The ylide-initiated radical copolymerization of 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) at 60°C using carbon tetrachloride as inert solvent yields non-alternating copolymers. The kinetic parameters, average rate of polymerization (Rp) and orders of reaction with respect to monomers and initiator, have been evaluated and the kinetic equation is found to be Rpα[ylide]0.94 [MMA]1.0 [4-VP]1.5. The values of the energy of activation and kp2/kt are 48 kJ mol?1 and 6.6 × 10?5 litre mol?1s?1, respectively. The copolymers have been characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy.  相似文献

1,2,3,4‐Tetraphenylcyclopentadiene triphenyl stibonium ylide initiated radical polymerization of n‐butyl methacrylate (n‐BMA) in dioxane at (60 ± 0.2)°C for 90 min under nitrogen atmosphere has been carried out. The system follows nonideal kinetics, i.e., Rp α [ylide]0.2 [n‐BMA]1.8. The value of k/kt and overall energy of activation have been computed as 0.133 × 10?2 L mol?1 s?1, 33 kJ/mol, respectively. The FTIR spectrum shows a band at 1745 cm?1 due to acrylate group of n‐BMA. The 1H NMR spectrum shows a peak of two magnetically equivalent protons of methylene group at 2.1 δ ppm. The DSC curve shows glass transition temperature (Tg) as 41°C. The presence of six hyperfine lines in ESR spectrum indicates that the system follows free radical polymerization and the initiation is brought about by phenyl radical. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bismuthoniumylide‐initiated radical copolymerization of methylmethacrylate with styrene at 60 ± 0.2°C using dioxane as an inert solvent, follows ideal kinetics (Rp ∝ [ylide]0.5 [MMA]1.0 [sty]1.0), and yields alternating copolymer as evident from NMR spectroscopy. The values of reactivity ratios r1 and r2, calculated from Finemann–Ross method are 0.48 and 0.45, respectively. The system follows ternary molecular complex mechanism. The radical mode of polymerization has been confirmed by ESR spectroscopy and the effect of hydroquinone. The value of activation energy and k/kt are 65.0 KJ mol?1 and 2.5 × 10?5 l mole?1 s?1, respectively. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 80: 2774–2781, 2001  相似文献

Dialkyl vinylphosphonates such as dimethyl vinylphosphonate (DMVP) and diethyl vinylphosphonate were quantitatively polymerized with dicumyl peroxide (DCPO) at 130°C in bulk. The polymerization of DMVP with DCPO was kinetically studied in bulk by fourier transform near‐infrared spectroscopy (FTNIR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The initial polymerization rate (Rp) was given by Rp = k[DCPO]0.5[DMVP]1.0 at 110°C, being the same as that of the conventional radical polymerization involving bimolecular termination. The overall activation energy of the polymerization was estimated to be 26.2 kcal/mol. The polymerization system involved ESR‐observable propagating polymer radicals under the practical polymerization conditions. ESR‐determined rate constants of propagation (kp) and termination (kt) were kp = 19 L/mol s and kt = 5.8 × 103 L/mol s at 110°C, respectively. The molecular weight of the resultant poly(DMVP)s was low (Mn = 3.4 ? 3.5 × 103), because of the high chain transfer constant (Cm = 3.9 × 10?2 at 110°C) to the monomer. DMVP (M1) showed a considerably high reactivity in the radical copolymerization with trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMVS) (M2) at 110°C in bulk, giving an inorganic component‐containing functional copolymer with potential flame‐retardant properties; r1 = 1.6 and r2 = 0. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The presence of a bulky substituent at the 2‐position of 1,3‐butadiene derivatives is known to affect the polymerization behavior and microstructure of the resulting polymers. Free‐radical polymerization of 2‐triethoxysilyl‐1,3‐butadiene ( 1 ) was carried out under various conditions, and its polymerization behavior was compared with that of 2‐triethoxymethyl‐ and other silyl‐substituted butadienes. A sticky polymer of high 1,4‐structure ( ) was obtained in moderate yield by 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)‐initiated polymerization. A smaller amount of Diels–Alder dimer was formed compared with the case of other silyl‐substituted butadienes. The rate of polymerization (Rp) was found to be Rp = k[AIBN]0.5[ 1 ]1.2, and the overall activation energy for polymerization was determined to be 117 kJ mol?1. The monomer reactivity ratios in copolymerization with styrene were r 1 = 2.65 and rst = 0.26. The glass transition temperature of the polymer of 1 was found to be ?78 °C. Free‐radical polymerization of 1 proceeded smoothly to give the corresponding 1,4‐polydiene. The 1,4‐E content of the polymer was less compared with that of poly(2‐triethoxymethyl‐1,3‐butadiene) and poly(2‐triisopropoxysilyl‐1,3‐butadiene) prepared under similar conditions. Ultrafast preparation of branched poly(methyl acrylate) (BPMA) with high‐molecular weight through single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of inimer at 25°C has been attempted, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at 60°C was also carried out for comparison. Gas chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and triple detection size exclusion chromatography were used to analyze these polymerizations. As expected, SET‐LRP system showed much faster polymerization rate than ATRP system, the calculated apparent propagation rate constants (kpapp) are 3.69 × 10?2 min?1 and 6.23 × 10?3 min?1 for SET‐LRP and ATRP system, respectively. BPMA with high‐molecular weight (Mw.MALLS = 86,400 g mol?1) compared with that in ATRP (Mw.MALLS = 61,400 g mol?1) has been prepared. POLYM. ENG. BACKGROUND: The effect of acrylic acid neutralization on the degradation of alkoxyamine initiators for nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) was studied using styrene/acrylic acid and styrene/sodium acrylate random copolymers (20 mol% initial acrylate feed concentration) as macro‐initiators. The random copolymers were re‐initiated with fresh styrene in 1,4‐dioxane at 110 °C at SG1 mediator/BlocBuilder® unimolecular initiator ratios of 5 and 10 mol%. RESULTS: The value of kpK (kp = propagation rate constant, K = equilibrium constant) was not significantly different for styrene/acrylic acid and styrene/sodium acrylate compositions at 110 °C (kpK = 2.4 × 10?6–4.6 × 10?6 s?1) and agreed closely with that for styrene homopolymerization at the same conditions (kpK = 2.7 × 10?6–3.0 × 10?6 s?1). All random copolymers had monomodal, narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index M?w/M?n = 1.10–1.22) with similar number‐average molecular weights M?n = 19.3–22.1 kg mol?1. Re‐initiation of styrene/acrylic acid random copolymers with styrene resulted in block copolymers with broader molecular weight distributions (M?w/M?n = 1.37–2.04) compared to chains re‐initiated by styrene/sodium acrylate random copolymers (M?w/M?n = 1.33). CONCLUSIONS: Acrylic acid degradation of the alkoxyamines was prevented by neutralization of acrylic acid and allowed more SG1‐terminated chains to re‐initiate the polymerization of a second styrenic block by NMP. Alternating copolymers, containing styrene and citronellol sequences, have been synthesized by radical polymerization using benzoylperoxide (BPO)–p‐acetylbenzylidenetriphenyl arsoniumylide (pABTAY) as initiator, in xylene at 80 ± 1 °C for 3 h under inert atmosphere. The kinetic expression is Rp ∝ [BPO]0.88 [citronellol]0.68 [styrene]0.56 with BPO and Rp ∝ [pABTAY]0.27 [citronellol]0.76 [styrene]0.63 with pABTAY, ie the system follows non‐ideal kinetics in both cases, because of primary radical termination and degradative chain transfer reactions. The activation energy with BPO and pABTAY is 94 kJ mol?1 and 134 kJ mol?1, respectively. Different spectral techniques, such as IR, FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, have been used to characterize the copolymer, demonstrating the presence of alcoholic and phenyl groups of citronellol and styrene. The alternating nature of the copolymer is shown by the product of reactivity ratios r1 (Sty) = 0.81 and r2 (Citro) = 0.015 using BPO and r1 (Sty) = 0.37 and r2 (Citro) = 0.01 using (pABTAY), which are calculated by the Finemann–Ross method. A mechanism of copolymerization is proposed. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer initiated by a novel Ni(II)α‐benzoinoxime complex have been achieved under homogeneous conditions in the 25–60°C temperature range. The activity for polymerization increases with reaction temperature and by carrying out the polymerization in solution of low‐polarity solvents without any induction time. The obtained polymers have weight‐average molecular weights about 105 and slight broad polydispersity indexes (2.2 ≤ Mw/Mn ≤ 3.3). Dependence of rate constants polymerization and decomposition of initiator (kapp and kd, respectively) on temperature was investigated and activation parameters were computed from Arrhenius plot. 1H‐NMR analysis of PMMA revealed a syndio‐rich atactic microstructure in agreement with conventional radical process. Radical scavenger TEMPO effect together with microstructure and molecular weight distributions data supported that the polymerization proceed via free radical mechanism. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The alternating copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with styrene (S) using β-picolinium-p-chlorophenacylide (β-PCPY) as radical initiator at 55, 60, and 65°C for 3 h has been kinetically investigated. The copolymerization rate (Rp) is proportional to the square root of [β-PCPY] and indicates bimolecular termination. The average degree of polymerization decreases as [β-PCPY] increases. The values of kp2/kt and energy of activation have been evaluated as 1.43 · 10-3 l mol-1 s-1 and 87 kJ mol-1, respectively. The NMR spectroscopy has been used to determine the structure, composition, and stereochemistry of copolymers.  相似文献

Dimethyl sulfonium 2-pyridyl carbonyl methylide (Ypy-s) initiated radical polymerization of styrene in dimethyl sulfoxide at 85±0.1°C for 6 h under a nitrogen blanket using dilatometric techniques has been studied. The initiator and monomer exponent values were calculated to be 0.5 and 1.2, respectively. The system follows ideal radical kinetics with bimolecular termination. The higher monomer exponent value is ascribed to significant solvent effects on the initiation rate. The overall activation energy and average value of k2p/kt are 52.0 kJ mol?1 and 1.0 × 10?3 litre mol?1 s?1, respectively. The polymerization was retarded in the presence of hydroquinone or benzene; dimethylformamide, however, enhanced the rate of polymerization. Kinetic data and ESR studies indicate that the overall polymerization takes place via triplet carbene formation which acts as a source of free radicals.  相似文献

p-nitrobenzyl triphenyl phosphonium ylide initiated radical polymerisation of MMA in 1-4 dioxane at 65 ± 1°C for 2 h under a nitrogen blanket, follows ideal kinetics with bimolecular termination. The overall activation energy and average value of k p 2/k t are 75.7 kJ mol and 1.14 × 102 l mol−1 s−1. FTIR Spectroscopy confirms a band of 1,729 cm−1 of the ester group. 1H NMR and 13C NMR confirms methoxy protons at 3.8 δ ppm and 52 δ ppm, respectively. E.S.R studies confirm a free radical mode of polymerisation. TGDTA analysis confirms the atactic nature of polymer and its thermal stability up to 120°C. Ylide dissociates to give a phenyl radical which is responsible for polymerisation.  相似文献

The synthesis of aromatic carboxyl functionalized polymers by atom transfer radical polymerization is described. The α‐bromo‐p‐toluic acid ( 1 ) initiated polymerization of styrene in the presence of copper(I) bromide and 2,2′‐bipyridyl affords quantitative yields of the corresponding aromatic carboxyl functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ). Polymerization proceeded via a controlled free radical process to afford quantitative yields of the corresponding aromatic carboxyl functionalized polymers with predictable molecular weights (Mn = 1600–25 900 g mol−1), narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn = 1.1–1.40) and an initiator efficiency above 0.87. The polymerization process was monitored by gas chromatographic analysis. The functionalized polymers were characterized by thin layer chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, spectroscopy, potentiometry and elemental analysis. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Radical copolymerization of zinc acrylate (ZnA2) with acrylonitrile (AN), initiated by As2S3–styrene complex(I), in dimethyl Sulphoxide (DMSO) at 90 ± 0.1°C for 1.0h under inert atmosphere, yields non-alternating copolymers. The kinetic expression is Rp ∝ [I]0.33 [ZnA2]0.25 [AN]0.44, i.e. the system follows non-ideal kinetics, which is due to primary radical termination as well as degradative chain transfer reactions. The values for activation energy (E) and k2p/kt are 128kJ mol−1 and 8.57 × 10−7 litre mol−1 s−1, respectively. Thermal stability, solubility in different solvents, and IR and NMR spectra have been evaluated.  相似文献

The free‐radical polymerization behavior of 1‐vinyl,2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) was studied at low conversions, using capillary dilatometry. The aqueous media were kept at neutral pH and the studies were conducted isothermally, at 40 or 45°C. The azo‐type initiators used were 4,4′‐azobis‐4‐cyanopentanoic acid (ACPA), 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AZBN), and 2,2′‐azobis[2‐(2‐imidazolin‐2‐yl)propane dihydrochloride] (ABDH). The monomer concentration and initiator concentration ranges were 1.17–2.34 mol L−1 and 1–8 mmol L−1, respectively. The rates of polymerization (Rp) and orders of reaction with respect to NVP and the initiator were evaluated and the kinetic equations were found to be Rp ∝ [NVP] [ACPA]1.2; Rp ∝ [NVP] [AZBN]1.1; and Rp ∝ [NVP]2.2 [ABDH]1.1. The polymers obtained were characterized by their viscosity numbers and correlation of the viscosity average molecular weights made with the type and amount of the azo initiator. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Diallyl phthalate (DAP) was polymerized in toluene using dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) of high concentrations (0.1–0.9 mol/L) as initiator. The polymerization of DAP of 1.50 mol/L with MAIB of 0.50 mol/L proceeded homogeneously at 80°C without gelation to give soluble polymers in a high yield of 93%. Kinetic results of the homogeneous polymerization at 80°C suggest significant contributions of the degradative chain transfer and the primary radical termination as shown by the rate equation, Rp = k [MAIB]0.8[DAP]1.0 (Rp = polymerization rate). The polymer formed in the polymerization of DAP (1.30 mol/L) with MAIB (0.50 mol/L) at 80°C for 8 h consisted of the DAP units with (17 mol %) and without (47 mol %) double bond and the methoxycarbonylpropyl group (36 mol %) as MAIB‐fragment. The large fraction of the incorporated initiator‐fragment as terminal group indicates that the polymer has a hyperbranched structure. The film cast from a solution of the hyperbranched poly(DAP) in tetrahydrofuran showed an iridescent color. The confocal scanning laser microscope image of the film revealed that the iridescent film contained the pores of about 1 μm arranged in an ordered array. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined polystyrenes with an α‐C(CH3)2(CN) and an ω‐chlorine atom end‐groups, and narrow polydispersity (Mn = 3000–4000 g mol−1, Mw/Mn = 1.3–1.4) have been synthesized by a radical polymerization process using 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile(AIBN)/FeCl3/PPh3 initiation system. When the ratio of [St]0:[AIBN]0:[FeCl3]0:[PPh3]0 is 200:1:4:12 at 110 °C, the radical polymerization is ‘living’, but the molecular weight of the polymers is not well‐controlled. The polymerization mechanism belongs to a reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Because the polymer obtained is end‐functionalized by a chlorine atom, it can then be used as a macroinitiator to perform a chain extension polymerization in the presence of CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system via a conventional ATRP process. The presence of a chlorine atom as an end‐group was determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

N‐methyl N‐vinyl acetamide (NMNVA) monomer was polymerized at low conversions and its free radical kinetics were detailed using capillary dilatometry. The polymerizations were conducted isothermally, at 40°C using 2,2′‐azobis[2‐(2‐imidazolin‐2‐yl) propane dihydrochloride] (ABDH) as initiator. Monomer concentration and initiator concentration ranges were 1.10–1.70 mol · L−1 and 1–4 mmol · L−1, respectively. The aqueous polymerization media were kept at neutral pH. The rates of polymerization (Rp) and orders of reaction with respect to NMNVA and ABDH concentrations were evaluated and the kinetic expression was found to be ideal, with Rp ∝ [NMNVA]1.07 [ABDH]0.61. The polymers obtained were characterized by their viscosity numbers and correlation of viscosity average molecular weights was made with the amount of ABDH initiator. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Di‐t‐butyl perfumarate (DBPF) was found to induce the radical polymerizations of various vinyl monomers at 60°C in benzene, although the initiation activity was considerably lower than those of dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate and benzoyl peroxide. The polymerizations with DBPF showed a tendency of dead‐end polymerization. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with DBPF was kinetically studied in chlorobenzene. The initial polymerization rate (Rp) was given by Rp = k [DBPF]0.5 [MMA]1.1. The overall activation energy of the polymerization was 47 kJ/mol, a very low value. Use of this value and activation energies of propagation and termination for MMA gave an unexpectedly low activation energy (65 kJ/mol) to the decomposition of DBPF, a t‐butyl perester, in the polymerization system. An ESR study on the polymerization of di‐2‐ethylhexyl itaconate with DBPF revealed that the observed dead‐end tendency comes from the consumption of DBPF. These results suggest that the initiator efficiency of DBPF is considerably low in the present polymerization systems. Some solvent effect was observed on the polymerization of MMA with DBPF. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 75: 218–224, 2000  相似文献

Radical polymerization of acenaphthylene (Ace) as a 1,2-disubstituted ethylene was investigated. It was found that the polymerization rate (Rp) was expressed as follows: Rp = k[Ace]1.0[AIBN]0.68, and that the overall activation energy was 113 kJ/mol for polymerization with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) in benzene at 50–70°C. Poly(Ace) obtained was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and GPC. Some substituted copolymethylenes were also prepared by radical copolymerization of Ace with other 1,2-disubstituted ethylenes, that is, maleic anhydride, diisopropyl fumarate, and N-cyclohexylmaleimide. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined from comonomer–copolymer composition curves.  相似文献
