The objective was to quantify the effect of days to conception (days open) in the previous parity on the risk of death and live culling (excluding the disposal reasons “dairy purposes” and “death”) in the proximity of a subsequent calving in Holstein cows enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement program. After edits, 2,075,834 observations of cows calving between 2001 and 2007 in herds located in 36 US states primarily east of the Mississippi river were available. The period at risk included the time between 14 d before expected calving to 60 d after calving. Days open were categorized in 6 periods: 0 to 45 d, 46 to 90 d, 91 to 150 d, 151 to 210 d, 211 to 300 d, and 301 to 600 d after calving in the previous parity. Other variables of interest included parity, length of the dry period before calving, relative last test-day milk yield before dry off before calving, season of calving, and the cow's relative 305-d mature equivalent (305ME) milk yield before calving. Control variables were calving year, herd size, and relative herd 305ME milk yield. All variables were categorized. Generalized mixed models were used and included herd as random effect. Interactions between days open and the variables of interest were included in the models. Least squares means for the risk of death between −14 and 60 d after calving were 2.5, 2.5, 2.9, 3.6, 4.4, and 5.8% for increasing categories of days open. Similarly, for the same categories, least squares means for the risk of live culling were 4.5, 5.0, 5.4, 6.1, 6.9, and 8.1%. The effect of days open on the risk of death was slightly greater for third-parity cows, for long dry periods, for cows with low test-day milk yield before dry off before calving, for spring calvings, and for intermediate relative 305ME milk yield before calving. Similar trends for these interactions were found for the risk of live culling, except for relative 305ME milk yield before calving, where the effect of days open was more pronounced for high-producing cows. In conclusion, increased days open in the previous parity were associated with a greater risk of death and live culling around calving.  相似文献

The objective was to describe the dynamics of culling risk with disposal codes for Holstein dairy cows reported by herds enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement program. Dairy producers could report 1 of 9 possible disposal codes or forego reporting a code. After edits, 3,629,002 lactation records were available for cows calving between 2001 and 2006 in 2,054 herds located in 38 states primarily east of the Mississippi river. The distribution of culled cows by disposal code was estimated by parity, days after calving, pregnancy status, cow-relative 305-d mature equivalent milk yield, herd-relative 305-d mature equivalent milk yield, and season. Of all herds, 57% reported all 8 different disposal codes excluding the codes dairy purposes and reason not reported. Hazard (risk) functions were calculated by parity, from 1 to 520 d since calving for open cows and from 1 to 280 d since conception for pregnant cows. Annualized live culling rate and death rate (reported code was death) were 25.1 and 6.6%, respectively. The primary disposal code was died (20.6% of all culling), followed by reproduction (17.7%), injury/other (14.3%), and low production and mastitis (both 12.1%). The risk of culling with various disposal codes varied with stage of lactation. Died and reproduction were the most frequently reported codes for cows leaving the herd during early and late lactation, respectively. Early lactation was also a critical period for culling with the disposal codes injury/other and disease, and the risk increased with days after calving for the codes low production and reproduction. The risk of culling with the disposal code died showed the greatest seasonal pattern with increased risk of death in spring and summer. A negative association was found between annualized live culling and death rates within herds. Compared with open cows, pregnant cows had a lower risk of culling with all reported disposal codes. In addition, the risk of culling was lower in high-producing cows with all disposal codes. In conclusion, the risk for culling by disposal code varied by parity, stage of lactation, season, pregnancy status, and milk yield.  相似文献

Two retrospective studies examining data of 7,500 lactating cows from a single herd were performed with the objective of evaluating the long-term effects of clinical disease during the early postpartum period on milk production, reproduction, and culling of dairy cows through 305 days in milk (DIM). In the first study, data regarding health, milk production, reproduction, and culling of 5,085 cows were summarized. Cows were classified according to incidence of clinical problem (metritis, mastitis, lameness, digestive problem, or respiratory problem) during the first 21 DIM (ClinD21). During 305 d of lactation, cows that had ClinD21 produced, on average, 410 kg less milk, 17 kg less fat, and 12 kg less protein compared with cows that did not have ClinD21 (NoClinD21). Although the interval to first breeding was not different between groups of interest, pregnancy rate through 305 DIM was lower in cows that had ClinD21 [adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) = 0.81]. When individual breedings were analyzed, cows that had ClinD21 presented lower rates of pregnancy per breeding for breedings performed before 150 DIM, reduced numbers of calving per breeding for breedings performed before 200 DIM, and greater number of pregnancy losses for all breedings performed through 305 DIM. The rate of culling from calving through 305 DIM was higher in cows that had a single ClinD21 (AHR = 1.79) and in cows that had multiple ClinD21 (AHR = 3.06), which resulted in a greater proportion of cows leaving the herd by 305 DIM (NoClinD21 = 22.6%; single ClinD21 = 35.7%; multiple ClinD21 = 53.8%). In the second study, data regarding postpartum health and 305-d yields of milk, fat, and protein were collected from 2,415 primiparous cows that had genomic testing information. Genomic estimated breeding values (EBV) were used to predict 305-d yields of milk, fat, and protein. Genomic EBV and predicted yields of milk, fat, and protein did not differ between cows that had ClinD21 and those that did not have ClinD21. In contrast, the observed 305-d yields of milk, fat, and protein were reduced by 345, 10, and 10 kg, respectively, in cows that had ClinD21 compared with cows that did not have ClinD21. We conclude that clinical disease diagnosed and treated during the first 21 DIM has long-term effects on lactation performance, reproduction, and culling of dairy cows, which contribute to detrimental consequences of health problems on sustainability of dairy herds. Replication of our studies in multiple herds will be important to confirm our findings in a larger population.  相似文献

The objective of our study was to identify cow-level factors associated with subclinical hypocalcemia at calving (SCH) in multiparous Jersey cows. A total of 598 Jersey and 218 Jersey × Holstein crossbreed cows from 2 commercial dairy herds were enrolled in a retrospective cohort study. Blood samples to determine total Ca concentration were collected from the coccygeal vessels at 3 h 19 min (±2 h 33 min) after calving. We used 2 serum Ca concentration thresholds to define SCH: <2.00 mmol/L (SCH-2.00) and <2.12 mmol/L (SCH-2.12). We evaluated the association of cow-level factors with SCH with multivariable Poisson regression models. Variables evaluated for association with SCH were herd; parity (2, 3, and ≥4); breed; previous lactation length and 305-d mature-equivalent milk yield; previous lactation first test milk yield and last test somatic cell count; lengths of calving interval, gestation, dry, and close-up periods; body condition and locomotion scores at calving; calving ease; and calf sex for singletons. We categorized continuous variables into quartiles (≤25th percentile, interquartile range and ≥75th percentile). The prevalence of SCH among Jersey cows was 40 (SCH-2.00) and 64% (SCH-2.12). Jersey cows of higher parity had greater risk of SCH-2.00 and SCH-2.12. The risk of SCH-2.12 was higher after birthing male calves. We also found a tendency for previous lactation length and previous lactation 305-d mature-equivalent milk yield effect to affect risk of SCH-2.12. The risk of SCH-2.12 was lower for cows that had a previous lactation length shorter than the 25th percentile compared with cows that had a previous lactation length within the interquartile range. The risk of SCH-2.12 was higher for cows that had a previous lactation 305-d mature-equivalent milk yield below the 25th percentile compared with cows that had a previous lactation 305-d mature-equivalent milk yield above the 75th percentile. Also, Jersey × Holstein crossbreed was associated with increased risk of SCH-2.00. In the multivariable analysis, we observed no association between SCH and previous lactation first test milk yield; last test somatic cell count; lengths of calving interval, gestation, dry, and close-up periods; body condition and locomotion scores at calving; and calving ease. Our study identified parity, breed, calf sex, previous lactation length, and previous lactation 305-d mature-equivalent milk yield as cow-level factors associated with SCH in multiparous Jersey cows.  相似文献

The hypothesis was that dairy cows housed for 1 mo after calving in a separate group with herd mates would produce more milk and would be healthier than cows integrated in a group of all lactating cows immediately after calving. The experiment was conducted with 489 cows in 6 commercial loose-housing dairy herds where cows were randomly selected for treatment (separate housing) or control. Cows selected for treatment were housed for 1 mo after calving in a separate section, and controls were housed in the remaining section of the barn for lactating cows. Data were compared for milk yield, somatic cell count, medical treatments, reproductive performance, culling, mortality, and clinical observation of scores for body condition, leg and udder hygiene, lameness, hock lesions, other cutaneous lesions, vaginal discharge, and condition of the hair coat. The analysis of the effect of separate housing showed that primiparous cows produced more milk [approximately 230 kg of energy-corrected milk from 0 to 305 d in milk (DIM)], whereas multiparous and especially parity 3+ cows produced less milk (approximately 394 kg of energy-corrected milk from 0 to 305 DIM) during the lactation. Separate housing had no effect on mortality or reproductive efficiency. In primiparous cows, the number of medical treatments for ketosis was reduced by separate housing [hazard ratio 0.33, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.13-0.83]. Clinical evaluations showed that separate housing decreased the scores for hock lesions in cows at 0 to 30 DIM (odds ratio 0.41, CI: 0.19-0.91), whereas the scoring of leg cleanliness showed more dirty legs in separated cows at 0 to 30 DIM (odds ratio 3.61, CI: 2.01-6.47) compared with cows integrated into the herd immediately. The body condition score in separated cows was reduced from 0 to 30 DIM (score reduced by 0.16, CI: 0.07-0.25) and from 31 to 60 DIM (score reduced by 0.13, CI: 0.04-0.23) compared with cows integrated immediately. We concluded that separate housing for 1 mo after calving increased milk yield in primiparous cows but not in multiparous cows, which produced less milk. The hypothesis about fewer health problems could only be confirmed with regard to fewer primiparous cows being treated for ketosis.  相似文献

Test day models were used to estimate lactation curves for milk, fat, protein, fat percentage, and protein percentage and to study the influence of age, season, and herd productivity on Holstein lactation curves. Random effects of lactation within herd and fixed effects of herd test date were absorbed. Fixed effects of cow's age on test day and either DIM (57 divisions) by parity (1, 2, greater than or equal to 3) class or season of calving (winter or summer) by DIM by parity class were estimated. Lactation curves for yield traits derived from DIM solutions were flatter for first versus later lactation, even without addition of age effects. Differences between lactation curves for the two seasons were slight, suggesting that most observed seasonal differences are caused by seasonal productivity accounted for by herd test date effects. At peak, winter calving cows yielded slightly more milk of similar fat percentage but of lower protein percentage than those calving in summer. Data were also partitioned into nine subsets based on rolling herd milk and fat percentage. Lactation curves for yield traits, but not percentage traits, varied with rolling herd milk. Lactation curves for fat yield and percentage varied with rolling herd fat percentage.  相似文献

Survival analysis in a Weibull proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the impact of somatic cell count (SCC) on the involuntary culling rate of US Holstein and Jersey cows with first calvings from 1990 to 2000. The full data set, consisting of records from 978,043 Holstein and 250,835 Jersey cows, was divided into subsets (5 for Holsteins and 3 for Jerseys) based on herd average lactation SCC values. Functional longevity (also known as herd life or length of productive life) was defined as days from first calving until culling or censoring, after correcting for milk production. Our model included the time-dependent effects of herd-year-season, parity by stage of lactation interaction, within-herd-year quintile ranking for mature equivalent production, and lactation average SCC (rounded to the nearest 50,000 cells/mL), as well as the time-independent effect of age at first calving. Parameters of the Weibull distribution, as well as variance components for herd-year-season effects, were estimated within each group of herds. Mean failure and censoring times decreased as herd average SCC increased, and a nonlinear relationship was observed between SCC and longevity in all groups. The risk of culling for Holstein cows with lactation average SCC > 700,000 cells/mL was 3.4, 2.7, or 2.3 times greater, respectively, than that of Holstein cows with SCC of 200,000 to 250,000 cells/mL in herds with low, medium, or high average SCC. Likewise, the risk of culling for Jersey cows with lactation average SCC > 700,000 cells/mL was 4.0, 2.9, or 2.2 times greater, respectively, than that of Jersey cows with SCC of 200,000 to 250,000 cells/mL in low, medium, or high SCC herds. These trends may reflect more stringent culling of high SCC cows in herds with few mastitis problems. In addition, cows with lactation average SCC <100,000 cells/mL had a slightly higher risk of culling than cows with SCC of 100,000 to 200,000 cells/mL in both breeds, particularly in herds with high average SCC, where exposure to mastitis pathogens was likely.  相似文献

Lameness is a persistent and underreported health and welfare problem in the dairy industry, resulting in reduced cow performance and profitability as well as early culling. The study objectives were (1) to quantify the impact of the first instance of lameness, at different stages of lactation, on production and economic performance, and (2) to further quantify the impacts of the first instance of lameness when only cows that remain in the herd for at least 100 d in milk (DIM) and those that remain for 305 DIM are included in the analysis. A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted using pre-existing data from animal health records and Dairy Herd Improvement Association records. Data were edited based on selected inclusion criteria, yielding a data set containing records from 15,159 first-lactation Holstein cows from 120 herds with year of first calving between 2003 and 2014. Lame cows were assigned to 1 of 4 groups based on when in the lactation the first event of lameness occurred: transition (1–21 DIM), early lactation (22–100 DIM), mid-lactation (101–200 DIM), or late lactation (201+ DIM). Mid- and late-lactation lame cows were also stratified by cumulative milk yield before the lameness event. Healthy cows (i.e., no recorded lameness event) were randomly assigned for each lactation stage, with mid-lactation healthy and late-lactation healthy cows similarly stratified. Production performance (cumulative milk, fat, and protein yield) and economic performance [milk value, margin over feed cost (MOFC), and gross profit] were analyzed using a mixed model with herd as a random effect. Cumulative milk yields were 811 to 1,290 kg lower for lame cows than for healthy cows, with milk component yields undergoing similar reductions. Reductions in milk yield contributed to losses in milk value (?Can$527 to ?Can$1,083; ?US$419 to ?US$862) and MOFC (?Can$510 to ?Can$774; ?US$406 to ?US$616). Higher losses were reported using gross profit (?Can$753 to ?Can$1,052; ?US$599 to ?US$837), which includes all lameness-related costs. Production and performance losses were smaller when 100 DIM and 305 DIM thresholds were applied (i.e., exclusion of cows culled before 100 and 305 DIM, respectively), however, mid- and late-lactation lame cows maintained high levels of significant losses for all 6 variables analyzed. Lameness also led to higher levels of culling, masking losses for transition and early-lactation lame cows in the 305-DIM analysis. Increasing producer understanding of the costs associated with lameness not only serves to provide insight to producers for more informed culling decisions, but may also help producers weigh the costs of adopting new methods and technologies targeted at reducing on-farm lameness.  相似文献

Jersey (JE) × Holstein (HO) crossbred cows (n = 76) were compared with pure HO cows (n = 73) for 305-d milk, fat, and protein production, somatic cell score (SCS), clinical mastitis, lifetime production, and body measurements during their first 3 lactations. Cows were in 2 research herds at the University of Minnesota and calved from September 2003 to June 2008. Best prediction was used to determine actual production for 305-d lactations as well as lifetime production (to 1,220 d in the herd after first calving) from test-day observations. During first lactation, JE × HO cows and pure HO cows were not significantly different for fat plus protein production; however, JE × HO cows had significantly lower fat plus protein production during second (−25 kg) and third (−51 kg) lactation than pure HO cows. Nevertheless, JE × HO cows were not significantly different from pure HO cows for lifetime production or lifetime SCS. The JE × HO cows were not significantly different from pure HO cows for SCS and clinical mastitis during first and second lactations; however, JE × HO cows tended to have higher SCS (3.79) than pure HO cows (3.40), but significantly lower (−23.4%) clinical mastitis during third lactation. The JE × HO cows had significantly less hip height, smaller heart girth, less thurl width, and less pin width than pure HO cows during the first 3 lactations. Furthermore, JE × HO cows had significantly less udder clearance from the ground and significantly greater distance between the front teats than pure HO cows during their first 3 lactations.  相似文献

Prediction equations were determined to estimate daily milk yield from 306 to 395 d in milk for forecasting herd milk sales from Holstein cows in lactation >305 d. Data were test day milk weights for 65,322 primiparous and 119,220 pluriparous lactations of > 305 d from the Southern US. A forecast model was developed using same lactation 305 d milk yield (in classes of 500 kg increments) that gave similar predicted daily yields as models utilizing last sample milk weight information. This model has the advantage of early forecasting of later milk using projected 305-d yields.Reduced forecast models ignoring days pregnant, yield class, or both accounted for 95, 68, and 59%, and 91, 67, and 56% as much variation in daily milk as the full model for the primiparous and pluriparous cows. Percentage of 305-d milk yielded in mo 11, 12, and 13, depending on 305-d yield class, ranged from 7.1 to 7.0%, 6.2 to 6.0%, and 5.4 to 5.0%, and 5.4 to 5.0%, 4.3 to 3.9%, and 3.3 to 3.0% for first parity and pluriparous cows calving in winter and 125 d open. Cows not calving in winter or with more than 125 d open yielded more milk in extended lactation. These percentages are larger than generally assumed in studies of days open, thus indicating that cost of days open may have been overestimated.  相似文献

Multiple lines of inquiry have suggested that a high degree of inflammation in early lactation cows is associated with low productivity and increased disease incidence. In addition, some small studies have suggested that milk production increases in response to antiinflammatory treatment in the first week of lactation. Our objective was to determine if administration of sodium salicylate (SS), a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID), in the first week of lactation changes whole-lactation productivity and retention in the herd. At calving, 78 cows [n = 39 primiparous (1P); n = 24 second parity (2P); n = 15 third parity or greater (3P)] were alternately assigned to either control (CON) or SS treatments for 7 d postpartum. Sodium salicylate treatment was administered via individual water bowls at a concentration of 1.95 g/L, delivering a mean of 123.3 ± 5.5 g of salicylate/d during the 7-d treatment. For the first 21 d of lactation, dry matter intake, water intake, milk yield, and health were monitored daily, and milk samples were collected twice weekly for milk component analysis. Monthly milk yield and component testing through the rest of the lactation provided data to assess long-term responses, and the effects of treatment on the risk of leaving the herd and on 305-d milk, fat, and protein yields were assessed. During the first 21 d of lactation, we observed no differences in morbidity, except for increased risk of metritis in 3P SS cows. Treatment interacted with parity to influence both 305-d milk and milk fat yields, and a tendency for an interaction was detected for 305-d milk protein yield. Milk yield was 2,469 ± 646 kg greater over the lactation in 3P SS cows compared with 3P CON cows (21% increase) and tended to decrease by 8% in 1P cows treated with SS; no effects were detected in 2P cows. Furthermore, 3P SS cows produced 130 ± 23 kg more milk fat over the lactation (30% increase), with no effects detected for 1P or 2P. Treatment with SS tended to increase 305-d milk protein yield in 3P cows by 14%, with no effects in 1P or 2P cows. A tendency for a treatment × parity interaction was also observed for the risk of leaving the herd. First-parity cows treated with SS tended to have greater risk of leaving the herd than controls (30 vs. 6% risk); however, treatment did not alter herd retention in 2P or 3P groups, and SS had no effect on the risk of leaving the herd overall. Results indicate that SS has long-term effects on lactation of mature dairy cows, particularly on fat yield, but may have negative effects for primiparous cows.  相似文献

Environmental influences during different stages of pregnancy can induce lifelong changes in the structure, physiology, and metabolism of the offspring. Our hypothesis was that season of conception (when the offspring was conceived), associated with heat stress conditions at conception and during the initial stages of embryonic development, affects the lifetime performance and survival of the female offspring after birth. The objective was to analyze the association between month of conception and subsequent survival, fertility, and milk yield in cows maintained on dairy farms in Florida, where the climate during the summer is hot and humid but winters are mild. Initial data consisted of 667,104 Dairy Herd Improvement lactation records from cows calving between 2000 and 2012 in 152 herds. Dates of conception were estimated as birth date minus 280 d. The magnitude of heat stress in each herd was quantified by comparing milk yield during summer and winter. Wood's lactation curves were fitted to adjust milk yields for effects of days in milk, and residuals were obtained for each calendar month. A sine function was fitted on the 12 residuals per farm. The difference between the highest and lowest points on the sine function was termed the seasonality index, a measure of the direct effect of heat stress on milk production. Herds were categorized in 3 levels of seasonality [low (seasonality index values less than the 25th percentile value; <2.84), medium (values within the interquartile range), and high (values greater than the 75th percentile value; >5.22)]. Cows were grouped by their month of conception: summer (July–September) and winter (December–February), and comparisons were performed by parity using logistic regression, ANOVA, and survival analysis. Two models were developed. Model A included the complete population of cows (n = 337,529 lactation records) conceived in winter or summer. Model B included cows (n = 228,257 lactation records) that had parent-average genetic information available to be able to correct for farmer's use of lower genetic merit of sires in summer. Other variables included in the models were month and year of calving, age at first calving, and herd. Models were run per parity group (1, 2, and ≥3). In both models, age at first calving was lower for cows conceived during winter versus summer. The odds (95% confidence interval) of survival to a second calving for cows conceived in winter were 1.21 and 1.15 times the odds of survival for cows conceived in summer for models A and B, respectively. Numbers of days from calving to first breeding and from calving to conception were consistently smaller for winter versus summer months of conception across all parity categories. Milk yields (305 d and by 70 d in milk) were greater for cows conceived in winter versus summer. In conclusion, cows that were conceived in the winter had better subsequent survival and performance than cows that were conceived in the summer. There is evidence that season of conception may have lifelong consequences for the offspring.  相似文献

Periparturient hypocalcemia is frequently observed and considered as a gateway disease that is associated with various health issues. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of hypocalcemia with early-lactation milk yield, reproductive performance, and culling across a large number of different managerial systems. A prospective cohort study was conducted based on a convenience sample of 125 dairy herds from 8 federal states of Germany between February 2015 and August 2016. A blood sample was drawn from 1,709 animals within 48 h after parturition and analyzed for serum calcium concentration. After discarding cows (n = 283) with missing data, a total of 1,426 cows were considered for final analyses. The median time from calving to sampling was 14.0 h (interquartile range = 5.0–24.9 h). For each herd, a record of the herd management software was requested 150 d after the last cow was sampled. Serum calcium concentration of each cow was associated with early-lactation milk yield (Dairy Herd Improvement Association equivalent test 1 to 3), reproductive performance [days in milk (DIM) at first artificial insemination (AI), pregnancy at first AI, time to pregnancy within 150 DIM], and culling (until 60 DIM) data. Generalized linear mixed models were used to analyze continuous or categorical data. Shared frailty models were used for time to event data. Five different thresholds were used to define hypocalcemia. Thresholds ranged from 1.8 to 2.2 mmol/L using 0.1-mmol/L increments. Clinical hypocalcemia was defined as serum calcium concentration <2.0 mmol/L in combination with clinical signs (e.g., recumbency). The effect of hypocalcemia on milk yield was conditional on parity. In primiparous cows a serum calcium concentration <2.0 mmol/L (6.4% of cows were below this threshold) had no effect on milk production, whereas there was a tendency for multiparous cows with a serum calcium concentration <2.1 mmol/L (63.2% of cows were below this threshold) to produce 0.80 kg/d more milk compared with multiparous cows at or above the threshold. Multiparous cows suffering from clinical hypocalcemia produced 2.19 kg/d less milk compared with normocalcemic cows in early lactation. Calcium status was not associated with days to first insemination. Cows with a serum calcium concentration <1.9 mmol/L (34.6% of cows below this threshold) had decreased odds (odds ratio = 0.56) of pregnancy at first AI. A serum calcium concentration <1.8 mmol/L (24.1% of cows below this threshold) had a significant effect on time to pregnancy. Compared with animals with a serum calcium concentration ≥1.8 mmol/L, the hazard of becoming pregnant within 150 DIM was reduced when cows had a serum calcium concentration <1.8 mmol/L (hazard ratio = 0.68). Cows with a serum calcium concentration <2.0 mmol/L (44.3% of cows were below this threshold) had a 1.69 times greater hazard of being culled within the first 60 DIM compared with normocalcemic animals. The present study shows that the association of hypocalcemia with milk yield was conditional on parity and serum calcium concentration measured once within 48 h after calving. We fit the Wood's lactation model to an extensive database of test-day milk production records of US Holstein cows to obtain lactation-specific parameter estimates and investigated the effects of temporal, spatial, and management factors on lactation curve parameters and 305-d milk yield. Our approach included 2 steps as follows: (1) individual animal-parity parameter estimation with nonlinear least-squares optimization of the Wood's lactation curve parameters, and (2) mixed-effects model analysis of 8,595,413 sets of parameter estimates from individual lactation curves. Further, we conducted an analysis that included all parities and a separate analysis for first lactation heifers. Results showed that parity had the most significant effect on the scale (parameter a), the rate of decay (parameter c), and the 305-d milk yield. The month of calving had the largest effect on the rate of increase (parameter b) for models fit with data from all lactations. The calving month had the most significant effect on all lactation curve parameters for first lactation models. However, age at first calving, year, and milking frequency accounted for a higher proportion of the variance than month for first lactation 305-d milk yield. All parameter estimates and 305-d milk yield increased as parity increased; parameter a and 305-d milk yield rose, and parameters b and c decreased as year and milking frequency increased. Calving month estimates parameters a, b, c, and 305-d milk yield were the lowest values for September, May, June, and July, respectively. The results also indicated the random effects of herd and cow improved model fit. Lactation curve parameter estimates from the mixed-model analysis of individual lactation curve fits describe well US Holstein lactation curves according to temporal, spatial, and management factors.  相似文献

Multiple-trait random regression animal models with simultaneous and recursive links between phenotypes for milk yield and somatic cell score (SCS) on the same test day were fitted to Canadian Holstein data. All models included fixed herd test-day effects and fixed regressions within region-age at calving-season of calving classes, and animal additive genetic and permanent environmental regressions with random coefficients. Regressions were Legendre polynomials of order 4 on a scale from 5 to 305 d in milk (DIM). Bayesian methods via Gibbs sampling were used for the estimation of model parameters. Heterogeneity of structural coefficients was modeled across (the first 3 lactations) and within (4 DIM intervals) lactation. Model comparisons in terms of Bayes factors indicated the superiority of simultaneous models over the standard multiple-trait model and recursive parameterizations. A moderate heterogeneous (both across- and within-lactation) negative effect of SCS on milk yield (from −0.36 for 116 to 265 DIM in lactation 1 to −0.81 for 5 to 45 DIM in lactation 3) and a smaller positive reciprocal effect of SCS on milk yield (from 0.007 for 5 to 45 DIM in lactation 2 to 0.023 for 46 to 115 DIM in lactation 3) were estimated in the most plausible specification. No noticeable differences among models were detected for genetic and environmental variances and genetic parameters for the first 2 regression coefficients. The curves of genetic and permanent environmental variances, heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between milk yield and SCS on a daily basis were different for different models. Rankings of bulls and cows for 305-d milk yield, average daily SCS, and milk lactation persistency remained the same among models. No apparent benefits are expected from fitting causal phenotypic relationships between milk yield and SCS on the same test day in the random regression test-day model for genetic evaluation purposes.  相似文献

Cases of mastitis from 9,550 lactations of 6,242 cows were recorded on 5 farms in the Czech Republic from 1996 to 2008. The number of clinical mastitis (CM) cases per cow adjusted to a lactation length of 305 d was analyzed with 4 linear single-trait animal models and one 3-trait model, which also included lactation mean somatic cell score (SCS) and 305-d milk yield. Factors included in the model of choice were parity, combined effect of herd and a 2-yr calving period, calving season, permanent environmental effect of the cow, and additive genetic effect of the cow. From both the single-trait and multiple-trait models, estimated heritability of number of CM cases was 0.11 (±0.015 for the multiple-trait model). Permanent environmental effects accounted for approximately one-third of the phenotypic variance. Heritability estimates for lactation mean SCS and 305-d milk yield were 0.17 ± 0.019 and 0.25 ± 0.011, respectively, and genetic correlations of these traits with number of CM cases were 0.80 ± 0.059 and 0.34 ± 0.079, respectively. Genetic evaluation of the number of CM cases in Czech Holsteins could be carried out including data from all parities using a 3-trait animal model with SCS and milk yield as additional traits.  相似文献

Our objectives were to evaluate the effect of left displacement of abomasum (LDA) after correction by toggle-pin suture (TPS) on lactation performance, reproduction and health in Holstein dairy cows in a commercial dairy farm. Cows diagnosed with LDA and corrected by the TPS procedure (188 cows) during the first 70 d postpartum were matched with control herd-mates (186 controls) according to lactation number, calving date, and previous lactation 305-d mature equivalent milk yield. Cows were grouped according to parity and days in milk and fed the same total mixed ration throughout a 321-d lactation. Data collected included yields of milk and 3.5% fat-corrected milk (FCM), concentration and yields of milk fat, somatic cell count, incidence of mastitis, abortion, death and culling, in addition to reproductive measures. Cows affected with LDA corrected by the TPS procedure produced less milk and tended to produce less 3.5% FCM than control cows, but the decrease in production occurred only during the first 4 mo of lactation. Left displacement of abomasum did not affect the interval from calving to conception and conception rates, but it extended the period from calving to first postpartum artificial insemination. Incidences of abortions and mastitis were not influenced by LDA. Cows affected with LDA remained in the study for a shorter period than their control herdmates, and higher proportions of cows with LDA were sold or died. Death and culling were more pronounced immediately after the diagnosis of LDA and the TPS procedure.  相似文献

Our objective was to assess the effects of feeding negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) prepartum diets on milk production, reproductive performance, and culling. Cows from 4 commercial farms in Ontario, Canada were enrolled in a pen-level controlled trial from November 2017 to April 2019. Close-up pens (1 per farm) with cows 3 wk before calving were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD (TRT; ?108 mEq/kg of dry matter; target urine pH 6.0–6.5) or a control diet (CON; +105 mEq/kg of dry matter with a placebo supplement). Each pen was fed TRT or CON for 3 mo (1 period), and then switched to the other treatment for the next period (4 periods per farm). Data from 15 experimental units (8 pen treatments in TRT and 7 in CON), with a total of 1,086 observational units (cows), were included. The effect of treatment on milk yield at the first 3 milk recording tests of lactation was assessed with linear regression models accounting for repeated measures. The risk of pregnancy at first artificial insemination and culling by 30, 60, and 305 d in milk (DIM) were analyzed with logistic regression models, and effects on time to first AI, pregnancy, and culling were assessed with Cox proportional hazards models. All models included treatment, parity, and their interactions, accounting for pen-level randomization and clustering of animals within farm with random effects, giving 10 degrees of freedom for treatment effects. Multiparous cows fed TRT produced more milk at the first (42.0 vs. 38.8 ± 1.2 kg/d) and second (44.2 vs. 41.7 ± 1.3 kg/d) milk tests. However, multiparous cows fed TRT tended to have 0.2 percentage units less milk fat content at these tests. Although multiparous cows fed TRT tended to have greater energy-corrected milk at the first test (least squares means ± standard error: TRT = 46.1 ± 0.9 vs. CON = 43.8 ± 1 kg/d), there were no differences observed in energy-corrected milk at the second or third tests. In primiparous cows, there was no effect of treatment on milk production. Multiparous cows fed TRT had greater pregnancy to first insemination (TRT = 42 ± 3 vs. CON = 32 ± 4%) and tended to have shorter time to pregnancy [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.20; 95% CI: 0.96–1.49]. In primiparous cows fed TRT, time to pregnancy was increased (HR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.59–0.99). Culling by 30 DIM tended to be less in TRT (3.3 ± 1.1%) than CON (5.5 ± 1.8%). No effect of treatment on culling by 305 DIM was detected in primiparous cows, but in multiparous cows, the TRT diets decreased the odds of culling (21.3 ± 1.9 vs. 31.7 ± 2.8%) and daily risk of culling to 305 DIM (HR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.89). Under commercial herd conditions, prepartum negative DCAD diets improved milk production and reproductive performance, and reduced culling risk in multiparous cows. In primiparous cows, TRT diets had no effect on milk yield or culling, but increased the time to pregnancy. Our results suggest that negative DCAD diets should be targeted to multiparous cows.  相似文献

The objectives were to describe culling patterns and reasons for culling across lactation, estimate mortality and the proportion of cows leaving from 21 d before an expected calving date through 60 d in milk (DIM; CULL60) for Pennsylvania (PA) dairy herds, and to describe production measures for herds with high and low mortality and CULL60. Weekly culling frequencies and reasons for culling from 3 wk before a reported expected calving date through ≥100 wk of lactation were calculated for all PA cows with at least 1 Dairy Herd Improvement test in 2005. It was estimated that at least 5.0% of PA dairy cows died in 2005, and that at least 7.6% were culled by 60 DIM. The majority of cows exiting the herd by 60 DIM either died (35.1%) or had a disposal code of injury/other (29.9%). A total of 137,951 test-day records from 20,864 cows in herds with high mortality (>8.0%) and CULL60 (>12.0%) and 136,906 test-day records from 12,993 cows in herds with low mortality (<1.4%) and CULL60 (<2.9%) were retained to describe differences among herds with high and low survival. Least squares means for weekly milk yield, fat and protein percentages, and somatic cell score (SCS) were estimated with a model that included fixed effects for herd environment (high or low survival) and week nested within herd environment and lactation; random effects were cow, herd-test-day, and error. Cows from herds with high mortality and CULL60 produced more milk in lactations 1 (+1.9 ± 0.15 kg/d) and 2 (+0.9 ± 0.16 kg/d), but less in lactations 4 (−0.7 ± 0.22 kg/d), 5 (−1.4 ± 0.29 kg/d), and ≥6 (−0.7 ± 0.32 kg/d) and had higher SCS (+0.24 ± 0.02), more change in early-lactation fat percentage (−1.77% vs. −1.59%), and a greater frequency of fat-protein inversions (3.6 ± 0.3%). There is an opportunity to manipulate management practices to reduce mortality and early-lactation culling rates, which will improve cow welfare and the efficiency of dairy production by capturing a greater proportion of potential lactation milk yield, increasing cow salvage values, and reducing replacement costs.  相似文献

The study was conducted to evaluate how the “Cow Value” module of Dairy Comp 305 (Valley Agricultural Software, Tulare, CA) performed under commercial conditions. The “Cow Value” module, COWVAL, computes a farm-specific net present value relative to an average replacement heifer for each cow in the milking and dry herd, which allows a ranking of the cows on the farm compared with replacing her with a typical replacement heifer on that farm. The average replacement heifer is used as the baseline for comparison and has a COWVAL of $0. Retaining a cow with a negative COWVAL is projected to be less profitable than replacing that cow with a new heifer. The objectives of the study were to explore trends in COWVAL over and during multiple lactations for the same cows; to describe factors that influence changes in COWVAL from one monthly Dairy Herd Improvement test to the next; and to evaluate the behavior of COWVAL after it drops below a baseline of $0 during the lifetime of a cow. Monthly Dairy Comp 305 backup cow files from 2 On-tario dairy herds between December 1999 and Decem-ber 2005 were used to generate COWVAL and list production, reproduction, and disease data for the milking cows. In total, 1,463 cows and 20,071 tests were analyzed. Within the first 60 d in milk (DIM), COWVAL was unstable and showed large fluctuations over a range of several thousand Canadian dollars (Can$). After 60 DIM COWVAL was relatively stable. The variability from month to month became less as the lactation progressed and the risk of a change in reproductive status decreased. The reproductive status of the cow influ-enced COWVAL: fresh, open, and pregnant cows had a greater COWVAL than cows declared “do not breed.” As parity increased, there was a tendency toward lower COWVAL and smaller monthly changes in COWVAL. The COWVAL of 170 cows dropped below the baseline of $0 after 60 DIM. The COWVAL of 54% of those cows remained below $0, whereas 31.6% had a subsequent COWVAL >$500 (Can$). Farm management should not rely exclusively on COWVAL for culling decisions, particularly for cows that have not had at least 3 milk tests.  相似文献
