The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for milk urea (MU) content in 3 main Danish dairy breeds. As a part of the Danish milk recording system, milk samples from cows on commercial farms were analyzed for MU concentration (mmol/L) and the percentages of fat and protein. There were 323,800 Danish Holstein, 70,634 Danish Jersey, and 27,870 Danish Red cows sampled with a total of 1,436,580, 368,251, and 133,922 test-day records per breed, respectively, included in the data set. Heritabilities for MU were low to moderate (0.22, 0.18, and 0.24 for the Holstein, Jersey, and Red breeds, respectively). The genetic correlation was close to zero between MU and milk yield in Jersey and Red, and −0.14 for Holstein. The genetic correlations between MU and fat and protein percentages, respectively, were positive for all 3 dairy breeds. Herd-test-day explained 51%, 54%, and 49% of the variation in MU in Holstein, Jersey, and Red, respectively. This indicates that MU levels in milk can be reduced by farm management. The current study shows that there are possibilities to influence MU by genetic selection as well as by farm management.  相似文献

Pure Holstein cows and Normande/Holstein, Montbeliarde/Holstein, and Scandinavian Red/Holstein crossbred cows were compared for calving difficulty and stillbirth rates. Scandinavian Red was a combination of Norwegian Red and Swedish Red. All cows calved from June 2001 to August 2004 at 7 commercial dairies. Statistical models for analysis included effects of herd-year-season of calving and sex of calf in addition to breed of sire and breed group of dam. Male calves had significantly more calving difficulty and stillbirths than heifer calves. First-calf Holsteins bred to Holstein, Brown Swiss, Montbeliarde, and Scandinavian Red bulls were used to determine effects of breed of sire. Calves sired by Scandinavian Red bulls (5.5%) and Brown Swiss bulls (12.5%) had significantly less calving difficulty than calves sired by Holstein bulls (16.4%) from Holstein first-calf heifers. Also, fewer stillbirths resulted from use of Scandinavian Red bulls (7.7%) compared with use of Holstein bulls (15.1%) for first-calf Holstein heifers. Scandinavian Red-sired calves (2.1%) had significantly less calving difficulty than Holstein-sired calves (8.4%) for multiparous Holstein dams. Non-Holstein breeds of sire had significantly fewer stillbirths than Holstein sires when mated to multiparous Holstein dams. To determine the effects of breed of dam, 676 pure Holsteins, 262 Normande/Holstein, 370 Montbeliarde/Holstein, and 264 Scandinavian Red/Holstein crossbred virgin heifers that had been bred to Brown Swiss, Montbeliarde, and Scandinavian Red bulls were utilized. All groups of crossbred cows had significantly less calving difficulty at first calving than pure Holsteins (3.7 to 11.6% vs. 17.7%). Furthermore, Montbeliarde/Holstein (6.2%) and Scandinavian Red/Holstein (5.1%) crossbreds had significantly lower stillbirth rates at first calving than pure Holsteins (14.0%).  相似文献

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic and genetic trends for stillbirth in Danish Holsteins. Trends of calving difficulty and calf size were also evaluated. The second aim was to compare predicted transmitting abilities (PTA) of sires for stillbirth using a linear and a threshold model. Direct and maternal genetic effects were modeled by fitting correlated additive genetic effects of the sire and the maternal grandsire (MGS). For both the calf and the dam, covariates of breed proportions of Holstein-Friesian (HF) and the heterozygosity between HF and the original Danish Black and White (ODBW) were included. Records from 1.8 million first-calving Danish Holstein cows calving from 1985 to 2002 were used. In this period, the overall frequency of stillbirth increased from 0.071 to 0.090. An unfavorable genetic trend of stillbirth was found for both the direct and maternal effect. The background for the genetic trends was an intense use of HF sires as sires of sons, which increased the proportion of HF genes to 94% in the Danish Holstein calves born in 2002. The effect of the imported HF genes was higher direct effects of calf size, calving difficulty, and stillbirth compared with the ODBW genes. The maternal effect of stillbirth was poorer for HF than for ODBW even though HF had a better maternal calving performance than ODBW. The threshold and the linear models showed almost similar predictions of transmitting abilities of sires.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the level of somatic cell count (SCC) and to explore the impact of somatic cell score (SCS) on the functional longevity of Canadian dairy cattle by using a Weibull proportional hazards model. Data consisted of 1,911,428 cows from 15,970 herds sired by 7,826 sires for Holsteins, 80,977 cows in 2,036 herds from 1,153 sires for Ayrshires, and 53,114 cows in 1,372 herds from 1,758 sires for Jerseys. Functional longevity was defined as the number of days from the first calving to culling, death, or censoring. The test-day SCC was transformed to a linear score, and the resulting SCS were averaged within each lactation. The average SCS were grouped into 10 classes. The statistical model included the effects of stage of lactation; season of production; annual change in herd size; type of milk recording supervision; age at first calving; effects of milk, fat, and protein yields, calculated as within-herd-year-parity deviations; herd-year-season of calving; SCS class; and sire. The relative culling rate was calculated for animals in each SCS class after accounting for the aforementioned effects. The overall average SCC for Holsteins was 167,000 cells/mL, for Ayrshires was 155,000 cells/mL, and for the Jerseys was 212,000 cells/mL. In all breeds there were no appreciable differences in the relative risk of culling among classes of SCS breed averages (i.e., up to a SCS of 5). However, as the SCS increased beyond the breed average, the relative risk of cows being culled increased considerably. For instance, Holstein, Ayrshire, and Jersey cows with the highest classes of SCS had, respectively, a 4.95, 6.73, and 6.62 times greater risk of being culled than cows with average SCS.  相似文献

Crossbreeding has been shown to improve the longevity of dairy cattle in countries across the world. The aim of this study was to estimate heterosis, breed effects, and genetic parameters for longevity in crossbred dairy cattle among Danish Holstein (DH), Danish Red (DR), and Danish Jersey (DJ) breeds. Data were provided from 119 Danish commercial herds that use systematic crossbreeding (i.e., rotational crossbreeding). Additional data from 11 mixed-breed herds with DH and DJ were included to estimate reliable breed effects for DJ. Survival information on 73,741 cows was analyzed with a linear animal model using the artificial insemination–REML algorithm in the DMU package. Five longevity (L) traits were defined: days from first calving until the end of first lactation or culling (L1), days from first calving until the end of second lactation or culling (L2), days from first calving until the end of third lactation or culling (L3), days from first calving until the end of fourth lactation or culling (L4), and days from first calving until the end of fifth lactation or culling (L5). Heritabilities ranged between 0.022 and 0.090. Additive breed effects in units of days were estimated relative to DH for DR as ?0.5 (L1), +10.5 (L2), +18.5 (L3), +11.9 (L4), and +28.6 (L5), and corresponding figures for DJ were +2.0, +0.5, +14.2, +27.7, and +44.0. Heterosis effects in L1 were low (1.2%) but favorable in crosses between DH and DR, whereas negative heterosis effects were estimated for crosses between DH and DJ (?2.5%) and DR and DJ (?1.2%). The largest heterosis effects for L2, L3, L4, and L5 were found in DH × DR and were favorable (+3.3, +5.7, +7.7, and +8.5%, respectively). Corresponding figures for heterosis effects in DH × DJ and DR × DJ were favorable as well: +2.3, +4.1, +5.6, and +6.2% in DH × DJ and +3.1, +7.3, +6.9, and +7.2% in DR × DJ. The favorable heterosis effects show that crossbreeding is an efficient tool for improving longevity in Danish dairy cattle.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of workability traits like milking speed and temperament on functional longevity of Canadian dairy cattle using a Weibull proportional hazards model. First-lactation data consisted of the following: 1,728,289 and 2,426,123 Holstein cows for milking temperament and milking speed, respectively, from 18,401 herds and sired by 8,248 sires; 39,618 and 60,121 Jersey cows for milking temperament and milking speed, respectively, from 1,845 herds and sired by 2,413 sires; and 54,391 and 94,847 Ayrshire cows for milking temperament and milking speed, respectively, from 1,316 herds and sired by 2,779 sires. Functional longevity was defined as the number of days from the first calving to culling, death, or censoring adjusted for production. Milking temperament and milking speed were recorded on a 1- to 5-point scale from very nervous to very calm and from very slow to very fast, respectively. The statistical model included the effects of stage of lactation; season of production; the annual change in herd size; type of milk recording supervision; age at first calving; effects of milk, fat, and protein yields calculated as within herd-year-parity deviations; herd-year-season of calving; sire; and milking temperament or milking speed class. The relative culling rate was calculated for animals in each milking temperament or milking speed class after accounting for the above-mentioned effects. The study showed that there was a statistically significant association between workability traits and functional longevity. Very nervous cows were 26, 23, and 46% more likely to be culled than very calm cows in Holstein, Ayrshire, and Jersey breeds, respectively. Similarly, very slow milkers were 36, 33, and 28% more likely to be culled than average milkers in Holstein, Ayrshire, and Jersey breeds, respectively. Additionally, very fast milkers were 11, 13, and 15% more likely to be culled than average milkers in Holstein, Ayrshire, and Jersey breeds, respectively. Producers might want to avoid consequences associated with the fast milkers such as udder health problems.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize patterns of energy balance through lactation of cows kept under constant feeding conditions. Danish Holstein, Danish Red, and Jersey cows were studied during consecutive lactations and remained on the same dietary treatment throughout. They were fed a normal (13.55 MJ of digestible energy/kg of dry matter) or a lower energy diet (12.88 MJ of digestible energy/kg of dry matter) ad libitum throughout lactation. Energy balance was calculated using the effective energy (EE) system in such a way that energy balance equated to body energy reserve change. In the EE system the energy values assigned to feeds are directly equivalent to the energy requirements of the animal; 1 MJ of EE supply has the same energy value as 1 MJ of lipid loss from the body. The resulting body energy change data were analyzed using a linear spline model. There was no evidence to suggest that different combinations of breed and parity required different knot placements. The Holstein mobilized significantly more body energy in early lactation than the Danish Red and Jersey breeds. Parity 1 cows mobilized significantly less than parity 2 and 3 cows. There was a significant interaction between breed and parity in the first half of lactation due to parity 1 Jersey cows having a greater mobilization than would be expected of the difference between parities in the other breeds. As lactation progressed, the differences between parities and between breeds decreased. Cows on the higher energy diet had a more positive energy balance. Within breed and parity, the following possible predictors of individual differences in body energy change were examined: fatness-corrected live weight, condition score at calving, and genotype. There was no difference in the predicted cow effect or residual energy balance profile when grouped according to quartiles of corrected live weight or according to condition score at calving. During the period of most negative energy balance (d 14) there was no significant relationship between live weight and intake, suggesting that, within diet type, the systematic patterns of body energy change through lactation in cows that were kept under stable and sufficient nutritional conditions cannot be accounted for by environmental factors such as constrained intake or condition score at calving. Thus, these patterns appear to have a genetic basis. The proportion of the phenotypic variation (remaining after accounting for fixed effects) accounted for by additive genetic effects varied through lactation from 4.2 to 13.0%. Genetic correlations between early and late lactation energy balances were low and close to zero, suggesting that body energy changes in early and late lactation are genetically independent traits.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to identify the most important factors that influence functional survival and to estimate the genetic parameters of functional survival for Canadian dairy cattle. Data were obtained from lactation records extracted for the May 2002 genetic evaluation of Holstein, Jersey, and Ayrshire breeds that calved between July 1, 1985 and April 5, 2002. Analysis was performed using a Weibull proportional hazard model, and the baseline hazard function was defined on a lactation basis instead of the traditional analysis of the whole length of life. The statistical model included the effects of stage of lactation; season of production; the annual change in herd size; type of milk recording supervision; age at first calving; effects of milk, fat, and protein yields calculated within herd-year-parity deviations; and the random effects of herd-year-season of calving and sire. All effects fitted in the model had a significant effect on functional survival of cows in all breeds. Milk yield was by far the most important factor influencing survival, and the hazard increased as the milk production of the cows decreased. The hazard also increased as the fat content increased compared with the average group. Heifers that were older at calving were at higher risk of being culled, and expanding herds were at lower risk of being culled compared with stable herds. More culling was found in unsupervised herds than in supervised herds. The heritability values obtained were 0.14, 0.10, and 0.09 for Holstein, Jersey, and Ayrshire, respectively. Rank correlation between estimated breeding values (EBV) obtained from the current national genetic evaluation of direct herd life and the survival kit used in this study ranged from 0.65 to 0.87, depending on the number of daughters per sire. Estimated genetic trend obtained using the survival kit was overestimated.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared milk spectral data are routinely used for milk quality control and have been revealed to be driven by genetics. This study aimed to (1) estimate heritability for 1,060 wavenumbers in the infrared region from 5,008 to 925 cm?1, (2) estimate genomic correlations between wavenumbers with increased heritability, and (3) compare results between Danish Holstein and Danish Jersey cows. For Danish Holstein, 3,275 cows and 19,656 milk records were available. For Danish Jersey, 3,408 cows and 20,228 milk records were available. We used a hierarchical mixed model, with a Bayesian approach. Heritability of individual wavenumbers ranged from 0.00 to 0.31 in Danish Holstein, and from 0.00 to 0.30 in Danish Jersey. Genomic correlation was calculated between 15 selected wavenumbers, and varied from weak to very strong, in both Danish Holstein and Danish Jersey (0.03 to 0.97, and ?0.11 to ?0.97). Within the 15 selected wavenumbers, a subdivision into 2 groups of wavenumbers was observed, where genomic correlations were negative between groups, and positive within groups. Heritability and genomic correlations were higher in Danish Holstein compared with Danish Jersey, but followed a similar pattern in both breeds. Breed differences were most pronounced in the mid-infrared region that interacts with lactose and the spectral region that interacts with protein. In conclusion, heritability for individual wavenumbers of Fourier transform milk spectra was moderate, and strong genomic correlations were observed between wavenumbers across the spectrum. Heritability and genomic correlations were higher in Danish Holstein, with the strongest breed differences showing in spectral regions interacting with protein or lactose.  相似文献

Culled dairy cows represent a considerable source of meat production, but their carcasses may vary greatly in quality because of the wide variation in the age, stage of lactation, breed, body condition, and other characteristics of the cows at slaughter. However, the effect of crossbreeding on the value of culled cows has so far received little investigation. The aim of this observational study was to compare a range of carcass attributes of cull cows from 3-breed rotational crossbreeding using Viking Red, Montbéliarde (MO), and Holstein (HO) bulls with those of HO purebred cows. Data on 1,814 dairy cows were collected. Cows were reared together in one herd and slaughtered in 4 slaughterhouses. The carcass weight, fleshiness, and fatness scores, the total value, and the price (€/kg) of each cow carcass were recorded. The culling of a few cows in the sample (n = 86) was classified by the farm manager as “urgent” following a diagnosis of injury or sickness, and this information was recorded. Carcass traits were analyzed with a mixed model which included the fixed effects of parity, days in milk, genetic group (purebred HO, 787 cows, and crossbred cows, classified according to the breed of sire within crossbreds, with 309, 428, and 290 cows sired by Viking Red, MO, and HO bulls, respectively), and interactions, and the random effects of month × year of the date of slaughter, and slaughterhouse. Logistic regression was used to investigate the association of parity, days in milk and purebred or crossbred origin with unplanned, “urgent” culling compared with regular culling. Average carcass weight across genetic groups was 297 ± 65 kg, average price €2.03 ± 0.53/kg, and average value €631 ± 269. Compared with HO, crossbred carcasses were 7 to 12% heavier depending on the breed of sire, were graded + 0.12 to + 0.28 units higher for fleshiness and + 0.26 to + 0.30 units higher for fatness, and fetched an 8 to 11% higher price. As a consequence, compared with purebred HO, carcasses from crossbreds had 15 to 24% higher value (€84 to €133 more per cow), with crossbred cows sired by MO showing the greatest values. Moreover, compared with the HO cows, the crossbred cows had a 37% lower risk of being urgently removed from the herd, which raises welfare concerns and may reduce the salvage value of cull cows. Because cull cows represent a supplemental source of income for dairy farmers, the greater overall value of crossbred cull cows should be taken into account in evaluating the economic effectiveness of crossbreeding schemes.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to monitor current and predict future rates of inbreeding in the Danish dairy breeds. Calves born from 1999 until 2003 and registered as Danish Holstein (1,883,983), Danish Jersey (336,966), or Danish Red (261,047) were reference populations. Average complete generation equivalent was approximately 7. For calves born in 2003, average inbreeding was 3.9, 3.4, and 1.4% for Holstein, Jersey, and Danish Red, respectively. In recent years, effective population sizes were 49, 53, and 47, respectively. Based on coancestry statistics, future effective population sizes will be 43, 42, and 51, respectively. The effective number of founders, effective number of ancestors, and effective number of founder genomes were calculated. These measures of genetic diversity were all low for Holstein and Jersey and somewhat larger for Danish Red. The most important ancestors of Danish Holstein were Elevation (13.8%), Chief (10.9%), and Bell (8.5%). The most important ancestor of Danish Red was Momentum (9.4%), a Red Holstein-Friesian. The most important ancestor for Danish Jersey was FYN Lemvig (12.1%) with a large number of progeny in the reference population. The results of this study indicate the necessity for active management of the rate of inbreeding in the future.  相似文献

A coordinated field and chamber experiment assessed breed, sire, and cow differences in body temperatures and respiratory rates. During each of 4 yr, 10 lactating Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, and Jersey cows, 40 animals per yr, were observed in the field on 10 d when the air temperature approached 32 degrees C. For the first 3 yr, each cow also was exposed in a controlled atmospheric chamber at 40 degrees C and 34 mm Hg vapor pressure. Significant breed differences were found for body temperature and respiratory rate. The order of tolerance to hot conditions was Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, and Holstein both in the field and chamber. Significant sire differences, interpreted as genetic, were found for the field measures but not in the chamber. Repeatability of individual field observations for a cow on different days in a year ranged from .38 to .55. Correlations between the average of 10 observations for a cow in the field during a year and the chamber evaluation were positive but lower than the repeatability values. Correlations of ambient temperature with body temperatures and respiratory rates were highest; those for radiation were next, followed by vapor pressure and air movement.  相似文献

Survival analysis in a Weibull proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the impact of somatic cell count (SCC) on the involuntary culling rate of US Holstein and Jersey cows with first calvings from 1990 to 2000. The full data set, consisting of records from 978,043 Holstein and 250,835 Jersey cows, was divided into subsets (5 for Holsteins and 3 for Jerseys) based on herd average lactation SCC values. Functional longevity (also known as herd life or length of productive life) was defined as days from first calving until culling or censoring, after correcting for milk production. Our model included the time-dependent effects of herd-year-season, parity by stage of lactation interaction, within-herd-year quintile ranking for mature equivalent production, and lactation average SCC (rounded to the nearest 50,000 cells/mL), as well as the time-independent effect of age at first calving. Parameters of the Weibull distribution, as well as variance components for herd-year-season effects, were estimated within each group of herds. Mean failure and censoring times decreased as herd average SCC increased, and a nonlinear relationship was observed between SCC and longevity in all groups. The risk of culling for Holstein cows with lactation average SCC > 700,000 cells/mL was 3.4, 2.7, or 2.3 times greater, respectively, than that of Holstein cows with SCC of 200,000 to 250,000 cells/mL in herds with low, medium, or high average SCC. Likewise, the risk of culling for Jersey cows with lactation average SCC > 700,000 cells/mL was 4.0, 2.9, or 2.2 times greater, respectively, than that of Jersey cows with SCC of 200,000 to 250,000 cells/mL in low, medium, or high SCC herds. These trends may reflect more stringent culling of high SCC cows in herds with few mastitis problems. In addition, cows with lactation average SCC <100,000 cells/mL had a slightly higher risk of culling than cows with SCC of 100,000 to 200,000 cells/mL in both breeds, particularly in herds with high average SCC, where exposure to mastitis pathogens was likely.  相似文献

In milk samples from 549 cows of the breeds Danish Jersey, Red Danish Dairy Cattle (RDM), and Black and White Danish Dairy Cattle (SDM) the genetic polymorphisms of the alpha-s1, beta and k-casein and beta=lactoglobulin (beta-Lg) loci were determined by isoelectric focusing in agarose gels. The results of the screening were compared with results obtained by Larsen and Thymann. In addition, the genetic linkage of the three casein loci was studied , and the association between milk protein genotypes and yields in first and second lactations of milk, fat and protein were investigated. The distribution of genotypes of all four milk protein systems was different from breed to breed. For Jersey cows, significant differences in the gene frequencies from the results of the 1966 investigation were found for alpha-s1 and k-casein and beta-Lg. For SDM cows a change in the k-casein frequency had occurred whereas for RDM cows no changes were found. Linkage between some of the casein loci was found within all three breeds. For the RDM breed the possible linkage between alpha-s1-casein and the other caseins could not be tested because nearly all the cows were homozygous for the alpha-s1-casein-B genotypes. beta-Casein genotypes were associated with yield parameters in all breeds. The A2A2 genotype of this protein gave higher yields of milk, fat, and protein in the second lactation than the A1A1 genotype.  相似文献

Genomic predictions have been applied for dairy cattle for more than a decade with great success, but genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) are not widely available for crossbred dairy cows. The large reference populations already in place for genomic evaluations of many pure breeds makes it interesting to use the accurate solutions, in particular the estimated marker effects, from these evaluations for calculation of GEBV for crossbred heifers and cows. Effects of marker alleles in crossbred animals can depend on breed origin of the alleles (BOA). Therefore, our aim was to investigate if reliable GEBV for crossbred dairy cows can be obtained by combining estimated marker effects from purebred evaluations based on BOA. We used data on 5,467 Danish crossbred dairy cows with contributions from Holstein, Jersey, and Red Dairy Cattle breeds. We assessed BOA assignment on their genotypes and found that we could assign 99.3% of the alleles to a definite breed of origin. We compared GEBV for 2 traits, protein yield and interval between first and last insemination of cows, with 2 models that both combine estimated marker effects from the genomic evaluations of the pure breeds: a breed of origin model that accounts for BOA and a breed proportion model that only accounts for genomic breed proportions in the crossbred animals. We accounted for the difference in level between the purebred evaluations by including intercepts in the models based on phenotypic averages. The predictive ability for protein yield was significantly higher from the breed of origin model, 0.45 compared with 0.43 from the breed proportion model. Furthermore, for the breed proportion model, the GEBVs had level bias, which made comparison across groups with different breed composition skewed. We therefore concluded that reliable genomic predictions for crossbred dairy cows can be obtained by combining estimated marker effects from the genomic evaluations of purebreds using a model that accounts for BOA.  相似文献

Results of a producer survey regarding crossbreeding on US dairy farms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Comprehensive surveys were sent to 528 US dairy producers who are currently practicing crossbreeding in their herds. Fifty usable surveys were returned, and the resulting data included qualitative responses regarding facilities, milk recording plans, milk pricing, crossbreeding goals, breed selection, advantages, disadvantages, and future plans. Quantitative variables included producer scores on a 1 to 5 scale for questions regarding ability to fit into the free stalls and milking parlor, milk volume, component percentages, involuntary culling rate, conception rate, calving difficulty, calf mortality, and prices for breeding stock, cull cows, market steers, and bull calves. The most common first generation crosses involved Jersey and Brown Swiss bulls mated to Holstein cows, and backcrosses to one of these parental breeds were most common in the next generation. Producers who responded to this survey desired, and indicated that they achieved, improvements in fertility, calving ease, longevity, and component percentages through crossbreeding. Respondents indicated that crosses involving the Jersey and Brown Swiss breeds had a clear advantage in longevity relative to purebred Holsteins, and conception rates for crosses of Jersey or Brown Swiss sires on Holstein cows were similar to the (high) conception rates typically achieved in purebred Jersey matings. Respondents also indicated that milk composition was improved in the crossbred cattle, but producers cited some difficulties in marketing crossbred breeding stock and bull calves, and noted that the lack of uniformity within the milking herd created management challenges. Based on results of this survey, it appears that crossbreeding can improve the health, fertility, longevity, and profitability of commercial dairy cattle. However, further research is needed regarding specific heterosis estimates for functional traits in crosses involving each of the major dairy breeds, and improvements are needed in systems for recording the ancestry and breed composition of crossbred animals.  相似文献

Breed additive, maternal, and heterozygotic effects on 11 monthly postpartum body weights, average size, weight gain, age at first calving, and days open were estimated by linear regression analyses from records of 680 purebred and crossbred animals. Calving year, age, and milk yield were significant environmental effects. Positive regressions of age on body weights indicated late calving cows were heaviest postpartum and had most days open. Negative regressions of milk yield on weight gain and postpartum weight showed greatest losses of weight associated with highest yields. There were breed differences in growth; purebreds highest to lowest were Brown Swiss, Holstein, Red Dane, Jersey, and Ayrshire and for weight gain, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire, and for weight gain, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire, Jersey, Holsteins, and Red Dane. Crosses were superior to purebreds in these traits. Additive effects of Holstein were greater than Ayrshire, Jersey, and Red Dane for postpartum body weights and average size. All constants for heterozygotic effect combinations were significant for postpartum weights and average size. Heterozygosity effects increased in magnitude with advancing lactation. Generally, age at first calving and postpartum interval to conception reflected little heterozygotic or maternal effects. There was some indication of breed differences in mean and additive effects for age at first calving.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the level of inbreeding and its relationship to the functional survival of Canadian dairy breeds by using a Weibull proportional hazard model. Data consisted of records from 72,385 cows in 1,505 herds from 2,499 sires for Jerseys, 112,723 cows in 1,482 herds from 2,926 sires for Ayrshires, and 1,977,311 cows in 17,182 herds from 8,261 sires for Holsteins. Longevity was defined as the number of days from first calving to culling, death, or censoring. Inbreeding coefficients (F) were grouped into 7 classes (F = 0, 0 < F < 3.125, 3.125 ≤ F < 6.25, 6.25 ≤ F <12.5, 12.5 ≤ F < 18.25, 18.25 ≤ F < 25.0, and F ≥ 25.0%). The statistical model included the effects of stage of lactation, season of production, the annual change in herd size, type of milk recording supervision, age at first calving, effects of milk, fat, and protein yields calculated as within herd-year-parity deviations, herd-year-season of calving, inbreeding, and sire. The relative culling rate was calculated for animals in each class after accounting for the above-mentioned effects. A trend toward increased risk of culling among more inbred animals was observed for all breeds. Little difference in survival was observed for cows with 0 < F <12.5%. The relative risk ratios (relative to F = 0) for cows with inbreeding coefficients up to 12.5% were 1.19, 1.16, and 1.14 for Jersey, Ayrshire, and Holstein cows, respectively. The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters and individual and maternal breed, heterosis, and recombination loss effects for milk production and fertility traits of Holstein Friesian (F), Jersey (J), and crossbred Holstein Friesian and Jersey (F × J) cows milked once daily (OAD) or twice daily (TAD) in New Zealand. Data on 278,776 lactations from 30,217 OAD and 170,680 TAD milking cows across 644 spring-calving herds were available. Genetic parameters and individual and maternal breed, heterosis, and recombination loss estimates were obtained from univariate animal models. Heritability and repeatability estimates for milk production, milk composition, and fertility traits were consistent across the milking frequencies. Heritability estimates for yields of milk, fat, protein, and lactose varied between 0.21 and 0.29 in OAD and TAD. Heritability estimates for fertility traits ranged from 0.01 to 0.08 in both populations, and estimates were slightly greater in TAD than OAD milking cows. In both milking populations, individual breed effects for yields were in favor of F cows; however, maternal breed effects for yields were in favor of J dams. Jersey cows were more fertile than the F cows in both milking populations, but maternal breed effects for fertility traits were in favor of F dams. Individual heterosis effects were favorable for all traits and were consistent across milking regimens. Crossbred F × J cows had significantly shorter intervals from start of mating to first service and from start of mating to conception, and a higher proportion of 3-wk submission, 3-wk in calf, and 3-wk calving relative to the average of purebred F and J cows. Recombination loss effects were not always unfavorable for production and fertility traits, but most estimates were small with larger standard errors. Favorable maternal heterosis effects were associated with production traits in both milking systems, but maternal heterosis effects were less likely to influence reproductive performance.  相似文献
