Combined low‐cycle fatigue/high‐cycle fatigue (LCF/HCF) loadings were investigated for smooth and circumferentially V‐notched cylindrical Ti–6Al–4V fatigue specimens. Smooth specimens were first cycled under LCF loading conditions for a fraction of the previously established fatigue life. The HCF 107 cycle fatigue limit stress after LCF cycling was established using a step loading technique. Specimens with two notch sizes, both having elastic stress concentration factors of Kt = 2.7, were cycled under LCF loading conditions at a nominal stress ratio of R = 0.1. The subsequent 106 cycle HCF fatigue limit stress at both R = 0.1 and 0.8 was determined. The combined loading LCF/HCF fatigue limit stresses for all specimens were compared to the baseline HCF fatigue limit stresses. After LCF cycling and prior to HCF cycling, the notched specimens were heat tinted, and final fracture surfaces examined for cracks formed during the initial LCF loading. Fatigue test results indicate that the LCF loading, applied for 75% of total LCF life for the smooth specimens and 25% for the notched specimens, resulted in only small reductions in the subsequent HCF fatigue limit stress. Under certain loading conditions, plasticity‐induced stress redistribution at the notch root during LCF cycling appears responsible for an observed increase in HCF fatigue limit stress, in terms of net section stress.  相似文献

The effect of notch types and stress concentration factors (Kt) on low cycle fatigue life and cracking of the DZ125 directionally solidified superalloy has been experimentally investigated. Single‐edge notched specimens with V and U type geometries were tested at 850 °C with stress ratio R = 0.1. High temperature in situ optical method was used to observe crack initiation and short crack propagation. Scanning electron microscope observation of fracture was used to analyse the failure mechanism. The results reveal that fatigue resistance decreases with Kt increasing from 1.76 to 4.35. The ratcheting is found to be affected by both Kt and the nominal stress from the displacement–force curve. In situ observations indicate that the cracking does not occur at the notch apex but at the location where the max principal stress or Hill's stress is the highest. According to the scanning electron microscope observations, the failure of the notched specimens strongly depends on the anisotropy microstructures.  相似文献

A simple method to analyse the notch sensitivity of specimens in fatigue tests is presented. The parameter m, which can be used to measure the notch sensitivity, the nominal stress and the stress concentration factor (Kt) are used to establish the method. In order to verify the feasibility of the method, notch fatigue test results from our group and literatures were collected. The results reveal that an optimal value of parameter m does exist for each material. Life predictions indicated that the model is able to describe the life evolution for notched specimens under high cycle fatigue and low cycle fatigue tests. Because the geometry effect is accounted for Kt, the method is suitable for the conditions when the notch geometries and the absolute dimensions are similar to the tested specimens.  相似文献

A critical distance method for predicting the fatigue limit stresses of notched specimens was implemented for notched specimens with a wide range of notch dimensions. Circumferentially notched cylindrical specimens (kt=1.97–4.07) taken from Ti–6Al–4V forged plate were cycled to failure (R=0.1 and 0.5) using a step loading method for estimating the 106 cycle fatigue limit stresses. These experimental data were used in combination with finite element solutions for all specimen geometries to determine a ‘critical distance’, a quantity or parameter determined from the stress distribution surrounding the notch in combination with fatigue limit stress data from unnotched specimens. A unique parameter was not found for all of the specimen geometries. However, predictions for the fatigue limit stresses of the larger notch geometries may be made with some amount of accuracy using a single value of the critical distance parameter, while reasonable predictions for the specimens with the smallest notch dimensions may be made upon the recognition of an apparent size effect.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The influence of low-temperature gaseous carburisation on notch fatigue behaviour of 316L steel under cyclic axial loading was investigated. After carburisation, the carburised case was well distributed at the surface region and was not influenced by the notch geometry. Low-temperature carburisation considerably enhanced the notch fatigue performance, which led to 32% and 44% increase in the endurance limits for the specimens with stress concentration factors K t?=?1.91 and 3.91, respectively. The notch sensitivity of 316L steel reduced after carburisation. Irrespective of the applied stress amplitude, the fatigue crack nucleation sites were always at the notch root surface for the untreated specimens. For the carburised specimens, fatigue cracks nucleation changed from surface at high-level stress to subsurface at low-level stress.  相似文献

Growth of long fatigue cracks is investigated in Inconel 718 superalloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The fatigue crack growth curve and the threshold value of the stress intensity factor are experimentally determined on compact-tension specimens fabricated using a RENISHAW A250 system and the recommended processing parameters. The crack propagation curve and the crack propagation threshold of this SLM material are compared with literature data describing the behavior of conventionally manufactured Inconel 718. The fatigue crack growth is discussed in terms of the specific microstructure and residual stresses produced by selective laser melting.  相似文献

Selective laser melting (SLM) is an emerging additive manufacturing technology, capable of producing complex geometry components. The current work studied both the effect of substrate material and mean stress on the fatigue crack growth behaviour along interfaces of bi‐material specimens, substrate, and part by SLM. Fatigue tests were carried out in agreement with ASTM E647 standard, using 6‐mm‐thick compact specimens. The substrate steel has only a negligible effect both on the fatigue crack propagation rate and on the crack path. The failure occurs in the material additively manufactured by SLM, near the interface. The mean stress produced only a reduced influence on the fatigue crack propagation rate in the Paris regime. For larger values of ΔK, where Kmax approaches KIc, a significant influence of the mean stress was observed. In spite of nondetection of crack closure, the application of overloads promoted significant fatigue crack retardation, quite similar for both substrate materials, probably due to the crack bifurcation during the overload.  相似文献

The fatigue behaviour of small, semi‐elliptical surface cracks in a bearing steel was investigated under cyclic shear‐mode loading in ambient air. Fully reversed torsion was combined with a static axial compressive stress to obtain a stable shear‐mode crack growth in the longitudinal direction of cylindrical specimens. Non‐propagating cracks less than 1 mm in size were obtained (i) by decreasing the stress amplitude in tests using notched specimens and (ii) by using smooth specimens in constant stress amplitude tests. The threshold stress intensity factor ranges, ΔKIIth and ΔKIIIth, were estimated from the shape and dimensions of non‐propagating cracks. Wear on the crack faces was inferred by debris and also by changes in microstructure in the wake of crack tip. These effects resulted in a significant increase in the threshold value. The threshold value decreased with a decrease in crack size. No significant difference was observed between the values of ΔKIIth and ΔKIIIth.  相似文献

The circular notched compact specimens, along with standard specimens having straight or chevron notch are provided for fatigue and fracture toughness testings in order to study the crack observation capability during fatigue pre-cracking, skewness of the crack front, and the resulting fracture toughness KQ. The test results indicated that circular notched specimens significantly facilitate the crack observation during fatigue testing as the cracks initiate on both surfaces of the specimen. No remarkable differences were observed on geometries of the fatigue crack front obtained and the resulting fracture toughness among these three types of specimen. The macroscopic observation of beach marks on the fracture surfaces revealed that, in the present material Ti-6Al-4V (ELI), the advance of only 1.3% of the whole crack length corresponded to the load level at which fracture toughness KQ was evaluated.  相似文献

The paper deals with the multi‐axial fatigue strength of notched specimens made of 39NiCrMo3 hardened and tempered steel. Circumferentially V‐notched specimens were subjected to combined tension and torsion loading, both in‐phase and out‐of‐phase, under two nominal load ratios, R=?1 and R= 0, also taking into account the influence of the biaxiality ratio, λ=τaa. The notch geometry of all axi‐symmetric specimens was a notch tip radius of 0.1 mm, a notch depth of 4 mm, an included V‐notch angle of 90° and a net section diameter of 12 mm. The results from multi‐axial tests are discussed together with those obtained under pure tension and pure torsion loading on plain and notched specimens. Furthermore the fracture surfaces are examined and the size of non‐propagating cracks measured from some run‐out specimens at 5 million cycles. Finally, all results are presented in terms of the local strain energy density averaged in a given control volume close to the V‐notch tip. The control volume is found to be dependent on the loading mode.  相似文献

Fracture and fatigue tests have been performed on micro‐sized specimens for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) or micro system technology (MST) applications. Cantilever beam type specimens with dimensions of 10 × 12 × 50 μm3, approximately 1/1000th the size of ordinary‐sized specimens, were prepared from a Ni–P amorphous thin film by focused ion beam machining. Fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness tests were carried out in air at room temperature, using a mechanical testing machine developed for micro‐sized specimens. In fracture toughness tests, fatigue pre‐cracks were introduced ahead of the notches. Fatigue crack growth resistance curves were obtained from the measurement of striation spacing on the fatigue surface, with closure effects on the fatigue crack growth also being observed for micro‐sized specimens. Once fatigue crack growth occurs, the specimens fail within one thousand cycles. This indicates that the fatigue life of micro‐sized specimens is mainly dominated by a crack initiation process, also suggesting that even a micro‐sized surface flaw may be an initiation site for fatigue cracks which will shorten the fatigue life of micro‐sized specimens. As a result of fracture toughness tests, the values of plane strain fracture toughness, KIC, were not obtained because the criteria of plane strain were not satisfied by this specimen size. As the plane strain requirements are determined by the stress intensity, K, and by the yield stress of the material, it is difficult for micro‐sized specimens to satisfy these requirements. Plane‐stress‐ and plane‐strain‐dominated regions were clearly observed on the fracture surfaces and their sizes were consistent with those estimated by fracture mechanics calculations. This indicates that fracture mechanics is still valid for such micro‐sized specimens. The results obtained in this investigation should be considered when designing actual MEMS/MST devices.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical study on the fatigue behaviour of cruciform load carrying joints made from the duplex stainless steel and failing from the weld root through the weld metal. Fatigue crack growth (FCG) data, obtained in specimens of the weld metal, are presented, as well as threshold data, both obtained for R= 0 and 0.5. The influence of stress ratio is discussed, and the FCGR results are compared with data for low carbon structural steels. S–N data were obtained in the joints, both for R= 0.05 and 0.5, and the fatigue cracking mechanisms were analysed in detail with the SEM. It was found that the cracks propagated very early in the lifetime of the joints, under mixed mode conditions (I + II), but the mode I component was found to be predominant over mode II. The geometries of the cracks were defined in detail from measurements taken in the fracture surfaces. A 2D FE analysis was carried out for the mixed mode inclined cracks obtained at the weld root, and the J‐integral formulations were obtained as a function of crack length and crack propagation angle. The values of the crack propagation angle, θi, were obtained for the Jmax conditions, and it was found that, in the fatigue tests, the cracks propagated in directions very close to the predicted directions of maximum J. KI and KII formulations were obtained, and the KI data were compared with the formulations given in the PD6493 (BS7910) document, and some differences were found. A more general formulation for K under mixed mode conditions was derived. The derived K solutions were applied to predict the fatigue lives of the joints under crack propagation, and an extremely good agreement was found with the experimental results obtained in the fatigue tests.  相似文献

The notch sensitivity of three steels with similar plain fatigue limits was analysed and modelled. The analysis was made by using a model previously derived which estimated the fatigue limit of blunt notched components by means of the parameter ktd defined as the stress concentration introduced by the notch at a distance d from the notch root surface equal to the distance between microstructural barriers. The analyses show how the first two or three microstructural barriers define the fatigue limit and the fatigue notch sensitivity of blunt notched specimens.  相似文献

The crack‐healing behaviour of machining cracks in Si3N4/20 wt% SiC composite was investigated. The machining cracks were introduced by a heavy machining process, during the creation of a semicircular groove. The machined specimens were healed at various temperatures and times in air. The optimized crack‐healing condition of the machined specimens was found to be a temperature of 1673 K and a time of 10 h. The specimens healed by this condition exhibited almost the same strength as the smooth specimens healed. Moreover, the bending strengths and the fatigue limits of the machined specimens healed were systematically investigated at temperatures from room temperature to 1673 K. The machined specimens healed at the optimized condition exhibited an almost constant bending strength (~700 MPa) up to 1673 K. Also, the specimens exhibited considerably high cyclic and static fatigue limits at temperatures from 1073 to 1573 K. These results demonstrated that the crack‐healing could be an effective method for improving the structural integrity and reducing machining costs of the Si3N4/SiC composite ceramic.  相似文献

A numerical prediction of the life of a gas turbine model disc by means of the finite‐element technique is presented and the solution is compared with an experimental rim‐spinning test. The finite‐element method was used to obtain the K solution for a disc with two types of cracks, both at the notch root of the blade insert and located in the corner and in the centre. A crack aspect ratio of (a/c) = 1 was assumed. The fracture mechanics parameters J‐integral and K were used in the assessment, which were computed with linear elastic and elastic–plastic material behaviour. Using a crack propagation program with appropriate fatigue‐creep crack growth‐rate data, previously obtained in specimens for the nickel‐based superalloy IN718 at 600 °C, fatigue life predictions were made. The predicted life results were checked against experimental data obtained in real model discs. The numerical method, based on experimental fatigue data obtained in small laboratory specimens, shows great potential for development, and may be able to reduce the enormous costs involved in the testing of model and full‐size components.  相似文献

An energy density zone (EDZ) model is developed for the prediction of fatigue life. The microscopic effects can be involved in the EDZ model. Three scale transitional functions in the model are utilized to describe the trans‐scale behaviours of fatigue failure from micro‐scale to macro‐scale. Fatigue failure behaviours of a low‐alloy and ultra‐high‐strength steel material (i.e. 40CrNi2Si2MoVA steel) is investigated. Two fatigue parameters in the model are determined from the experimental S–N curves for the smooth cylinder specimens (the stress concentration factor, SCF, Kt = 1). Then, fatigue lives of notched specimens with SCFs Kt = 2 and Kt = 3 are predicted respectively by the proposed model. The predicted S–N curves are satisfactory in comparison with the experimental results. Scatter of the fatigue test data can be depicted when the microscopic effects are considered. Influences of microscopic effects on the fatigue behaviours are explored by means of numerical simulations.  相似文献

In this paper, the small fatigue crack behavior of titanium alloy TC4 at different stress ratios was investigated. Single‐edge‐notch tension specimens were fatigued axially under a nominal maximum stress of 370 MPa at room temperature. Results indicate that fatigue cracks in TC4 initiate from the interface between α and β phases or within α phase. More than 90% of the total fatigue life is consumed in the small crack initiation and growth stages. The crack growth process of TC4 can be divided into three typical stages, ie, microstructurally small crack stage, physically small crack stage, and long crack stage. Although the stress ratio has a significant effect on the total fatigue life and crack initiation life at constant σmax, its effect on crack growth rate is indistinguishable at R = ?0.1, 0.1, and 0.3 when crack growth rate is plotted as a function of ?K.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The fatigue crack growth behaviour of 0.47% carbon steel was studied under mode II and III loadings. Mode II fatigue crack growth tests were carried out using specially designed double cantilever (DC) type specimens in order to measure the mode II threshold stress intensity factor range, ΔKIIth. The relationship ΔKIIth > ΔKIth caused crack branching from mode II to I after a crack reached the mode II threshold. Torsion fatigue tests on circumferentially cracked specimens were carried out to study the mechanisms of both mode III crack growth and of the formation of the factory‐roof crack surface morphology. A change in microstructure occurred at a crack tip during crack growth in both mode II and mode III shear cracks. It is presumed that the crack growth mechanisms in mode II and in mode III are essentially the same. Detailed fractographic investigation showed that factory‐roofs were formed by crack branching into mode I. Crack branching started from small semi‐elliptical cracks nucleated by shear at the tip of the original circumferential crack.  相似文献

Prediction model for the growth rates of short cracks based on Kmax‐constant tests with M(T) specimens The fatigue crack growth behaviour of short corner cracks in the Aluminium alloys Al 6013‐T6 and Al 2524‐T351 was investigated. The aim was to determine the crack growth rates of small corner cracks at stress ratios of R = 0.1, R = 0.7 and R = 0.8 and to develop a method to predict these crack growth rates from fatigue crack growth curves determined for long cracks. Corner cracks were introduced into short crack specimens, similar to M(T)‐specimens, at one side of a hole (Ø = 4.8 mm) by cyclic compression (R = 20). The pre‐cracks were smaller than 100 μm (notch + precrack). A completely new method was used to cut very small notches (10–50 μm) into the specimens with a Focussed Ion Beam. The results of the fatigue crack growth tests with short corner cracks were compared with long fatigue crack growth test data. The short cracks grew at ΔK‐values below the threshold for long cracks at the same stress ratio. They also grew faster than long cracks at the same ΔK‐values and the same stress ratios. A model was developed on the basis of Kmax‐constant tests with long cracks that gives a good and conservative prediction of the short crack growth rates.  相似文献

Fracture mechanics and notch sensitivity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A diagram valid for the analysis of the fatigue limit of cracks and notches centred in an infinite plate was recently proposed by the authors of the present work with the aim to make explicit the bridging at the fatigue limit between defect sensitivity (correlated to the length parameter a0, according to El Haddad–Topper–Smith's definition) and notch sensitivity (correlated to a*, where a* is a particular notch depth corresponding to the intersection between the ΔKth and Δσ0/Kt curves). The expression being valid, defect sensitivity and notch sensitivity were seen as two sides of the same medal. Such a diagram is now extended to finite size components by simply introducing the shape factor α commonly used in fracture mechanics. The obtained critical defect size is termed aD, which is a material and geometry dependent parameter, in order to distinguish it from a0, which is a material parameter. As a consequence the critical notch depth aN is introduced, such that . This results in the proposal of a ‘universal’ diagram able to summarize experimental data related to different materials, geometry and loading conditions. The diagram, the validity of which is checked by means of several results available in the literature, is applied both to the interpretation of the scale effect and to the surface finishing effect.  相似文献
