The World Wide Web (WWW) has become, next to electronic mail, the most popular Internet application. It has been a major contributor in turning the Internet into a household word. The WWW allows users to retrieve text and multimedia objects from servers located throughout the world, with objects connected by hypermedia links. The author presents a snapshot of the WWW after about half a decade, and speculates about where this young medium might be improved and which directions it might take from a technical perspective. Like most (successful) Internet technologies, the underlying central functionality of the Web is rather simple: a naming mechanism for files (the universal resource locator, URL), a typed, stateless retrieval protocol (hypertext transfer protocol, HTTP), and a minimal formatting language with hyperlinks (hypertext markup language, HTML)  相似文献

This study surveyed politically interested Internet users online during the 2000 presidential election to examine their motives for using Web, bulletin boards/electronic mailing lists and chat forums for political information and to determine whether political attitudes, Internet experience and personal characteristics predict Internet use motivations. The findings indicate that each Internet component satisfies slightly different needs, which can be predicted by some political attitudes and demographics, and Internet experience. Additionally, results from this study are compared to findings from an earlier study of politically interested Web users during the 1996 presidential election.  相似文献

The last couple of years have seen a growing momentum toward using the Internet for conducting business. Web-based electronic commerce applications are one of the fastest growing segments of the Internet today. A key enabler for e-commerce applications is the ability to setup secure private channels over a public network. The Secure Sockets Layer protocol provides this capability and is the most widely used security protocol in the Internet. We take a close look at the working principles behind SSL with an eye on performance. We benchmark two of the popular Web servers in wide use in a number of large e-commerce sites. Our results show that the overheads due to SSL can make Web servers slower by a couple of orders of magnitude. We investigate the reason for this deficiency by instrumenting the SSL protocol stack with a detailed profiling of the protocol processing components. In light of our observations, we outline architectural guidelines for large e-commerce sites  相似文献

This paper looks at some of the advances in open standards for interfacing and interoperability and how they can be utilised to improve the customer experience when contacting suppliers, in particular, the use of XML/HTTP Web Services to improve the quality of the interaction. It describes in depth a solution developed by the authors to use Web Services to interface both within the enterprise and across the Internet with partners to enhance the BT ADSL pre-registration scheme. BT uses many operational support systems (OSS) in the course of its business. The major customer service system (MCSS) is one such OSS used for electronic dialogue with major customers. The client/server approach currently used is being superseded with a call for a World Wide Web (WWW) interface and adoption of a mid-tier server/thin-client approach. This paper examines how practical verification, validation and test (VV&T) techniques can be applied to such systems. Three WWW technologies are examined here as researched and implemented within the MCSS Bali project. The three technologies are Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Java and Citrix WinFrame.  相似文献

3D modeling and visualization of the cochlea using the World Wide Web (WWW) is an effective way of sharing anatomic information for cochlear implantation over the Internet, particularly for morphometry-based research and resident training in otolaryngology and neuroradiology. In this paper, 3D modeling, visualization and animation techniques are integrated in an interactive and platform-independent manner and implemented over the WWW. L.T. Cohen et al.'s (1996) template shape with mean cross-sectional areas of the human cochlea is extended into a 3D geometrical model. Also, spiral computer tomography data of a patient's cochlea is digitally segmented and geometrically represented. The cochlear electrode array is synthesized according to its specification. Then, cochlear implantation is animated with both idealized and real cochlear models. The insertion length, angular position and characteristic frequency of individual electrodes are estimated online during the virtual insertion. The optimization of the processing parameters is done to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology for clinical applications  相似文献

Electronic transaction through e-payment protocol will grow tremendous in the coming years. In this article, by conversely using blind signature, the authors propose a fair electronic payment scheme for electronic commerce, which can ensure two participants' right simultaneously in electronic transaction process. This scheme is different from other existing schemes and it does not require strong trust relation between customer and merchant. In the scheme, a semi-trusted third party (S-TTP) is involved to provide a fair commerce environment. The S-TTP takes part in the protocol on-line and no secure information about the business is leaked. Moreover, the participants do not need to register to S-TTP. This scheme does not require intervention of a third party in case of dispute, if one user cheats or simply crashes.  相似文献

The increasing demand for World Wide Web (WWW) services has made document caching a necessity to decrease download times and reduce Internet traffic. To make effective use of caching, an informative decision has to be made as to which documents are to be evicted from the cache in case of cache saturation. This is particularly important in a wireless network, where the size of the client cache at the mobile terminal (MT) is small. Several types of caching are used over the Internet, including client caching, server caching, and more recently, proxy caching. In this article we review some of the well known proxy-caching policies for the Web. We describe these policies, show how they operate, and discuss the main traffic properties they incorporate in their design. We argue that a good caching policy adapts itself to changes in Web workload characteristics. We make a qualitative comparison between these policies after classifying them according to the traffic properties they consider in their designs. Furthermore, we compare a selected subset of these policies using trace-driven simulations.  相似文献
