A graph is König-Egerváry if the size of a minimum vertex cover equals that of a maximum matching in the graph. These graphs have been studied extensively from a graph-theoretic point of view. In this paper, we introduce and study the algorithmic complexity of finding König-Egerváry subgraphs of a given graph. In particular, given a graph G and a nonnegative integer k, we are interested in the following questions:

    does there exist a set of k vertices (edges) whose deletion makes the graph König-Egerváry?
     
  2. 2.
    does there exist a set of k vertices (edges) that induce a König-Egerváry subgraph?
     
We show that these problems are NP-complete and study their complexity from the points of view of approximation and parameterized complexity. Towards this end, we first study the algorithmic complexity of Above Guarantee Vertex Cover, where one is interested in minimizing the additional number of vertices needed beyond the maximum matching size for the vertex cover. Further, while studying the parameterized complexity of the problem of deleting k vertices to obtain a König-Egerváry graph, we show a number of interesting structural results on matchings and vertex covers which could be useful in other contexts.

A path in G is a hamiltonian path if it contains all vertices of G. A graph G is hamiltonian connected if there exists a hamiltonian path between any two distinct vertices of G. The degree of a vertex u in G is the number of vertices of G adjacent to u. We denote by δ(G) the minimum degree of vertices of G. A graph G is conditional k edge-fault tolerant hamiltonian connected if GF is hamiltonian connected for every FE(G) with |F|?k and δ(GF)?3. The conditional edge-fault tolerant hamiltonian connectivity is defined as the maximum integer k such that G is k edge-fault tolerant conditional hamiltonian connected if G is hamiltonian connected and is undefined otherwise. A k-core of a graph is a maximal connected subgraph in which every vertex is connected to at least k vertices in the subgraph. k-core decomposition is often used in large-scale network analysis, such as community detection, protein function prediction, visualization, and solving NP-hard problems on real networks efficiently, like maximal clique finding. In many real-world applications, networks change over time. As a result, it is essential to develop efficient incremental algorithms for dynamic graph data. In this paper, we propose a suite of incremental k-core decomposition algorithms for dynamic graph data. These algorithms locate a small subgraph that is guaranteed to contain the list of vertices whose maximum k-core values have changed and efficiently process this subgraph to update the k-core decomposition. We present incremental algorithms for both insertion and deletion operations, and propose auxiliary vertex state maintenance techniques that can further accelerate these operations. Our results show a significant reduction in runtime compared to non-incremental alternatives. We illustrate the efficiency of our algorithms on different types of real and synthetic graphs, at varying scales. For a graph of 16 million vertices, we observe relative throughputs reaching a million times, relative to the non-incremental algorithms.  相似文献

The distance graph G(n, 2, 1) is a graph where vertices are identified with twoelement subsets of {1, 2,..., n}, and two vertices are connected by an edge whenever the corresponding subsets have exactly one common element. A random subgraph G p (n, 2, 1) in the Erd?os–Rényi model is obtained by selecting each edge of G(n, 2, 1) with probability p independently of other edges. An important result in the study of polynomial-time preprocessing shows that there is an algorithm which given an instance (G,k) of Vertex Cover outputs an equivalent instance (G′,k′) in polynomial time with the guarantee that G′ has at most 2k′ vertices (and thus $\mathcal{O}((k')^{2})$ edges) with k′≤k. Using the terminology of parameterized complexity we say that k-Vertex Cover has a kernel with 2k vertices. There is complexity-theoretic evidence that both 2k vertices and Θ(k 2) edges are optimal for the kernel size. In this paper we consider the Vertex Cover problem with a different parameter, the size $\mathop{\mathrm{\mbox{\textsc{fvs}}}}(G)$ of a minimum feedback vertex set for G. This refined parameter is structurally smaller than the parameter k associated to the vertex covering number $\mathop{\mathrm{\mbox {\textsc{vc}}}}(G)$ since $\mathop{\mathrm{\mbox{\textsc{fvs}}}}(G)\leq\mathop{\mathrm{\mbox{\textsc{vc}}}}(G)$ and the difference can be arbitrarily large. We give a kernel for Vertex Cover with a number of vertices that is cubic in $\mathop{\mathrm{\mbox{\textsc{fvs}}}}(G)$ : an instance (G,X,k) of Vertex Cover, where X is a feedback vertex set for G, can be transformed in polynomial time into an equivalent instance (G′,X′,k′) such that |V(G′)|≤2k and $|V(G')| \in\mathcal{O}(|X'|^{3})$ . A similar result holds when the feedback vertex set X is not given along with the input. In sharp contrast we show that the Weighted Vertex Cover problem does not have a polynomial kernel when parameterized by the cardinality of a given vertex cover of the graph unless NP ? coNP/poly and the polynomial hierarchy collapses to the third level.  相似文献

In the Parameterized Connected Dominating Set problem the input consists of a graph G and a positive integer k, and the question is whether there is a set S of at most k vertices in G—a connected dominating set of G—such that (i) S is a dominating set of G, and (ii) the subgraph G[S] induced by S is connected; the parameter is k. The underlying decision problem is a basic connectivity problem which is long known to be NP-complete, and it has been extensively studied using several algorithmic approaches. Parameterized Connected Dominating Set is W[2]-hard, and therefore it is unlikely (Downey and Fellows, Parameterized Complexity, Springer, 1999) that the problem has fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithms or polynomial kernels in graphs in general. We investigate the effect of excluding short cycles, as subgraphs, on the kernelization complexity of Parameterized Connected Dominating Set. The girth of a graph G is the length of a shortest cycle in G. It turns out that the Parameterized Connected Dominating Set problem is hard on graphs with small cycles, and becomes progressively easier as the girth increases. More precisely, we obtain the following kernelization landscape: Parameterized Connected Dominating Set
  • does not have a kernel of any size on graphs of girth three or four (since the problem is W[2]-hard);
  • admits a kernel of size 2 k k 3k on graphs of girth at least five;
  • has no polynomial kernel (unless the Polynomial Hierarchy collapses to the third level) on graphs of girth at most six, and,
  • has a cubic ( $\mathcal {O}(k^{3})$ ) vertex kernel on graphs of girth at least seven.
While there is a large and growing collection of parameterized complexity results available for problems on graph classes characterized by excluded minors, our results add to the very few known in the field for graph classes characterized by excluded subgraphs.  相似文献

The Planar Feedback Vertex Set problem asks whether an n-vertex planar graph contains at most k vertices meeting all its cycles. The Face Cover problem asks whether all vertices of a plane graph G lie on the boundary of at most k faces of G. Standard techniques from parameterized algorithm design indicate that both problems can be solved by sub-exponential parameterized algorithms (where k is the parameter). In this paper we improve the algorithmic analysis of both problems by proving a series of combinatorial results relating the branchwidth of planar graphs with their face cover. Combining this fact with duality properties of branchwidth, allows us to derive analogous results on feedback vertex set. As a consequence, it follows that Planar Feedback Vertex Set and Face Cover can be solved in \(O(2^{15.11\cdot\sqrt{k}}+n^{2})\) and \(O(2^{10.1\cdot\sqrt {k}}+n^{2})\) steps, respectively.  相似文献

The Contractibility problem takes as input two graphs G and H, and the task is to decide whether H can be obtained from G by a sequence of edge contractions. The Induced Minor and Induced Topological Minor problems are similar, but the first allows both edge contractions and vertex deletions, whereas the latter allows only vertex deletions and vertex dissolutions. All three problems are NP-complete, even for certain fixed graphs H. We show that these problems can be solved in polynomial time for every fixed H when the input graph G is chordal. Our results can be considered tight, since these problems are known to be W[1]-hard on chordal graphs when parameterized by the size of H. To solve Contractibility and Induced Minor, we define and use a generalization of the classic Disjoint Paths problem, where we require the vertices of each of the k paths to be chosen from a specified set. We prove that this variant is NP-complete even when k=2, but that it is polynomial-time solvable on chordal graphs for every fixed k. Our algorithm for Induced Topological Minor is based on another generalization of Disjoint Paths called Induced Disjoint Paths, where the vertices from different paths may no longer be adjacent. We show that this problem, which is known to be NP-complete when k=2, can be solved in polynomial time on chordal graphs even when k is part of the input. Our results fit into the general framework of graph containment problems, where the aim is to decide whether a graph can be modified into another graph by a sequence of specified graph operations. Allowing combinations of the four well-known operations edge deletion, edge contraction, vertex deletion, and vertex dissolution results in the following ten containment relations: (induced) minor, (induced) topological minor, (induced) subgraph, (induced) spanning subgraph, dissolution, and contraction. Our results, combined with existing results, settle the complexity of each of the ten corresponding containment problems on chordal graphs.  相似文献

Processor (vertex) faults and link (edge) faults may happen when a network is used, and it is meaningful to consider networks (graphs) with faulty processors and/or links. A k-regular Hamiltonian and Hamiltonian connected graph G is optimal fault-tolerant Hamiltonian and Hamiltonian connected if G remains Hamiltonian after removing at most k?2 vertices and/or edges and remains Hamiltonian connected after removing at most k?3 vertices and/or edges. In this paper, we investigate in constructing optimal fault-tolerant Hamiltonian and optimal fault-tolerant Hamiltonian connected graphs. Therefore, some of the generalized hypercubes, twisted-cubes, crossed-cubes, and Möbius cubes are optimal fault-tolerant Hamiltonian and optimal fault-tolerant Hamiltonian connected.  相似文献

Vertex deletion and edge deletion problems play a central role in parameterized complexity. Examples include classical problems like Feedback Vertex Set, Odd Cycle Transversal, and Chordal Deletion. The study of analogous edge contraction problems has so far been left largely unexplored from a parameterized perspective. We consider two basic problems of this type: Tree Contraction and Path Contraction. These two problems take as input an undirected graph G on n vertices and an integer k, and the task is to determine whether we can obtain a tree or a path, respectively, by a sequence of at most k edge contractions in G. For Tree Contraction, we present a randomized 4 k ? n O(1) time polynomial-space algorithm, as well as a deterministic 4.98 k ? n O(1) time algorithm, based on a variant of the color coding technique of Alon, Yuster and Zwick. We also present a deterministic 2 k+o(k)+n O(1) time algorithm for Path Contraction. Furthermore, we show that Path Contraction has a kernel with at most 5k+3 vertices, while Tree Contraction does not have a polynomial kernel unless NP ? coNP/poly. We find the latter result surprising because of the connection between Tree Contraction and Feedback Vertex Set, which is known to have a kernel with 4k 2 vertices.  相似文献

In the framework of parameterized complexity, exploring how one parameter affects the complexity of a different parameterized (or unparameterized problem) is of general interest. A well-developed example is the investigation of how the parameter treewidth influences the complexity of (other) graph problems. The reason why such investigations are of general interest is that real-world input distributions for computational problems often inherit structure from the natural computational processes that produce the problem instances (not necessarily in obvious, or well-understood ways). The max leaf number ml(G) of a connected graph G is the maximum number of leaves in a spanning tree for G. Exploring questions analogous to the well-studied case of treewidth, we can ask: how hard is it to solve 3-Coloring, Hamilton Path, Minimum Dominating Set, Minimum Bandwidth or many other problems, for graphs of bounded max leaf number? What optimization problems are W[1]-hard under this parameterization? We do two things:

    We describe much improved FPT algorithms for a large number of graph problems, for input graphs G for which ml(G)≤k, based on the polynomial-time extremal structure theory canonically associated to this parameter. We consider improved algorithms both from the point of view of kernelization bounds, and in terms of improved fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) runtimes O *(f(k)).

    The way that we obtain these concrete algorithmic results is general and systematic. We describe the approach, and raise programmatic questions.

The Pathwidth One Vertex Deletion (POVD) problem asks whether, given an undirected graph?G and an integer k, one can delete at most k vertices from?G so that the remaining graph has pathwidth at most 1. The question can be considered as a natural variation of the extensively studied Feedback Vertex Set (FVS) problem, where the deletion of at most k vertices has to result in the remaining graph having treewidth at most 1 (i.e., being a forest). Recently Philip et?al. (WG, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol.?6410, pp.?196?C207, 2010) initiated the study of the parameterized complexity of POVD, showing a quartic kernel and an algorithm which runs in time 7 k n O(1). In this article we improve these results by showing a quadratic kernel and an algorithm with time complexity 4.65 k n O(1), thus obtaining almost tight kernelization bounds when compared to the general result of Dell and van Melkebeek (STOC, pp.?251?C260, ACM, New York, 2010). Techniques used in the kernelization are based on the quadratic kernel for FVS, due to Thomassé (ACM Trans. Algorithms 6(2), 2010).  相似文献

We give improved parameterized algorithms for two “edge” problems MAXCUT and MAXDAG, where the solution sought is a subset of edges. MAXCUT of a graph is a maximum set of edges forming a bipartite subgraph of the given graph. On the other hand, MAXDAG of a directed graph is a set of arcs of maximum size such that the graph induced on these arcs is acyclic. Our algorithms are obtained through new kernelization and efficient exact algorithms for the optimization versions of the problems. More precisely our results include:
(i)
a kernel with at most αk vertices and βk edges for MAXCUT. Here 0<α?1 and 1<β?2. Values of α and β depends on the number of vertices and the edges in the graph;
(ii)
a kernel with at most 4k/3 vertices and 2k edges for MAXDAG;
(iii)
an O(k1.2418) parameterized algorithm for MAXCUT in undirected graphs. This improves the O(k1.4143)1 algorithm presented in [E. Prieto, The method of extremal structure on the k-maximum cut problem, in: The Proceedings of Computing: The Australasian Theory Symposium (CATS), 2005, pp. 119-126];
(iv)
an O(n2) algorithm for optimization version of MAXDAG in directed graphs. This is the first such algorithm to the best of our knowledge;
(v)
an O(k2) parameterized algorithm for MAXDAG in directed graphs. This improves the previous best of O(k4) presented in [V. Raman, S. Saurabh, Parameterized algorithms for feedback set problems and their duals in tournaments, Theoretical Computer Science 351 (3) (2006) 446-458];
(vi)
an O(k16) parameterized algorithm to determine whether an oriented graph having m arcs has an acyclic subgraph with at least m/2+k arcs. This improves the O(k2) algorithm given in [V. Raman, S. Saurabh, Parameterized algorithms for feedback set problems and their duals in tournaments, Theoretical Computer Science 351 (3) (2006) 446-458].
In addition, we show that if a directed graph has minimum out degree at least f(n) (some function of n) then Directed Feedback Arc Set problem is fixed parameter tractable. The parameterized complexity of Directed Feedback Arc Set is a well-known open problem.  相似文献

We study the Cutwidth problem, where the input is a graph G, and the objective is find a linear layout of the vertices that minimizes the maximum number of edges intersected by any vertical line inserted between two consecutive vertices. We give an algorithm for Cutwidth with running time O(2 k n O(1)). Here k is the size of a minimum vertex cover of the input graph G, and n is the number of vertices in G. Our algorithm gives an O(2 n/2 n O(1)) time algorithm for Cutwidth on bipartite graphs as a corollary. This is the first non-trivial exact exponential time algorithm for Cutwidth on a graph class where the problem remains NP-complete. Additionally, we show that Cutwidth parameterized by the size of the minimum vertex cover of the input graph does not admit a polynomial kernel unless NP?coNP/poly. Our kernelization lower bound contrasts with the recent results of Bodlaender et al. (ICALP, Springer, Berlin, 2011; SWAT, Springer, Berlin, 2012) that both Treewidth and Pathwidth parameterized by vertex cover do admit polynomial kernels.  相似文献

Consider the NP-hard problem of, given a simple graph?G, to find a series-parallel subgraph of?G with the maximum number of edges. The algorithm that, given a connected graph?G, outputs a spanning tree of?G, is a $\frac{1}{2}$ -approximation. Indeed, if n is the number of vertices in G, any spanning tree in G has?n?1 edges and any series-parallel graph on?n vertices has at most?2n?3 edges. We present a $\frac{7}{12}$ -approximation for this problem and results showing the limits of our approach.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph G with edge costs and a specified set of terminals, let the density of any subgraph be the ratio of its cost to the number of terminals it contains. If G is 2-connected, does it contain smaller 2-connected subgraphs of density comparable to that of?G? We answer this question in the affirmative by giving an algorithm to pruneG and find such subgraphs of any desired size, incurring only a logarithmic factor increase in density (plus a small additive term). We apply our pruning techniques to give algorithms for two NP-Hard problems on finding large 2-vertex-connected subgraphs of low cost; no previous approximation algorithm was known for either problem. In the k-2VC problem, we are given an undirected graph G with edge costs and an integer k; the goal is to find a minimum-cost 2-vertex-connected subgraph of G containing at least k vertices. In the Budget-2VC problem, we are given a graph G with edge costs, and a budget B; the goal is to find a 2-vertex-connected subgraph H of G with total edge cost at most B that maximizes the number of vertices in H. We describe an O(log?nlog?k) approximation for the k-2VC problem, and a bicriteria approximation for the Budget-2VC problem that gives an $O(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\log^{2} n)$ approximation, while violating the budget by a factor of at most 2+ε.  相似文献

In the k-Feedback Arc/Vertex Set problem we are given a directed graph D and a positive integer k and the objective is to check whether it is possible to delete at most k arcs/vertices from D to make it acyclic. Dom et al. (J. Discrete Algorithm 8(1):76–86, 2010) initiated a study of the Feedback Arc Set problem on bipartite tournaments (k-FASBT) in the realm of parameterized complexity. They showed that k-FASBT can be solved in time O(3.373 k n 6) on bipartite tournaments having n vertices. However, until now there was no known polynomial sized problem kernel for k-FASBT. In this paper we obtain a cubic vertex kernel for k-FASBT. This completes the kernelization picture for the Feedback Arc/Vertex Set problem on tournaments and bipartite tournaments, as for all other problems polynomial kernels were known before. We obtain our kernel using a non-trivial application of “independent modules” which could be of independent interest.  相似文献
