Dopamine signaling has been implicated in the control of food intake and body weight. In particular, dopamine is important in the control of meal size and number and is thought to mediate the response to metabolic deprivation states. In the present experiments, the authors assessed the role of the dopamine-3 receptor (D?R) in the feeding responses to 2-deoxy-D-glucose, mercaptoacetate, and peripheral insulin. All 3 compounds increased food intake in wild-type mice, but the hyperphagic responses were blunted in D?R-/- mice. In other experiments, D?R-/- mice were hyperresponsive to the administration of amylin and leptin relative to wild-type mice. These results support the hypothesis that D?Rs chronically inhibit the effects of adiposity hormones, thereby contributing to a net anabolic state. The authors investigated the role of food incentive properties and homeostatic state on the motivational, anticipatory, and consummatory aspects of feeding. Behavioral tests were carried out on food-sated and food-restricted rats that were presented with 2 kinds of food differing in their palatability level. Both food-sated and food-restricted rats consumed large quantities and were highly motivated when presented with very palatable food. In contrast, only food-restricted rats developed anticipatory responses, regardless of the kind of food presented. These data suggest that food incentive properties play a key role in the control of consummatory and motivational components of feeding but seem less involved in the regulation of anticipatory behavior. The standard activity-based anorexia procedure provides rats with access to a running wheel while restricting their access to dry food. This can produce reduced food intake and progressive weight loss. Using this procedure, in the present study (Experiment 1) the authors found changes in drinking patterns both in the period of high activity preceding food access and during the feeding period. Varying the procedure by providing wet mash (Experiment 2) or by prior adaptation to a drinking schedule (Experiment 3) prevented the self-starvation effect. Experiments showing that food intake can be dramatically increased (hyperphagia) or even eliminated (aphagia) as a result of brain lesions or of brain stimulation are described. The most widely accepted explanation of how the brain controls feeding behavior, Anand and Brobeck's dual-center theory of hypothalamic regulation, does not account satisfac-factorily for all the data, but it does account for a great deal. Experiments are reviewed in which food intake was altered by lesions or by stimulation outside of the hypothalamus, and it is suggested that the hypothalamus is part of a larger "feeding system" that also includes parts of the thalamus, temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and midbrain. The present experiments were conducted to provide a more detailed behavioral analysis of the dissociable roles of the basolateral (BLA) and central nucleus (CeA) of the amygdala in mediating intra-accumbens (Acb) opioid-induced feeding of a high-fat diet. Confirming previous findings, temporary inactivation of the CeA with the GABAA agonist muscimol reduced DAMGO (D-Ala2-NMe-Phe4-Glyol5-enkephalin)-induced and baseline food intake, whereas intra-BLA muscimol selectively blocked only DAMGO-induced food intake, leaving baseline feeding intact. However, although inactivation of the BLA reduced DAMGO-induced food intake to control levels, this treatment led to exaggerated number and duration of food hopper entries after food intake had ended. A subsequent experiment under conditions of limited access to the diet found the identical pattern of behavior following intra-Acb administration of DAMGO, regardless of whether the BLA was inactivated. Last, BLA inactivation was shown to have no influence on feeding driven by a state of negative-energy balance (24-hr food deprivation), demonstrating a specific influence of the BLA on opioid-driven feeding. These findings suggest that BLA mediates palatability-driven feeding and that this influence is particular to the consummatory act of ingestion. Octopus macropus and Octopus vulgaris have overlapping habitats and are exposed to similar temporal changes. Whereas the former species is described as nocturnal in the field, there are conflicting reports about the activity time of the latter one. To compare activity patterns, the authors tested both species in the laboratory. Octopuses were exposed to a light-dark cycle and held under constant dim light for 7 days each. O. macropus showed nocturnal and light-cued activity. According to casual observations, O. vulgaris started out nocturnal but had switched to mostly diurnal when the experiment began. Individual variation of its activity was found. The different activity patterns of O. macropus and O. vulgaris might reflect their lifestyles, the latter species being more generalist. In the peak procedure, starts and stops in responding bracket the target time at which food is expected. The variability in start and stop times is proportional to the target time (scalar variability), as is the systematic error in the mean center (scalar error). During the first year of life, infants show decreased sensitivity to phonetic differences not used in their native language and increased sensitivity to the differences that are used. It has been shown that this change in speech perception is a function of the distributional properties of the input. The present study explores whether the mechanism responsible for the developmental changes regarding the organization of phonetic categories is a general mechanism shared with other animals. The results demonstrate that the distributional exposure to a phonetic continuum affects the subsequent discrimination of these phonemes in rats, indicating that the ability to use distributional cues to change the phonetic category structure extends beyond humans. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and other developed nations. In the United States, 27% of adults are obese and an additional 34% are overweight. Research in the past decade has shown that genetic influences clearly predispose some individuals to obesity. The marked increase in prevalence, however, appears to be attributable to a toxic environment that implicitly discourages physical activity while explicitly encouraging the consumption of supersized portions of high-fat, high-sugar foods. Management of the obesity epidemic will require a two-pronged approach. First, better treatments, including behavioral, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions, are needed for individuals who are already obese. The second and potentially more promising approach is to prevent the development of obesity by tackling the toxic environment. This will require bold public policy initiatives such as regulating food advertising directed at children. The authors call not for the adoption of a specific policy initiative, but instead propose that policy research, based on viewing obesity as a public health problem, become a central focus of research. Pharmacological blockade of muscarinic receptors in the nucleus accumbens reduces food intake and instrumental behaviors that are reinforced by food delivery. Nucleus accumbens muscarinic antagonism may specifically suppress the hedonic or reinforcing effects of food, thus blocking its capacity to direct behavior. Alternatively, muscarinic receptor blockade may cause a negative hedonic state that interferes with appetitive learning and food intake. In these experiments, rats received infusions of scopolamine methyl bromide (10 μg/0.5 μl) into the nucleus accumbens core, following exposure to a novel flavor of liquid diet (Experiment 1) or prior to being placed into a place preference apparatus (Experiment 2). In both experiments, nucleus accumbens muscarinic receptor antagonism caused subsequent avoidance of the paired cue (flavor or spatial location). This effect was specific to cholinergic manipulation; no conditioned taste avoidance was observed after pairing the novel flavor with nucleus accumbens core antagonism of N-methyl-D-aspartate, dopamine D?, or opioid receptors (Experiment 3). These experiments confirm previous reports of a critical role for striatal acetylcholine in modulating goal-directed behaviors, but suggest caution when interpreting behavioral effects of pharmacological manipulation of striatal acetylcholine. In young rats, the pattern of neuronal ensemble activity correlations expressed among hippocampal pyramidal cells during behavior persists during subsequent quiet wakefulness and slow-wave sleep, a process that may facilitate the consolidation of episodic memories. The present study explored the hypothesis that age-related changes in this process might contribute to memory impairments observed during normal aging. Neuronal activity was recorded from CA1 pyramidal cells, and in both young and old rats, there was a strong similarity between the resting epoch activity patterns and those from the preceding behavior epoch. This similarity was strongest during sharp-wave events. There were no detectable differences in the reactivation process or the decay rate between the young and old age groups. Thus, age differences in spatial memory do not appear to be explainable by differences in the spontaneous reactivation of familiar patterns within the hippocampus during the immediate postbehavior period. The authors review the effect of the presence of others on food intake. In social facilitation studies, people tend to eat more in groups than when alone. In modeling studies, the presence of others may facilitate or inhibit intake, depending on how much these other people eat. Studies of impression management demonstrate that people tend to eat less in the presence of others than when alone. The authors attempt to reconcile these divergent literatures by reference to a model of inhibitory norms that govern eating. In the presence of palatable food, and in the absence of clear signals of satiety, people look outward to cues from the environment to determine when to stop eating. Socially derived inhibitory norms can account for either increased or decreased intake in the presence of others, depending on how much the others eat and the extent to which one is eager to impress them. The present series of experiments aimed to pinpoint the source of nucleus accumbens core (AcbC) effects on delay discounting. Rats were trained with an impulsive choice procedure between an adjusting smaller sooner reward and a fixed larger later reward. The AcbC-lesioned rats produced appropriate choice behavior when the reward magnitude was equal. An increase in reward magnitude resulted in a failure to increase preference for the larger later reward in the AcbC-lesioned rats, whereas a decrease in the larger later reward duration resulted in normal alterations in choice behavior in AcbC-lesioned rats. Subsequent experiments with a peak timing (Experiments 2 and 3) and a behavioral contrast (Experiment 4) indicated that the AcbC-lesioned rats suffered from decreased incentive motivation during changes in reward magnitude (Experiments 2 and 4) and when expected rewards were omitted (Experiments 2 and 3), but displayed intact anticipatory timing of reward delays (Experiments 2 and 3). Psychological processes may play a role in the evaluation of the effectiveness of exercise and subsequent food intake. In order to further investigate this phenomenon, the effects of the timing of exercise relative to an eating opportunity were evaluated. Female undergraduate participants who were of average weight and did not exercise regularly were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (exercise before eating [n = 10], exercise after eating [n = 11], or no exercise [n = 12]). Expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise, value of dieting, and intake were assessed. Participants who exercised after eating had higher expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise than those who exercised before eating, while those who exercised before eating reported valuing dieting more than controls. No effects on intake emerged; therefore, there appears to be a disconnect between dieting appraisals and actual eating behaviour. In an earlier work (S. E. Swithers & T. L. Davidson, 2008), rats provided with a fixed amount of a yogurt diet mixed with saccharin gained more weight and showed impaired caloric compensation relative to rats given the same amount of yogurt mixed with glucose. The present 4 experiments examined the generality of these findings and demonstrated that increased body weight gain was also demonstrated when animals consumed a yogurt diet sweetened with an alternative high-intensity sweetener (acesulfame potassium; AceK) as well as in animals given a saccharin-sweetened base diet (refried beans) that was calorically similar but nutritionally distinct from low-fat yogurt. These studies also extended earlier findings by showing that body weight differences persist after saccharin-sweetened diets are discontinued and following a shift to a diet sweetened with glucose. In addition, rats first exposed to a diet sweetened with glucose still gain additional weight when subsequently exposed to a saccharin-sweetened diet. The results of these experiments add support to the hypothesis that exposure to weak or nonpredictive relationships between sweet tastes and caloric consequences may lead to positive energy balance. Five experiments used a compound test procedure to compare the rate parameters for the associative changes resulting from reinforcement and nonreinforcement. Experiments I and 4, using a magazineapproach procedure in rats, found initial acquisition to proceed more rapidly but to generalize less broadly than extinction. Experiments 2 and 5 repeated these observations in an autoshaping preparation with pigeons. Experiment 3 found no evidence for differential disruption of acquisition and extinction in testing. The effects of dl-cathinone on milk intake and motor activity were investigated in bottle- and cannula-fed rats. Acute injections of cathinone produced dose-dependent increases in activity in both groups but only produced decreased intake in bottle-fed rats. With chronic injections, tolerance to the suppression of intake developed in the bottle-fed group, accompanied by decreased activity. After the tolerance phase, switching from bottle to cannula feeding produced further increases in intake, whereas switching from cannula to bottle feeding produced decreased intakes. These results suggest that (a) cathinone suppresses intake by inducing locomotion and stereotypy, which interfere with the appetitive phase of feeding, and (b) tolerance to drug-induced hypophagia involves learning to suppress such movements, as proposed by the instrumental learning model. To test the proposition that generalization of expectancy changes occurs along a dimension of learned-goal similarity, a level-of-aspiration paradigm was utilized. The results were dealt with in terms of proportion of Ss who changed their expectancies on three generalization tasks (which varied in goal-relatedness to a control task by decreasing amounts) after experiencing success or failure on the control task. The data supported the hypothesis and indicated that the three tasks were significantly different from each other in relative position along the dimension of goal similarity.
