigated. The results and the observed failure modes indicated that fatigue ductile‐to‐brittle transition (FDBT) occurred as the temperature was lowered.  相似文献

Steel bridges fabricated with Q345qD steels face critical challenges when operating in cold regions with a low ambient temperature. This study aims to investigate, via an experimental program, the low‐temperature fatigue crack propagation behavior of Q345qD bridge steel base material and its butt welds. The testing program comprises a series of Charpy impact tests and fatigue crack propagation tests at the room temperature, ?20°C and ?60°C. The experimental results demonstrate a reduced crack propagation rate in the base material, but an increasing crack propagation rate in the butt welds, with a decreasing ambient temperature. The base material also shows enhanced fatigue crack propagation thresholds with the decreasing temperature. The ductile‐to‐brittle transition temperature for fatigue is lower than that for fracture in the base material while the weld metal exhibits an opposite trend. Generally, the butt welds present higher resistance against fatigue crack propagation and larger Charpy toughness values than do the base material at all tested temperatures. The Paris‐law parameters measured at the room temperature for the base material leads to a conservative assessment of the crack propagation life for a welded joint under a low ambient temperature.  相似文献

A cumulative fatigue damage model is presented to estimate fatigue life for high‐strength steels in high‐cycle and very‐high‐cycle fatigue regimes with fish‐eye mode failure, and a simple formula is obtained. The model takes into account the inclusion size, fine granular area (FGA) size, and tensile strength of materials. Then, the ‘equivalent crack growth rate’ of FGA is proposed. The model is used to estimate the fatigue life and equivalent crack growth rate for a bearing steel (GCr15) of present investigation and four high‐strength steels in the literature. The equivalent crack growth rate of FGA is calculated to be of the order of magnitude of 10?14–10?11 m/cycle. The estimated results accord well with the present experimental results and prior predictions and experimental results in the literature. Moreover, the effect of inclusion size on fatigue life is discussed. It is indicated that the inclusion size has an important influence on the fatigue life, and the effect is related to the relative size of inclusion for FGA. For the inclusion size close to the FGA size, the former has a substantial effect on the fatigue life. While for the relatively large value of FGA size to inclusion size, it has little effect on the fatigue life.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth behaviours of the titanium alloy Ti‐6Al‐4V, with two different microstructures, at different maximum stresses were identified by digital image correlation technique. Full‐field strains were monitored around fatigue cracks after consecutive cycles in fatigue crack growth experiments. Results indicated that the Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy with a bi‐modal microstructure had a better fatigue resistance than that with a primary‐α microstructure. Typical behaviours of small cracks and the evolution of multi‐scale fatigue cracks were clarified. The strain accumulations around the micro‐notch and fatigue crack increased with increasing number of load cycles. On the basis of von Mises strain mapping, it was found that crack growth rate could be characterized by crack‐tip plastic zone size.  相似文献

The fatigue crack propagation in a friction stir‐welded sample has been simulated herein by means of two 3‐dimensional finite element method (FEM)‐based analyses. Numerical simulations of the fatigue crack propagation have been carried out by assuming a residual stress field as a starting condition. Two initial cracks, observed in the real specimen, have been assessed experimentally by performing fatigue tests on the welded sample. Hence, the same cracks have been placed in the corresponding FE model, and then a remote load with boundary conditions has been applied on the welded specimen. The material behaviour of the welded joint has been modelled by means of the Ramberg‐Osgood equation, while the non‐linear Kujawski‐Ellyin (KE) model has been adopted for the fatigue crack propagation under small‐scale yielding (SSY) conditions. Owing to the compressive nature of the residual stress field that acts on a part of the cracked regions, the crack closure phenomenon has also been considered. Then, the original version of the KE law has been modified to fully include the closure effect in the analysis. Later, the crack closure effect has also been assessed in the simulation of fatigue propagation of three cracks. Finally, an investigation of the fracture process zone (FPZ) extension as well as the cyclic plastic zone (CPZ) and monotonic plastic zone (MPZ) extensions have been assessed.  相似文献

Phase‐field‐crystal method is applied to study deformation behavior in the ductile‐to‐brittle transition region of the nanoscale monocrack system in this work. The influence of temperature, crystal orientation angle, and crack shape on the deformation behavior is investigated. Temperature can induce fracture mode change, while crystal orientation angle and crack shape can only affect the specific evolutionary behavior. In the ductile region, if the orientation of a vertex is approximately aligned with a certain close‐packed direction, crack extends shortly in cleavage mode at this vertex, which means cleavage crack propagation can be promoted in a particular range of crystal orientation angle. Additionally, the influence of crack shape is achieved by varying the orientation relationship between crack and lattice structure. In the brittle region, crystal orientation angle impacts on the specific cleavage evolution process, and crack shape can promote or hinder plastic deformation by affecting stress concentration.  相似文献

Fatigue thresholds and slow crack growth rates have been measured in a powder formed nickel-base superalloy from room temperature to 600°C. Two grain sizes were investigated: 5–12 μm and 50 μm. It is shown that the threshold increases with grain size, and the difference is most pronounced at room temperature. Although crack growth rates increase with temperature in both microstructures, the threshold is only temperature dependent in the material with the larger grain size. It is also only in the latter that the room temperature threshold falls when the load ratio is increased from 0.1 to 0.5. At 600°C the higher load ratio causes a 20% reduction in the threshold irrespective of grain size. The results are discussed in terms of surface roughness and oxide-induced crack closure, the former being critically related to the type of crystallographic crack growth, which is in turn shown to be both temperature and stress intensity dependent.  相似文献

The small punch test (SPT) consists in punching very small square specimens, measuring 10 × 10 mm2 and 0.5‐mm thickness, until fracture using a 2.5‐mm‐diameter hemispherical punch. Different specimens of a structural steel were tested from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures in order to determine its ductile‐to‐brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The DBTT obtained in SPT (DBTTSTP) is much lower than the DBTT obtained by means of Charpy specimens (DBTTCVN). The variation of the mechanical parameters calculated from the SPTs with temperature was also calculated and the operative fracture micromechanisms defined using a scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

T‐welded joints are commonly employed in ship and ocean structures. The fatigue failure of structure components subjected to cyclic loading always occurs in T‐welded joints because of the metallurgical differences, tensile residual stress fields and stress concentrations. The former researches about T‐welded joints fatigue have in common that the boundary condition needs to be taken into account as an influencing parameter to predict the crack propagation during cyclic loading. In this paper, the crack growth behaviour in T‐welded joint processed with Q345D steel (Pingxiang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, Hukou, Jiangxi Province in China) under the fatigue loading was analysed via analytical model and verified via experiment. The results show that the influence of boundary condition should be considered in T‐welded joint structure during crack propagation in weld toe area. The correction factor concerning the effect of boundary condition and modified Paris' equation was proposed according to the experimental results and verified by the following repeated experiments.  相似文献

Simulation of the fatigue crack propagation in a Wendelstein 7‐X baffle module is performed in this study using both a finite element method‐based software and the UniGrow nonlinear model for small‐scale yielding (SSY) conditions. Some experimental fatigue tests of several cracked baffle modules have been performed through a servo‐hydraulic machine. One of these experimental tests has been considered to simulate fatigue crack propagation in the baffle module. Before starting the experimental test, a first crack partly contained in the welding seam and partly in the steel pipe is found. Subsequently, owing to the applied load, the crack propagated both into the welding seam and into the steel pipe until the plastic zone in the near field attains SSY conditions. Finally, owing to the increase in the extension of the plastic zone, SSY conditions are not more valid, and the breakage of the steel pipe is produced by plastic collapse.  相似文献

When high‐strength steels are subjected to very high‐cycle fatigue loading, crack initiation site shifts from surfaces to the interior, and a fish‐eye forms on the fracture surface. Majority of the fatigue life is estimated to be associated with the formation of this internal crack morphology. In the present work, features of such internal cracks in two high‐strength steels are studied. Specifically, three initiation patterns are investigated. A general internal crack initiating scenario is proposed base on an understanding of dislocation slip in the materials. A simplified threshold is calculated from Young's modulus and interatomic spacing, defining the transition from the initiation stage to the crack propagation. The relationship between internal crack initiation and slower descending S‐N curves is discussed.  相似文献

The S‐N data up to very‐high‐cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime for a high‐strength steel were obtained by fatigue tests under constant amplitude and variable amplitude (VA) via rotating bending and electromagnetic resonance cycling. Crack initiation for VHCF was from the interior of specimens, and the initiation region was carefully examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Crack growth traces in the initiation region of fine‐granular‐area (FGA) were the first time captured for the specimens under VA cycling by rotating bending. The obtained crack growth rates in FGA were upwards to connect well with those in fish‐eye region available in the literature and were associated well with the calculated equivalent crack growth rates in FGA. The observations of profile samples revealed that FGA is a nanograin layer for the specimens under VA cycling, which is a new evidence to support the previously proposed “numerous cyclic pressing” model.  相似文献

This paper examines the overloading effect on the fatigue crack propagations monitored in a large‐scale tubular X‐joint specimen under two separate cyclic tests. The first cyclic test applies a constant‐amplitude brace in‐plane bending to the joint, with a single cycle of 150% overload before the crack depth reaches the mid‐thickness of the chord. The second fatigue test applies two batches of cyclic loads, with the amplitude of the second batch at 66% of the former. The X‐joint specimen experiences a 150% overload cycle during the first batch of loading, followed by the second batch after it has recovered from the overload effect. The experimental results reveal that deep surface cracks experience more significant overload retardation than does a shallow fatigue crack. The Paris law estimation indicates that the single overload cycle applied in the first specimen leads to a 7% increase in the fatigue life of the X‐joint.  相似文献

Some of the fatigue tests performed using the standard compact tension (CT) and a non‐standard specimen made of rolled 7075 aluminium alloy exhibit fatigue crack growth (FCG) lagging in a small region along the crack front. Through‐thickness microstructural evaluation shows that material grains in this region did not flatten as much as other regions. In the non‐standard specimen, surface cracks are either grown under fatigue loading or broken under monotonically increasing quasi‐static loads at different crack sizes. The aforementioned lagging also exists in a narrow region of 3‐D FCG for specimens with microstructural through‐thickness non‐uniformity. A more important feature for this type of specimen with surface crack is the deflection of fast fracture direction into the grain interfaces, namely from L‐T orientation to S‐L and S‐T directions. It is proved that this is due to significant levels of second principal stresses near the free surface for small cracks and lower fracture toughness of the material in S‐L and S‐T directions.  相似文献

In the present work, an attempt has been made to study the fatigue crack growth in a part‐through circumferentially notched pipe specimen. It has been observed that under four‐point bend cyclic load, the crack propagates in a transverse plane in the radial direction initially followed by propagation in the circumferential direction. The crack extension in the circumferential direction resulted crack growth retardation in the radial direction. This behaviour of the fatigue crack growth has been modelled, and a fatigue life prediction methodology based on an exponential model has been applied for prediction of fatigue crack growth.  相似文献

The viability of single edge cracked sheet test method for rapidly determining the crack propagation characteristics of steel wires was investigated. First, fatigue tests under 3 different stress ratios were conducted on the sheet specimens which were manufactured from a kind of widely used cable wires. The test data were analysed, and the crack growth rates of sheet specimens were constructed by Walker model. Then, a series of fatigue tests were performed on notched round‐bar specimens to verify the predictability of Walker model parameters. Moreover, the experimental results obtained in different studies on crack propagation characteristics of steel wires were discussed. The results show that the crack propagation characteristics of sheet specimens behave a certain dependence on depth. The sheet crack growth laws can be well used to predict the fatigue life of notched bar specimens when the mechanical heterogeneity is considered. For bridge cable steels, the rational values for the exponent parameter of Paris law, m, should be close to 3.  相似文献

The fretting fatigue crack formation and propagation behaviors of Ni‐based single‐crystal (NBSX) superalloys are investigated in this paper. Subsurface crack formation process is revealed by in situ fretting fatigue experiment. The crack is observed to form on subsurface area, then propagates to the contact surface. Inclusions in materials are found to have obvious effects on crack propagation, and slip lines are closely related to the crack propagation direction. Crystal plastic finite element method (CPFEM) simulation is used to simulate crack formation position. The accumulative plastic strain peaks at the edge of contact zone and the subsurface area. The results show that the CPFEM simulation and in situ observation achieve good agreements.  相似文献

In this paper, the growth of long fatigue cracks up to failure in aircraft components is studied. A deterministic model is presented, able to simulate the growth of fatigue through cracks located at rivet holes in lap‐joint panels. It also includes criteria to assess the link‐up of collinear adjacent cracks in a MSD scenario. To validate the model, a fatigue test campaign was carried out on riveted lap‐joint specimens in order to produce experimental crack growth and link‐up data. Accurate measurements of naturally occurred surface cracks were automatically performed by the Image Analysis technique, thus allowing the tests to run 24 h a day. The comparison between experimental tests and numerical simulations is good, thus confirming the model as a useful tool for the assessment of fatigue life of aircraft riveted joints.  相似文献

The present work studies a self‐similar high‐speed expanding crack of mode‐I in a ductile material with a modified cohesive zone model. Compared with existing Dugdale models for moving crack, the new features of the present model are that the normal stress parallel to crack faces is included in the yielding condition in the cohesive zone and traction force in the cohesive zone can be non‐uniform. For a ductile material defined by von Mises criterion without hardening, the present model confirms that the normal stress parallel to crack face increases with increasing crack speed and can be even larger than the normal traction in the cohesive zone, which justifies the necessity of including the normal stress parallel to the crack faces in the yielding condition at high crack speed. In addition, strain hardening effect is examined based on a non‐uniform traction distribution in the cohesive zone.  相似文献
