Development of quality matrix to measure the effectiveness of quality management systems in Turkish construction industry

Quality Management Systems (QMS) are being operated in some sectors in Turkey but it is rare to meet these systems in construction industry. There are many hinderances that make it difficult to apply these systems effectively due to the nature of construction and therefore, no objective way of measuring the effectiveness of these systems exists in construction industry.     

Introducing management information systems in medium-sized construction companies

A diagnostic approach for the introduction of management information systems in medium-sized construction firms is proposed, through a selection of measures that take account of the characteristics of the change, the organization, its staff, resources and environment. Factors that should be considered in setting the pace of introduction are also presented. A case study demonstrates the employment of the proposed method.     

Integration, segmentalism and the maintenance of quality management systems in the construction industry

The authors concentrate on the application of the non-technical approach to help to promote an integrative environment for the development of change and innovation, with the primary objective of quality improvement. The case studies suggest that Company A is more segmentalist in nature than Company B which adopts an integrative approach. The authors indicate that EDMS will not replace, but complement existing facilities and thereby enhance the management of documentation within construction organizations. It is hoped that client confidence and satisfaction can be enhanced by better communication.

Geographic Information System-based tools in environmental management

The authors reviewed existing modelling platforms as part of a large study of water and pollution pathways through catchments in Ireland (Irish EPA Pathways project). Worldwide, work on producing catchment management tools (CMTs) has been underway for some time and some of the tools identified here date from as early as 1989. Some of the management problems and model conceptualisations have not changed very much but now there is a stronger emphasis on water quality and more concern about a wider range of contaminants. What has changed substantially is the use of Geographical Information System and Graphical Windows interfaces as technologies supporting a wider practical use of these tools. This review of existing CMTs identified three systems which would be candidates if a CMT had to be deployed immediately in Ireland. All have a rigid catchment model structure and lack the flexibility to include any new scientific information or flow-path conceptualisation that may emerge. The same modelling structure is used for all parts of the catchment, with spatial variation represented by parameter variation only and not variation in model structure. They also have rigid graphical user interfaces which cannot be tailored to match any specific requirements that may emerge from the pathways end-user workshops. Thus a CMT with a more flexible and accessible modelling structure is required if the results of current research are to be incorporated.

Unitary management and environmental performance by monitoring and protection of mineral resources for construction materials from Romania

Today, protection of natural mineral resources depends on their reasonable use and management. Environment management is essential in understanding the complex actions between the present earth surface and the control of production in the extractive field. All branches of extractive activities and competitiveness on the global market are closely connected with the application of coherent and unitary programs for the protection of natural resources and the environment by economic agents. As in other European countries, Romania has adopted standards, laws, norms or settlements concerning not only the quality of products but also an integrated system of quality and environment management.     

Predictive control techniques for energy and indoor environmental quality management in buildings

The aim of the present paper is to present a model-based predictive controller, combined with a Building Energy Management System (BEMS). The overall system predicts the indoor environmental conditions of a specific building and selects the most appropriate actions so as to reach the set points and contribute to the indoor environmental quality by minimizing energy costs. The controller is tested using a BEMS installation in Hania, Crete, Greece.
